IRC has been around forever, and the main program used to run it takes little to near no system resources, so you can minimize it and keep it up forever. That way someone could say something days later and as long as someone had not exited out, could see it and discuss it. I'm already on it 24/7 (well, the computer is) so I thought I'd mention it. All one would have to do is connect to an EFnet server, any one will work, and type in the name of the channel to join it. The program, mIRC is trialware, but can be used forever, most people on IRC are using the trial version and have been for years.
