in addition to SF;

there were also very big Chinese communities in New York and Philidelphia in the old times.

understanding of tong or tang or dang.

it is not unusual that chinese people would form clubs or societies of all kinds

the bigger one is called tong or a faction.

the mid size would be called bang.

the small size would be called ban.

--

1. from the same last name

2. from the same home town or province

3. from the same business, or profession, selling goods, vegetables, fishes or rices or salts etc.

4. from the same religious belief

5. from the same political belief

--

one person may belong to several societies or groups.

just wanted to point out that not all tongs are related to criminal activities or bad stuff only.

some examples;

1. in Ming dynasty, one of the emporers was weak or not interested in ruling the country but spending time on pleasure.

the scholars from some schools criticized some politics in the palace, they were called dong ling dang/tong or the faction of the east woods.

2. the pickpocket or robbers would frequent the bank, railway station to steal money from unsuspected people, it is called jin kuang dang/tong or gold and shines gang. they may be from the same group of people or not is another issue. they are just called the group of people that do the stealing or robbing in general.

so tong sometimes just means a group of people, but they may not necesarrily associate with one another in an organized way.

:D;)

Check out this book.

Blood Brothers: The Criminal Underworld of Asia

Goes over A LOT regarding Chinese, Japanese, and Russian organized crime. Lots of focus spent on immigration and business.

Lots of big names, and events involved, a really fun and facinating read.

edit: http://www.amazon.com/Blood-Brothers-Criminal-Underworld-Asia/dp/1403961549

I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in Asian organized crime. A plethora of knowledge concerning, people, places, terminology, and dates.

blood brothers or blood sisters.

if you want to band with several friends as brothers

you have to drip some of your blood in bowls of wine or water

and swear or take a oath to the sky/heaven or in front of gods in a temple.

then everyone drinks blood tinted water or wine.

even thou not born from the same parents, but now with the oath and drinking.

everyone is bound in blood.

--

some famous examples;

1. guan gong, liu bei and zhang fei. they sworn in as blood brothers in a peach garden in periods of three kingdoms.

so no matter what general/minister cao cao offered to guan gong. guan never gave in due to the "blood" brother hood and loyalty to liu bei

another ironic example

it is between liang shan bo and zhu ying tai.

they sworn in as brothers and went to school together.

they did it in front of earth god or tu di gong.

however, ying tai was a girl disguised as a boy.

eventually "brotherhood" became love affairs between a man and a woman.

the "butterfly lovers".

my point is that

blood brother or sister hood existed in bussiness, military, or any segments of the society.

NOT NECESSARILY organized crimes only.

excellent point.

Many times, in america as well as china, "brotherhoods" were in place to be able to have a fucntioning society.

For instance, early years of chinese living in new york was difficult for many citizens, due to the fact that american police would basically leave china town alone. citizens had to fend for themselves. organizations would then be put in place and operated by the locals, these tongs would often help to govern the community.

The Hip Sing Tong was one of the largest gangs in China back then. Today they are called The Hip Sing Chinese Business Mens Association.
