For anyone interested, a company called Ground Zero Entertainment is releasing a bunch of SB movies on DVD. Right now, Kid with the Golden Arm, Dirty Ho, Return of the Master Killer, and Legendary Weapons are out, with a bunch more coming later in the year. I have Golden Arm and Dirty Ho, and they're both clear, widescreen prints----awesome! The choreography of the final 3 on 2 fight in Dirty Ho is really astounding--so complex.

They are releasing these ab0ut a d0zen a m0nth. 0f the 0nes I have, I w0uld m0st highly rec0mmend "Kidnap" a very gritty film n0ir that I liked al0t. very t0ugh atm0sphere and crime fr0m the criminals perspective, and "the three smiles" a traditi0nal Huangmei 0pera, n0t as exciting but very c00l if y0u're int0 Chinese culture. Pers0nally I'd skip "c0me drink with me" "Empress D0wager" and stuff like that. They are classics, but they haven't aged well in my 0pini0n. Some amazing titles on the horizon....

Also, I get mine for 8 bucks apiece in Chinatown, but they appear to be going for a little more online. I've only seen one on dvd (clans of Intrigue)

I'd heard bad things about vcd's but they look fine to me. The difference is like 16 as opposed to 32 bit on a computer. I just got one called "Journey to the West" which is a sort of Wizard of Oz thing with a pig man and a monkey guy. Pretty weird/ cool.

36th Chamber Of Shaolin, The - Once he gets to the Temple, you know it's on. One of the few kung fu flicks they haven't tried to remake. San te makes his way throught the infamous 36 chambers of Shaolin. But can he pass the final test? and what about the suffering back in his village? This has been widely available for a long time. An obvious choice.
•
Blood Brothers, The already widely available. Has a real Epic feel. the Martial arts are basic as it is relatively early in the cycle (early 70's) but a great movie nonetheless with themes of bravery and integrity that are still hallmarks of most action films.
Bride Napping, My least favorite of the Huangmei operas. The look is ancient chinese, but the tone is like an episode of "Friends" Ivy Ling Poh even looks a little like Phoebe. Not without it's charms, but the subject matter is just so light. Not a great starting point.

Buddha's Palm Why this movie wasn't bootlegged or other wise made available before I have no idea. For fans of Hong Kong deranged classics like Drunken Wutang and Zu Warriors from Magic Mountain, this is a must have. It has Lo Lei in it, which generally means you should get it. one of the best here.

•Cave Of Silken Web, The There are 4 parts to this series, which I like so much I even bought th figurines of the main characters (piggy, monkey and two other guys) This one feels a little edited (nudity etc) but still fun. These movies are very colorful and have the feel of the "unearthed classics" that they are. This one has my favorite cover art as well, with pretty ladies with seven arms tempting the travellers. There's even a little monkey kung fu. Lots of magical powers and ancient chinese setting. You get the picture

Challenge Of The Gamesters Solid James Bond type flick with alot of mah jong playing and outwitting and so forth. A welcome respite to alot of the less guy friendly offereings in the collection.
•

Clans Of Intrigue Chu Yuans movies are cool, but they all look the same. Don't get me wrong I like them. They contain alot of elements of what would eventually make unknown kung fu flicks so addictive, like the mysterious villains and secret passageways and so forth. Try it, you might like it.

Come Drink With Me - This is more of interest to film historians than movie fans i think. Not bad, but it was done a lot better (and worse) later.
•
Delinquent, The - This is precicely what I want from and old school kung fu flick. Brutally effective in it's storytelling and fight scenes. With a modern setting.
Emperor and His Brother, The confusing sub standard chu yuan thing, with a decent finale •

Empress Dowager, The - See Come Drink With Me review. With much more drama. •

Family Light Affair - I liked this alot. featuring Kara Hui, who appeared in some of the best flicks in the Shaw canon. A good justification for this whole reissue project. About a family from mainland China who comes to Hong Kong only to find that themselves homeless. The male lead has a Buster Keoton sort of straight faced thing that is very charming. A comedy / drama I guess. One of my favorite scenes features the only martial arts in the movie. The younger daughter is being persued by a police officer she busts out some authentic looking kung fu (longfist complete with butterfly kick) the first time you've ever been surpried by the appearance of this type of fighting in a Hong Kong film
•
Girlie Bar, The - entertaining / dark exploitation flick but it seems a few steps away from a final draft. Great Jazz and blues can be improvised, but certain things really need to be composed to give an audience direction. Lots of pretty girls, preposterous coincidences and silly overacting. at the girlie bar there

Golden Buddha, The
•
Grand Substitution, The - They've been telling this story for a long time and it shows. This is a huangmei opera. Generally this means there is some singing, but not the acrobats you'd see in the more well known beijing opera. One of the best things I''ve seen in a while. As in more modern stories, unrequited heroism in the face of corrupt leadership is one of the main topics. Pure bliss
Heroes Two -Alexander Fu Sheng was sort of a cross between Chow yun Fat and Bruce Lee. This is one of his best true to the artform, straight up kung fu flicks. The last scene features some of the Tibetan Lama style kung fu, rarely seen in the movies and very brutal. Like a cross between kung fu, kickboxing, and indian war dance and a gorilla, making this an pbvious choice for those knowledgable / curious about such things.
•
Heroic Ones, The -see Come Drink With Me review

Hong Kong Nocturne -musicals are not my thing!! Entertaining nonetheless.

Hong Kong Playboys •
Hong Kong Rhapsody
•
House Of 72 Tenants, The •

Human Lanterns -if you rerelease an exploitation classic, you can't edit out the exploitation!!! This keeps this campy horror/ kung fu deal from greatness. It's not very scary, but entertaining and lo lieh is in it, so, for me, it's a must have
•
Illicit Desire - confusing, generally non essential (and non erotic) offering from this director, who's stuff is very hit or miss as far as I've seen.
Inside The Forbidden City - See The Grand Substitution review. awesome
•
Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan - Do you know what a courtesan is? This very cool flick features a theme that pops up from time to time in Hong Kong cinema, a woman is wronged and spends the rest of the movie exacting revenge, either in a straightforward or underhanded manner. recommended•

Iron Bodyguard
•
Kidnap -nice dark action movie about a kidnapping, showing the criminals in a sympathetic light.

Killer Clans - standard Chu Yuan action/ sword thing. A shout out to the pioneers.

Killer Snakes, The- the Chinese "Williard" and then some. Very dark claustrophobic every seems to be sweating all the time horror flick featuring S&M, komodo dragons and snakes, and generally physical and mental brutality. Very highly recommended •

Kingdom And The Beauty, The - this was a great historical epic, and also is one of the few that doesn't use the letterbox format, which makes it much better for those of us with small tvs! (Chu Yuans films are like the cheap seats view for me) . The only problem I have is that the leads seem a little too old to be playing their sort of romeo and Juliet type roles.
•
Kiss of Death, The -this is better than 10 charlie's angles. This is the female revenge tale again. After she is gang raped, Lo Lieh trains her in a very brutal version of kung fu, which basically is she smashes/ stabs/ and otherwise destroys the very unfortunate male assailants balls. This has to be one of the strongest pro- feminist films ever, at least superficially. Done the right way, dark and brutal. •

Knight of Knights, The
•
Last Tempest, The •

Last Woman Of Shang, The - female revenge on an epic scale, starring the much beloved Linda Lin Dai. very satisfactory
•
Legend Of The Bat - Chu Yuan•

Let's Make Laugh
•
Lizard, The - I liked this alot. The Lizard isn't a supernatural sort of thing, just an ordinary Robin Hood type cat burgular with Clark Kent type secret identity. likeable cast. •

Love Eterne, The -enjoyable if generally lightweight huangmei opera. came with a collectors edition fan! not a good starting point, but it has its moments. It has rather a lot of very repetitive singing which takes some getting used to. One interesting thing: the male role is played by a woman and the story is about a woman who dresses as a man to go to a university. So they have some fun with that.

•

Merry Wife, The -enjoyable lightweight comedy, a chinese "to sir with love". The leads are likeable and the babyfaced female lead is cute. adds some variety to my collection
•
Mighty Peking Man, The - The Chinese Hong Kong. Silly/ awesome b movie classic•

Millionaire Chase, The
•
Monkey Goes West, The -the first and lesser of the monkey and his crew movies. colorful and enjoyable nonethless, though the pacing is not exactly brilliant •

My Name Ain't Suzie -see The Girlie Bar review.

Na Cha The Great - A personal favorite. Alexander Fu Sheng stars as the main character (what a great title!). while some may see it as low budget, I found it to be very colorful, with lots of supernatural stuff and taoist flavor. •

Notorious Eight
•
Passing Flickers - I liked this alot. Memories of a Hong kong film director. Behind the scenes shenanagins like actors dressed as gangsters storming on to the wrong (anicent) set, a martial artist so involved with his performance that he doesn't notice that the crew has packed up and left. Makes fun of the cliches we love in a sentimental way.

•

Princess Iron Fan -the best (so far, there's one more) of this fantasy series. •

•

Three Smiles, The - enjoyable light as air huangmei opera
•
Till The End Of Time -star Jenny Hu is very pretty, but this is a silly light comedy/ musical and not what I'd call essential. Not bad though

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star- bizarre in the world of Hoing kong film usually means flying zombie heads and naked ghosts. This is bizarre in a different way, thought still very slapstick. Highly recommended to fans of the whole early eighties vibe like Ghostbusters and stuff like that. Personally, I prefer the naked zombies!!!
•

Vermilion Door- People expected alot for their money I guess. This drama goes into melodrama pretty quick for my tastes. good, but a little sopa opera-ey
•
Voyage Of Emperor Chien Lung, The- this was supposedly a comedy, but I wasn't laughing. avoid

When The Clouds Roll By -a little too sopa opera-ey for my tastes again, but not a bad little movie

Though the Shaw Brothers movie studio has not made a movie since 1985 or so
before closing down. But the movie's studios legacy lives on. Chinese movie producer
Sir Run Run Shaw produced hit and hit for the studio like 5 Fingers of Death, Five Deadly Venoms,
and Shaolin Master Killer. Sir Run Run passed recently but his legacy is preserved by
Celestial Pictures who now owns the rights to a good percentage of the Shaws back catalog.

So I thought this forum would be a perfect place to have a Thread
dedicated to the studio for Kung Fu fans to enjoy.
