Hello everyone...

It looks like I'm in the mood for a move out of sh!tsville, Alabama and I'm thinking of moving back home to Virginia.

My questions was does anyone know of any good Kung Fu schools in the Annanndale area? I'll be open to travel (not looking forward to that beltway though) so too much distance isn't going to be a big problem.

I'm really hoping I could find a really good Shaolin school. I'm looking for a school with good focus on the traditional open hand and weapons forms. I'm also open to san shou classes.

I'll take anything though. After being in Montgomery, AL for so long, I'm ready for some real good kung fu. Wudang would be really cool too (I have a bit of an obsession with the temple martial arts), as would mantis.

I personally prefer Northern styles to Southern ones, but the Sifu is what makes the biggest difference.

So...any suggestions?

At the risk of revving up this thread, I'd recommend the Shaolin Do school near Shirlington in Arlington, VA. I've been there for just under a year and am very happy. I took Longfist from Sifu Mike Barry in Maryland years ago and, when I moved back to the DC area, was looking for a good Kung Fu school as well. I went to a few places and was most pleased with SD. If you haven't heard of SD (not to be confused with USSD), there's a bazillion-page thread about it on this forum. You can come to a class for free, so there's no harm in checking it out. No high-pressure stuff.

Ah....got to be honest with you, that won't be my first choice. I really do appreciate your input though, I really do. I'm not ruling it out completely...but it'll be a great plan..(no offense)...X...

Hoy Lee is in Virginia Beach, VA. He was on the cover of our 2008 September/October issue. (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/magazine/article.php?article=780) The story is live online (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/magazine/article.php?article=785), along with the original source interview (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/magazine/article.php?article=786). Isn't Lloyd Irving in Arlington? Skip the Kung Fu and go there.

EDIT--Use the Yellow Pages, Luke. (http://www.switchboard.com/Arlington-VA/Martial-Arts-&-Self-Defense-Instruction/)

this thread title reminded me of that old kung fu porn video. you know . . .. where they'd fly through the air all crouching tiger style, but then get it on like jack rabbits on crack in the exchanges.

Howdy
Not real sure where Annanndale is. Is that Nor Va?? If so then there are
a number of very good Jow Ga schools in that area. Not that i'm totally biased
to one style over another but these are the ones i know about.
Jow Ga Shaolin--sifu Hon Lee, Herndon VA
Jow Ga Athletic Assoc.--sifu Derek Johsnson, Columbia MD
Wong Chinese Boxing--sifu Raymond Wong, DC
Sifu Ron Wheeler is also in DC
Jow Ga Academy--sifu Charles Middleton, Richmond VA
Sifu Troy Williams teaches in Gaithersburg(?) or Owings Mill(?) MD
and if you're in SE VA as Gene said you can check my teacher sifu Hoy Lee
in Virginia Beach, Jow Ga KF.
And if you're near Kensington, MD, Hung Fut from sifu Yim Tai is a must!
Also in VB is sifu Gorden Lo (Lo Kam w.. son and a student of Duncan Leung)
Sifu Leung moved to China a few years ago.
There is also a student of Sam Kwok teaching Wing Chun in Newport News/
Yorktown area. I think his name is sifu Massengill(?).
There is definitely more gung fu in Nor Va. A couple good Mantis schools though
i don't know the names of the schools/teachers.
A few good bjj, MMA, and judo schools around here as well.
Hope this helps a little.

peace

Yea, Annanndale is in NE Va. Awesome list, and thanks to everyone for their responses.

I'm actually driving up tomorrow for a couple of weeks and will do some scouting about while I'm there. I can always come back and ask for specifics.

Thanks again for everyone's help.

Hope you guys have a great holiday season.

Cheers.
