All we ask is that you leave your ego at the door, and come with an open mind ready to train with one of the best!

Yin Fu Bagua Intensive (Single & Double Palm Change / Xiao Kai Men)
Friday September 5th 1pm – 5pm

Yin Fu Bagua is characterized by swift strikes, deceptive footwork, quick throws, and devastating joint locks. In this intensive workshop Mike Martello will take us through the basics of Yin Fu Bagua sharing with us both form and function. Whether or not you have trained Bagua before you will sure not want to miss this exciting opportunity to train with one of the best Chinese martial arts teachers in the west! You can expect to learn:

• Single & Double Palm Changes (core of the system) Including applications
• Xiao Kai Men (Little Open Gate) form which incorporates the palm changes with other basic movements giving the student a systemized set to practice
• Proper structure and form while walking the circle
• The importance of alignment
• Kicking (Ti) / Striking (Da) / Throwing (Shuai) / Locking (Na) applications of Yin Fu Bagua

The Principles of the 8 Hard & the 12 Soft as Taught via the Pai – An Sets

Session 1 Sat. September 6th 12:30 – 3:30pm
Session 2 Sat. September 6th 5 – 8pm
Session 3 Sun. September 7th 10am – 1pm
Session 4 Sun. September 7th 3pm – 6pm

Pai - An translates into “slap - press” techniques. These are short two person drills, drawn from Northern Praying Mantis, that flow into repetition sets that can end with throws, locks, strikes, or kicks. Used to teach agility, reaction, speed, as well as teaching the student how to look for openings in attack and defense, these techniques will offer a variety of insights into the fighting theory, and logic of Northern Mantis, and will transcend all stylistic differences to enhance your own personal martial skill.
The core of the theory of Northern Praying Mantis is the spontaneous application of the eight hard and the twelve soft into one. Mike Martello will use the Pai An routines to convey the principles found within the 8 Hard (Ba Gang), and the 12 Soft (Shi Er Rou).

The Eight Hard refer to that of Dashing "Chong" / Colliding "Zhuang" / Collapsing "Beng" / Hitting "Da" / Clubbing "Gun" / Poking "Tiao" / Chopping "Pi" / Bending "Ga"

The Twelve Soft refers to that of Dodging "Shan" / Turning "Zhuan" / Soaring "Teng" / Moving "Nuo" / Touching "Zhan" / Sticking ”Nian" / Pressing "Tei” / Leaning "Kao" / Hooking "Gou" / Dragging "Lou" / Picking "Tsai" / Hanging "Gua"

Each of the above core principles are not independent from one to another, rather, it is in sequential oneness of the internal movements adapting to that of the opponent that enables the techniques to work (application that depends on spontaneous attack, NOT a known attack). One shall spend time appreciating the subtlety of each movement in forms and applications when practicing so as to grasp and to master the above core techniques. Practice with achievement is the way of practicing. Those who understand the way of practicing shall learn of the way of "Momentum". Those who understand the "momentum mechanism" shall be able to understand the spontaneous application of the above core principles inside out.
One shall learn to tell the intent from the opponent via contact. If the student is able to listen to the opponent's intent, one shall be able to tell the difference in between that of the Ying and that of the Yang.
The literal meaning of each word may be misleading. One has to feel it from the step by step guidance, exemplification and explanation, from the teacher, so as to understand what each core principle means in the context of martial arts (skill) and essence.

Mike Martello
Martello Laoshi has been actively involved in the martial arts all his life, starting at age 5 boxing with his father, and continuing through today learning from Wang Chieh Laoshi of Taiwan. Mike has taken the attitude of his teacher, and always approaches the arts as a student, constantly learning, analyzing, and playing with his technique and pushing his skill level constantly.
Drawing from Mantis (Seven Star / Eight Step / Plum Blossom / Six Harmonies), Baji, Chen & Yang Taiji, Yin Fu Bagua, as well as boxing, Shuai Chiao, and fencing, Mike’s seminars are an opportunity to meet one of the rare gems of the west. Join us for an opportunity to learn from someone who has literally traveled the world training with some of the best teachers that can be found!
