Anyone else going? I'm applying for press credentials right today. I wasn't going to go because it's the same day as Berkeley's CMAT (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=36106), so it'll be a really big work day for me. But I talked to Cung and he convinced me I should try to go. Cung is slated to call the fight and if Shamrock wins, I'm guessing he'll call Cung out for a rematch. Cung would probably honor that, given his traditional roots in kung fu. He's been coaching Josh Thompson and James Terry (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=51260&page=2) who are both slated to fight that night.

Many have asked when Cung will go back in the cage. That's a good question, which I put to him last Wednesday. He's obligated to defend the belt for Strikeforce, but they haven't given him a deadline because he's got four movies in the queue this year. Every time one of those movies gets promoted, Strikeforce gets mentioned, so they're pretty happy with him holding the belt for now. The four films, if you haven't been keeping up, are Fighting (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=50719), Tekken (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=41428), Pandorum (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=52570) & True Legend (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=52398). That's putting Cung on a pretty busy promotion tour schedule for this year, not much time to prep for a rematch. But if Shamrock wins and calls him down, his honor will be at stake, so there you have it.

I'll have more on this very soon. Stay tuned. Hope to see you at Shamrock vs. Diaz (http://www.strikeforce.com/index2.html).

I've been asked to pass this along to readers by good people at Strikeforce.

On Thursday, March 12th, at 12 noon, there will be a kick-off press conference about this fight featuring Shamrock, Diaz, Shields, Lawler and others at the Avalon Hollywood, 1735 N. Vine St., Hollywood, hosted by Strikeforce and Showtime. If you're in that area, drop by and check it out. It's open to the public.

And if you do that, be sure to give us a report here. ;)

I haven't got my confirmation yet, but I don't expect that until next week. Looking forward to the fight. James Terry on the undercard is one of Cung's fighters.

Coker working hard to ensure Strikeforce continues growth (http://www.thetandd.com/articles/2009/03/30/sports/doc49d03c47dca51669377998.txt)
By Brian Linder, T&D Sports EditorMonday, March 30, 2009

Scott Coker is a busy man.

Of course, the founder and CEO of Strikeforce wouldn’t have it any other way. Busy, in Coker’s world, means successful.

“We have a ton of fights to do,” Coker said. “We have probably quadrupled our workload, getting the TV contracts.”

In February, Strikeforce completed a deal to buy Pro Elite (Elite XC) and a TV deal with Showtime – which will air the company’s upcoming April 11 card featuring Frank Shamrock versus Nick Diaz in the main event. The company also has a TV deal with NBC. That, combined with the influx of fighters from Pro Elite, has left Coker scrambling to make everything come together.

“I think it’s an exciting time for our company,” he said. “We were able to pick up 40 of the top athletes (from Elite XC) … Jake Shields, Robbie Lawler, Gina Carano and some guys that you likely haven’t heard about but that are up and coming guys. Mix that with our roster, the Frank Shamrocks and (Renato Sobral) Babalus of the world … we are going to be very busy.”

There are more fighters to come. Strikeforce has been rumored to be in the Tito Ortiz sweepstakes and Coker confirmed talks with Kimbo Slice. In a world in which the UFC is established as the top dog, Coker’s Strikeforce has made a name for itself. In fact, it’s one of the few promotions that UFC President Dana White has praised.

“It only took 20 years to become an overnight success,” Coker joked. “About three years ago, there were so many leagues in the space – Bodog, IFL, Pro Elite, UFC, Pride – the landscape has really changed. Now, there’s UFC, our company, DREAM in Japan, those are the three major leagues that are doing the big fights throughout the world. I think the landscape has changed so that the top fighters are going to fight for these leagues.”

Strikeforce initially entered into the martial arts world when ESPN2 launched. They put on breaking contests, weapons contest and kickboxing for the network then. Now, in the mixed martial arts world, Strikeforce has respect but is still faced with the uphill battle of competing for consumer dollars with the UFC – essentially the NFL of the mixed martial arts worlds. That being said, Coker’s company has managed to assemble a stable that includes several of the world’s top fighters and the business plan for keeping the company relevant in the minds of MMA fans is simple.

“It comes down to putting on great fights, great television fights and great live events,” Coker said. “We have been successful at doing that. In the three years we have been in this business, we have put on some high profile fights. We had the fight of the year in Cung Le and Frank Shamrock last year. So, we have been able to put on fights that are relevant, keep putting on big shows, big live events that people want to see.”

He points to the April 11 Showtime card as evidence of the fights the company is able to put on. Shamrock (23-9-2) will main event against Diaz (18-7); Josh Thompson (16-2) will take on Gilbert Melendez (14-2) in a lightweight championship rematch, Scott Smith (14-5) will take on Benji Radach (19-4) and Chris “Cyborg” Santos (6-1), one of the top female fighters in the world, will take on Hitomi Akano (14-5).

“I think we are going to do the best card we have ever done in the history of Strikeforce,” Coker said. “Frank versus Nick Diaz and the rest of these guys you normally wouldn’t see on an undercard. We have three fights that could probably main event in another show.”

Coker’s determination to put on a good show for the fans has his biggest name, Shamrock, fully convinced Strikeforce will be a player in the MMA game for years to come.

“Scott’s the real deal when it comes to martial artists and a promoter,” Shamrock said. “That’s what the sport has been missing for a long time. We’ve kind of lost the martial arts in mixed martial arts, and I have 100 percent confidence that Strikeforce, Scott Coker and Silicon Valley Sports Entertainment can bring that all back. They are all successful business people that know about martial arts. We have had business people. We have had money people. We have had martial arts people, but we have never had those people in one company, on one team, until now.”

I'm actually looking forward to this match the most on the card. I like both fighters and their both local.

Gilbert Melendez sounds off (http://www.15rounds.com/gilbert-melendez-sounds-off-033109/)

Melendez (14-2), the former Strikeforce lightweight world champion, will attempt to recapture the belt when he takes on current champ Josh “The Punk” Thomson (16-2) on Saturday, April 11 live on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) from the HP Pavilion at San Jose. The fight is a rematch of their classic five-round battle in 2008 when Thompson earned a unanimous decision victory over Melendez to win the title.

The “Shamrock vs. Diaz” event represents the dawn of a new age for Strikeforce as it will be the first one under its new television agreement with Showtime Networks Inc. The live telecast will feature up to five fights including a thrilling main event between three-time world champion and MMA legend Frank Shamrock (24-9-1) and fellow knockout artist Nick Diaz (18-7, 1 NC) contested at a catch weight of 179 pounds.

Middleweight (185-pound limit) sluggers Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith (16-5, 1 NC) and Benji “Razor” Radach (19-4) will also meet in a featured contest.

Rival forces from different worlds will meet when women’s mixed martial arts (MMA) sensation, Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos (6-1) of Brazil collides with “Smack Girl” Champion Hitomi “Girlfight Monster” Akano (14-5) of Japan, in a 145-pound showdown.

Heavyweight mixed martial arts (MMA) forces, Brett “The Grim” Rogers (8-0) and “Abongo” Humphrey (12-0) will put their unbeaten records on the line when they face off.

Tickets for “Shamrock vs. Diaz,” priced from $30, are available for purchase at the HP Pavilion box office (408-287-7070) as well as at all Ticketmaster locations (408-998-TIXS), Ticketmaster online (www.ticketmaster.com), and Strikeforce’s official website (www.strikeforce.com).

Below are some highlights from the attached sound bites recorded at the workout. For full audio, please download the documents attached to this email.

What do expect from Josh:

“I expect the same Josh. Sticking and moving, sticking and moving, and trying to stay light on his feet. He’ll fight with a lot more tricks, a lot more strategy. Maybe go low, and then high and fight at a lot more angles. Josh is a great. He’s a pioneer in the sport and I expect everything from him. He’s good everywhere. He had great takedowns last time as well and I expect a good fight from him.”

On how his training is going:

“I feel great. I feel like 25 minutes is like a normal thing for me. It’s a jog. It’s always hard to feel completely prepared because I always feel like there isn’t enough time in the week to prepare and do everything I need. I feel confident that I’m going to do a hell of a lot better than my last performance out there. I’m just looking forward to performing a lot better than last time.

Are there any friends at 155 pounds?

“Everything is different now. Guys have asked me to train. Diego Sanchez asked me to train now that he’s dropped out of 155. I’ve learned it is war out there. You gotta have your team and you have to stick by it. Sometimes you want to do things to help you out. It’s nothing personal out there, but I want to beat every 155-pounder out there except Nathan (Diaz) so it’s just the way it has to be.”

Showtime Streams MMA Match, With BitGravity's Help (http://www.contentinople.com/author.asp?section_id=450&doc_id=175076)
Written by Ryan Lawler
Wednesday, April 8. 2009 at 05:55 PM EDT

With a little help from content delivery network (CDN) BitGravity Inc. , premium cable provider Showtime Networks Inc. will be streaming its first mixed martial arts (MMA) match this weekend.

By launching its new Strikeforce: All Access offering for this Saturday's MMA matchup between Frank Shamrock and Nick Diaz, Showtime is hoping to complement its existing subscriber and cable pay-per-view options with an online component.

While the Strikeforce telecast is available to Showtime subscribers, the company also makes some MMA matches and other events available on a pay-per-view or à la carte basis through local cable systems. But this weekend, the cable programmer will make the offering available online for the very first time.

"We're looking at this as a technology test and and an opportunity to test a new business model as well," says Chris Lucas, Showtime's vice president of new media.

In doing so, Showtime is moving beyond just providing the same linear telecast that its cable subscribers and pay-per-view customers will see. For $24.95 -- the same price as the cable pay-per-view offering -- the online version will provide interactive features and social components that are unavailable on cable TV.

Online viewers will be able to switch between five different video feeds and multiple audio tracks during the fight. The offering will also include access to exclusive photos from professional photographers backstage, as well as from fans. Finally, Showtime has provided a social component by creating a Facebook Connect application to allow viewers to post comments on the All Access page.

"The thing that's interesting about this is the interactivity," says Chris Turner, BitGravity's vice president of worldwide sales and business development. "This is going to be more compelling content than if you watched it on TV, because this type of interactivity is really compelling, when you provide this type of environment for a user."

The whole thing was put together by BitGravity and online video publishing firm Episodic Inc. According to Showtime's Lucas, BitGravity's ability to offer high-quality video streaming with no buffering and the ability to switch between streams was an integral part of his company's decision to choose the CDN.

"Our concern was finding a technology provider that could provide a video stream that is instant-on, and as close to the TV experience as possible," Lucas says. "Looking at different technology solutions, we felt they offered best solution to deliver that experience."

Also important was the price. "State-of-the-art technology does not come inexpensively," Lucas says. "But they were very competitively priced."

RODRIGO DAMM TO FACE GILBERT MELENDEZ IN INTERIM LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP FIGHT

STRIKEFORCE: “SHAMROCK VS. DIAZ” This Saturday
Live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT)
From the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

New York (April 9, 2009) - Sengoku star Rodrigo Damm (8-2) has made his way from his native Brazil to California to replace injured Strikeforce World Lightweight (155 lb. limit) Champion Josh Thomson in the matchup with Gilbert “El Nino” Melendez (14-2) this Saturday on the live SHOWTIME televised portion of Strikeforce: “Shamrock vs. Diaz” mega-fight card at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. (Pending California State Athletic Commission approval)

The winner of the five-round bout between Melendez and Damm will be crowned the Interim Strikeforce Lightweight Champion and be granted a shot at Thomson when the injured fighter is ready to return to action.

Damm captured the attention of MMA fans worldwide on June 8, 2008, when he scored a second round TKO on rising American Top Team star Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal at Saitama, Japan’s Saitama Super Arena.

The victory over Masvidal capped off an eight fight win streak for Damm, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist who has produced submissions in five of his eight career wins. Damm has been fighting professionally for five years.

Thomson sustained a broken leg last week while sparring and was forced to withdraw from his rematch with Melendez. Thomson won the title in his initial encounter with Melendez, a five-round, non-stop-action battle via unanimous decision at the HP Pavilion on June 27, 2008. Thomson underwent surgery shortly after the break occurred. His estimated recovery time has not been determined.

The 26-year-old Melendez, an expert in both Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, is looking to return to the win column after his last start, the loss to Thomson. A resident of San Francisco, Melendez went unbeaten in his first 13 professional appearances, a run that catapulted him into the world top 10 rankings.

The “Shamrock vs. Diaz” event represents the dawn of a new age for Strikeforce as it will be the first one under the world championship MMA promotion’s new television agreement with Showtime Networks Inc. The live telecast will feature five fights including a thrilling main event between four-time world champion and MMA legend Frank Shamrock (24-9-1) and fellow knockout artist Nick Diaz (18-7, 1 NC), contested at a catch weight of 179 pounds.

Middleweight (185-pound limit) sluggers Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith (16-5, 1 NC) and Benji “Razor” Radach (19-4) will also meet in a featured contest.

Heavyweight mixed martial arts (MMA) forces, Brett “The Grim” Rogers (8-0) and “Abongo” Humphrey (12-0) will put their unbeaten records on the line when they face off.

Women’s MMA power houses, Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos (6-1) and Hitomi “Girlfight Monster” Akano (14-5) will slug it out in a 145-pound showdown.

Strikeforce “Shamrock vs. Diaz” will air live on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) on Saturday, April 11.

HP Pavilion doors open at 4:30 p.m. for “Shamrock vs. Diaz” on Saturday. The first preliminary bout will begin at 5 p.m.

Purdy: In mixed martial arts, it is indeed no pain, no gain (http://www.mercurynews.com/columns/ci_12112861?nclick_check=1)
By Mark Purdy
Mercury News Sports Columnist
Posted: 04/10/2009 06:09:23 AM PDT

About a year ago, Frank Shamrock had a bad night at the office. He broke his right forearm.

That can happen when your office is a caged ring.

Shamrock was fighting Cung Le in a mixed martial arts bout at HP Pavilion when Le mixed up Shamrock's ulna bone with one swift kick. This eventually led to a third-round defeat for Shamrock. His description of the injury is quite... uh, specific.

(ADVISORY: Those who cringe at violence in sports should go read about bowling or poker for the next few paragraphs.)

"It actually happened in the first round," Shamrock said the other day. "I leaned into the kick with my forearm and I felt something give and thought to myself, I think my arm's broke. But I threw the next punch and it didn't hurt — just a little weird, you know, vibrating funny. But it's not as if my arm was falling off."

And then?

"The further I got into the fight, I could tell something was wrong," Shamrock said. "In the third round, he hit me with one more kick and I could feel the bones separate. That's probably the worst pain I've ever had — very, very focused, extreme pain."

Or, as that feeling is known in the mixed martial arts world: Good times.

(ADVISORY: Bowling and poker fans may now resume reading.)

Shamrock remains San Jose's most under-the-radar world-famous athlete. He has set up a new attic gym at San Jose Athletic Club, across from St. James Park, where he comes and goes without much notice among the downtown workers. But as one of his sport's biggest names, Shamrock can draw seven-figure audiences to cable television and crowds of more than 10,000 to arenas — as will happen Saturday at the Tank.

It's going to be Shamrock's first fight since his ulna went to pieces that were screwed back together by doctors. The event is a pretty big deal, and will be telecast on Showtime. Just don't call it a Shamrock comeback.

"A comeback?" he said crankily. "I didn't know I went anywhere."

Neither has mixed martial arts, which gained legal status in California three years ago and has since attracted both ardent followers and ardent haters. The sport has not yet become the 21st century's most popular and sensational attraction, as some predicted. But it's still doing excellent business as various promoters — including the local Strikeforce group — keep battling for control and dollars.

Shamrock is 36 and has been around since MMA's beginnings; his big-perspective view is uncommon to athletes in most sports. He completely understands the whole marketing/business side of his game and just co-authored the book "MMA For Dummies." Last weekend, Shamrock flew to Houston for Wrestlemania. He sat in the front row next to his pal Mickey Rourke as more than 72,000 people cheered and hooted the biggest stars of pro wrestling. Shamrock was paying more attention to the staging — must have cost $5 million, he figures — and the production values.

Pro wrestling is scripted, of course. Mixed martial arts is not. Yet Shamrock believes the MMA people could learn a few lessons from their more theatrical brothers about how to build up an event. He lays out the story line for Saturday's show:

Shamrock is the MMA legend and psychological master. His opponent, Nick Diaz, is a 26-year-old punk from Stockton who freely admits he smokes marijuana recreationally (he had one MMA victory stripped for failing a drug test) and will be in way over his head against one of MMA's legends. At a prefight press event, Shamrock reached out to shake Diaz's hand, and Diaz responded with an obscene gesture. Three years ago, before a packed HP Pavilion house, Shamrock defeated Diaz's mentor and coach, Cesar Gracie.

"Nick was right there in Gracie's corner that night," Shamrock said. "The minute I knocked him out, Nick was yelling he wanted to fight me. No one gave it a second thought because he was 160 pounds or something. Now he's 185 pounds. I weigh 185 pounds. Showtime wanted an exciting fight, and Nick is the guy for that. He always goes forward."

So what's to prevent Diaz from breaking Shamrock's other arm? Or did he learn anything from the matchup against Cung Le (who, incidentally, also has not fought since that brutal evening)?

"The lesson I learned from the Cung Le fight," Shamrock said, "is this: What we do is very dangerous and really shouldn't be played with. I should have just knocked him out, not let him dance around and look good."

Shamrock then happily reveals the plan for national dominance: After conquering Diaz, the next step will be the first of many broadcast-network appearances, which will permanently release MMA from fringe status.

"I believe we're going to end up on CBS prime-time television later this year and we're going to have 5 to 7 million viewers," Shamrock said. "We're two years away from mainstream. We're five years away from being the biggest sport in the world. The only thing that's going to deter us is if someone gets horribly killed on prime-time television."

Well, yes. That would be bad for marketing. Or would it?

Pretty good fights last night, although it seems as though Frank Shamrock was not in shape for this fight.

Frank is probably at the end of his career. He looked a thousand times worse than he did in the Cung fight, which I thought he was actually gaining an advantage before his arm got broken..

Diaz was clowning Frank. Frank got angry and locked into a losing strategy. Diaz was longer and out reached him with mad shots to the face. I was amused to see Shamrock lose on a psych level, since he used to be a master of intimidation. Diaz totally reversed that.

Here's my notes on the fight stats (my apologies for any inaccuracies - I wasn't being that strict about the stats). All the fights were decisive. It was a good night for Strikeforce.

NICK DIAZ def FRANK "The Legend" SHAMROCK Rd 2-3:57 TKO

GILBERT "El Nino" MELENDEZ def RODRIGO DAMM Rd 2-2:02 KO

SCOTT "Hands of Steel" SMITH def BENJI "The Razor" RADACH 19-4 Rd 3-3:24 KO

CRIS Cyborg def HITOMI "Girlfight Monster" AKANO Rd 3-0:35 KO

BRETT "The Grim" ROGERS 8-0 def ABONGO HUMPHREY Rd 2-1:38 KO

Undercard

LUKE ROCKHOLD def BUCK MEREDITH Rd 1-4:05 tap

ERIC LAWSON def WAYLON KENNELL Rd 1-4:45 TKO

RAUL CASTILLO def BRANDON MICHAELS tap

JAMES TERRY def ZAC BUCIA unanimous decision

JEREMY TAVARES def SHINGO KOHARA Rd 2-0:04 KO

On another note, I'm totally crushing on Gina Carano. She's hotter in person than she is on screen. Don't tell my wife.

Hispanic Business missed the boat on this one. Never mind Frank. What about Diaz and Melendez?

Strikeforce's Frank Shamrock Becomes the Face of MMA -- Again (http://www.hispanicbusiness.com/entertainment/2009/4/10/strikeforces_frank_shamrock_becomes_the_face.htm)
April 10, 2009

UFC's original star emerges to lead Strikeforce on the national stage. For Shamrock, the consummate showman, it's all business this Saturday night, on a national stage. On the precipice of his fight with Nick Diaz, Shamrock spoke to HispanicBusiness.com.

A contingent of nervous CBS executives was frantically pacing behind closed doors and the men in suits were about to panic. The opponent for the network's mixed martial arts cash-cow, Kimbo Slice, injured himself two hours before the fight, leaving Slice without a challenger, and CBS without a main event for its fall primetime network MMA show.

After a disastrous rating for the network's summer "Saturday Night Fights" card, the show needed to deliver in the ratings or else. In essence, the future off MMA on primetime network TV hung on the success of the show.

One of then men in the tension-filled room that afternoon was Frank Shamrock, a mixed martial arts legend, who was also CBS' color commentator for the network's first two shows. After about an hour of batting around ideas for how to save the show, Shamrock raised his hand and said, "I'll fight Kimbo."

There were chuckles. Nobody really believed him. Frank said it again. The laughter faded. Now it was getting intriguing.

Jumping from the broadcast booth into the cage to fight a man that weighed 50 pounds more than him would have been ratings gold, the kind of real-life cartoon drama that even the WWE's Vince McMahon would be envious of.

But that's also the kind of stuff that the 36-year-old Shamrock loves.

He's the sport's most charismatic star. He's fearless. And ultimately, he's a showman.

"What Race Are You?"
When you are born with the name Frank Alisio Juarez, you'd think you'd know you are Hispanic. But it never dawned on young Frank, who grew up poor largely on the streets in Santa Monica. His white mother and stepfather raised him after his birth dad abandoned the home. His reality check came when he was 11 years old, when his fists landed him in Juvenile Hall, and the guards asked him, "What race are you?"

A skinny Frank was about to learn not only that he was Mexican-American, but that fighting would be his ticket out of poverty and into history.

At age 11, he was declared a ward of the state of California. He bounced around in various foster homes. It looked like his Frank's fate was sealed: just another poor, reckless kid who gets in trouble and winds up prison, or worse.

But at the age of 13, Frank found his savior in the form of a man named Bob Shamrock, who ran a group home for troubled teens. The elder Shamrock instilled values and a sense of pride in him. The group home was where he also met an older teen named Kenneth Wayne Kilpatrick. The two would eventually bond with each other and the elder Shamrock. Bob Shamrock adopted them and they became Frank and Ken Shamrock, two of the greatest mixed martial artists in the history of the sport.

It's Showtime
It's the day before the fight and Frank Shamrock is hunkering down.

His latest blog posting on FrankShamrock.com reads, "its time to get serious. i am taking off to the hotel and getting ready to cut some weight. i was 185.2 when i got up so its nothing of a cut. looking forwrd to that BARBQ after. nick is gonna die. i love this sport. see you all at the weigh ins. frank "

Nick Diaz passes drug test (http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-spw-mma-diaz21-2009apr21,0,7316945.story)

Nick Diaz can breathe easy.

The mixed martial arts fighter, who openly discussed his enjoyment of smoking marijuana before an April 11 main event in Sacramento where he was tested for the drug, has tested clean, according to the California State Athletic Commission.

Diaz, 25, from Stockton, defeated MMA veteran Frank Shamrock by second-round technical knockdown in San Jose's HP Pavilion earlier this month on a Strikeforce card.

Before the bout, Diaz told The Times in a lengthy interview that he has struggled with attention deficit disorder and found, "I'm more consistent about everything being a cannabis user. . . . "I can pass a drug test in eight days with herbal cleansers. I drink 10 pounds of water and sweat out 10 pounds of water every day. I'll be fine."

William Douglas, the assistant executive officer of the state athletic commission, told The Times at a commission meeting last week that he had "read every word" of The Times story. Diaz tested positive for marijuana in Nevada in early 2007, having a victory changed to a no-contest.

But he cleared the latest screening in California, and will likely be on another Strikeforce main event in the near future.

It was sad to see Frank take that bad of a beating. (He's one of my favorite fighters) I still think he came back to quickly after suffering a BROKEN ARM. Nick Diaz on the other hand looked great. It's funny how underrated his striking is. I remember when he fought Lawler and everyone was saying Nick needs to take him to the ground and wound up out striking Lawler. Nick has an excellent ground game, but his striking is just as nasty.
