View Full Version : Martial Arts Deaths

I seldom hear of deaths in the martial arts. I feel that martial arts are generally safe. I'm starting this thread just to test my theory. If I'm right, it'll lay fairly dormant.

Schoolboy dies in Siberia martial arts contest (http://en.rian.ru/sports/20081110/118228266.html)

KEMEROVO, November 10 (RIA Novosti) - A Russian schoolboy collapsed and died during a Daido Juku martial arts competition in the southwest Siberian city of Kemerovo, a spokesman for the regional administration said on Monday.

"Fifteen-year-old Artyom Korotkov of Novosibirsk lost consciousness during a fight. Unfortunately, the first aid provided was not sufficient to avert tragedy, and he died," the spokesman told RIA Novosti.

The cause of death has not yet been clarified.

A local police source said an investigation has been launched into the incident on the request of the regional governor, Aman Tuleyev.

Daido Juku, also known as Kudo, incorporates martial arts skills from Kyokushin karate, boxing and wrestling.

Last month, a 19-year old Russian hockey star died of heart failure during a match.

Alexei Cherepanov collapsed on the substitutes' bench after falling on the ice during a Continental Hockey League game in the Moscow Region town of Chekhov. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died later that evening.

Nicknamed the Siberian Express, Cherepanov had played two seasons as a professional, beating in March 2007 the Russia league goal-scoring record for rookies previously held by the legendary Pavel Bure.

He was expected to follow in Bure's footsteps and move to the National Hockey League, having been the New York Rangers' first-round pick in the 2007 NHL draft.

While I am a big advocate of contact fighting and "getting in there", I have two BIG caveats

1. I think competition of this sort should be for 18 and older ONLY (never have offered an under 18 san da match in my life)

2. All events should have qualified medical staff ON SITE

may be some health exam before fights.

the doctor may pick up some pre existing conditions or heart/lung etc

and say not fit for fighting

or fit for fighting

--

veterinarian would health exam the horses before they race

why not people before any fights?

Here is the thing with Kudo, it is very safe, cosmetically speaking.
The mask prevents blood, and damage to the face, but the concussion effect is still there, some may say more because some people tend to defend their head less when it is protected and others tend to hit harder when their opponent is protected.
Nevertheless, heart failure tends to have very little to do with the match in question.
It was probably congenital or due to excessive training.

I'm guessing this was a two-person wushu taolu accident. Can you imagine how Weerasinghe's partner feels.

IC defends wushu student’s death (http://www.nation.lk/2008/10/19/sports2.htm)
By Ravi Nagahawatte
The Sri Lanka Wushu Interim Committee has acknowledged the fact that the sport lost a promising player due to the death of Madura Weerasinghe at the trials to select the junior team to take part in the Asian Junior Wushu Championships in Indonesia.Interim Committee secretary Manel Dharmakeerthi quashed speculation which suggests that there were shortcomings in the manner in which the tournament was conducted.

Dharmakeerthi told The Nation that the tournament was conducted in accordance with the rules and regulations of wushu and that members of the Sports Ministry’s Medical Unit were present at the tournament. He said that the player was in the best of health throughout the tournament and he (the player) never gave the impression that he was weak.

“There is the element of danger in all sports. The element of risk in wushu is more because it is a martial art,” Dharmakeerhti said. According to Dharmakeerthi this is first death in a wushu national event both in Sri Lanka and in the world. The player who died of internal bleeding, Weerasinghe, was a student of Kaburawala Maha Vidyalaya, Matugama. Weerasinghe’s close associates, including his coach, are of the view that he was physically weak during the tournament. A past president of the Federation has charged that the death could have been avoided if the referee was more vigilant.

Dharmakeerthi however said that the player had signed and produced the participant’s certificate in which he had all the requirements to make himself eligible to take part in the tournament.

Magisterial inquiry over “Wushu” death (http://www.lankapuvath.lk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3944&Itemid=108)

(Colombo Lankapuvath November 08) Colombo Additional Magistrate Kumari Abeyratne yesterday (07) called for a comprehensive report on sports equipment and tools which were in use at the Inter school Wushu competition in which Madura Weerasinghe a young student of Kamburawala Maha Vidyalaya, Baduraliya took part.

The additional magistrate made this order at the magisterial inquiry into the death of Madura Weerasinghe during the competition at the Sports Ministry Indoor stadium.

The death was due to extensive haemorrhage following an accidental blow by a blunt tool declared the Additional Magistrate.

It was pointed out by the magistrate that such tragic incidents occur during sports competitions and announced that she was convinced that there has been no personal grudge between the two competitors.

some kind of safe guard should have been in place

such as a head gear or protector chest, so that any "weapons" that are wielding or flying would not seriously hit us and kill us.

it is indeed a sad situation.

safety has to be on our mind at all times.

I almost got knocked out during a 3-person waxwood staff set during a show one time. We were under a very low tent and when I raised my staff to block, it got caught on the top of the tent and I took a straight shot to the top of my head. Everything went white for a second, but I recovered and finished the set. I had a big lump and it broke the skin, though.

Well, I think this settles the age-old debate - Wushu is the world's most deadly martial art.

GeneChing
11-20-2008, 10:18 AM
And I'm also sure that anyone who has worked a two-person form has delivered and and received injuries too. High-level wushu, even with its ultralight weapons, can be dangerous for sure. The whole point of sparring sets is to come as close as possible, so any slight error can be disastrous. Our copy editor, Lori White, once came with in an inch of losing her eye while practicing a spear vs. 3-section sparring set. However I must disagree with SPJ - safety gear for sparring sets is absurd. If you wear safety gear, you might as well just spar with padded weapons (http://www.martialartsmart.net/Self_Defense_Weapons.html). Now, there's nothing wrong with that. In fact, I think every one who practices weapons seriously should dabble in padded weapons. But it's a totally different beast than weapon sparring forms.

It sounds like a freak accident. I can't remember hearing of anything quite like this before. I'm monitoring the news for more info, but not anticipating much. Even with the net, Sri Lanka news isn't the most accessible.

SPJ

agreed that safe weapon made out of foam or rubber etc would be better.

1. even with all the protective stuff, people may still get injury in kendo or fencing.

2. in a sparring set, well if a soldier is wielding a guan dao or broad sword, he would wear some kind of army uniform with protective guards.

I guess that people are so used to the idea that silk cloths is the only thing to wear in doing wushu both open hand and weapon drills/routine.

:D

GeneChing
11-20-2008, 03:50 PM
I don't advocate making padded weapons or protective gear for two-person weapon forms. Quite the opposite. While I certainly feel that what happened to Weerasinghe is tragic, enforcing safety measures on forms isn't the solution. That emasculates forms practice even more. After all, this is martial arts. If it was totally safe, it wouldn't be genuine. User assumes all risks.

I think Weerasinghe's death was a freak accident. If you enacted safety standards for every freak accident, we wouldn't be able to do anything.

Teacher dies at karate grading (http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/4786631a11.html)
The Press | Tuesday, 09 December 2008

A Rangiora school teacher and long-time martial arts instructor collapsed and died during a karate grading at the weekend.

Rangiora Karate Club sensei Rob Stewart, 53, was in the Waikuku Community Hall on Sunday morning when he started having trouble breathing, senior black belt Graham Russell said.

The grading involved more than 30 people, mostly children, from five Canterbury clubs.

CPR was performed on Stewart "within seconds" by several people, and resuscitation attempts continued until emergency services arrived, he said.

Police confirmed a man died at the scene and the matter had been referred to the coroner.

Stewart was a fourth-dan black belt in the Okinawan Goju-Ryu karate style, who trained for more than 25 years in Hamilton, Rotorua, Oxford and Rangiora.

He had been a teacher at Rangiora Borough School since 1995, and had taught many of his karate students.

"He's dedicated his life over the last 30 years or so to karate," Russell said. Stewart's wife, Diana, and their four children were still coming to grips with the death, he said.

Rangiora Borough School principal Alan Sutton said Stewart was a highly regarded teacher and colleague.

We have Soldiers die from heart failure at least a couple times a year. Usually it's either the new recruits unable to adapt to the rigors of basic, or it is an older reservist who was activated and was attempting to work out while deployed, without properly acclimating.

Both the deaths here almsot certainly have nothing to do with MA, just a question of timing. The first was probably due to a cardiac sudden death syndrome which may even have been undetectable without specific specialist tests. The second was probably due to ischaemic heart disease ( a leading cause of death in 50something males).

Arrests bring little solace in killing of Orlando martial-arts teacher (http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/orl-loc-homicide-030809,0,5767167.story)
Slain granddad had just reunited with family

Ruphine Powell was slain Feb. 11 on Mercy Drive. He had recently reunited with his daughters. (Powell family / March 8, 2009)

Katrina Ervin knew why the detective was knocking at her door Feb. 12. Her father, who always called on his way home in the evening, hadn't come home -- and it was 6 a.m.

"I was just hoping they'd say he was hurt instead of dead," Ervin, 25, said.

Her father, Ruphine Powell, had been shot to death on Mercy Drive, the victim of an apparent robbery attempt, Orlando police said. He had been shot inside his beloved blue 1990 Ford Mustang, driven a short distance before crashing into a wooded area.

Saturday evening, Terrence Leath, 17, and Jonathan Loyd, 18, were arrested on charges of armed robbery with a firearm and first-degree murder in connection with Powell's death. The two men were taken to Orange County Jail, and additional arrests were "imminent," said Sgt. Barbara Jones of the Orlando Police Department.

For Ervin, the arrests were a mercifully quick break in the case of her father's slaying -- a killing that cut short a long-awaited family reunion.

For months, Powell, 52, had worked two jobs to save money to help his daughters move to Orlando from Connecticut. On Jan. 23, Ervin and her sister, Tammy Jordan, arrived in Orlando.

Ervin brought her two children, ages 4 and 5, with her. For the first time, Powell met his grandchildren. There was an immediate bond.

"My dad's not the young, exuberant guy he was years ago, but he rode around on this floor, and picked up these kids, and ran around with them like it was nothing," Ervin said from her Orlando home. "Really, I feel like he wanted to make up for lost time."

Ervin is one of several people who remembered Powell as a calm, athletic man who loved teaching kung fu and working on his Mustang.

But he didn't have much time for those hobbies, working days and nights as a tool-and-die machinist for two local companies.

At his night job, Powell was a hard worker who never lost his temper, said Gene Augustin, who employed him for seven years.

On the night Powell was shot, he left the factory between 9 and 9:30 p.m., according to security-camera footage. His body was discovered near Mercy Drive and West New Hampshire Street about 11:35 p.m. He was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Augustin said he thought Powell, who was found in the driver's seat, was trying to make it back to the company's factory after being shot. "He missed the street [the turn to reach the factory] by about 50 feet," swerving into nearby woods instead, Augustin said.

Powell's death came as a shock to his employers, family and friends. They said he had no enemies, no criminal background.

He joined the Marines at age 17 and served for seven or eight years, Ervin said.

Powell brought the discipline he learned in the military to his role as a teacher of kung fu at a local studio, World Ving Tsun Athletic Association in Orlando. From 2003 to 2007, he volunteered several nights a week, mentoring students in the art of ving tsun, a type of kung fu popularized by Bruce Lee. Powell was a first-degree black sash and left the studio only because of health reasons, studio owner Darrell Jordan said.

"He gave of himself wholeheartedly," Jordan said of Powell's efforts. "He pulled himself up by his bootstraps."

Scott Haynes, one of Powell's former students, said he inspired him to hone his skills. They soon became close friends.

"If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have trained as hard," said Haynes, 37, at the studio.

Originally from Connecticut, Powell moved to Orlando about 20 years ago, then attended technical school and began working as a machinist.

By the time of his death, he had achieved one of his major goals: being reunited with his family. He had left Ervin's mother when Ervin was just 3 or 4 years old, moving in and out of their lives over the years.

His daughters' move to Orlando seemed to mark a new chapter in their lives.

"That's what upset me the most," Ervin said. "He just met my kids. I didn't get enough time."

The arrests have soothed some of her grief, Ervin said.

"I didn't want my father's death to go unsolved," she said. "I just want to know [what happened], and I'm hoping they are convicted."

They were dull (but metal) swords- otherwise I probably *would* have lost the finger in that particular case. Of course, a duller blade can sometimes be even more dangerous than a sharp one.

For the rest of that class, I went to the back and stood behind *him*. His shoulders were very very tense. <wicked grin>. Unfortunately, he felt so geniunely bad about it that I didn't really have the heart to torture him any further.

True Story,
At my old TKD dojang we had a guy we called "ninja bob", he liked to pretend he was a Ninja.
One day I come in and he is with one of the junior belts (red belt) and he is teaching him how to use a sword.
Ninja Bob had a real Ninja-To and the kid had a wooden ninja-to.
The go up and down the floor with Ninja Bob slicing at the kid with the real sword and the kid "parrying" with the wooden sword.
Well, I tell them to stop it because only idiots play games with real swords.
Ninja Bob says, true ninjas play no games.
Ninja Bob then proceeds to slice Junior Red Belts finger to the bone.
I take the kid in the first aid room and handle it, he only got 8 stiches.
The next day Ninja Bob comes in ( he left whiel I was helping the kid) and the Head Instructor goes up to him and punches him staight in the face, knocking him down the stairs into the landing at the base of the steps.
3 of the students are coming in as this happens, the look down, see Ninja Bob, wall over him and come up stairs.
I checked on Ninja Bob after I finished teaching one of the classes, about 2 hours after the incident, No Ninja Bob.
Never saw him again, or maybe I did and he was just real well camouflaged.

Enumerating martial injuries:

I broke a finger sparring with boken.

I tore the tendon that connected my left arm to my left pectoral after an opponent in a JJ match spun in my guard and elbowed me on his way down.

I sprained both of my ankles at least once each.

I lost a tooth in a boxing match.

I've been punched in the throat hard enough to make me sick twice and I have a variety of skin scars, mostly on my hands.

Oh... and my nose is very slightly crooked so I probably broke it at some point but I don't really remember tha one.

"C'mon, what are the chances that you'll get whacked on the exact same spot?"
(never, never say this.)
On the very FIRST exchange-WHACK! Right on the same exact knuckle. It split wide open and bled like a stuck pig. I'm holding it trying to stop the bleeding muttering,"what are the chances? yeah, right. Farkin bastid!"

You'd be amazed how often stuff like that happens by accident with stick drills. Your grip can have an impact on which part of your hand is most likely to get hit... as can your opponent's height, your height, stance, etc.

So it's actually very likely that if you get hit in a place once that's the place you will get hit again.

That's how I broke the finger. :D

It was my brother holding the offending boken.

This one isn't a death due to martial arts per se. But still, getting slashed with a sickle in a karaoke club strikes me as so very Jakarta.

Former martial arts athlete killed in club brawl (http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2010/01/06/former-martial-arts-athlete-killed-club-brawl.html-0)

Desy Nurhayati , The Jakarta Post , Denpasar | Wed, 01/06/2010 2:40 PM | The Archipelago

Former national martial arts athlete I Gede Arya Heru Wibawa was killed during a brawl at a karaoke parlor in Sesetan, Denpasar, late Sunday.

Arya, 40, was slashed with a sickle while trying to break up a fight between patrons at the Mirama Lounge.

He died at around 11 p.m. on his way to the nearby Sanglah General Hospital.

Denpasar Police chief Sr. Comr. Gede Alit Widana said Monday two suspects believed to have been responsible for his death had turned themselves in to South Denpasar Police shortly after the incident.

The suspects have been identified as 40-year-old I Wayan Darta and his 21-year-old son, I Made Suastika, residents of Tanjung Bungkak in East Denpasar.

Widana said the incident began when the two suspects arrived at the parlor at around 10 p.m. and ordered 10 bottles of beer. Moments later, Suastika began fighting with another customer.

"The victim tried to break up the fight, but to no avail," Widana said.

"They continued fighting in front of the parlor."

In the middle of the brawl, Suastika fell close to where Arya was standing.

"Seeing his son get knocked down, Darta got mad and pulled out a sickle he'd been carrying with him, and slashed Arya right across the abdomen."

Suastika, carrying a machete, also struck out at Arya, hitting him in the arm and chest until the victim was knocked down.

"The victim died from massive blood loss after arteries below his collarbone were severed," Widana said.

He pointed out the victim and the two suspects were not mutually acquainted.

"They only happened to be at the same karaoke parlor that night. This was a murder committed in the heat of the moment," he said.

He added that the suspects could face up to 15 years in prison if found guilty under the Criminal Code.

Arya, a resident of Banjar Kaja in Sesetan, was a gold medalist in the 1996 and 2000 National Games (PON).

His sister, Ni Made Arya Dwi Damayanti, said he worked as a trainer for athletes in the provincial martial arts squad.

Arya also trained several national-level athletes for the 2008 PON in Samarinda, East Kalimantan.

This one isn't a death due to martial arts per se. But still, getting slashed with a sickle in a karaoke club strikes me as so very Jakarta.

I had a WTF momment reading this

"Seeing his son get knocked down, Darta got mad and pulled out a sickle he'd been carrying with him, and slashed Arya right across the abdomen."

Suastika, carrying a machete, also struck out at Arya, hitting him in the arm and chest until the victim was knocked down.

Having never been to Jakarta myself, I wasn't sure how common it was for people to be packing sickles and machetes when they head to the bar. But, definately something you don't expect to see living in the US.

many years back I kind of knocked myself out playing with a chain whip. Few times got hit with a 3 section staff at the back of the head.

who said wushu weapons are not dangerious?!

The Steel whip! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juvg5NrtoCk) The only weapon I ever injured myself with more than twice, I usually learn the first time. The move at 1:18 I missed the catch & around the neck & right into the mouth, teeth, ouch!

funny side thing about that ( we kind of do a combo of kicking and slapping, i learned my wushu from Tran Sifu here (http://www.ckfa-wushu.com/sifu.htm) it says hes been openly teaching for 15 years...its said that for about 10 years or more lol ) the reason i started tucking my kwan/feiyu laces into the sides is from lodging one of those little plastic lace enders into my hand.

sports physiology and medicine.

wushu or kung fu is much related to chinese medicine since long time ago.

it would be nice to have

wushu or kung fu physiology and medicine

other than qi theory and qi gong

there are many researches going on with qi and qi gong

maybe the western science and medicine need to look at wushu or kung fu, too.

Man slain at drive-in; another killed as officer responds (http://www.ajc.com/news/dekalb/man-slain-at-drive-1437705.html)
By Alexis Stevens
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Two men, just one year apart in age, probably didn't know each other. But both likely died within minutes of one another following a quick string of events in DeKalb County.

Mitt Lenix, a martial arts expert and entertainer, jumps through a ring of fire at the Georgia Renaissance Festival. He was shot and killed at the historic Starlight Six Drive-In after apparently having car trouble and asking for help.
Special, Chip Talbert Photography Mitt Lenix, a martial arts expert and entertainer, jumps through a ring of fire at the Georgia Renaissance Festival. He was shot and killed at the historic Starlight Six Drive-In after apparently having car trouble and asking for help.

After a martial arts expert and entertainer was shot and killed at the historic Starlight Six Drive-In, a man headed to babysit for a family member was hit and killed by a DeKalb County police officer headed to the homicide scene early Tuesday, police said.

Tuesday afternoon, officers were still searching for the man accused of killing a man that police believe was only asking for help. But it wasn't clear what prompted the alleged gunman to shoot at the area's last remaining drive-in.

Mitt Lenix, 28, was at the Starlight, a metro Atlanta landmark on Moreland Avenue, when he apparently was having car trouble and approached 32-year-old Quentric S. Williams for help, Mekka Parish, spokeswoman for DeKalb County police, told the AJC.

Williams shot Lenix and then drove off, Parish said.

An off-duty DeKalb officer working at the drive-in heard the shots and rendered aid to Lenix, who later died after being transported to a hospital, Parish said.

A concerned citizen called 911 after the shooting and followed the suspect's vehicle until officers caught up Williams, chasing him nearly to the DeKalb-Gwinnett line on Lilburn-Stone Mountain Road.

The chase ended when Williams wrecked the car, but he jumped out of the vehicle, ran and eluded officers, Parish said. Gwinnett officers assisted in the search for the suspect. A female passenger with Williams was detained, but later released from police custody, Parish said Tuesday afternoon.

Police did not say how they identified Williams as the alleged shooter.

Meanwhile, DeKalb Officer Jason Copper was headed to assist fellow officers with the chase when he struck a pedestrian trying to cross Memorial Drive, police said.

Clinton Hightower, 27, who police said was not in the crosswalk when he was hit, died at the scene. Hightower's parents told Channel 2 Action News they've heard from witnesses who say the police car's blue lights were not activated and he was speeding at the time he struck their son.

"The investigation into this accident is ongoing," Parish said in a statement to the AJC. "Detectives are looking into when the officer’s lights were activated and if the siren was on as well as it will determine how fast he was traveling."

Hightower was headed to his sister's home to babysit when he was struck, according to his parents, Michael and Anna Maria Davis.

"We definitely need to know something, why it happened, why his lights weren't on, why 80 miles an hour," Michael Davis said. "And why you took my son's life. That's what he took."

Friends of Lenix called the martial arts expert an extraordinary performer who was using his talents to entertain others at the Georgia Renaissance Festival.

"He's just one of the most incredibly talented performers we've ever had at the festival, and he's going to be so missed," Sarah Petermann, spokeswoman for the festival, told the AJC by phone Tuesday afternoon. "For us, it was like losing one of our own."

At the festival, Lenix performed as part of duo that did stunts, such as one that required Lenix to jump nine feet in the air and kick a balloon to pop it, Petermann said.

"He was someone who had the technique to protect himself, but he didn’t use it that way," Petermann said. "He used it for entertaining."

Lenix was also a member of the Georgia National Guard, his family told Channel 2.

While friends and family members grieved the loss of the two victims Tuesday, others were shocked to learn that the Atlanta drive-in, which first opened in 1949, was the scene of a deadly crime.

Native Atlantan Suellen Germani, 46, told the AJC she's part of a group of movie-lovers called the "Drive Invaders" that heads to the Starlight every Wednesday night from April to September. Group members vote on which movies to watch, then arrive early with lawn chairs and boom boxes to get front-row seats, Germani said.

“It's sad, but I really view this as a random act of senseless violence," Germani said. "I’ve been coming out there for 15 years now and have never felt threatened or unsafe. When we come out there, it’s part of living in Atlanta that you have to be observant of your surroundings."

Germani said she was part of the group, years ago, that suggested the idea for the Drive Invasion, a popular music festival held Labor Weekend at the Starlight. In recent years, new generations have enjoyed the drive-in experience, with some movie-goers bringing along young children along for a family outing, Germani said.

On its Facebook page, the drive-in posted a statement about the shooting, thanking emergency responders and patrons who stepped in to help.

"We are saddened by last night's inconceivable events. Our hearts and prayers go out to those who are affected by this person's random, rare and grotesque actions," the statement said. "Let's show the world this is not what Atlanta is about."

Germani said the killing will not keep her group from returning to the drive-in. "I'm certainly going there tomorrow. We're not going to stop."

I seldom hear of deaths in the martial arts. I feel that martial arts are generally safe. I'm starting this thread just to test my theory. If I'm right, it'll lay fairly dormant.

GeneChing , it ' s too baf that these people all died doing what they love to do ,
wheather if it ' s sports or martial arts in general . But , when you first sign up for these activities wheater if it ' s for any kind of sports in general or martial arts of any type in general , don ' t they say check with your doctor first or have the doctor sign an approval for you to participate in these activities ?

And just incase something really did go wrong , the organizers or sponsors of these activities , they ' re suppose to have a team of certified or license physicians , and ambulance with certified peramedics and Emergency medical technicians , to prevent anything from happening to any participants . I would think that the sponsors or organizers of these events would protect themselves from any lawsuits that might take place .

That way the partipants would know if they really should think twice before participating in these activities . If you go to the doctor for check up , then you have an idea if your really that healthy or not . If you don ' t go to the doctor , then how would you really know if you ' re healthy or not ? Or just a walking time waiting to drop dead or not ? I personally myself go to the doctor every 6 months for regular check up so far I got cholestoral , I ' m on lipitor for cholestroal , and I also have to watch my glucose too . Other than that I try to walk everyday and weight train to help burn the fat and calories in my body .

I do admit though that there ' re junk and good doctors , so if you think that the doctor you have now is junk or no t so good , then do your own research and change doctors .

...and there are ways to get around that too. Most martial arts events only contract an EMT or Paramedic to be on site.

But back to Lenix, the alleged shooter has been caught.

Alleged Starlight drive-in shooter caught (http://www.ajc.com/news/dekalb/alleged-starlight-drive-in-1438797.html)
By Alexis Stevens
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

With the alleged shooter in custody, friends of the man shot to death at the Starlight Six Drive-In were still struggling to make sense of the tragedy. And one lingering question remained unanswered.

Why?

“The only person that can answer that question can’t answer that question," Valerie Hammond with the Georgia Renaissance Festival told the AJC.

That person is 28-year-old Mitt Lenix, a martial arts expert and entertainer who died early Tuesday after being shot at the historic Moreland Avenue drive-in DeKalb County. For nearly two days, his alleged killer eluded capture before deputies zeroed in on him Wednesday afternoon.

The arrest comforted the Lenix family.

"It was a feeling of elation, a feeling of release," Mitt's father, William Lenix, told Channel 2 Action News.

After attempting to jump out of a third-story window, Quentric Shaymon Williams, 32, was arrested at the Sun Suites hotel at Steve Reynolds Boulevard and Club Drive near Duluth, according to the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office.

Williams, of Snellville, allegedly shot Lenix and left the drive-in.

"He did try to jump out of a third-floor window, but our deputies were able to grab him and keep him from escaping," said Sgt. Adrion Bell with the DeKalb Sheriff's Office. "And at that point, there was no further resistance."

Lenix was known by many for jumps of his own, according to friends. He holds a world record for jumping 9 feet 4 inches in the air and kicking and breaking a board, according to his biography on the website for his family's martial arts school.

Several years ago, Lenix turned his martial arts expertise into entertainment, partnering with friend Judah Andrews to create a popular act for the Georgia Renaissance Festival, according to Hammond, the festival's entertainment director.

But beyond his athletic skill, Lenix was known for his friendly personality and extreme dedication, Hammond said. Last season, even a knee brace from an injury sustained on stage couldn't keep Lenix from performing, she said.

"It's just so senseless," Hammond said. "He was the kindest, most dynamic person I have ever met."

Lenix, who friends said was on a date Monday night at the drive-in, couldn't get his Ford Escape to start and approached Williams for help, police said.

But Williams allegedly shot Lenix in the chest, got into his truck and left the drive-in, leaving Lenix lying on the ground, according to the incident report obtained by the AJC.

"We don't know a motive yet," Bell said.

As one witness tried to administer aid to Lenix, another followed Williams' Ford F150 until officers arrived, according to police. The chase ended when Williams crashed his truck near the Gwinnett-DeKalb county line and ran.

A female passenger in the truck was taken into custody and then released without being charged. Williams eluded capture until Wednesday afternoon.

Lenix, also a student at Georgia State University, died after being transported to Grady Memorial Hospital.

Adding to the tragic string of events, while heading to assist fellow officers chasing Williams, DeKalb police Officer Jason Cooper struck and killed a pedestrian on Memorial Drive. Clinton Hightower, 27, who police said was not in the crosswalk when he was hit, died at the scene.

Wednesday afternoon, investigators found a weapon in Williams' third-floor hotel room, but it was not immediately known if it was used in the alleged killing, Bell said.

Williams, whose criminal history includes two previous stays in state prison following drug convictions, was shirtless as he was put into a patrol car in the hotel parking lot. He was booked into the DeKalb County jail Wednesday evening and charged with homicide.

Meanwhile, fans of the drive-in that opened in 1949 vowed to continuing their traditions of seeing movies under the stars. Suellen Germani told the AJC her group, called the Drive Invaders, would take their usual front-row seats to watch "Dark Shadows" Wednesday night.

Drive-in leaders created a memorial fund to benefit the Lenix family and promote martial arts education. Those wanting to donate to the fund can visit http://www.gofundme.com/Mitt-Lenix-Fund.

Lenix's funeral will be Monday at 7 p.m. at Salem Baptist Church in McDonough, Channel 2 reported.

When it's your time it's your time... I can only find comfort in that traditional teaching East and West says there is more than this world. What comes around goes around and we'll be treated as we treat others. We are all eventually going to find out at any rate!

Most martial arts students know and should certainly be told by their instructors repeatedly that despite the best precautions if you want to learn real kung fu unpredictable stuff happens and sooner or later they will get hurt. A good student takes injury as a lesson and will do their ****edest not to do the same thing again.

Most people will refer to practice or some sort of compitition where people get killed or whatever, but I suspect that death occurs all the time due to some form of Martial Art, and in particular a CMA. Whether it is deliberate or an accident does not matter. I personally know of 2 deaths that can be attributed to a martial art, and I know of at least 3 others that were also due to a martial art. CMA to be exact.
I would also suggest that if you can injure or otherwise hurt yourself with your own weapon, you need to get shed of it and find some other form of defense. Even if it is just for show, compitition, or whatever, it is still not something you need to be doing if it can hurt you. Any system that can injure you just as well as it can an opponent is not a system I would consider.

Martial arts champ's tragic gym death (http://www.westlothiancourier.co.uk/2012/11/15/martial-arts-champ-s-tragic-gym-death-62405-32235410/)
Nov 15 2012 by Alistair Watson, West Lothian Courier
http://images.icnetwork.co.uk/upl/wlothiancourier/nov2012/3/2/timoney-452109812.JPG

Competitors at a taekwondo grading event in Livingston were left shocked and devastated when a fellow participant died in front of them.

Popular Patrick ‘Paddy’ Timoney (42), described as a “one in a million man”, collapsed in front of his wife, family and friends on Sunday morning during a grading session at the Gmac Martial Arts gym in the Craigwillow Centre, Craigshill.

The father-of-three, who was a national taekwondo champion, died despite valiant attempts to revive him by other taekwondo experts taking part in the event.

Several of them took it in turns to perform CPR until paramedics arrived at the scene. He was taken to St John’s Hospital in Livingston but medics were unable to revive him and he was pronounced dead.

He leaves behind three children, Aiden, 14, Erin, nine, and four-month-old Cody.

Mr Timoney was looking to gain his fifth degree black belt during the grading session in front of a taekwondo grand master. He coached the national team and had fought in the 1998 world championships and was the current Scottish, Northern and British champion in the discipline of “hand destruction”.

The family man’s 43-year-old wife Jackie, who has also participated in the taekwondo world championships, was part of the judging panel on Sunday and watched in horror as her husband suffered a seizure in front of her eyes.

Sunday’s tragedy unfolded just after 11am on Sunday morning at the gym operated by close friend John McIlvaney.

He said: “Paddy was sitting his fifth degree black belt and was on the floor performing a pattern when he took a massive seizure and collapsed. His wife was on the panel for the grading so she watched it all happen.

“Every black belt took a turn at performing CPR on Paddy, nobody said a word they just got on with it. By the time we phoned an ambulance and it arrived, we had been performing CPR for about half an hour.

“We had to rush his wife out of the hall because, understandably, she was hysterical. I’ll never forget the sound of her screams.

“I was trying to reassure her that he was alright, but she was saying ‘I can see it in your eyes that he’s not’. Her screams were the most horrendous sound ever, they’ll haunt me forever.

“We also had young kids in the hall and had to get them out quickly. It was a really dark day.”

Mr McIlvaney, who had known Mr Timoney for years, also paid to the “larger-than-life” character who always had a joke to tell.

He added: “The response from people has been overwhelming. It shows just how well-known and well-liked Paddy was. He was a larger-than-life character and the finest person I’ve ever met. He was so family-orientated.

“He was really well known within the taekwondo community, not for his flexibility or high kicks – he was known for his infectious sense of humour and warm personality. He was the funniest man I’ve ever known and the person I would want at my side going through tough times. It’s awful he won’t be here anymore.”

Mr Timoney, from Coatbridge, had enjoyed a high profile in the sport, and was a board member of the International Taekwondo Federation Scotland.

The thing they are finding out with hockey and football players is that more than a few of them suffer from and ultimately die from brain diseases brought on by repeated strikes to the head.

To put it simply, fighting is not a healthy thing at all on any level. You take risk and you pay for that risk.

For me, it's because I never liked knitting and have been fully aware of my own mortality for some time now. :p

Trained in martial arts, couple's KUNG-FU fighting turns FATAL (http://www.malaysia-chronicle.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=171892:trained-in-martial-arts-couples-kung-fu-fighting-turns-fatal&Itemid=4#axzz2h92FUvrq)

The couple were trained in Chinese martial arts, which they often used against each other whenever tempers flared.

Their last domestic scuffle took a tragic turn when the wife died.

Lee Show Fui, 34, was yesterday jailed for five years after pleading guilty to one count of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

He killed his China-born Singaporean wife, Madam Tang Shifang, 37, in their flat at Block 441B, Fernvale Road, in Sengkang on Aug 31, 2011.

Lee, who has been suffering from schizophrenia since 2007, lost his job as an administrative assistant for a nutrition company a week before the fatal incident.

But he did not tell his wife, said Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Eunice Ng.

When he overslept on Aug 31, Madam Tang, thinking he would be late for work, pulled his ear to wake him up and scolded him.

When Lee played a computer game instead, she slapped him on the right cheek, causing him to lose the game.

He retaliated by punching her in the abdomen and they started fighting.

http://news.asiaone.com/sites/default/files/styles/medium/public/original_images/Oct2013/20131008_gongfu_tnp_1.jpg?itok=44gmDvwJ

Lee left the flat at 9.14am, pretending to go to work. But he soon went back to confront Madam Tang for having "bullied him" earlier, said DPP Ng.

Another violent fight broke out and Madam Tang, a coffee shop assistant, was killed.

The post-mortem on Sept 1 revealed that she had suffered 62 injuries (see report below) and she died due to massive abdominal haemorrhage from traumatic injuries to her left kidney.

In mitigation, Lee's lawyer, Mr Singa Retnam, told Justice Woo Bih Li that Madam Tang had often bullied him.

Before sentencing Lee, Justice Woo said: "No one is entitled to think he can retaliate with violence just because (his) wife started an altercation."

Taekwondo teacher Miguel Angel Diaz, who had recently separated from his partner, was found dead in his gym along with son Juan Martin

Tragedy: Miguel Angel Diaz and his son Juan Martin

A martial arts instructor hanged himself after shooting dead his 10-year-old son.

Taekwondo specialist Miguel Angel Diaz was found dead alongside his son Juan Martin in the gym at their home by the boy's mum Elizabeth Lindt.

Ms Lindt, 30, had left 37-year-old Diaz in April after a series of rows.

She went to his house in the Argentinian town of Concordia after becoming concerned when Diaz, who was looking after their son for the day, failed to answer the phone.

After knocking at the door and getting no answer, she enlisted the help of a neighbour to force it open.

Neighbour Lisardo Castellanos said on local TV: "She was quite distressed and said she feared something dreadful had happened.

"So I helped her open the door and when we went inside it was like a scene from a horror film."

Inside the gym they found Diaz had hanged himself. He also had a gunshot wound to the head, and a suicide note stuck to his shirt.

Little Juan's body was found on the floor. He had been shot twice in the head and once in the back.

A police spokesman said they were treating the tragedy as a homicide and a suicide.

Diaz had been well-known in the community for running the local gym, where he provided self-defence training to security guards and policemen, including firearms training.

It does look that way. At first it seemed reminiscent of the Chris Benoit murder-suicide, but the 'suicide note stuck on the shirt' in this case sounds weird.

I mean, sure it is POSSIBLE that He put a rope around his neck himself and then shot himself so that he would be shot AND hanged but possible doesn't mean probable...

For the ease of discussion, let's confine it to tournament only. I am advocate of full-contact training and contest. Sure, I suppose no one wants to have death occurrence. But how do we balance safety and skill being tested, so as to decide who will be the winner. Off my head, I can think of the following requirements:

1) Health check of the athelete just before the tournament
2) Paramedic on site
3) Police officers on site
4) Rules to be carried out

To give an example of problem in rules, I saw on TV decades ago a demonstration of protective helmet for martial art tournament. It is much like those wear by astronaut, with half sphere shape transparent face guard. While it offers much protection to the athelete, but knock out or submission is very unlikely to happen then.

1. Accidents and injuries abounds in training and sparring sessions.

2. Saftey gears and rules/practice and common sense help.

But accidents happen.

3. Murder and suicide cases are beyond the MA training grounds/halls.

FBI and local police detective needed.

MA teachers or sen sei supervise students during training hours.

Life advisory after hours is a bit much and beyond call of duty.

A 28-year-old Australian boxer has died in a Sydney hospital after being knocked out in an IBF regional title fight.

Davey Browne Jnr was floored by a punch from Filipino Carlo Magali on Friday night during the bout at Ingleburn RSL.

The incident occurred in the twelfth and final round and, while Browne appeared to regain consciousness and was sat on a stool, he suddenly slid off and lapsed into unconsciousness.

The father of two from Sydney's south west was taken to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition. Browne did not regain consciousness and his family made the decision to turn of his life support.

John McDougall, the president of the Australian National Boxing Federation, said Browne had been injured in the sixth round of the fight but told the referee he wanted to continue. He was, Mr McDougall said, about to win.

The bout was scheduled to go for twelve, three-minute rounds.

The fighters completed the eleventh round, but 30 seconds into the final round Browne was knocked to the canvas.

"It's really easy in hindsight for people to cry that the fight should have been stopped and unfortunately the officials are in the position that they have to make a decision and they based it on their experience and that Davey himself said he was quite okay and wanted to continue," Mr McDougall said.

"Accidents happen in sport and boxing is a hard sport and at the same time it has been more than 30 years since the last death or serious injury has occurred in NSW."

Mr McDougall said Browne was at the top of his game and his death was a "tragic loss" that had shattered the boxing community.

"It was great to see him climb back in the ring and he appeared to be better than he ever was," Mr McDougall said.

"Big things were in line for him. This fight would have placed him in the lower half of the top 15 rankings in the world."

Browne was clearly looking forward to getting back in the ring, posting about the bout weeks in advance on his Facebook page.

"This will be my biggest test to date and a win should open some doors for some bigger fights," he wrote on August 5.

He came from a family of boxers including his father David and brother Tommy, who boxed on the undercard on Friday night and fought for the world title in 2005.

NSW Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres said the Combat Sports Authority, the government agency which supervises both professional and amateur combat sports, would cooperate with the police investigation.

"I have also written to the Combat Sports Authority asking it review this sanctioned event and the application of the Combat Sports Act," Mr Ayres said.

"My thoughts are with David's family and friends during this tragic time."

A post-mortem examination will be conducted.

Police from Macquarie Fields Local Area Command will prepare a report for the Coroner.

Earlier this month, the Australian Medical Association released a position statement calling on boxing to be banned from the Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games.

The association also recommended a ban on all forms of combat sport for people aged under 18 years.

"Head injuries are essentially invisible, and can evolve over time. Even what may appear to be minor head injuries can turn serious very quickly," Association president Professor Brian Owler said at the time.

Boxers and fans from Australia and around the world have expressed their sadness at the news of Browne's death.

Australian boxer Danny Green, a four time world champion, said he was "gutted" for Davey and his family.

"Davey was a great little fighter with a tonne of skill and heart," he said.

"Boxing is a very tough game and they didn't come tougher than Davey.

"Rest In Peace, champion."

Former world champion and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Darren Barker posted on social media: "RIP Davey Browne Jnr such sad news. You forget sometimes just how dangerous this sport really is. God bless the friends and family".

So tragic.

Hamilton man Stephen Wallace was found dead after a police launched an investigation into him.
FAIRFAX NZ

A Hamilton martial arts instructor who worked with young bullies has been found dead days after police launched an investigation into claims that he sexual abused young men.

Stephen John Wallace was a well known martial arts instructor at Incorporated Martial Arts club on Colombo St in Hamilton.

A police spokesman said Wallace was found dead at his home after the investigation was launched last week following complaints of sexual offending against young men.

"Police had not yet spoken with Mr Wallace as the investigation was still in its very early stages at the time of his death," police said in a written statement.

"The priority for police now is to identify victims of Mr Wallace's alleged offending who have not yet come forward.

"It is important that these individuals have the opportunity to speak to police so that they can be provided with all appropriate support."

A woman at Incorporated Martial Arts, who refused to be named, said the group had brought in Victim Support workers to speak to younger members of the club.

"The club are doing everything we can to support the members and the victims."

The woman said staff at the club did not know of the alleged offending and were still coming to grips with what had happened.

"We didn't know that there was an investigation until after he died. We are broken."

Chris Jones, executive pastor of Hamilton's Gateway Church, confirmed Wallace attended the church but said Wallace had no involvement in the youth section of the church.

Jones would not comment when asked if any of the victims were members of the church, saying a statement from the church would be made later this week.

Wallace's death has been referred to the Coroner.

In 2011, in a interview Wallace said he was running programmes to straighten out young bullies.

At the time he said 15 of approximately 100 children and teenagers who came to his Frankton martial arts gym were bullies who had harassed or assaulted other children.

He said that children who bullied others usually need boundaries, discipline and to learn respect for others - all of which are offered by sports such as kickboxing, judo, karate and mixed martial arts.

Wallace said teaching bullies martial arts didn't make them better at dishing out beatings - claiming a 100 per cent success rate with reforming bullies.

In many cases, the children "had incredibly brilliant parents", who had been searching for a solution to curb their children's violent behaviour and aggressive attitude.

He believed martial arts, which requires intense training, mental discipline and respect for oneself and others, offered that solution - what he termed "old-school values".

"What I have found, over the years, is the bullies have the lowest self-esteem," he said.

Bullies would be immersed "in the values we have at the school - wanting to achieve, wanting to be recognised".

Wallace said a violent 13-year-old, on the verge of being removed from his school, had been brought to Incorporated Martial Arts to try to modify the boy's behaviour.

"His temper had got out of control, " he said.

Wallace said stroppy or aggressive children quickly learned to respect him and other instructors, and that filtered back to parents.

"I get parents ringing me saying, hey, can you just get Jimmy to do his homework? They have a respect here."

IDF soldiers sent to guard the population of Jerusalem due to a spate of Palestinian terror attacks against Jews shot and killed a 28-year-old ba’al teshuva haredi man who yelled “I am Daesh [ISIS]!” in Hebrew and tried to take a rifle from one of the soldiers, Ynet reported.

The soldiers, who were guarding a bus stop, thought the man was a terrorist.

The man, who has not yet been named, reportedly made aliya from Dagestan and studied at the Dvar Yerushalyim yeshiva for ba’al teshuvas (people who were not born into Orthodoxy but who have decided as adults to become Orthodox) in Jerusalem's Har Nof neighborhood. He also reportedly served in the IDF's haredi combat brigade Netzah Yehuda, better known as Nahal Haredi.

"He was involved in martial arts in Dagestan,. After the yeshiva he joined the army and worked as a security guard before going back to the yeshiva. We saw him two days ago, he seemed a bit off, confused. He was involved in physical altercations in the past, and was hot headed,” a friend told Ynet.

According to police, this is what happened:

• The two soldiers wanted to get on a bus at the end of their shift.

• The haredi man asked the soldiers to show him their ID's, perhaps believing them to be terrorists.

• In return, the surprised soldiers asked the haredi man to identify himself.

• At that point, an altercation between the haredi man and the soldiers apparently began. The haredi man reportedly attacked the soldiers and tried to grab a rifle from one of them.

• Meanwhile, the bus driver saw what was happening and tried to help the soldiers control the haredi man. The driver tried to shoot the haredi man with a taser, but the attempt failed.

• The haredi man continued fighting with the soldiers and continued to try to steal one of their weapons.

• A nearby security guard saw what was happening and rushed over to help the soldiers. He then fired his gun at the haredi man and the soldiers immediately followed it with their own gunshots.

But witness statements, which are reportedly now being examined by the IDF's criminal investigation division (CID), show that a series of mistakes led to the man's death.

"An initial investigation found that the soldiers opened fire, and the details and circumstances are being examined,” the IDF’s spokeman reportedly said.

Officials are investigating the death of a Mississippi-based Marine following command-sponsored martial arts training in November.
Lance Cpl. Patrick A Woehle, 19, had been attending weather school at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi as part of his entry-level military training, said Lt. Matthew Rojo, a spokesman for Marine Corps Training Command. On Nov. 13, Woehle became unresponsive during Marine Corps Martial Arts Program Training. He was taken to Garden Park Medical Center in Gulfport, where he died Nov. 14, Rojo said.
Woehle's cause of death has yet to be determined, Rojo said. Naval Criminal Investigative Service and military command officials are investigating the death, he said, but no legal actions are currently pending.
Woehle was from Vader, Washington, and a graduate of nearby Castle Rock High School. He had received attention as a high school track and cross-country athlete. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on Oct. 20, 2014.
"The loss of Lance Cpl. Woehle is tragic," Maj. Cody Stewart, the commanding officer of Keesler's Marine Detachment, said in a statement. "We remain committed to Patrick, his family, and those in uniform who served with him. We will do all we can to keep faith with them during this difficult and trying time."
Woehle is the second Marine to die this year following physical training. Cpl. Alexis Aaron Alcaraz, 22, died in August after succumbing to heat stroke during a conditioning hike aboard Camp Lejeune, N.C.

A good thread even though it is an old one. We should be cautious not to over load people in MA training. Always do only what we can do for both students and instructors. The question is where do we draw the line? When the training for a student is not challenging enough? When is it not working hard enough?

In recent years in my area alone, there have been at least a few incidences of high school (or even younger) athletes collapsing and dying while training or playing in their sports. They had appeared to be healthy and in excellent condition. Later it was often revealed to be from undiagnosed, pre-existing heart conditions. I don't know if these events were as common when I was a kid, but I personally never heard of this happening back then. I'm wondering if this problem is becoming more common among many in this younger generation? Because these are no longer rare occurrences.

Perhaps the only thing MA instructors can do is, before someone joins their school, to require proof that they got a checkup from their doctor. I think that would hurt business, though. Otherwise, there's no way to tell what's too much or too little. Already, most traditional MA schools that I see nowadays seem to cater mostly to kids, a MUCH different situation from when I was a kid. I always had to train with adults, and it was hardcore compared to many schools these days. The few kids in class were pushed just as hard, and never had any health-related problems other than bruises or sometimes getting the wind knocked out of us. If someone thought it was too much, they always knew where the door was. Karate (and most MA) was seen as more of an adult activity. That would not be acceptable nowadays for kids taking kiddie karate classes or whatever MA, so much is already watered down when kids predominate, to protect them and to avoid lawsuits.

With otherwise healthy and fit-looking young adults, it may be even harder to determine, because the assumption is that if they're physically fit, they're healthy. Which is not always the case, because some underlying issues are like a ticking time bomb.

Greetings,

i agree with Jimbo about deaths in high school athletics being uncommon. Yet, I have read about deaths due to military style training for a very long time. Sometimes, it is called "sudden death". It is not widely reported. It still happens. Instead of looking at the autopsy, maybe they should be looking at the complete training program, including recovery and nutrition.

Taekwondo expert, 20, gunned down on his doorstep in east London in case of 'mistaken identity'
BARNEY DAVIS, MATT WATTS 6 hours ago

A young martial arts expert who was shot dead on the doorstep of an east London flat may have been the victim of mistaken identity, it was claimed today.

Jordan Bari, 20, was shot at “point blank range” as he answered the door to the property in Florida Street, Bethnal Green just after 8pm on Monday.

Mr Bari was a black-belt in taekwondo and had won a number of trophies and titles for the prestigious Gurumu Taekwondo Club in east London, whose members have represented Great Britain at the Olympics.

Neighbours described hearing a series of gunshots echoing around the communal hallway of the housing block.

Victim: Jordan Bari, 20, was shot at point blank range

Armed officers called to the scene found Mr Bari, a former pupil at Brampton Manor Academy in Newham, collapsed in a pool of blood in the stairwell. He was pronounced dead 45 minutes later.

Two men, age 29 and 21, were arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder but released later on police bail pending further inquiries.

Detectives were today trying to establish a motive for the killing of the popular and talented martial arts enthusiast.

One neighbour said the victim had been staying at the flat but did not live there.

Last night forensic officers were searching the flat and the courtyard outside for clues as well as examining a silver Vauxhall Zafira and blue saloon car parked in the drive.

Neighbour Jackie Boxall was watching television when she heard a “big bang”.

She told the Standard: “It sounded like someone had chucked something off the roof. There was loud banging on our door but I was too scared to open it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aL28b1k4Q4U

“I looked down from the balcony and saw we were surrounded by police. A neighbour told us there’d been a murder down there.”

Another resident Mahbub Hussain, 33, said: “There was blood all over the stairs. There’s normally someone shouting in our block but there was no arguing - just a bang.”

Mr Bari switched to taekwondo after excelling as a teenager at Tang Soo Do, a Korean martial art and trained at the London Blackbelt Academy in Newham.

His former coach said he was among the best young fighters in Britain, winning trophies and medals.

Kieran Mackey, who had trained the fighter from the age of seven to 17, said: “It’s absolutely tragic. He was a lovely lad and an exceptionally talented martial artist.

“He competed in tournaments all over Britain and won loads of titles.

“He was a nice, kind person he trained hard and got on with things. I can’t imagine him being caught up in anything bad. It’s a complete shock.”

His mother Lisa Bari, is the founder of the East Village Nursery in Newham and chair of her local residents’ association.

A cousin who answered the door at the home of relatives in Poplar said the family were struggling to come to terms with what happened, saying: “We can’t deal with this right now.”

Friends took to social media to pay their respects.

Recruitment consultant Reise Apaloo-James wrote: “It hurt me to hear this. I remember that joyful smile you always had, always positive, you’re in a better place now bro. God bless your soul.”

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Jones, from the Homicide and Major Crime Command, appealed for witnesses to come forward.

He said: “At this early stage we are still working to establish the reasons why this young man was killed. If you have any information that could help, please contact us.”

Witnesses are asked to call the incident room on 020 8345 3734 or ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Parents of late wushu athlete convinced son’s death an accident (https://news.abs-cbn.com/sports/10/23/18/parents-of-late-wushu-athlete-convinced-sons-death-an-accident)
ABS-CBN News

The parents of the late young wushu athlete Rastafari Daraliay said the Philippine Sports Commission and the Wushu Federation of the Philippines weren’t remiss with their duties in relation to the death of their son.

The 11-year-old died after a freak accident at Rizal Memorial Sports Complex wushu dormitory late last month. He stayed on and off at the dorm for the past three years as requested by his parents, Vincent and Hazel Daraliay.

“They responded pretty well. Commissioner Butch Ramirez came on the first day of the wake of Rasta. The Wushu Federation was at the hospital when they rushed him to the hospital,” said Vincent on ANC’s “Hardball.” Vincent, Hazel and their daughter Zion was at ANC’s studio in ABS-CBN compound to talk about Rastafari’s death.

Rastafari fell off the top bunk of a double decker bed. He reportedly went back to sleep after telling his teammates he was OK, but never woke up.

Vincent Daraliay said the PSC and the Wushu Federation of the Philippines probed the incident and were satisfied with the explanations.

“On our side we are convinced that it was an accident. For us it was nobody's fault,” Daraliay said.

READ: PSC, Wushu Federation to extend support to late athlete's family
“PSC has responded when we asked what took them so long to take him to the hospital, why they used a taxi instead of the ambulance, they had an explanation for everything. They shouldered a big part of the burial expenses.”

But Daraliay acknowledged the agency could have done a bit more to prevent such accidents.

“Probably if they were a little bit more strict and they cared a little bit more on the safety of the athletes, especially the junior athletes. But we're relatively OK with the explanation they provided,” Daraliay said.

Vicent said he wants the PSC to look after the welfare of his daughter, Zion, also a wushu athlete. He said she is one of the reasons why the family maintained peace with the PSC.

“We could have burned bridges with the PSC or the wushu federation when this happened by just blaming them, but the problem is we have a daughter who is also an athlete. We asked her if she still wants to do it, she still wants to be an athlete,” he said.

“So we just wanted PSC and wushu federation na lang to just help us and probably before we send her back to training to make sure the place is safe for them for the junior athletes. That's all we're asking. They still have a dream to fulfill.”

Daraliay said they are also working on putting up an advocacy group in the name of Rastafari.

“It's gonna be called ‘RASTA’. After my son's name, it stands for Rastafari Advocacy for the Safety of Today's Athletes,” he said. “Basically we want to do something on the safety of athletes especially young athletes like my daughter.”

1. I think competition of this sort should be for 18 and older ONLY (never have offered an under 18 san da match in my life)

2. All events should have qualified medical staff ON SITE

Well to start with, I agree with lkfmdc's tournament conditions. Free fight training or tournament should come close to real fight in order to test the athlete's skill. But to me, death is not an acceptable outcome. So the question is where do we draw the line. That means what is the acceptable format, rules, etc. ?

A teenage girl in Russia, who was a martial arts champion, was electrocuted to death when she dropped her phone in the bath. Irina Rybnikova, 15, had been using a cable to charge her device in the Siberian city of Bratsk when the tragic incident occurred last Saturday.

Her sister Tatiana, 25, told the newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda that she had become the godmother to her young daughter. She told the paper: “My child adored her and called her 'nanny.' And now she is not with us anymore. Our hearts are torn up. It is so quiet and feels empty at home without her.”

Rybnikov was a champion fighter in pankration, which is a version of no rules boxing that originated in ancient Greece. She had won the all-Russian championship two months ago and had been selected for her country's national team.

One of her friends said: “She was a great person, the best and the most loved. She always dreamed of success in sports. We wanted to go together with her to another city and study there. Everybody loved her. She was sociable, kind and beautiful."

Her sports federation issued a statement saying: “A tragic accident has taken the life of our champion, friend, and student Irina Rybnikova, 15. She was a candidate for Master of Sports in pankration, our beloved girl. Rest in peace.”

Yury Agrafonov, the head of the radio-electronic department of Irkutsk State University, said: “Water is a good conductor for a current, this is why there was a short circuit when the phone fell into the water. If the phone had not been plugged in to 220 volts, the tragedy would not have happened.”

Last week, a 16-year-old boy in Malaysia was electrocuted while charging his mobile phone at his home. The victim, identified as Mohd Aidi Azzhar Zahrin, was found dead by his mother. He was wearing the headphones while the handphone was charging, the New Strait Times reported.

A world muay thai champion was found hanged in her room at a boarding house near her university in Ratchaburi’s Mueang district yesterday morning, police said on Tuesday.

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/img/photos/2018/December/18/0a1f5887e9f71322c6893d63977f01b0.jpeg

Police were alerted after Nitiyaporn Srisalai, 22, was found hanging from a nylon rope attached to the door frame at the back of the room, in Moo 5 village in Tambon Don Tako. Police did not find any trace of foul play, but there was a half-finished bottle of whisky in the room.
Nitiyaporn was a fourth-year student at Rajabhat University, Moo Ban Jom Bueng, majoring in muay thai. She was well-known through her muay thai alias as Hong Khao of Rajabhat Moo Ban Jom Bueng. She first became a World Muay Thai Organisation champion in the 51-kilogram category, before going on to winning the title in the 52kg category. Nitiyaporn’s friends told police that they had been drinking with her at 8pm on Sunday night, before returning to their rooms. One of the friends called on her the following morning, but she did not answer persistent knocks on the door. They asked the owner of the boarding house to open the door with a spare key, only to find the body.

Young girl sent to kung fu school to lose weight drops dead 48 hours later (https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/young-girl-sent-kung-fu-14323288)
Deng Qi's father believes she was bullied to death - something the famous Shaolin Xiaolong Kung Fu School strenuously denies
By John Feng Amber Hicks

A young girl sent to a kung fu school to lose weight dropped dead less than 48 hours after arriving.

Six-year-old Deng Qi's dad waved goodbye to his "happy" daughter as she embarked on her first day at the school.

But less than two days later he received a call saying she had collapsed and been pronounced dead after failing to respond to treatment.

The youngster's family allege she was bullied to death at the famous Shaolin Xiaolong Kung Fu School, which she enrolled at on April 7.

Her father said she had been "healthy and happy" when he dropped her off on her first day.

"The next we saw our daughter was at 7 or 8pm [on 9th April] in the mortuary," he sobbed.

He added: "Her face was purple and there was bruising on her stomach from having been kicked."

CCTV footage he obtained from the school allegedly shows Deng Qi being surrounded by several uniformed pupils, who her father claims punched and kicked her.

He said: "The camera was very far away from our daughter, but it looks like someone pushes her over and then kicks and punches her."

The video shows several of the pupils later carrying Deng Qi down a grandstand to the school nurse.

The martial arts school has strongly denied the allegations of bullying leading to Deng Qi's death.

They have confirmed that the Dengfeng Public Security Bureau is currently investigating the case but released their own statement, threatening media outlets running the Deng family's opinions on the pupils tragic death.

The statement - issued by their director, surnamed Chen, on 14th April - claims Deng Qi "collapsed while playing", calling all other theories "libellous rumours".

It revealed that the schoolgirl was sent to the kung fu school for exercise because she weighed over 50 kilogrammes (110 lb / 7st 8 ) and had trouble walking as a result.

The school said there was "no evidence" to suggest Deng Qi had been beaten to death, and that she had not had any physical altercations with any of her classmates.

The institution added finally that it "reserved the right to take legal action" against media outlets which suggest otherwise and continue to cause "great loss to the school's reputation and income".

The boarding school, which charged her parents 21,000 RMB (£2,390) per year, is located in the county-level city of Dengfeng in Central China's Henan Province.

It is where the original Shaolin Monastery is believed to have been founded in the 5th century AD.

The school is one a commercial offshoots of the Shaolin Temple - itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010 - and the girl's parents sent her there "for some exercise" on the recommendation of a neighbour.

An investigation team has ruled out beating or other suspicious circumstances as the cause of death for a seven-year-old girl who died at a martial arts school in Dengfeng, Central China's Henan province, two days after she enrolled, CCTV has reported.

The conclusion comes after forensic experts from Dengfeng and Zhengzhou conducted an examination of the girl's remains and public security carried out an investigation at the school.

The girl's parents had no objection to the findings, and the case will not be registered as a criminal case.

The girl's parents sent her to Xiaolong Martial Arts School on Sunday. At 9:40 am on Tuesday she fell to the ground during a class break and died before an ambulance could reach the scene.

According to previous media reports, the girl's father said there were kick marks on her stomach when he saw her remains at the mortuary.

"The surveillance camera was far from my daughter. It seems like someone pushed and kicked her," Deng said after watching a video clip obtained from the school.

Public information shows that Xiaolong Martial Arts School's legal representative is Chen Tongshan, father of actor Shi Xiaolong.

The school has more than 12,000 students and over 2,000 teachers.

(Scott Taetsch/Getty Images)

Russia-born boxer Maxim Dadashev has died from injuries suffered in the ring. He was 28.

His death was first confirmed by his trainer James “Buddy” McGirt and Donatas Janusevicius, Dadashev’s strength and conditioning coach, and later by the Russian Boxing Federation.

“The Russian Boxing Federation expresses deep condolences to Maxim’s relatives and close ones,” the federation said in a statement. “We mourn together with you.”

The rising star — who beat two former world lightweight champions, Darleys Perez and Antonio DeMarco, last year — was promoted by Top Rank Boxing.

“Maxim was a terrific young man,” Top Rank boss Bob Arum said in a statement. “We are all saddened and affected by his untimely death.”

Dadashev, who collapsed after a loss to undefeated Subriel Matias in their junior welterweight (140-pound) bout at the Theater at MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland on Friday, underwent surgery early Saturday morning to relieve swelling on his brain.

He was then reportedly placed in a medically induced coma.

Dadashev, originally from St. Petersburg, Russia, who had not lost in 13 previous fights, collapsed in the aisle as he tried to leave the ring under his own power, and vomited, before being placed on a stretcher and rushed to a local hospital.

The fight — an IBF World Title Elimination fight, with the winner earning the right to challenge IBF title-holder Josh Taylor — had been stopped by McGirt before the 12th-round bell.

McGirt was seen on video pleading with Dadashev to let him end the fight.

“Max, you’re getting hit too much,” McGirt said after the 11th round. “Please, Max, Please.”

Dadashev wouldn’t give up so McGirt ended the fight by telling the ringside physician, “That’s it, doc.”

“I didn’t want him to go in the 12th round either,” Dadashev’s manager Egis Klimas told ESPN after the fight.

But he didn’t think his boxer was in serious danger.

“It never looked like Max was, like shook down, or he was already, like, going down,” Klimas said, “I never saw that.”

The fight was the co-main event on the Friday card aired by ESPN.

“I just hope that Maxim is all right,” said Matias after the fight, per The Washington Post. “He is a great fighter and a warrior.”

The neurosurgeon who performed the two-hour surgery on the boxer Saturday morning told his manager that Dadashev was showing signs of severe brain damage, ESPN reported.

Russian boxer Maxim Dadashev died Tuesday after suffering a similar brain injury during Friday's fight in Maryland against Subriel Matias of Puerto Rico. He was 28.

Santillan (19-6-2), a super lightweight, made his pro debut in 2015. Eight of his 19 victories came by knockout. He was the son of fighter Hugo Alfredo Santillan and was from the same region, Santa Fe, as Marcos Rene "Chino" Maidana.

According to ringside reports, Santillan's nose began to bleed in the fourth round and, though he raised his arm in victory after the fight, he passed out as the judges were announcing the draw -- scored 95-95, 93-97 and 96-94 -- against Abreu (10-1-1).

"Upon admission to the hospital, he had successive kidney failure and he did not come out of his coma," Olocco said. "He had swelling of his brain and he never recovered consciousness. The swelling continued to worsen, and it affected the functioning of the rest of his organs."

Yemeni Kung Fu champion Hilal al-Haj's body was flown into Yemen's southern city of Aden on Thursday (AFP Photo/Saleh Al-OBEIDI)

Dubai (AFP) - Slim and with a tight-trimmed beard, Yemeni Kung Fu champion Hilal al-Haj dreamed of finding athletic glory in Europe, but a risky sea journey to get there ended in tragedy.

The 25-year-old athlete drowned in the Mediterranean after being swept away as he attempted to swim from Morocco to the Spanish enclave of Melilla last week.

His family in Yemen's rebel-held capital Sanaa was expected on Friday to bury the 2011 Yemen Kung Fu champion, who had also racked up a series of medals from Asian and Arab championships.

"He was looking for a country that would appreciate his talent and recognise his value as a human being and athlete," his older brother Saeed said.

"He loved life, he detested war," he told AFP by phone.

Saeed saw his brother just hours before he headed to Morocco, where on September 16 he attempted the dangerous swim to the Spanish enclave.

The athlete was proud of his heritage, his brother said, but competing in a country pushed to the brink of famine by a years-long war between the government and rebels had brought challenges.

Yemen was rife with "contempt" and "injustice", Saeed said, adding his brother was treated unfairly by the Huthi rebels who took over the capital in 2014 despite taking no side in Yemen's conflict.

After returning to Sanaa from a championship in Azerbaijan, where Haj won third place representing Yemen, he expected to be celebrated by rebels.

"The answer was painful. They told him that no one had asked of him to raise the flag of Yemen," Saeed said.

- 'Powerful wave' -

Years of war have made leaving and entering Yemen nearly impossible, but Haj faced even greater difficulties when attempting to cross over the heavily fortified land barrier surrounding Melilla, on the northern coast of Morocco.

After two months of failed attempts, he decided to swim for it, his brother said.

"It was a short distance. People before him have tried and succeeded," he told AFP.

"My brother was athletic, it seemed like it would be easy, but tragedy struck and he was swept away by a powerful wave."

A friend accompanying Haj on the swim who managed to make it safely to the Spanish enclave said the journey was "extremely difficult".

"The waves were so high," the friend, who asked to remain anonymous, told AFP.

"When (Haj) screamed, I thought it was because he was tired. I didn't know he was drowning."

Haj's body was recovered and flown into Yemen's southern city of Aden on Thursday. It was expected to be carried on to the capital in an ambulance, Saeed said.

Sanaa airport has been under blockade since 2017 by a Saudi-led military coalition backing the government against the Iran-aligned Huthis.

Haj's father and younger brother are expected to arrive from Saudi Arabia to attend the funeral.

"He always said that we can't reach our sports goals by staying in Yemen," Haj's friend Jamal el-Sabri told AFP.

"The failure of the sports institutions, corruption and nepotism destroy sports and talent. The more time passes, life is becoming more difficult and our ambitions are dying."

Patrick Day dies after suffering traumatic brain injury in welterweight fight

Junior middleweight Patrick Day has died from injuries sustained in his 10th-round knockout in Chicago on Saturday night, the boxer’s management company, DiBella Entertainment, announced on Wednesday.

According to the statement, Day succumbed to the traumatic brain injury he suffered in his title bout loss to defending champion Charles Conwell. He was surrounded by his family, close friends and members of his boxing team at the time of his death.

"On behalf of Patrick's family, team, and those closest to him, we are grateful for the prayers, expressions of support and outpouring of love for Pat that have been so obvious since his injury," the statement read.

Day, 27, fell to the canvas on Saturday after falling under a barrage of punches in the 10th and final round. Day was treated by a doctor in the ring and then was rushed off on a stretcher by paramedics and transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he underwent emergency brain surgery and fell into a coma shortly afterward.

As of Sunday evening, Day was still in a coma and was in “extremely critical condition,” per DiBella Entertainment.

In an emotional open letter to Day on Monday, Conwell said he had replayed the fight "over and over in my head" and was riddled with feelings of guilt and regret over the outcome.

"If I could take it all back I would. No one deserves for this to happen to them," Conwell wrote in the post. "I prayed for you so many times and shedded so many tears because I couldn't even imagine how my family and friends would feel."

DiBella Entertainment added that Day's death made it "very difficult to explain away or justify the dangers of boxing at a time like this."

"This is not a time where edicts or pronouncements are appropriate, or the answers are readily available. It is, however, a time for a call to action," the team said. "While we don't have the answers, we certainly know many of the questions, have the means to answer them, and have the opportunity to respond responsibly and accordingly and make boxing safer for all who participate. This is a way we can honor the legacy of Pat Day. Many people live much longer than Patrick's 27 years, wondering if they made a difference or positively affected their world. This was not the case for Patrick Day when he left us. Rest in peace and power, Pat, with the angels."

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A young boy is fighting for his life and could remain in a vegetative state even if he survives, after he was was thrown nearly 30 times in a judo class last week.

The seven-year-old student from Nanyang Elementary School in Taichung City's Fengyuan District, surnamed Huang (黃), attended his second week of judo classes in the basement of a gymnasium operated by Ruisui Elementary School at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday (April 21). During class, the 67-year old coach, surnamed Ho (何,) ordered a 10-year-old student to perform a shoulder throw on Huang multiple times.

After several throws, Huang began to complain of pain in his feet and head, and pleaded with the coach not to be thrown any further, even vomiting at one point. Unmoved, Ho ordered the child to be thrown 20 times.

In a video of the incident Huang can be seen crying and begging on his knees for the punishment to end. However, Ho then personally throws the child another seven times.

At around 9 p.m., Huang reportedly passed out, turned pale, and became unresponsive. Ho then called for an ambulance that rushed him to Feng Yuan Hospital for emergency treatment, reported Liberty Times.

Doctors found that Huang's injuries resembled those from a car crash and including a severe intracranial hemorrhage, which prompted them to perform an emergency craniotomy. After the operation, doctors declared that Huang was in a "brain dead state," and if he survives, he will likely remain in a vegetative state.

When visiting the hospital after the child underwent surgery, Ho initially claimed the child had fallen on his own. It was only after learning about the serious nature of his injuries did Ho admit that he and a student had thrown him many times.

When police took Ho in for questioning on April 23, he claimed the boy had cried when being thrown in previous classes and presumed he was complaining without good reason. Ho was then investigated for negligent bodily harm (過失傷害), before being released without bail.

Cho Chun-chung (卓俊忠), head prosecutor of the Taichung District Prosecutor's Office, said that Huang's parents pressed charges against Ho for negligent bodily harm and that they are not ruling out pressing charges for negligent homicide (過失重傷害) if their son dies, reported UDN. Huang's father said it would take a miracle for him to regain consciousness and he demanded an apology and explanation from Ho.

The Brazilian wrestler Leandro Lo, one of the world's top jiu-jitsu fighters and an eight-time world champion in the martial art, died on Sunday after being shot in the head by a man he argued with at a party in Sao Paulo, Brazil's largest city.

The murder occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning at the exclusive Club Sirio, in the south zone of Sao Paulo, where the athlete had gone with friends to enjoy a performance by a popular music group at a party.

"The idol of a sport, Leandro Lo leaves us materially," the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Sport Confederation (CBJJE) said in a statement.

"We offer homage and reverence to the one who helped and inspires so many people to wear the kimono around the world."

According to witnesses, the wrestler got into an argument for reasons still unclear with a man who was apparently drunk and whom he pinned down with a typical martial arts armlock in an attempt to calm him down.

Once free, the assailant pulled out a gun and shot the world champion in the head.

He was eventually transferred to a hospital, where he was diagnosed as brain dead.

His assailant, who fled after the crime, was declared a fugitive, although the Sao Paulo Military Police said they had already identified him.

Leandro Pereira do Nascimento Lo, 33, was an eight-time world jiu-jitsu champion in five different categories and won five World Cup titles in the sport, as well as eight Pan-American titles in the sport.

The fighter, who won his first world title in 2012 in the lightweight category, was still active and in May this year he won a new world title, but in the middle-heavyweight category.

"The first title was the feeling of becoming world champion and this last one was the feeling of still becoming world champion, the two best feelings of my life," the fighter said in a post on his social media.

The Brazilian was scheduled to compete in the coming days in a championship in the United States.

Yora Tade, a 24-year-old up-and-coming kickboxer from the northeastern Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, has died days after suffering a blow to the head during a national championship.

The athlete was rushed to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai on Sunday after a “hard knock on his head” took him down during the final match of the National Kickboxing Championship, the hospital told CNN Wednesday. He was in Chennai to compete in the Wako India Seniors National Kickboxing Championship, The Arunachal Times reported.

Tade collapsed in the ring after opponent Kesav Mudel kicked him in the head during the match in Chennai on Sunday, the second such fatality in as many months, Agence France-Presse reported. The mixed martial arts expert was competing in the Indian edition of the World Association of Kickboxing Organizations tournament.

“The patient was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition and died during treatment,” a doctor at the Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital told AFP.

The mixed martial arts expert succumbed to his injuries while in the ICU on Tuesday “without responding to treatment,” the hospital said.

Police are investigating, and authorities were working to return Tade’s body to his hometown. His death came after the July demise of Nikil Suresh, 23, who also died from a brain injury after being punched in the face by his opponent while competing in a state tournament in Bangalore, AFP said.

Tade’s death reverberated throughout the kickboxing world, starting with his home state.

“Jolted to learn that our bright Kickboxer Yora Tade left for his heavenly abode,” tweeted Pema Khandu, the chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh. “Too early to leave us, dear Tade! No words to express my grief. You will ever be in our hearts. Condolences to bereaved family, friends & admirers. May your journey to ultimate abode be peaceful!”

“I am extremely shocked & sad to hear the sudden demise of Late Yora Tade; a young promising boxer of our state,” tweeted Mama Natung, the state’s minister of sports and youth affairs. “It’s a great loss for Sports fraternity of our state in general. My deepest condolence to the bereaved family. May his soul rest in peace.” Another tragic death.

Law enforcement in the Transbaikal region in Russia have been accused of driving a local martial arts champion to suicide.

Oleg Sorokanyuk’s body was found on Nov. 10. at a local children’s martial arts school that he founded earlier this year. The 32-year-old’s death was ruled as a probable suicide, though reports have since emerged shedding light on the circumstances leading up to the athlete’s death.

According to local Transbaikal new outlet Chita,ru, which first broke the story on Sorokanyuk’s passing, the athlete’s death took place shortly after he was interrogated by local law enforcement over allegations that one of his trainers had physically assaulted several children during a summer camp at his facility.

The reports were later confirmed by Transbaikal Minister of Sports Andrey Seredkin, who clarified that Sorokanyuk was merely a witness in the case.

“We talked with him, and Oleg said that the case did not concern him,” Seredkin said. “He was only there as a witness. In my opinion, there are more questions for another guy, whose name is Andrei.”

In October 2022, a criminal investigation was launched into Andrei Yemtsov, a 24-year-old former student of Sorokanyuk who was later hired as a trainer for the children’s summer martial arts camp. Yemtsov was accused of assaulting two young children with his first, as well as a rolling pin.

While Sorokanyuk, who also served as the president of the Federation of Pankration and MMA in Transbaikalia, was not named as an assailant, he was criticized by the authorities for hiring a trainer with no prior experience teaching martial arts or children.

“The junior coach who did not have a pedagogical education, having taken on the functions of an educator, systematically beat two young boys,” the Trans-Baikal Territory Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement. “Employees of the sports school, by verbal agreement, without drawing up an employment contract, allowed outsiders who do not have the skills to work with children to work with children.”

Elena Khzanyan, the journalist who first broke the story for Chita,ru and whose own child trained under Sorokanyuk, accused local authorities of driving the athlete to suicide through their ongoing investigation—a view that was reiterated by Sorokanyuk’s family.

“He did not have the strength to fight against the system,” Khzanyan said on the VKontakte social network. “I really want all caring people who know Oleg not to ignore this.”

Both the Ministry of Internal Affairs for Transbaikalia and the local prosecutor’s office refused to comment on the situation or confirm whether an investigation will be conducted into the actions of the employees involved in assessing the criminal case.

Sorokanyuk was a three-time Russian and European champion in universal karate, as well as an avid practitioner of sambo, taekwondo, kickboxing and judo. He leaves behind a wife and a young daughter.
What an odd story.

UPDATED 1 HOUR AGO

He was sent to a martial arts club to pick up self-defence lessons, but instead, an eight-year-old boy in China was allegedly beaten and left for dead by the very trainer meant to protect him, the day after his enrolment.

The boy’s parents had signed him up for a year’s worth of lessons at the Chongde Juying Martial Arts Sports Club starting on June 17, paying a reported 7,680 yuan (S$1,440) for him to be trained at the club in Qingdao, Shandong.

But on June 18, the boy was taken to the Third People’s Hospital in the eastern Chinese province’s Chenyang district and was declared dead on arrival. Medical records cited by Chinese daily The Paper revealed that his heart had stopped about 20 minutes before he reached the hospital.

The Chenyang branch of Qingdao’s Public Security Bureau said in a statement on Monday that three people linked to the club – the couple in charge of the club and one coach – were arrested at around 2pm on June 18 over an alleged criminal case of intentional harm that led to one death.

Investigations are ongoing, with the club’s operations halted.

In a video that has been circulated online, a man can be seen attempting to prop up a boy, who is apparently feeling faint, on a chair in what appears to be a classroom. The boy, who is wearing an orange T-shirt with the martial arts club’s name on its back, falls off his seat onto the floor as soon as the man stops supporting him.

As he lies motionless on the floor, a woman’s voice can be heard saying: “If you keep doing this, your mum has told me, she will not pick you up for one year.”

Sydney Shaken by Triple Homicide in Martial Arts Community, Instructor Hospitalized Amid Investigation
In the quiet suburbs of Sydney, a narrative unfolds that reads like a tragic script from a suspense thriller, yet it starkly reminds us of the unpredictable nature of human relationships and the shadows that can lurk behind seemingly peaceful facades. The discovery of three bodies in two separate locations has triggered a major homicide investigation, drawing attention to a martial arts studio in North Parramatta and linking a tale of family, estrangement, and possibly revenge.

The Unfolding of a Tragedy

The serenity of Sydney's north-west was shattered with the discovery of two bodies within the confines of a taekwondo studio operated by a well-known martial arts instructor. The victims, identified as a woman and her child, were found in a scene that hinted at a violent struggle. Almost simultaneously, in Baulkham Hills, the body of a man believed to be the woman's estranged husband was found, adding layers of complexity to an already mystifying case. The martial arts instructor, now fighting for his life in the hospital with stab wounds, becomes a central figure in this distressing puzzle.

A Link Between Scenes

The connection between these grim scenes was not immediately apparent until the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad pieced together the narrative threads. The instructor, known as Master Lion Yoo, had sent a concerning message to his students and their parents, a clue that prompted further investigation into the studio's events. With forensic technicians combing through the scenes and detectives delving into the victims' backgrounds, the investigation has taken a focused turn towards understanding the relationships and interactions that defined this tight-knit community. The role of the martial arts studio, not just as a place of learning but as a social hub, is now under scrutiny.

Community in Shock

The ripple effects of this tragedy have touched the hearts of many in the community, leaving friends, neighbors, and acquaintances grappling with the reality of such loss. The martial arts community, known for its discipline, respect, and camaraderie, finds itself at the center of a narrative it never wished to be part of. As Master Yoo remains hospitalized, unable to provide answers, the police are exploring all avenues, including the potential involvement of a fourth man who presented himself with injuries. The investigation is a testament to the complexities of human relationships and the unforeseen forces that can drive them to a breaking point.

As the streets of North Parramatta and Baulkham Hills return to their usual calm, the shadows of this tragedy linger. The community is left to wonder about the circumstances that led to such a devastating outcome and the stories untold within the walls of the taekwondo studio. The investigation continues, with the hope of bringing clarity and closure to a case that has deeply affected the lives of many. The resilience of the human spirit, often celebrated in martial arts, is now being tested in the most harrowing of circumstances.
