What stands in the way of your training?

I can honestly say that I do OK creating space for my training and get enough done to be right where I should be.

But the one thing that kills me is FATIGUE.

This is because I work 3 jobs: teaching assistant at a university, intern at a county Planning department, and freelance classical violinist/violin teacher. I am "also" a Masters Student of Geography at that same university.

The fatigue is more mental than physical, I'd say. Even then, I don't feel right if I haven't practiced my kung fu. To me, training in kung fu is more important than anything else I do (save training in classical violin).

How about you guys?

I would imagine that the violin takes a load of you time.. When I was seriously into piano, I practiced at least 3 hours a day on school days and 5 on weekends.

As long as this much isn't damaging to your health (mentally and physically), then I suppose it is OK.

Aw DrunkenMonkey, leave the porn off this forum.

I was enjoying the REST of your insightful post, and you're too cool to post such offensive stuff.

I need not practice that long at violin anymore. My skills are solid after 20+ years of unending training.

That doesn't mean that I don't put in my time. In my lineage (Leopold Auer was my sigung), we practice basics CONSTANTLY.

Auer said that if you needed more than 3 hours of practice a day, one should quit the violin.

I don't have a partner to train with so I am lacking in furthering my development of listening energy and other aspects of two man exercises that are crucial to well rounded development right now.

Gives me plenty of time to work all the other stuff I have been taught though :)

20 years? Wow. I just made 10.5 years when I quit piano.. Things for me got too complicated and I didn't have time to develop anymore. I practice once in a while now. I suppose its fitting.

Working rotating shifts, a second part time job, and family life in general. I still manage to teach for six hours a week, but my personal training time is non-existant.

Working all week every week with my family!!!
But I am leaving in 8 weeks to start training Wing Chun full time. Can't wait. :D
Also injury. I had a couple of broken bones from Boxing & Muay Thai, & that certainly slows ya down.

Nothing really stands in the way of my training, except for school, sometimes i have sooooooo much homework, but i usually train anyways, and forget to do my homework until the day before it's due :p

I don't have a training partner, so i don't get a lot of chi sau in, but i do forms, basics, and work on the wooden man, so i have lots of stuff to do :)

A Julliard trained violinist and in a master's program? Forget Kung Fu since you've got it all already.

Rock climbing.

I think I can count on my hands the number of times I've seriously trained this summer... and the fall for that matter.

I really find that climbing four times a week in addition to kung-fu to be just too much on my hands.

The only thing that gets in the way of my training is myself.

I complain that I have no space - but he11 - all it takes is a few square feet to do basics (stances and such).

I complain that I am tired all the time - but he11 - the more I work out the more energy I will have because of the better shape I will be in.

I complain that I have no time - but he11 - I KNOW I can make more time.

So - the only thing that stands in the way is myself.

Like others here, my first job, 8-5 monday through friday, second job, another 20 hours a week, a wife, 3 kids (one is a new born) and daily/weekly house work. Right now I can't afford to even continue at a school, but don't even have enough time to practice the basics at home.

Four kids, when I get home...is pretty much a time hog. I have to train late or not at all. Cardio wise, I train when I get home by running or none at all. I play 4.5 level tennis every Sunday for 3.5 hours solid until I can barely walk straight. That pretty much kills my entire body and legs until the next day.

BTW...have a problem with standing meditations? Get four very loud kids, and you will really cherish doing this. It is literally my very favorite thing to do in training!

Also, congats on the violin. I played saxophone for 20+ years and taught too. You have reached an incredible level of accomplishment. I have trouble practicing, due to the effort involved in progressing skill wise any further. So it is either lots of practice a day, or no practice. The stuff takes over my mind

Music. (like Huang ;) )

Trumpet

I play in a brass quintet, 2 big bands (jazz), and 1st trumpet in an Orchestra. I should be doing at least 2 hrs a day practice, but can't. am performing the Shostakovich concerto for trumpet and piano in 6 weeks.

Piano

I love playing Liszt, Rachmaninoff and Albeniz. Unfortuneately this means I have much practice that I need to do, but dont have time to do.

Guitar (electric)

Play lead guitar in my rock group.

Choir

Sing tenor in the chapel choir. That's another 8 hours per week.

ah well. I have lots. + KF training.

but then I couldn't live my life any other way.
