Our school will be there. I will try my hand at no-gi grappling as well as all the other kung fu forms. Aint nothing like a kung fu guy who can grapple.....or at least try!

Last years event had a very small turnout for the grappling competitions.

I'll be there.

The last two years they did have san shou. So my assumption will be yes.
I think they charge per event so I'll probably do just the San Shou. Hopefully they will bust out with some better mats this year. I've made the suggestion that they should do so. I also suggested a flat door free for competition.

While the year before had a good turnout, last years competetion was light across the board. I assume in part because the AAU was held the same month or near to. I think labor day weekend was around that time too.

Hopefully this year will see a better turn out.

Last year he did zero advertising or marketing. This year I believe he filed as a nonprofit. Hopefully there will be more competitors in the CMA this year. Seemed like grappling, TKD, and Karate drew a lot, San Shou a few. The registration form says $40.00 for two events, I am not sure if San Shou was or is any different. A friend told me at the AAU that San Shou now falls under the authority of the boxing commission which means that events/competitors/judges need to be sanctioned. Anyone heard anything on this?

This is my understanding, which is why I asked if they were actually having San Shou. I suspect they won't.

Sanshou in Texas is really up in the air.

For the AAU, the national organization disallows things that have potential head trauma. They are even moving away from boxing. So, for the AAU to do Sanshou and still be in good graces with the national governing body, the rules would have to be pretty restrictive.

Perhaps a partnering with a Sanshou body is in the future here.

Then, the new laws in Texas are fairly vague. Read them one way and you come away with "It's all OK" Read them another and it states that elimination formats are not allowed. This is the norm - fighter 1 fights 2, 3 fights 4, 5 fights 6, 7 fights 8, then the winners are paired..and so on. This fits the laws description of the disallowed elimination format....

What they want is for there to be one set of fights - fighters do one fight...then you have a later event with the next round.... maximum recovery time is the goal, I guess.

Taiji Legacy doesn't seem to have a problem with it. They had it last year, and unless things have changed since my last update, they going to have it again this year. I just wish they have an old fogey division.

Uh, Taiji Legacy cancelled in 2008, and I bet when they re-emerge in 2009 there will be changes to the San Shou format.

The laws changed tail end of last year or first part of this year. So, there has not been a Taiji Legacy that has had to deal with it. I doubt that it is even on Jimmy Wong's radar yet.

His competition does NOT have to deal with the AAU national organization rules....but he will have to deal with the Texas legal issues.

Granted, many people just ignore the issue. For example, the World Games in 1995 in Baltimore had Sanshou. Maryland has a fairly strong Boxing Commission. In reality, with head contact allowed, all fighters were supposed to have been licensed by the commission for Maryland. The promoter did a change in wording of the rules to make it sound like the head contact was not allowed (wink wink, nudge nudge) and I know that the guy who got the bronze medal left Baltimore with a concussion.

So...how the laws play out remains to be seen. Jimmy Wong's event may be the first one to have to navigate that mine field.

Well, really, most people when they think Kung Fu are not thinking of full contact fightting, sad but true, so you can get away with it for a while at least until the commissions get tipped off....

The NACMAF and later USA WKF san shou events were technically illegal...

If the issue is number of rounds in a day, it CAN be addressed, but most promoters will simply just not do it

Not sure on elbows. I know in sparring last night for it we were not using elbows. Sorry about that.

You have to pay to enter the tournament. No one is getting paid, so that the TDLR is not involved. So I guess it would be considered more of a smoker.

There should be at least 3 from South Austin Gym there for the San Shou.

Not sure how many are gonna do the gi and no-gi grappling/BJJ.

Ok, my opinion on this tournament was "what are they doing?" All of the adult forms divisions were all jacked up. Shaolin1 was in charge of all of the kung fu forms. From what I saw, he had everyone divided out in their perspective style, experience level, gender, and age. Then, Sensei Gary Lee who is one of the best kenpo karate instructors out there called everyone who is doing "kung fu kata" to come to the front. Sensei Lee used the color belt scheme and anyone who was 16 yrs old and up was considered an adult. Males and females competed against each other, and old guys like me competed with the young guns. The kids were divided by age group and that was it. One of our students went up against some jr black belts and she is only a beginner. She still got a bronze medal but come on. Then, weapons were all put together into one category. Staff, broadsword, double d's, 9 ring broadsword, were all lumped into one category. My wife lost the gold to someone who was doing broadsword when she was doing staff.

Then, I find out that there is no continuous sparring. So, all of the kung fu people who were doing continuous sparring were combined with karate point sparring. Man, what gives? Oh, well.

I thought this was supposed to be a kung fu tournament? They ran it like a karate tournament. If I wanted to compete in a karate tournament I would of gone to an AOK tournament. Anyways, we all still had fun and hopefully next year they can run the forms division like it is supposed to be.

Shaolin1, I thought you were doing a good job on the forms breakdown and they should of let you to continue to run it.

Thanks for the Kudos Masher but no way in hell would I want to be a chairman. Ya know I spent a lot of time organizing that list of competitors and trying to be fair with divisions and such. They gave me that list about 30 minutes prior to the competition and it just had everyones name, age, and experience level. At least they did have it broken down into categories of styles and weapons until Sensei Lee changed it all. I was still working on it when Sensei Lee called everyone up there so it kind of made me mad when he did what he did especially since he undid everything I had done.

For that tournament disorganization is nothing new. I will make some suggestions to the organizers for next years competition. Hopefully, it will run a little smoother. In the end though I think everyone had a good time. I have supported this tournament for the last three years now because I would like to see it blossom into something more. Austin really does not have a tournament for the CMA and I really like the blending of styles that takes place at this tournament. But one lesson that needs to be learned is that if people walk away from it saying WTF? they will not come back to the next one you have. I would send them my suggestions right now but I am literally walking out the door to go to Houston to train.

I did enjoy meeting you and your wife and San He Chuan as well even though he was got KO'd

That guy was a d!ck. I'm being honest.

He sat by his boat just bellowing out orders to people. He never once thanked anyone. He snapped at the kids who moved a little slow for his taste. And he kept plugging his boat and the upcoming boat show.

That guy is an instructor?!?! He was pushing 300 pounds!

Yeah, he is a little arrogant. His son is pretty much the same way. What can I say, like father, like son.

Hard to believe, but yes he is an instructor. I saw him compete in forms in the late 80's and early 90's when he used to compete against my old instructor. He can move for a big guy and well too.

I just wish he would get off of his ego trip and come back down to earth with all of us.
