China's been getting hit hard as of late, floods, earthquakes, higher rates for call girls and massage parlours !
Stop the insanity !

On a serious note, how quickly did emergency services get to work?

My friends from Chongqing and Zigong (near Chengdu) say everything is mostly ok there. The rains are making it difficult for rescue workers and relief to get through though. CNN reported that the roads are in really bad shape too (and they weren't great to begin with).

The last big quake was Tang Shan big quake.

There is a movie and monument for it. At the time, the news from mainland China was difficult to get.

--

It was very sad. I donated my money to Red Cross in Taipei, Taiwan. I was in high school. I grew up in Taiwan, I practically felt earthquake just about every year.

--

Hopefully, 30 years later, with technology and everything, rescue and relief efforts would be better and faster to reach those in need. even thou, this time is in a remote country side of China.

http://physorg.com/news130162918.html

1. dragon gate faults are due to the colliding pressure from 3 land plates.

the tibetan plate, kun lun plate and yang zi plate.

these faults were tought to be dormant, now active again and causing the recent quakes. these faults would create big quakes every few thousand years.

2. Himalaya mountains rose for a few meters after the recent quakes.

We've been working hard to put together Martial Arts Benefit for Quake Victims (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?p=862430), which I mentioned earlier on this thread. When it comes to charity events, it's always fascinating to me to see which martial artists walk the walk, so to speak. Here in America, we're getting a full page news piece in the front page every day, along with a report in the first five minutes on TV news broadcasts. There's been some good coverage on public radio and TV, but the web has proven itself again as a major news source for events as they happen.

I'm not big on Chinese mysticism, superstition and numerology, but I translate our horoscope (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/info/horoscope/index.php) and have a working understanding of its symbolic power to China. What's more, in our upcoming issue, there's an article that discusses the 8 symbolism behind the Olympics. Below is an except from an article from today's front page. For the complete article, follow this link (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/05/21/MN9U10NR0K.DTL&hw=china&sn=001&sc=1000).

Lucky 8

China's Olympics have been carefully planned to begin around the lucky number eight. Ba, or eight in Chinese, sounds similar to the word for wealth. The Games open on Aug. 8, 2008, at 8 p.m.

But exactly 88 days before the Games are expected to begin, the largest earthquake to hit China in three decades struck Sichuan province. By Tuesday, the death toll reached more than 40,000, and the government estimates the figure could climb to as many as 50,000 people.

At the highest levels, the government has sought to reassure survivors of the quake, and the rest of the country, that it will spare no effort in rescue and rebuilding. Both Premier Wen Jiabao and President Hu Jintao have visited the region.

Yang of Singapore's East Asian Institute says the quake could lead to positive changes, like stricter building codes for schools and better safety measures. While the Communist Party of China has extolled its own virtues throughout the week, he said, "I think they are learning some lessons."

It all adds up to ...

Yet skepticism in superstitious China remains, largely among many youths who don't remember the Cultural Revolution or the hardships of past years.

On the widely used QQ Web chat service, a popular post has been widely circulated in which the author describes how the month and day of each traumatic event equals eight. The Jan. 25 snowstorm, for example, is 1+2+5=8. The same for Tibet's uprising on March 14 (3+1+4=8) and the May 12 earthquake (5+1+2=8).

His conclusion when adding up the three events: 8-8-08 - the day of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.

1. there were over 7000 aftershocks since the big shake.

2. 5 million people homeless, they are in need of 3 million tents.

3. Bei chuan and other county townships are quarantined. there are 2 blockade lines established by the military and police. meaning nobody in or out.

4. sadly that, stray dogs are being "eliminated" for fear of eating dead people flesh and spreading disease such as rabies???

5. military chemical unit spraying disinfectant, medical teams are on site to "control" possible spreading of disease from human, live stock and wild lives.

6. the train tickets out of cheng du are 10 times or higher normal rates. yes everything "costs" more in cheng du and other disaster areas. due to scarcity and scalping.

7. make shift "quarters" may be too "close" or crowded" for comfort. but it is always better than nothing against the cold and rains.

2. rescue teams stopped searching for survivors and are leaving the area. 20% remaining buildings in bei chuan will be blown up by demolition teams, so the 1400 years old town will disappear 100%. the government and people are relocated to nearby town.

3. the same demolition fates are due for du jian yan and qing shan cheng. both are like 4000 years old "establishments".

4. PRC government allocated 5% of his budget this year for relief effort. meaning, 5% cut across the board for all government expenditure.

5. 20 provencial grovernments are helping si chuan to recover and rebuild.

6. the scale and scope of military moblilization for the relief are biggest in modern history. It is almost like landing of normandie in WWII. and German invasion of urkrain in ww II.

7. Tibetan government in exile called for cessation of protests worldwide and starting to raise funds and support the relief in si chuan.

Chinese Officials Seek to Quell Superstitions About Earthquakes (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601089&sid=aMvbTYRHHU6c&refer=china)
By Dune Lawrence

May 20 (Bloomberg) -- Earthquake specialists in Sichuan today tried to quell rumors about earthquake omens contributing to public anxiety after the 7.9-magnitude tremor that hit China on May 12, killing more than 40,000 people.

The forecasting institute of Sichuan's Earthquake Bureau said today that reports of spring water becoming murky, paddy fields bubbling and crowds of toads crossing roads were after effects of the earthquake and continuing shocks, not omens of more, Xinhua News Agency reported today.

China's deadliest earthquake in 32 years is spurring the nation's citizens to find superstitious significance in animal behavior, the date of the Beijing's Olympic Games and even the Olympic mascots.

Residents of Tongzi County in Guizhou province reported large numbers of frogs and toads moving together, which they took as a sign of another tremor, state-run Xinhua said, citing the vice mayor of the local city.

Internet messages have circulated in recent days noting that the dates associated with deadly snowstorms starting in January, riots in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa in March and the earthquake in Sichuan all add up to 8. Beijing's Summer Olympic Games are set to begin on Aug. 8, 2008, or 8/8/08.

Online posts have also linked the five Olympic mascots, called ``fuwas,'' to the misfortunes China has experienced this year. The panda fuwa represents the Sichuan earthquake, the flame fuwa protests during the Olympic torch relay, the Tibetan antelope fuwa riots in Lhasa, and the swallow fuwa a train crash in Shandong province, a center of kite-flying in China, according to the messages.

The posts speculate that the last fuwa, a dolphin, may signify an even worse disaster to come.

China’s Disasters by the Number (http://www.asiasentinel.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1212&Itemid=34)

The Chinese government declared three days of official mourning beginning Monday for last week’s earthquake. In addition to a lax ban on “public entertainment,” and advertisements, it began with three minutes of national silence at 2.28pm - the time the quake began last week. Drivers were asked to honk their horns at the same time and disaster sirens were also scheduled to wail, which I feared would jar the solemn mood and wouldn't sound too much different from a routine Beijing traffic jam. Nine people in our department stood before two TV sets ticking down the time towards the moment and watching silent footage of the disaster.

Out a window I could see construction workers in blue jump suits and yellow hard hats standing across the street atop office buildings, most with hands folded and heads bowed. The horns began howling; the sirens keened above them and it was as if the entire country was suddenly weeping. Two female coworkers dabbed their eyes and I also began choking up.

Three minutes later it ended. True silence for a second except for sniffles and televisions, then the jackhammers, saws and drills at the construction sites began their barrage again.

"So sad, too sad," one person whispered, a little embarrassed at her tears.

"It's okay." I said. "Everyone is sad."

Like the US post-9/11 and my fellow office workers, many of China's Netizens have been trying to find meaning in what it is being called the worst year in the country's history - though none mention the famines in the late '50s or the Cultural Revolution years.

There were the crippling snowstorms of January, unrest in Tibet followed by what is widely perceived here as international insult and humiliation heaped on the "sacred flame" of the Olympic torch while it made its journey outside the Middle Kingdom. A horrific train crash came next and now the earthquake the Internet is abuzz with material that is familiar in its own way to Americans who have pondered the coincidences of the John Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln assassinations ("Lincoln had a secretary named Kennedy, Kennedy had a secretary named Lincoln; both had vice presidents from southern states named Johnson...").

It is also reminiscent of the weird idea that a Nostradamus couplet foretold the attack on the Twin Towers, or that the word "Satan" could be seen in the smoke that rose above the collapsed building on 9/11.

In China, it's about numbers: add up the dates of the snowstorm (1-25), the Tibet riots (3-14) and the earthquake (5-12) individually and you get "8" normally an unusually auspicious number and the reason the Olympics will kick off on 8-8-08 (and why it costs significantly more to get a phone number with multiple 8's).

The five tooth-achingly cute cartoon character Olympic mascots called "Fuwa" – I think of them as exotic, colorful Smurfs are also now seen by some to be harbingers of China's recent miseries. Representing a fish, panda, swallow, Tibetan antelope and the Olympic flame, those seeking coincidence see the panda as an earthquake warning, since the ravaged area is also home to China's endangered giant panda; the Tibetan antelope well, you can figure that out; ditto for the Olympic flame; the swallow is seen as emblematic for the "kite city" of Weifang in Shandong province where China experienced a deadly train crash last month.

The remaining one is a fish symbol, representing water, which online doomsayers suggest could indicate pending horror in the Yangtze River.

Some Taiwanese TV stations are also blaming the feng shui of Beijing's massive new "Bird Nest" Olympic stadium, saying it has "interrupted the pulse" of a giant dragon said to lie beneath the country.

Then there are sincere, if syrupy, efforts to offer some online comfort, like this anonymous poem, which is jerking tears throughout the country. There is now talk of turning it into an earthquake memorial song.

For the children of Wenchuan who have died in the earthquake

Hurry child, grab mommy's hands
Child, tightly grab mommy's hand
The way to heaven is too dark and mommy's afraid you'll hit your head
Hurry, tightly grab mommy's hands, let mom go with you
Mommy, I'm scared that the road to heaven is too dark
I can't see your hands since the fallen walls stole the sunshine away
I will never again see your loving gaze
Child, you can go to the road ahead
You will have no sadness, no endless homework, or your father's scolding
You must remember daddy's face and mine
In the next life we will walk together again

its the inevitability of Human Drama that we cannot escape.

I was protesting the US out of Iraq when it first started. When Katrina Hit there were many who said that Katrina was New Orleans "Kharma" for becoming what it had become. I merely bring up the interesting "coincidence" of that earthquake that hit two weeks after the protests in Tibet.

Sure we can just say that it was merely an earthquake and thats that, or it was merely a couple of really big hurricanes that hit the gulf coast. Or that we merely had two planes that were hijacked by terrorists and flown into the world trade centers. We can look at it in black and white or Grey. I tend to look at the "color" of the picture and yes black and white and grey are parts of the "big picture", but the "Color" is far more interesting and alluring.

And as for Buddhists being threatening, I focus on Tibet itself and who would be running that country had the Communists and Mao had not just decided to invade that country and "liberate it" just like WE did in Iraq. You read any of the Dali Llamas books? Hardly seems like a threatening dictator,if you ask me. Oh and Tibet is NOT Japan,Gene;)

Not only have I read some of the Dalai Lama's books, I can also spell his title correctly. I've also heard him speak and have the utmost respect for H.H. However, you do know that H.H. was a slave owner, yes? The Lama system was a slave-owning dictatorship. There were and are rebels in Tibet, and not just the chicoms.

But to get back on topic - let's see what happens this Friday. Will Bèibei, the sturgeon, arise?

you do know that H.H. was a slave owner, yes? The Lama system was a slave-owning dictatorship.
I love the past tense. It tells me that the future is becoming a more evolved one, hehe sort of. But replacing a ONCE slave owning dictatorship with a communist dictatorship is not a very good trade off, if you ask me.

So not allowing Tibet to be its own sovereign nation causes plate tectonics?

No Andy, Im saying that Kharma is a very mysterious and sometimes powerful thing, manifesting itself in all forms, yes even plate techtonics.

How midieval to think that human sin causes natural events

Well its modern times now and MANY people still think that way, christian, jew muslim alike, even buddhist Hindu, Taoist, Pagan etc etc.
Its all connected and all related.

Outrage in China after Stone says earthquake may be due to 'bad karma' (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/outrage-in-china-after-stone-says-earthquake-may-be-due-to-bad-karma-835869.html)
By Guy Adams in Los Angeles and Clifford Coonan in Beijing
Thursday, 29 May 2008

Sharon Stone is facing an escalating consumer boycott from cinema-goers in China, one of Hollywood's most important export markets, after saying the earthquake that has killed at least 70,000 people could be caused by "bad karma."

In an outburst that may prove more provocative than even the infamous leg-crossing scene in Basic Instinct, the 50-year-old actress told reporters that this month's natural disaster, which made millions homeless, may be the result of the Chinese government's policy on Tibet.

Amid growing fury over the comments, which were made on the red carpet at Cannes last week but have since reached a worldwide audience on YouTube, the founder of one of China's biggest cinema chains said yesterday that his company would no longer show her films in its theatres.

Ng See-Yuen, founder of the cinema chain UWE and chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers, described Stone's remarks as "inappropriate" and said actors should not bring personal politics to bear on a humanitarian crisis.

The Chinese PR company for Christian Dior, with whom Ms Stone has a lucrative modelling contract, has distanced itself from her comments, while yesterday's Beijing Times reported that department stores have removed advertising bearing her image.

At the heart of the row is an interview Stone gave to a TV reporter. "I am not happy about the way the Chinese are treating the Tibetans," she said, when asked about her Buddhist faith. "Then I have been concerned about 'how shall we deal with the Olympics?' because they are not being nice to the Dalai Lama, who is a good friend of mine. And then this earthquake and all this stuff happened and I thought, 'Is that karma, when you're not nice that the bad things happen to you?'"

Although representatives for Stone, 50, were not returning calls yesterday, supporters pointed out that later in the interview, the actress conceded that her hardline attitude had softened after she received a letter from The Tibetan Foundation asking her to go and help quake victims.

Stone's remarks have provoked widespread outrage on the internet, with Chinese citizens posting web responses to Stone. Although actors making colourful remarks on the red carpet is nothing new in Hollywood, industry experts say Stone's comments may prove to be particularly ill-judged, given that she currently has at least four films in production. "To speak plain English, you don't want to **** off several billion people," said Steven Gaydos, executive editor of the Hollywood newspaper Variety.

Back in China, meanwhile, the challenges keep on coming for the thousands of soldiers and other relief workers trying to help the five million people displaced by the 7.9-magnitude quake.

So acute is the problem that China has even asked the Japanese army for help, the first time Japanese soldiers have been deployed in China since the Second World War.

Yesterday, relief workers evacuated 150,000 people living near the perilous Tangjiashan "quake lake" because of fears the reservoir could burst its banks.

Don't get me wrong, TWS. Obviously China's relationship with Tibet is troubled. We actually had a little protest at our benefit (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?p=864056). And I'm happy to engage the Tibet debate elsewhere. I just find it really inappropriate on this quake thread. Firstly, the karma argument betrays a fundamental lack of understanding of Buddhism and karma. The Dalai Lama has not made such statements. He reacted appropriately with condolences and prayer. Karma may be seen as an instrument of justice, but it's on such a cosmic level that we seldom bear witness to the cause and effect. The 1st of Bodhidharma's 4 practices is to suffer injury and injustice. This is because a practitioner might be the recipient of some past karmic transgression from eons ago. It's a useful tool in coping with tragedy. Looking at karma from that lens, it serves as a reconciliatory device, not a vehicle of divine justice. But on a deeper level, for anyone to say that the tens of thousands of innocents in Sichaun are getting what they deserve because they live under a corrupt rule is ignorant and insensitive. Only a fashion Buddhist would make such an shallow claim. TWS, to ask me if I've read the works of the Dalai Lama while misspelling the title is profound evidence of a poorly executed post. Just stop and think about it. I suggest you reconsider your arguments before posting again here. There are plenty of other threads that are more appropriate for the Tibet debate. Debating it here dishonors the tens of thousands who are dead or suffering.

I've been in Henan for the last few weeks, the news that reaches me is PRC, but a couple points I can't help but think about:

1) Whether Chinese leaders moved in for cynical reasons or humanitarian, they moved in. All television was devoted 24-7 to this one thing, entertainment was shut down. While I originally intended to shop a lot here, I instead donated a good chunk of what I brought here, and still feel it is not enough whenever I run into another friend who is worried about family in Sichuan. I hope some notes are being taken back home for the next Katrina, actually doing something instead of bickering seems to have done wonders for political leaders here.

2) American business leaders, whether for cynical or humanitarian reasons, stepped up, the US government did not, and the resentment here is palpable. Really palpable. Even though Japan tends to donate lots to these kinds of things, there is a real cost for the US to allow Japan to out-donate us in China. The party doesn't even need to tell people here what to think about this, it really shouldn't be this easy to be less popular than the Japanese in China. Please pressure your congressmen to do more.

3) If this were karma for Tibet, then it seems odd that the event should strengthen the power of the party. But then, karma is supposed to be all mysterious. Whatever, for the little kids, it's just a disaster, they don't need outside explanations, its just what happened. Tibet and China have a relationship that is complex beyond simple ideas of heroes and villains, but anytime people suffer, it seems unfair, so it's hard to blame the pro-Tibet thing from TWS, I just don't think its that simple.

Anyway, enjoy life.

Some assorted martial arts relief efforts apart from our own (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?p=864092).

Jet Li Prepares for Long-Term Work in Quake-Hit Sichuan (http://english.cri.cn/3086/2008/05/22/1261@360718.htm)

Jet Li's disaster-relief One Foundation set up an office in quake-hit Sichuan Province Wednesday, shifting its focus from emergency relief to reconstruction.

"Our work here is going to be long-term," Jet Li explained at a press conference in the provincial capital of Chengdu, where the office is based. The action film star flew there from Shanghai shortly after the May 12 earthquake, and has been an active volunteer since.

Foreseeing that rebuilding the quake-hit areas will take several years, Jet Li thinks a local office is needed to help his staff work more effectively. The focus of the foundation, he says, will be rebuilding schools and providing special care for those left orphaned or disabled.

Because the foundation has a star-studded volunteer line-up, the office will also serve as a reception center for them when they are volunteering in Sichuan, Jet Li says.

Jet Li and his foundation have raised 56.5 million yuan (US$8.1 million) for quake victims by Wednesday noon.

Dancers perform a skit from the upcoming kung-fu musical "Poem of Kungfu (http://english.cri.cn/3086/2008/05/28/1261@362697.htm)" at a press conference in Beijing on Tuesday, May 27, 2008. The dance musical combines martial-arts stunts with traditional Chinese music as well as pop tunes. It will premiere at the Poly Theater on June 6. All proceeds from that show will be donated to rehabilitating people in quake zones.

Yes. before nationalities, and politics: theocrasy, democrasy, socialist market economy----

We are people or human being at first and foremost.

We do share the grieves from the families that effected by the big quake.

1. many kids were born or delivered when the quake hit, many names of zhen sheng or quake birth are used.

2. many parents lost kids at schools. with one child policy---

3. many kids were orphaned due to loss of parents. They are rapidly adopted by many Chinese families from other provinces.

Karma is cause and effect.

Natural disasters know no borders (nationalities). They know no politics either.

I had no idea that Sharon Stone and i shared an "opinion" on that subject.

I initially posted what i did because i am seeing a major contradiction in how things are run over there in China. On the one hand we see protesters in Tibet who want their country back who are demonstrating and speaking out against the hypocracy of a government that doesnt give a sh!t about them, and who wants to quell any notion of that country wanting to regain its soveriegnty, and then we see the overwhelming humanitarian efforts of the chinese government to help its people recover and rebuild from a disaster such as this earth quake. We see major censorship on the world media trying to understand what is going on in Tibet and then the doors swing wide open for the world media in Sichuan. Dont get me wrong i think it is terrible what has happened over there in Sichuan and i want nothing more than to see the people regain themselves and rebuild. But when i say that it was Kharma i dont mean it in the context of "ha ha ha look what happened to you". I am merely pointing out a rare coincidence of events that has lead up to this point. Would the earthquake still have happened if Tibet had its sovereignty and the Dalai Lama was running his country? Maybe so. Who knows. Cant really say what would have happened, cant reverse time to find out, we can only comment on what is happening now and what has lead up to now.
But i will concede here. I was innapropriate, apologies Gene.

Still having aftershocks. The government made a vague prediction which has filled the parks with makeshift refugee style tarp tents. A random building crumbled in Cheng Du, which is a little disheartening. There has been some criticism both of the Red Cross and Government for how much money is going in and how much is going to tents. Some of the tents meant for the heart of the disaster area are in Cheng Du. I understand that in Charity, there are costs of running the organization. I don't have an opinion on any of this, I'm just passing it along. The price the red cross is paying for rice, is double to three times the normal amount. Imagine loaves of bread for 7-10 bucks. Again, I'm not an expert in this, this is just what many student groups are upset over.

Jet Li was in the thick of the volunteers, even amid threats of flooding. He was wearing standard volunteer uniform and carrying timbers with others over his shoulder. Personally, we avoided the red cross, and went with Jet Li's One foundation. I would also go with KFM charity or someone you can personally trust and hold accountable with clear books.

As most business is down for a while, my Kung Fu students and I are enjoying 4+ hours in the park doing kung fu amid makeshift tents and curious onlookers. In the midst of all this chaos, morale in the kung fu class has never been higher. People are working hard and the atmosphere is really positive.

Of the makeshift houses I have seen some of the most clever setups as well as the most foolish. Among the foolish are sleeping under freeway underpasses for safety or outside against an 8 story building. Using tubes, ropes and clear plastic extended families gather with a simple roof playing cards, ma jhong, and having meals together. Even after a week people are still sleeping outside and in increasing numbers. All tents were sold out within an hour and you can't even buy one in China and have it sent. Even tarps and supplies for making tents are in short suppy. This has lead to some very creative solutions. The collective lack of sleep has lead to escalating tension.

After Kung fu we saw a guy who had his girfriend in an armlock and was bashing her head into the pavement. Ignoring the "Its not our business" Chinese mantra we came to her aid. My wife has good kung fu and jumped off the back of our moped and went after the guy. She was crouched and ready to spring when I held her back and approached him. I put my hand on the man's shoulder to prevent him from swinging at me and occupied the side and back position as I talked to him to calm him down. I told him that every couple fights, but not to use violence. I told him to relax. In these cases, beating him up would not make her any safer, in fact, in my experience violence always goes down the pecking order, so the only real cure is clarity and respect. I addressed him as big brother yet calmly commanded him and herded him into a position where he couldn't attack. His girlfriend took the opportunity to put her high heals into his lower body with characteristic Sichuan spice. I talked to her as well and finally got them calmed down to a degree as he continued to take high heels. They walked off bickering but at least they weren't combative. In the morning you can hear wailing in the neighborhood. I can only guess that they have relatives in the growing list of victims. It has created a time of depression for many people. At a time like this meditating and keeping your head are more than a health exercise. Knowing that your building may crumble in your sleep and kill your loved ones is a good reminder of imperminence and the way of the warrior. To embrace change in order to find the beauty and meaning in life.

****, Good Luck man!.

If that was the case, what would we call 9/11 or Katrina or the fires in the states and so on.

Sharon Stone's Own Bad Karma (http://www.forbes.com/facesinthenews/2008/05/29/sharon-stone-china-face-markets-cx_po_0529autofacescan01.html)
Parmy Olson, 05.29.08, 2:00 PM ET

LONDON - Ooh la la. In one horrifying moment on the red carpet, Sharon Stone has shown the world what a gamble fashion labels can take when they plaster a famous face on their branding campaigns. Christian Dior has dropped Stone from its Chinese ad campaign after the long-legged Basic Instinct star let slip in a TV interview--now on YouTube--that China's recent earthquake may have been "bad karma" for the country's actions actions against Tibet.

Stone has now apologized for her remarks, saying in a press release via Dior's Shanghai office that she feels "deeply sorry and sad about hurting Chinese people." But the damage has been done--China's official Xinhua News Agency said Thursday that Stone was the "public enemy of all mankind," while myriad blogs have labeled the actress with epithets like "heart of Stone."

This is all unhelpful PR for Christian Dior, which is already reeling from the a Chinese boycott against French goods because of the Olympic torch's recent chaotic run through Paris. The view of a handful of analysts who did not wish to be named is that the fashion label would be looking very carefully at its contract with Stone now. Christian Dior could not be reached for comment.

Stone has been part of a worldwide print and television campaign to promote Dior's Capture skincare line--part of the company's perfumes and beauty division--since 2006 and was chosen, according to unit president Claude Martinez, because of her "worldwide appeal as a beautiful and desirable woman in her forties, who is clever and independent."

Christian Dior is the main holding company for LVMH, controlling 42.4% of its shares and 60.0% of voting rights. LVMH's billionaire boss Bernard Arnault has already insisted that China's boycott against French goods has had "no effect" on his own profits. (See: "LVMH Boss Shrugs Off Beijing Boycott")

But Arnault will be worried about this latest business with Stone. China is a key market for LVMH particularly as consumer spending in Western Europe slows down. HSBC analyst Antoine Belge wrote in a recent note to clients that China would become "the most profitable region for luxury companies in the long run."

LVMH has been expanding its presence in China by buying 55.0% of Wen Jun Spirits, a producer of high-end alcohols, and last October its fashion brand Fendi staged a show at the Great Wall of China.

Stone, who is a recipient of the Harvard Foundation's 2005 Humanitarian Award for her AIDS-awareness work made her controversial comments last week during a Cannes Film Festival red-carpet interview.

"I'm not happy about the way the Chinese are treating the Tibetans because I don't think anyone should be unkind to anyone else," Stone said. "And then this earthquake and all this stuff happened, and then I thought, is that karma? When you're not nice that the bad things happen to you?"

Jackie Chan Records Sorrow-relief Album for Quake Victims (http://english.cri.cn/3086/2008/05/30/1042@363669.htm)
2008-05-30 16:59:57

Kung Fu superstar Jackie Chan organized more than thirty South Korean entertainers to record a music album to raise money for May 12th earthquake victims on Thursday.

The Hong Kong-based action hero says he will make the album available through the Internet and sell a DVD that includes the entire recording process. All the earnings from online downloads and the sales of DVDs will be donated to the disaster-stricken Sichuan people.

Shinhwa member Kim Dong-wan, Chae Yeon, Kim Ah-joong, Wheesung, Park Yong-Ha, Park Jin-Young and other pop stars took part in the charity event.

Chan rushed to Sichuan Province just four days after the earthquake to help the relief effort.

Last week, he told the media that he would make a film about the massive earthquake to tell the many touching stories.

In addition to the movie, he is planning charity events with about 100 other Asian artists, slated to take place in Hong Kong and Chengdu, Sichuan's capital, next month.

for people that are interested in feng shui and Chinese civil war.

there is an interesting series of clips.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZrbK8r4-b8&NR=1

I heard many stories about Chiang Kai Shek last day in China.

during the last few months of 1949, wherever CKS went, CPC army were after him.

CKS went to Guan Zhou (canton). the 4th field army (Lin Biu) went toward him.

CKS went to Kun Ming or Chong Qing. the 3rd field army (Deng Xiao Ping and Chen Yi) went toward him.

CKS left for Cheng Du. the city that had the recent quakes.

With communist army half a day away. He had to decide to go or not to go. There were many obstacles along the airfield in Cheng Du. There were skirmishes between nationalist army and communist advancing small troops outside the airfield.

A decision had to be made. To fly for Taiwan or stay and battle to death?

A lot of people tried to convince him to leave. Everyone knew that this would be last day on mainland China.

CKS made a decision, took a long sigh and said Zhou Ba or let's go.

A few people were singing the national anthem.

So a few C-47's left Cheng Du around 3-4 AM before day break on Dec. 10th, 1949.

It was still dark. So CKS never had a last look at Cheng Du.

Mao was reluctant to enter Beijing, since Yuan Si Kai and Duan Qi Rui both warlords failed when they governed in Beijing.

So Mao went to a daoist priest and asked for some answers. if go into beijing or not.

One day went by, the priest was still silent. Mao then became impatient and said just give me a number or something, So the priest said 99 and 8341.

So Mao entered beijing on sept 9th or 99. 99 is the best combination of lot drawing.

Mao named his bodyguard troop 8341 unit.

Mao's height was 183 cm, his shoe size was 41.

Mao thought everything was good.

After his passing, the real answer came out. 99 meant the day Mao will end his life.

Sure enough, Mao entered beijing on sept 9th and passed away on sept 9th.

He lived to 83 years old and ruled red army for 41 years.

Chinese Parents Protest
Poorly Built Schools
Authorities Delay Draining
Of Lake Formed by Quake
Associated Press
June 3, 2008 7:10 a.m.

DUJIANGYAN, China -- Chinese police dragged away more than 100 parents Tuesday while they were protesting the deaths of their children in poorly constructed schools that collapsed in last month's earthquake.

The parents, many holding pictures of their dead children, were pulled down the street away from a courthouse in Dujiangyan, a resort city northwest of the Sichuan provincial capital of Chengdu.

Associated Press
Dozens of parents who lost children to the May 12 quake protested outside the court house in Dujiangyan, China Tuesday.
"Why?" some of them yelled. "Tell us something," they said, as black-suited police wearing riot helmets pulled at them. The parents had been kneeling in front of the courthouse yelling, "We want to sue." Their children attended a high school in Juyuan, near Dujiangyan, where 270 students died.

The Southern Metropolis News quoted a rescuer as saying last month that rubble from the school showed that no steel reinforcing bars had been used in construction, only iron wire.

"The parents were here to give their report to the court," said one police officer who refused to give his name. Calls to local police were not answered Tuesday.

Accusations that students died in the May 12 earthquake because of shoddy school construction have galvanized anger and grabbed the public's attention. They have also worried the government.

President Hu Jintao and other top leaders have been shown repeatedly on state television visiting children in makeshift schools. The government says the May 12 earthquake destroyed 7,000 classrooms.

Many parents have accused contractors of cutting corners when building the classrooms, resulting in schools that could not withstand the 7.9-magnitude quake. Pictures of collapsed schools surrounded by buildings still standing have stoked the anger.

Tuesday's protest happened while Chinese leader Li Changchun, the country's fifth-ranked ruler, was touring other parts of the city. The state-controlled Xinhua News Agency said Mr. Li was checking heritage sites damaged in the earthquake.

An official from the foreign-affairs office of the local government, Zao Ming, said "this is not a good place to do interviews… In a disaster like this, there will be a lot of opinions. The government will solve their problems."

There were several Japanese reporters at the courthouse. One witness who did not want to be identified said the police told the parents "the Japanese are reporting bad things about you."

An Associated Press reporter and two photographers covering the protest were forcibly dragged up the steps into the courthouse by police trying to prevent them from seeing the demonstration.

The confirmed death toll for China's worst disaster in three decades was raised Tuesday to 69,107, an increase of about 90 from the previous day, with more than 18,200 people still missing, the government said. The quake also left 5 million people homeless.

Authorities Delay Draining of Quake Lake

Meanwhile, Xinhua said authorities have delayed for two days a bid to divert water from a huge lake formed when the quake sent landslides tumbling into a river in Beichuan, in northern Sichuan.

Water levels in the lake had been rising steadily and threatened to flood surrounding areas, prompting authorities to evacuate nearly 200,000 people already uprooted by the quake. But Xinhua said with little rain forecast for the next several days, rescue workers were not likely to start draining off the water until Thursday. The work had been expected to start Tuesday.

Workers have already used heavy earth-moving equipment to dig a runoff channel to remove the water. The government is worried the newly-formed lake could burst, sending a wall of water through a valley.

In an indication of how difficult rescue conditions are in parts of Sichuan, there is still no sign of a helicopter that crashed nearly three days ago while ferrying survivors. Thousands of soldiers have been combing remote mountains in search of the military helicopter.

The Russian-designed Mi-171 transport was carrying 19 people, 14 of them people injured in the quake, when it flew into fog and turbulence and crashed Saturday near the epicenter of the temblor in the town of Wenchuan, state media reported. - Wall Street Journal

2. Si chuan areas are with high mountains and deep waters,

so it is very difficult to fly. When the 15th army (airborne) tried to airdrop 110 troops into quake zone, due to weather, and difficult terrain, they dropped 7 persons, flew back and dropped another 8. then realizing that it was just not safe, and scrapped the mission.

over 100 helicopters were then used.

--

3. 70-80% buildings and houses were collapsed in the area. remaining unsafe buildings were blown away by demolition teams in wen chuan, the epicenter, the town will be a museum, the people and the township/government are relocated to a nearby area.

--

It may take up to 7 years or longer to recover the area.

the big question is still how to build quake safe or resistant houses, maybe just a single story and not multi- or whatever is safe.

agreed that whoever was responsible for construction of tofu school house needs to be held responsible.

SimonM

I taught ESL in one of the rural areas. There is a lot of poverty. You can also find a place where society has largely remained as it was even in imperial times... just with more televisions.

But rural china is a place where:

- Peasants with barely enough food to keep their family sustained will produce a huge pot of bean and pumpkin soup and a basket of dates preserved in baijiu just to be good hosts to unexpected guests.

- Houses are still carved out of the sides of mountains overlooking terraced hills covered in fields of corn, castors and date trees.

- People still put babie's heads on hard pillows to flatten them, still paste red scrolls to their doors at spring festival for luck, still consult a fortune teller to schedule the date of weddings and adhere to a hundred other folk superstitions.

So rural china is neat.

And if you are in rural China, especially in the west and the north, the sky is wide and the emperor is far away.

Rated 6.6 on the richter scale.

At this time it's only got 30 confirmed casualties.

Last month there was a massive mudslide in Linfen triggered by heavy rains and an unsafe retaining wall at an unlicensed mine. The death count there was left at "unknown" after estimates of several hundred were discarded as inaccurate.

UK aid effort starts after western China earthquake (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/8620298.stm)
Police say hundreds of survivors have been pulled from the rubble

British aid agencies have started to co-ordinate emergency help after a powerful earthquake hit western China.

Chinese officials said at least 400 people died and thousands were feared injured after the magnitude-6.9 quake in Yushu county, Qinghai province.

Cornwall-based disaster relief charity ShelterBox has mobilised one of its response teams in China to the area.

The British Red Cross said its Chinese counterparts were sending 500 tents and clothing and quilts for 1,000 people.

'Widespread destruction'

ShelterBox said it was working to assess the areas of greatest need following the tremor 800km (500 miles) south-west of the provincial capital Xining.

General manager Lasse Petersen said: "The local officials are already saying the biggest problem they're facing is lack of tents.

"The situation of several villages higher up in the mountains is still unknown, and roads and communications have been cut.

"Reports suggest there's widespread destruction and we are liaising with our personnel in China to assess the need."

The Red Cross said an assessment team from Qinghai province was in the region, and more charity workers from Beijing would join them on Wednesday.

Wyndham James, Save the Children's director in China, said the charity was contacting organisations in the region and liaising with the Chinese government.

"We will decide shortly with our partners what help we should give and whether we should send in a team to help," he said.

Buildings wrecked

ActionAid China's country director Keshav Gautam said: "In our experience of responding to earthquakes, most recently in Haiti but also in Sichuan in 2008, we know it will be vital to get medical supplies and essential items to Yushu county as fast as possible to help the survivors."

The Disasters Emergency Committee, an umbrella organisation of 13 British humanitarian charities, said it was monitoring the situation in China.

A spokesman said: "An emergency response co-ordinated by the Chinese government is already underway.

"The Chinese authorities have long experience of dealing with natural disasters and have not made an early call for international assistance."

Most of the buildings in the worst-hit town of Jiegu were wrecked, and landslides have cut off roads. Police said hundreds of survivors had been pulled from the rubble.

In 2008, a huge quake struck in neighbouring Sichuan province, about 800km from Yushu, which left 87,000 people dead or missing and five million homeless.

For the Sichuan quake, the timing was serendipitous. It happened just prior to our last TCEC event so we had a lot of things in place to throw a major fundraiser like Martial Arts Benefit for Quake Victims (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=50969). The TCF is currently immersed in promoting WildAid and tiger conservation (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1005792) this year for the year of the tiger. I'm not sure we have the bandwidth to benefit both causes at this time.

As for you doomsayers, here's a hopeful thought from the USGS

Big-quake activity not unusual, scientists say (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/04/15/MNCS1CUP2R.DTL)
John Coté, Chronicle Staff Writer
Thursday, April 15, 2010

First Haiti, then Chile, Mexico and now China - all pummeled by major earthquakes in just over three months.

As a seemingly steady stream of devastating scenes play across television screens, computer monitors and newspapers pages, many wonder if earthquakes are suddenly becoming more common.

The answer, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, is no.

Worldwide, there have been an average of 16 magnitude 7.0 or greater earthquakes - the size that seismologists define as major - each year since 1900, according to the USGS.

The six major earthquakes that have struck in the first four months of this year may be just above average, but 2010 is still "well within the normal range," USGS researchers found.

"It's slightly above average, but (earthquake activity) is not something that happens very close to an average," said Andrew Michael, a seismologist for the USGS in Menlo Park. "You can find four-month periods where there is only one magnitude 7, and then you can find even more during another period."

There is considerable variability from year to year as well. Some years have had as few as six major quakes, most recently in 1989, while there were 32 big temblors in 1943, the federal agency found.

The recent earthquakes have drawn particular attention for a variety of reasons, including that they've struck near populated areas rather than the middle of the ocean, Michael said. The tremendous loss of life in Haiti, the sheer size of the Chile quake and the U.S.-Mexico border quake's impact on both sides of the demarcation line all played roles in the amount of media attention they received, he said.

"You can go back and find very large earthquakes and essentially no one feels them anywhere," Michael said. "Those are the quakes that don't get covered."

On Dec. 23, 2004, for example, an 8.1-magnitude earthquake - larger than San Francisco's devastating 1906 quake - rocked a point in the ocean off of Macquarie Island, located almost halfway between New Zealand and Antarctica. Few, beyond scientists, took notice, Michael said.

He also dismissed the idea that the current earthquakes could affect future seismic activity.

"Does it mean anything for what's going to happen in the future?" Michael said. "To that we say, 'No.' "

The cases have shed light on the murky world of China's 12 tiger farms, which were initially set up by the state in the 1980s to preserve the numbers of animals in existence. They have also underscored changing attitudes toward animal rights in a country where exotic animals have often been treasured less for their rarity and more for their medicinal or culinary benefits. what a way to start the year of the tiger... 11 dead... one left. ;)

As for you doomsayers, here's a hopeful thought from the USGSfunny you say that... in the movie 2012, john cusak says something along the lines of "when they tell you everything is ok, that's when you run."

is this an ancient wisdom passed along thru the ages??

a small forest is better suited for those who wish to run and escape from danger - those who are ignorant stand in a field and cook on an open fire. :D

I wonder what the collective feeling of stupidity will sound like on Dec 22, 2012. :p

I don't think there's any end of the world dates after that unless you count the unix crisis of 2038 or the comet apophis of 2036...

The doom and gloomers, or "those people who don't want to make a life for themselves because they would rather live under the nihilistic assumption that there's no point what with an apocalypse coming", will come up with something to appease themselves an their profound ill thoughts. lol

Movies, humph. lol :p

Everyday is someone's personal apocalypse.

China earthquake toll rises to 1,144 (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2010/04/13/international/i225730D54.DTL)
By ANITA CHANG, Associated Press Writer
Friday, April 16, 2010
(04-16) 09:41 PDT JIEGU, China (AP) --

Tibetan monks prayed Friday over hundreds of bodies at a makeshift morgue next to their monastery after powerful earthquakes destroyed the remote mountain town of Jiegu in western China and left at least 1,144 people dead.

State media on Friday reported that another 417 people remain missing — as rescuers neared the end of the 72-hour period viewed as best for finding people alive. They continued to dig for survivors in the rubble, often by hand.

The official toll was likely to climb further. Gerlai Tenzing, a red-robed monk from the Jiegu Monastery, estimated that about 1,000 bodies had been brought to a hillside clearing in the shadow of the monastery. He said a precise count was difficult because bodies continued to trickle in and some had already been taken away by family members.

Hundreds of the bodies were being prepared for a mass cremation Saturday morning. Genqiu, a 22-year-old monk, said it was impossible to perform traditional sky burials for all. Tibetan sky burials involve chopping a body into pieces and leaving it on a platform to be devoured by vultures.

"The vultures can't eat them all," said Genqiu, who like many Tibetans goes by one name.

China Central Television reported that a 13-year-old Tibetan girl was pulled from the toppled two-story Minzu Hotel on Friday after a sniffer dog alerted rescuers to her location. The girl, identified as Changli Maomu, was freed after a crane lifted a large concrete block out of the rubble, it said. Her condition was good and she was taken to a medical station for treatment, it said.

Relief workers have estimated that 70 percent to 90 percent of the town's wood-and-mud houses collapsed when the earthquakes hit Yushu county, in the western province of Qinghai, Wednesday morning. The strongest of the quakes was measured at magnitude 6.9 by the U.S. Geological Survey and 7.1 by China's earthquake administration.

Xinhua reported that as of Friday evening the confirmed death toll had risen to 1,144, up from 791 in the afternoon. It said 11,477 people were injured, 1,174 severely.

Rescue spokesman Xia Xueping was cited as saying they now had more heavy equipment available — speeding up the process of recovering the dead.

Many survivors shivered through a third night outdoors as they waited for tents to arrive. Hundreds gathered on a plaza around a 50-foot (15-meter) tall statue of the mythical Tibetan King Gesar, wrapped in blankets taken from shattered homes.

Police had to intervene Friday to prevent young men from grabbing tents out of the back of a truck.

"I saw trucks almost attacked by local people because of the lack of food and shelter," said Pierre Deve, a program director at the Yushu-based community development organization Snowland Service Group. "It started yesterday, but you still see some things like this today. It's getting better. Chinese authorities are doing well."

Nonetheless, Deve said his group, which plans to distribute food, medicine, tents, clothes and bedding, was moving out of Jiegu in case things got worse.

"We want to have a place out of the city where we can communicate in a good way, protect the things we need to give to people who need them," he said.

China Central Television reported that about 40,000 tents would be in place by Saturday, enough to accommodate all survivors. Also on the way was more equipment to help probe for signs of life under the debris, it said. The tools include small cameras and microphones attached to poles that can be snaked into crevices as well as heat and motion sensors.

At one collapsed building where people were believed trapped, about 70 civilians, including three dozen Tibetan monks in crimson robes, joined rescue workers.

"One, two, three," the monks chanted as they used wooden beams to try to push away a section of collapsed wall. They later tied ropes to a slab of concrete and dragged it away.

The effort was hampered by the area's altitude, about 13,000 feet (4,000 meters), and Xinhua reported two dozen trained rescuers had to stop working because of altitude sickness. Sniffer dogs were also affected, it said.

Xinhua quoted a local education official as saying 66 children and 10 teachers had died, mostly in three schools, but more remained missing.

Thousands of students died during a massive Sichuan quake in 2008 when their poorly built schools collapsed. But unlike in Sichuan — where schools toppled as other buildings stood — nearly everything fell over in Yushu.

To underline official concern for a Tibetan area that saw anti-government protests two years ago, Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in Yushu county Thursday evening to meet survivors. President Hu Jintao, in Brazil after visiting Washington, canceled scheduled stops in Venezuela and Peru to come home.

Wen, the sympathetic, grandfatherly face of the usually distant Chinese leadership, sought to provide comfort and build trust with the mostly Tibetan victims of the quake.

"The disaster you suffered is our disaster. Your suffering is our suffering. Your loss of loved ones is our loss. We mourn as you do. It breaks our hearts," Wen said in remarks repeatedly broadcast on state TV.

Wen also repeated nearly word for word the promise he made during the Sichuan earthquake: "As long as there's a glimmer of hope, we will spare no effort and never give up."

PTI, Apr 19, 2010, 04.00pm IST

BEIJING: Five days after the devastating earthquake in northwestern China, rescuers today pulled out a four-year-old girl and an elderly Tibetan woman alive under the rubble of a collapsed building, even as the death toll rose to 1,944.

68-year-old Wujin Cuomao and the young Cairen Baji had been trapped for more than 123 hours when rescuers finally managed to pull them out alive in Jiegu, which was the worst hit town in the Qinghai province.

Relatives kept the duo alive by sending them food and water through gaps in rubble with the help of bamboo poles, the official China Central Television reported. It aired the footage of the duo being taken out of the rubble.

Officials put the death toll from the 7.1 magnitude quake at 1,944 and the injured at 12,135. Official Xinhua news agency said out of the injured, 1,434 are in serious condition.

Convoys of military trucks, civilian aid vehicles and ambulances headed to the worst quake-hits areas on the Tibetan plateau.

The rush for tents and relief goods increased with hundreds of people lining up at the relief centres as the extreme cold weather persisted.

Till yesterday 25,000 tents, 52,000 quilts, 16,000 coats and 850 tonnes of instant noodles and drinking water have been dispatched to the quake hit areas.

China has also welcomed aid from countries. Meanwhile, Hong Kong-based Hollywood star Jackie Chan announced a cash donation of three million yuan ($439,477 ) to quake victims.

Chan and Taiwanese actress Vivian Hsu flew to the quake hit areas yesterday and met several people in relief camps.

Chan also donated 1,500 boxes of biscuits, 700 cotton coats and 100 boxes of bottled water. Hsu donated 1,000 cotton-padded quilts.

A geological reconnaissance to turn the quake-hit area into a "plateau ecological tourist centre" by relocating the towns was carried out today.

The framework plan is getting ready to turn the quake-devastated township into "a plateau ecological tourist city," the provincial government of Qinghai announced today.

A team of 16 experts from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and the provincial housing bureau were conducting a field study of the quake zone, Xinhua reported.
I posted Jackie's donation on his charity thread (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1006551#post1006551).

Four days after the April 14 Yushu earthquake, movie star Jackie Chan stood in a makeshift orphanage in Yushu and cheered up the children.

Besides a 3-million-yuan donation, Chan also brought 100 boxes of mineral water, 700 items of clothing and 1,500 boxes of biscuits.

"Almost all the houses are unlivable. Some of them are still standing, but the walls are cracked inside. I asked people if there was anyone trapped under a particular house, but they had no idea. I really wish I could be a superman and lift the debris up all on my own. At this moment, I feel so useless. But I know there are many people offering help and I will definitely come back again."

Actor Jet Li arrived in quake-hit Yushu on April 16. As well as bringing more than 10 trucks of food and clothing, he also brought over a hundred volunteers - including four psychologists and one accountant.

"I was abroad when the earthquake happened, but I have an excellent team, the One Foundation. They put together four rescue teams and gathered materials in Xining. Since I arrived in Yushu, our foundation has received 42 million yuan from around the world. I am proud of the online donors because about 65 percent of the money has come from them. Our accountant will make sure every penny is used to help Yushu, just as the donors desire."

From April 15 to 18, singer Han Hong showed up in the Lama Temple in Beijing to collect money for the victims in Yushu. Since she is a judge of the ongoing China Central Television Youth Singing Competition, she has to record every afternoon. As a result of this timetable, she decided to hold charity events every morning.

"Actor Deng Chao and actress Sun Li were the first ones to call me. They said they would contact my team and donate money. They are really good people. Every time I hold this kind of event, they are always the first ones."

As of April 20, Han Hong has collected nearly one and a half million yuan. As a celebrity, she hopes her efforts can attract more people's attention and highlight the issue of Yushu.

"One person is not enough. Even 10 celebrities are not enough. We need everyone's help. We should not give up our courage and strong spirit. We have conquered the Sichuan earthquake; we will stick together and win this battle as well."

To collect money for Yushu, China Central Television held a special charity program this Tuesday. During the three and a half hour show, viewers donated more than 2.1 billion yuan. Over 300 celebrities performed at the event, including singer Faye Wong, magician Liu Qian and actress Zhang Ziyi. A special feature of this event was that there were no solo performances. All the acts were group presentations, and no names appeared on screen. Comedian Zhao Benshan personally donated 2 million yuan.

Action star Jackie Chan and more than 300 entertainers have raised 4.5 million US dollars in a charity concert to help victims of a deadly earthquake in China this month, a report said Tuesday.

The five-hour show on Monday evening also featured stars from China and Taiwan seeking donations, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

"We as a group of artists should make use of our influence to encourage everyone to dedicate their support in any form, especially at such a critical moment," Hong Kong actor Donnie Yen was quoted as saying.

Last week, China held a national day of mourning for the more than 2,200 people who died after the powerful 6.9 magnitude quake struck northwestern China.

Hollywood actor Jackie Chan has joined more than 100 stars from Hong Kong, China and Taiwain in a charity concert for the recent earthquake in China.

The five-hour gig in Hong Kong raised $4.8m (£3.1m) for victims of the quake, which killed more than 2,200 people.

The disaster struck China's Qinghai province earlier this month.

Chan, who visited the affected area last week, featured in a video produced for the fundraiser, which showed him living with the victims.

Donnie Yen, Leon Lai, Sammi Cheng and Barbie Hsu all participated in the Artistes 414 Fundraising Campaign concert.

Actor Andy Lau said: "The quake area is located in a plateau. It's ten times worse than we thought. And the winter will come soon. It is urgent to take action."

One week after the area was devastated by the disaster, China observed a national day of mourning for victims.

Flags flew at half mast across the country and public entertainment was curtailed as a mark of respect

Death toll rises to 80 after China earthquakes; hundreds injured (http://articles.cnn.com/2012-09-08/asia/world_asia_china-earthquakes_1_death-toll-quake-in-sichuan-province-earthquakes)
September 08, 2012|By the CNN Wire Staff

The death toll from earthquakes that rocked southwest China rose to 80 on Saturday, after the tremors destroyed roads and communication lines, and forced tens of thousands of evacuations, state media reported.

More than 800 others were injured in the Friday quakes, according to Xinhua news agency. Officials fear the death toll may rise as they scramble to reach affected areas.

Large rocks blocked roads, and communication lines and other infrastructure were downed, hampering rescue efforts.

About 100,000 people have been evacuated and 100,000 others are in need of relocation, state media reported.

Premier Wen Jiabao, who will direct rescue efforts, inspected stricken areas Saturday and visited the injured.

Initial estimates put the "direct economic losses" from the tremors at more than half a billion dollars, the news agency said.

The four earthquakes struck near the border of Yunnan and Guizhou provinces, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Their magnitudes ranged between 4.8 and 5.6, according to the U.S. agency.

All four quakes struck at a depth of 10 kilometers (six miles).

The southwestern region of China is prone to earthquakes. In May 2008, a magnitude 7.9 quake in Sichuan province caused widespread devastation, killing at least 69,000 people.

D@mn, hopefully this doesn't leave Dan stranded or worse.

Do they have the infrastructure to deal with this in the first place? That area, I mean? They say that road blockages and building damage has "hampered" efforts. But shouldn't a proper emergency response infrastructure take this into account?

Or is the real problem the HUGE population? Is it unrealistic to keep this many people in one area safe?

I am pretty confident with our preparedness over here in Vancouver. No doubt bad things will happen, but I think we have enough in place to prevent alot of suffering. Only truly unique situations will screw us over, no Katrina unpreparedness type of situation happening here. The city core and uber rural areas will suffer way more than the burbs. We really stepped it up over the last twenty years. Especially in our building code and quality of materials. One without the other is useless. China can have all the code in the world, but as long as they use cheap and substandard materials they will suffer the consequences.

KUNMING, March 3 (Xinhua) -- Thirty people have been confirmed injured, including three seriously, after a 5.5-magnitude earthquake hit southwest China's Yunnan Province on Sunday afternoon.

Some 12,000 people have also been evacuated, said the provincial Civil Affairs Department.

The quake hit Eryuan County, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture at 1:41 p.m.. The epicenter was in Xishan Township with a depth of 9 km.

Latest statistics showed 92,000 residents were affected by the quake, while 83,434 houses were damaged and 1,781 others collapsed. Infrastructure including schools, transportation and communications systems, water and power lines was damaged to various degrees.

The Yunnan provincial government initiated a grade-III emergency response earlier and later upgraded it to grade-II.

The Civil Affairs Department said 3,000 tents, 7,000 cotton quilts and 7,000 coats were being sent to the quake-hit area.

A quake relief team consisting of more than 400 policemen, fire fighters and soldiers has been dispatched.

Some 34 aftershocks have been recorded after the quake.

In history, 19 earthquakes of magnitude 5 or above occurred within a 50-km radius of the epicenter.

China: Quake aid slowly reaches villagers (http://www.sfgate.com/default/article/China-Quake-aid-slowly-reaches-villagers-4451995.php)

Lushan, China --

Luo Shiqiang sat near chunks of concrete, bricks and a ripped orange sofa and told how his grandfather was just returning from feeding chickens when their house collapsed and crushed him to death in this weekend's powerful earthquake in southwestern China.

"We lost everything in such a short time," the 20-year-old college student said Sunday. He said his cousin also was injured in the collapse but that other members of his family were spared because they were out working in the fields of hard-hit Longmen village in Lushan county.

Saturday's earthquake in Sichuan province killed at least 188 people, injured more than 11,000 and left almost two dozen missing, mostly in the rural communities around Ya'an city, along the same fault line where a devastating quake to the north killed more than 90,000 people five years ago in one of China's worst natural disasters.

The Lushan and Baoxing counties hardest hit Saturday had escaped the worst of the damage in the 2008 quake, and residents said they benefited little from the region's rebuilding after the disaster, with no special reinforcements made or new evacuation procedures introduced in their remote communities.

Luo said he wished more had been done to make his community's buildings quake-resistant. "Maybe the country's leaders really wanted to help us, but when it comes to the lower levels, the officials don't carry it out," he said.

Relief teams flew in helicopters and dynamited through landslides Sunday to reach some of the most isolated communities where rescuers led sniffer dogs through piles of brick, concrete and wood debris to search for survivors.

Many residents complained that although emergency teams were quick to carry away bodies and search for survivors, they had so far done little to distribute aid. "No water, no shelter," read a handwritten sign held up by children on a roadside in Longmen.

The quake - measured by China's earthquake administration at magnitude 7.0 and by the U.S. Geological Survey at 6.6 - struck shortly after 8 a.m. Saturday.

A lot of people in Kunming actually felt the tremors from this one (though I didn't).

Jackie Chan charity 'hacked' for three days, Yaan donations disrupted (http://www.scmp.com/news/china/article/1222803/jackie-chan-charity-hacked-three-days-yaan-donations-disrupted)

The website of Jackie Chan’s Beijing-based charity organisation “returned to normal” operations on Wednesday after being hacked for three days, the Beijing News reported on Thursday.

The Hong Kong action star announced on Tuesday on his personal weibo account: “Yaan is in need of disaster relief funds right now and while I have been co-ordinating action, the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation’s website has been continually attacked and tampered with”.

An error that read “warning: this page may have been illegally tampered with” began to appear on the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation Beijing website, chenglooncishan.org, beginning on Sunday, the report said.

Chan also posted a mobile phone number with which potential donors could give money via text message. A “donation agreement” would be sent to donors via e-mail, he said.

One weibo user said he would stop donating to the charity temporarily.

Last year, the charity was implicated by name in an alleged embezzlement scandal involving the China Charities Aid Foundation (CCAFC). Columnist Zhou Xiaoyun accused the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation of receiving "18 million yuan in illegal funds" from the CCAFC. Both charities have denied the allegations.
There's a special place in hell for those who tamper with charitable orgs.

Meanwhile, Jet's One Foundation (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=36920) did a lot for the cause.

After a long career as a martial arts movie star, in 2007 Jet Li (李连杰) put his acting career on the backburner and turned to philanthropy.

Li, who was born in Beijing but is now a naturalized Singaporean citizen, first established the One Foundation Project in April 2007. However, it was only after various trials and tribulations that in 2011 he was able to turn the One Foundation into one of China's first private charities.

In the early hours of this morning, the One Foundation announced via its official Weibo account that as of midnight on Apr 22 (Monday), a total of 610,000 donations had been made by individuals and companies via online donation platforms set up on various popular internet portals like Sina, Tencent and Tmall. The One Foundation had received more than 46 million yuan in donations through these online platforms and a further 44 million yuan in bank transfers.

Jet Li also gave updates on the assistance that was arriving in the disaster zone via his own Weibo account.

Early media reports compared the over 10 million yuan that the One Foundation had collected by 8pm on the evening of the quake to the 140,000 yuan that the Red Cross Society of China was said to have received by 7pm on the same evening. Some commentators linked this early discrepancy to the effect of the Guo Meimei (郭美美) scandal of two years ago.

Public trust towards China Red Cross suffered a major blow after a social media frenzy surrounding a young lady with the Weibo handle "Guo Meimei Baby" who claimed to be connected to the charity posted images of her lavish lifestyle on the social media platform. It was later revealed that she had no connection to the Red Cross. The scandal exposed a lack of transparency in the operations of the charity. An announcement that China Red Cross Society had dispatched a team to investigate the situation on the ground that was posted to their official Weibo account attracted more than 100,000 comments, many of them telling the charity where to go.

However, as of 5pm this afternoon, the China Red Cross Society had received over 235 million yuan in donations, according to their website.

As of 6am this morning, authorities say that the strong earthquake that hit a mountainous region in the western Chinese province of Sichuan on Saturday morning had led to 193 deaths, 25 missing and 12,211 injured.

5.9-magnitude earthquake strikes southwest China; 4 dead (http://www.cnn.com/2013/08/30/world/asia/china-earthquake/index.html)
By David Simpson, for CNN

(CNN) -- A 5.9-magnitude earthquake killed at least four people Saturday morning in southwestern China, state media reported.

Officials reported 10 injuries as emergency teams began to respond, the Xinhua News Agency said.

The state-owned news agency quoted Yunnan provincial officials as saying that 600 residential units collapsed. An additional 55,000 residential units were damaged, and 9,200 people had been forced to relocate, Xinhua reported.

The quake -- with a depth of 10 kilometers -- hit in remote areas near the border of the Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Roads were blocked in some villages by boulders rolling down mountains, and 17 people on three tourist buses were trapped by landslides, Xinhua said.

The Civil Affairs Ministry in Yunnan province was sending tents and clothing, Xinhua said.

The epicenter was near Benzilan Township, the USGS reported.

"We are heading to Benzilan," Liao Wencai, vice secretary of the Deqen County Committee of the Communist Party of China, told Xinhua. "The telecommunication there has been cut off, and many residents cannot be reached by mobile phone."

Xinhua reported it reached a Benzilan resident who said people "rushed outdoors hastily" because of the strength of the quake, but houses there did not collapse.

On Wednesday, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake hit the same region.

Blocked Roads Leave Some Largely Cut Off From Aid in Southwest China

The death toll from Sunday's 6.1-magnitude earthquake in China's Yunnan province jumped to least 589 people Wednesday. WSJ's Ramy Inocencio asks China Editor Carlos Tejada in Beijing for the latest.

YINPING, China—This devastated village in southwestern China illustrates why the death toll from an earthquake three days ago has risen quickly—and why it could rise still.

China on Wednesday raised the death toll from Sunday's 6.1 magnitude earthquake in southwestern China's Yunnan province to 589 people from 410 the day before. Chinese authorities said blocked roads and disrupted communications made it difficult to access certain areas, contributing to a slow count.

An additional 2,400 were injured, authorities said, and 229,700 had been relocated.

Rescuers made progress after construction workers replaced a collapsed bridge with a temporary steel one, helping supplies pour into the village of Longtoushan, the epicenter of the quake. That allowed rescuers to reach out to more remote hamlets.

Still, many smaller villages are accessible only by single narrow roads that were buried or swept away by landslides. Further rescue efforts are likely to be hampered by rain, which threatened to fall on and off in parts of the area Wednesday, while Chinese authorities warned of the potential for strong aftershocks in the coming days.

Yinping, a village of several hundred people that depends on growing corn and potatoes, represents the challenges rescuers face. The village lies 2½ hours on foot from Longtoushan, accessible only by dirt paths. Its thick vegetation and mountainous terrain make it hard to bring in stronger construction material such as steel, resulting in local homes made out of less-sturdy stuff.

The earthen walls of many of its homes crumbled during the quake, which hit Sunday afternoon local time. It wasn't clear how many of the residents were dead or injured. In one cluster of 200 people and 37 families, 12 people were killed, four were seriously injured and another was missing, residents said. They said an additional 20 had died nearby.

Despite a massive effort involving thousands of military personnel and rescue workers, aid hasn't reached Yinping as fast as residents needed.

Rescuers arrived to dig out the living and the dead here Monday, but the work was slow. "We pulled three children out today," said resident Qi Zhongcheng, pointing to a makeshift tomb erected on top of the remains of one house out of corrugated tin and broken tree branches. "That one was 15."

But supplies have been slower. A shipment of instant noodles came Wednesday afternoon. Before that, residents said, there was no food other than some grain scraped together from collapsed houses, some potatoes dug out of the ground and preserved pork they salvaged from the rubble. By Wednesday night, they were still without bottled water.

Some rescue workers left tents, but they sat unused Wednesday night. The rescue workers had told residents the tents were unsafe because of falling rocks from distant cliffs. Also, there weren't enough to go around, and nobody appeared to want to take advantage.

Mr. Qi said the lack of help had left them feeling anxious about being forgotten.

"We're happy to have you here to report as long as it means the government knows we don't have anything up here," one villager said after journalists arrived.

I can't speak for the US, but in BC I am familiar with the seismic codes. It would have to be a MASSIVE earthquake to kill 500 people here. Unless it was some freak coincidence that a ton of people happened to congregate in an old grandfathered building. But even then, they aren't exempt to the regs, just a lil relaxed given the context. The only realistic situation that I can see is if it was offshore and the resulting tsunami did the dirty work. But even then, it would have to be in just the right place so that Vancouver island didn't get the brunt of it, making Vancouver the frontline. Considering the lay of the land, this is also unlikely. In the last 20 years or so we have really stepped up our game as far as preventative measures are concerned.

YUNNAN: At least 19 people were injured when a magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck China’s Yunnan province on Sunday morning (Aug 17). Local media reports said rescue operations were underway.

According to local media, the quake struck Yongshan county in Zhaotong prefecture. Pictures posted on social media showed rescuers making their way through debris lying on roads and broken tiles scattered outside residents' houses.

China Daily also reported on Sunday afternoon that aftershocks were felt in the area, and warned residents to be on alert.

A moderate 5.1 magnitude earthquake also struck China's southwestern Sichuan province early Sunday (Aug 16), US geologists said. The quake struck at 0607 GMT +8 (2207 GMT Saturday) at a depth of 10 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.

The USGS said the epicentre of the earthquake was two kilometres southwest of Xiluodu and 96 kilometres from Zhaotong in neighbouring Yunnan province, where a deadly quake two weeks ago killed 615 people and injured 3,143.

Yeah man, that's super sad. I couldn't even begin to think about how to tackle that problem. One region at a time, starting with the highest risk, I guess. It's not like they CAN'T do it, more of a priority thing.

Are there more earthquakes in China or are we just hearing about it more? Anytime I see an increase in reporting any event, especially of the disastrous nature, I always have to wonder is it just cause we're plugged in, or is it an actual increase?

When it comes down to it, they simply have too many people. Something that is really hard to understand from our perspective. We really do have it good here. We can complain about this and that, but we are head and shoulders above most of the world as far as quality of life is concerned.

The official death toll from the earthquake stands at just one person. Huang Fugang, director of the provincial seismological administration, has attributed the low casualty count to the prevalence of wood-framed homes in the area which are able to better withstand earthquakes.

A powerful earthquake with a 6.3 magnitude struck Sichuan province late Saturday afternoon, Sina News reported. At least four have been reported dead, with more than 50 injured and around 25,000 houses damaged.

http://shanghaiist.com/attachments/yuensin/sichuan-earthquake-1.png

Xinhua also reported that the earthquake forced students to flee from a primary school in Tagong town, situated near the epicenter, with 42 of these students injured in a stampede caused by the rush. Currently, all of the injured have been sent to Ganzi People's Hospital in Kangding. Rescuers rushed to the epienter around 6.40pm in the evening.

http://shanghaiist.com/attachments/yuensin/sichuan-earthquake-2.png

Residents reported feeling a strong tremor in Chengdu, about 325 km north of the epicenter, according to chinanews.com.

"The house windows were shaking violently. Some people rushed out of the building," a woman in Chengdu said. While no building collapses have been reported, many have sustained injuries from the wreckage caused by shaking houses, and multiple cracks have been seen on other buildings. The situation seems to be stable for now, with no major traffic flows or utility supplies being disrupted.

Large numbers of rescue workers have been mobilized to deal with the extent of the damage.
