View Full Version : Internal arts for combat?

I was just wondering if internal arts are truly usefull for combat. I have personally expirienced their health benifits, but I'm not sure if they could be used in a real fight. I mean a real fight, not sparing or apllications where the guy goes along with it. I'm not sure if I should make the transition to internal from external.

Sorry about spelling, I'm in a rush right now.:p

All depends on if your teacher knows how to teach you to fight with the system.

Way too many people out there who have no clue.

Definitely YES. Especially the fact that you already have martial arts background, it should be easy for you to distinguish whether the art is health or combat orientated. If the teacher can't demonstrate his/her techniques and convince you, then it's probably not worth it. If what you cross hands with him/her and make your jaw drop, then go for it. Style is not the issue here, it's the teacher.

I would say baguazhang and xingyiquan can definitely be used for real self defense as I have personally used baguazhang for that reason before. The key is even if your teacher focuses mainly on forms and two person drills, as well as showing you the application uses, is to spend your time further researching real use in fighting of the techniques you're taught. You can go so far as using some medium-full paced sparring against opponents with or without sparring gear, and still be safe about it.

All martial systems are for combat, hence the term "MARTIAL" arts! Noo ne system is better than another, teachers are what make the difference.

To add. Its also good to have street fighting experience or at least get books written by those who had street combat experiences like from law enforcement officers, bouncers, prison security guards etc.

To add.
I think alot of martial art systems became less martial over the centuries. Mainly becuase they werent be continously used in hand to hand fighting as often. China had long periods of wars follow with long periods of peace. During those more peaceful times the only wars were mainly crushing smll bands of insurgents like the White Lotus Society, Yellow Turbins etc. but no major wars like The Warring Period in China.
If your in a life and eath situation all the time. I'm sure soldiers would quickly adopt to to anything to save themselves.

Unfortunately there is A lot of Tai Chi being taugt that is not martial. Although it may have health benefits, it is not for self defense.

I have been studying for 7 years and even though I still feel like a beginner, I find myself using what I learned when sparring with other styles of martial arts (wing chun, aikido etc) you don't think about it, it just kind of shows up.

I feel that of all the martial arts that I have learned, I would use what I have gained in the internal arts.
