Hello everyone,

Just a quick reminder of the three evening Single Palm Change Intensive starting Monday March 16, held in Union Square, Manhattan.

This is the first in a series of Baguazhang Intensives being offered this year:

March 2009 = 12 hours of Single Palm Change (seminar descriptions below)
June 2009 = 12 hours of Double Palm Change
October 2009 = 12 hours of Xiao Kai Men

Instructor Mike Martello will be our guide on this indepth look at the structure, feeling and function of Baguazhang. Mike is a teacher who is able to physically express the principles as well as explain them, aiding you in manifesting the skills yourself. Relaxed power. Supple root. Clear communication. Sense of humor. All good things in a teacher. He is a lifelong martial artist who loves what he does and this comes across in his teaching.

Single Palm Change: Part 1
Monday March 16, 6pm-10pm
$50

On Monday we will learn to isolate and develop the action and feeling of the Single Palm Change. After Jibengong we will learn the basic choreography of the Single Palm Change. After learning the external movements, we will work to develop an awareness and feeling of the rooted elastic power inherent throughout the entire movement. We will train isolate and test individual actions to develop the qualities necessary to open your body and begin the development of Baguazhang's unique power. During the first part of the evening we will work with a linear version of the Single Palm Change. In the second part of the evening we will work with the Single Palm Change while walking the circle.

Single Palm Change: Part 2
Tuesday March 17, 6pm-10pm
$50

Continuing Monday evening's exploration of the Single Palm Change, tonight we will begin with Jibengong and a review of the Single Palm Change choreography, mechanics and feeling. Having covered the form, we will now move on to the function. How is the Single Palm Change used? What type of power may be expressed? The twisting, coiling, turning and spiraling actions all have uses and Mike will lead us through a selection of these techniques in order help us explore and improve our solo practice.

Single Palm Change: Part 3 (Bagua Needles)
Wednesday March 18, 6pm-10pm
$50

Here we will again review the essential mechanics and feeling of the Single Palm Change and modify it's use as required by the Bagua Needles (aka "Piercers"). We use this paired weapon as a method to deepen our ability to feeling the coiling force in our bodies. The sharpened ends aid you in developing spatial awareness while the weight aids you in developing physical strength, relaxation and your connection to the ground. Simply hold them while you walk the circle, or work your forms, and will soon feel the difference. In this class, we will focus on a handful of essential drills, learning to safely handle the Bagua Needles, and then integrate the weapon into the Single Palm Change. We will deepen our training with the Needles in June 2009 via the Double Palm Change and in October 2009 via the Xiao Kai Men ("Small Gate Opening") Baguazhang sequence.

Bah, if only I could take time off work to go to NY...
Sounds neat though.
