- Forbidden City Cop: Smart Dog --

Having wrapped up Future Cops two months ago, Wong Jing is off to direct another movie, this time a spin-off of Forbidden City Cop called 《大内密探灵灵狗》 which roughly means Forbidden City Cop: Smart Dog (or 009 onomatopoeically). This period comedy, starring Louis Koo, Barbie Hsu, Fan Siu Wong, Liu Yi Wei, Sandra Ng, Tong Da Wei, and Yuen King Tan, is currently undergoing production in a palace in Beijing.

Forbidden City Cop: Smart Dog takes place in some distant past, whereby the emperor (Liu Yi Wei) has 12 Secret Imperial Guards, who are named after the 12 Zodiac signs, to protect him around the clock. Louis Koo plays the Chief Imperial Guard known as Smart Dog, as his zodiac sign corresponds to that of the dog. He has emotional entanglements with swordswoman Hopeless, played by Barbie Hsu. Fan Siu Wong takes on the role of a wildly ambitious eunuch, who wants to usurp the throne. And to carry out his plan, he has to get rid of the 12 Secret Imperial Guards. Chutian Metropolis Daily

Quick Look at the Various Roles In Forbidden City Cop: Smart Dog
-- Forbidden City Cop: Smart Dog --
In Forbidden City Cop: Smart Dog, Louis Koo's character, Imperial Guard "Dog", will be somewhat similar to Stephen Chow in the original, where he's more into cranky inventions than martial arts and believes that technology will overcome latter. However, his outlandish contraptions never seem to work and he's often snided by the other Imperial Guards.

Big S Xu Xi YuanOnly his brother - Imperial Guard "Tiger" (Tong Dawei) - and his fiancé swordswoman "Hopeless" (Big S Barbie Hsu) are behind him. However, the rather obtuse "Dog" remains unaffected by Hopeless' love and the little things she does for him.

Fan Siu Wong takes on the role of Eunuch Cao, who's after the throne and bent on taking out Dog, who's the head of the 12 Imperial Guards. Yet, there's a bigger plot behind Eunuch Cao's treachery, and Dog will be facing far bigger threats and hidden dangers.

Complimenting the lineup are Chinese host and comedian Liu Yi Wei and Sandra Ng who play the Emperor and Empress respectively; Leung Kar Yan and Yuen Kin Tan who are playing Barbie Hsu's parents, while Law Kar Ying plays Louis Koo's buddy, a mysterious and elusive person; Lam Tze Chong assumes the role of Imperial Guard "Pig", and such a film would be incomplete without the mandatory malevolent minister "Moo Moo The Mocking Bull", played by Na Wei, as well as the Emperor's most favoured concubine, played by the cross-dressing Lee Kin Yan aka Ru Hua.

Martial arts stars Sang Wei Lin and Chen Jia Jia, both discovered by Tsui Hark, and now signed to Beijing Ciwen Digital Oriental Film & TV Production, and have worked with Wong Jing on TV adaptation of Fox Volant of Snowy Mountain, are also joining this production.

Is this supposed to be a sequel to the Stephen Chow classic Forbidden City Cop?

Or is it a remake?

Did Stephen Chow participate in any part of the imagining of this movie?

Le sigh.

The original was a true classic because Chow plays a wheedling, clever, manipulative little pompous ******* so well.

Remake - not so sure.

Wong Jing is a pretty wacky director but Chow is a tough act to follow.
