I'm interested to know what type of weapon(s) folks could or do generally carry around with them. For Hung Ga or any Southern style. I have a friend who carries a keyring with a small baton. He says there are batons that can also convert into knives, but I'm not crazy about relying on a knife. Any other ideas?

the iron fan is one. On a hot summers day, how can a cop stop you for having a fan? but in regards to self defense, it will get the job done.

I like to carry pens. If a cop stops you, you can't get busted for carrying pens. A good pen can act like one of those key ring batons.

however, a real martial artist should be able to use what ever is in his possession as a weapon. we focus on all types from belt buckles being a shield, to using the belt in the fashion of a steel whip.

I was once given a boat oar and told to try to use it as a weapon.

yeah yeah, drake the fake.......just kidding. :D I was once given a bible, as a weapon against evil entities like drake the snake.

We've done tried everything from sitting down (like squatting on the pot) type scenarios as well as worked things out like using rolled up newspapers, or even milk crates as a makeshift weapon.

no need for an iron fan. A wooden one when closed makes a great tool for striking vital areas. Chopsticks are also good. I bought a tactical pen awhile back-paid too much for it. It has an aircraft aluminum barrel with a knurled grip. You can buy a Cross steel barreled pan which is less conspicuous and does the job nicely. A metal bookmark is also good.

Knife aside, what do these "improvised weapons" have to offer ?

Although the "kubaton" is a great concept I'd opt for something more (otherwise) useful. Definatly more police friendly, and you will probably have more cause for using it for the original purpose than for self defence. For example a small adgustable wrench, flashlight, sommelier tool, whatever... hits just as hard as the kubaton stick.

you know, back when i was growing up in the ghetto, all fighters used what ever they could as a weapon. Hell, i used to cut the star out of Mercedes Benz car emblems, and use them as throwing stars.

But, effective as it may be, this one was extremely funny to me because if you weren't african american there was no need to have one. I'm talking about the hella oldstyle afro picks. it had a handle, with metal teeth. we would carry those with us, and people tried to laugh until they were shown why we carried them. they could do some major damage.

But, a wooden or steal fan is short and compact. it can be used for hand locks, jabbing, and striking and used defensively as well. to me, this is a perfect weapon because there's no law saying you can't carry a fan on a hot summers day. ;)

actually, when you do the math,
if you fall down seven times, you get up seven.

unless the seventh time, you fell down two flights of stairs.

Most of the time I carry a kubaton and a folding knife. I tell people the kubaton is a decoration, which it is. The folding knife is a tool 99.999% of the time.

When I go to a place where these might be an issue, I carry a sturdy pen.

How about less smaller weapons and more faith in your kung fu. That is my motto.

But if I must pick one I like parking meters. yes officer he tripped on the sidewalk and hit the parking meter.

Weapons are a part of kung fu, aren't they?

A good weapon to learn for self defense is the double daggers. Not that you want to walk around stabbing people(or do you;)) but the techniques can be used with pencils or pens which aren't suspicious to carry. I know some of you will protest stabbing techniques due to the legal situations that can arise but if you find yourself in a situation where your life is threatened? If you go to court that means at least you lived.
