Why am I putting this? besides the obvious lessons?

As Guro Crafty Dog said:

Allow me to add to/rephrase that:

"One is reminded about the dangers of not realizing that EVERY confrontation is potentially a ARMED confrontation."

YES!!!

"Therefore there is tremendous advantage in fighting methods which are the same whether against EH or Knife."

"We are also reminded that grappling with a knife ideally means first ZONING from the possibility of a knife, being AWARE of the knife ASAP, and controlling the knife."

Think upon this.

And I replied:

Agreed, Guro.
It is too bad that the majority of systems do not take into account the attacker being armed, shocking considering the majority were created in a time where many walked around armed !
A system that works from the premise of ARMED rather than UNARMED makes a lot more sense, I mean, if your "defense" works VS a knife there is a pretty good chance it will work VS an UNARMED attack.

Thoughts?

I have never been a big fan of the kali view of having the unarmed work based on the armed work, while the "imitation" of a stcik is possibel with empty hands, not so with knives.
I do however agree with the kali principle of "defending" every attack as if it was an armed one, typically armed with a knife.

who would that be? you live in the middle of nowhere and your only contact with others is via the internet. You;re basically a self admitted shut in.

I can't imagine what sort of dangers from street thugs you would ever have to face in your cottage environment where the greatest danger you face is a tree falling on another tree close to the tree you really like.

what would you really do? start juggling to distract the tree form falling?

what would you really do? start juggling to distract the tree form falling?are you kidding me? i live on a plot of land in the middle of one of the fastest growing counties in pennsylvania... monroe county, look it up... we got more new yorkers and new jersey thugs moving in by the truckloads everyday. just because my pictures show woods in them doesn't mean i live in seclusion. if you were to stand outside you would hear all the traffic... it's mind-boggling to say the least... there is this rapidly growing problem with inner city gangs sprouting up all over the place; the local police force has a gang task force... you are really off in your assumption of where i live... big time... the roads are clogged in nearly every town around here. i live in tannersville pa, right near east stroudsburg where the the tai chi fest that dale goes to used to be held. we have that new casino open up and was taken over by the state a few months later because of its ties to organized crime... this ain't the city, but it is bad enough...

I would honestly say that, while a good idea, assuming your opponent is probably armed doesn't quite address the full scope of it. Unless you're fighting an empty-handed nudist in a clean, open space, there's pretty much always some weapon or other available to them, and you don't really ever know ahead of time who's going to be clever enough to pick up that random object and beat, cut, choke, or otherwise hurt you with it. I would say that, rather than assuming each opponent is probably armed, the best way to go is to recognize that each opponent is armed, and will likely become further armed, or more dangerously so, as the confrontation progresses. Not only does that mindset keep you on the lookout for everything from a knife to a bottle in your opponent's reach, it keeps you thinking about any and all improvised/environmental weapons available to you in addition to whatever weapon(s) you carry with you.

It also keeps away the "take a shot to give a shot" mentality that can happen to some people.
