I fight with paintbrushes.

Sometimes drumsticks.

When I feel like I've integrated the surrounding environment into the expression, then I feel like I can honestly say, "that was artful."

My art is only in the application - how I approach my training. The fighting, the nutrition, the weights, it's all science in foundation and art in motion.

I don't do kata to "express myself in combative form." I use them to develop a certain type of movement quality.

I don't spar to express the philosophical leanings of my ancestors, I spar to see where the holes in my training are.

The art is ONLY in the movement, the application, the doing. Otherwise, it's dancing.

Me, I like to lead the class stretching in a fantastic lime green thong and matching arm floaties while playing Chinese opera music...that's sans a Brazilian wax for full effect. If I'm feeling extra artsy I throw on a couple of tassels on my nipples. It tends to be less popular amongst the youth class.

It is art because it employs methods that deliver consistent results that are useful and functional.

It is science because the methods are reproducible.

I fight with paintbrushes.somewhat off topic, but you reminded me of a technique a guy told me on helping loosen up and strengthen the neck. imagine an invisible paintbrush coming up out of your crown, now paint an imaginary picture on the ceiling using only your neck and head. :)

Art is in the eye of the beholder.
To some a beautifully executed arm bar is art, to others a devastating KO and to some, only a perfectly executed form can be called art.
