How did the tournament go?

The guy who won the southern advanced forms was interesting. He was flapping his arms/hands like a bird but he had powerful movements in between. Anyone know what style he was doing?

he's southern mantis, a student of sifu Manuel Rodriguez up in Ventura. that was a crazy form, huh!

the tournament was a lot of fun, i didn't stay to see any of the fighting (didn't fight this year) but the competition was great and the master's demo was very good as well.

Manuel Rodriguez does not do southern mantis. He is a student of Dr. Kam Yuen's. I believe that he learned mantis and northern shaolin. I've seen that form. It's kind of strange to me.

Cha Kuen,

Your thinking of Manuel Marquez he is affiliated with the Tai Chi Mantis Group/Sifu Kam Yuen. His school is in Lomita, California near Torrance.

Manuel Rodriguez is a totally different individual. He is located in Ventura, California

yeah, you're thinking of manny marquez, whose students dress up like shaolin monks. manuel rodriguez does southern mantis and five family styles, he is good friends with my teacher. the form that his student did is a southern 8 drunken immortals form done with a bit of s. mantis flavor, his student was telling me that they added some s. mantis footwork and hand shapes to the set.

anybody else go to the tournament? it was much smaller this year than before.

I must say the tournament was lots of fun. As always the masters demo was great and had a good variety of styles represented. This year I was fortuniate to meet with a number of old friends as well as make some new ones.

Cha Kuen sorry you couldn't make it I was looking forward to meeting with you. I did however see and work with your sifu, it's always enlightening for me when we get together. I learn so much in such a little time, it's outstanding.

I would like to thank Sifu Edwards and the Shan Tung Kung Fu Association for inviting us at Authentic Kung Fu out again this year. Your ability to make us welcome and to be a part of the family is always appreciated, especially this year. It's such a pleasure to work out with a group that doesn't let their ego control their actions when working out with them.

To Kicking Mantis and all my Eagle Claw Kung Fu brothers and sisters, you guys are the best!!!! Thanks for all that you and your brethren did for us while we were there. You of course have a standing invitation to visit any time you'd like. Oh, by the way everyone from the first trip has been questioning me about how all of you are, and send their best to each of you.

Eagerly awaiting next year,

Steve D.

Hi all,

The Shan Tung Kung Fu Association would like to thank everyone who participated in this year's 5th Annual Jade Mountain Tournament. The success of this event was made possible due to the efforts of various individuals who volunteered their time and effort. Thanks to the various sifus who volunteered their time to help organize and judge these events.

The Shan Tung Association would also like to thank the two schools; Eagle-Dragon School of Spokane, Washington and Authentic Kung Fu School of Fort Worth, Texas, for making their long trek to our event. We had a fun, hard workout on that sunny Saturday; we exchanged ideas and we learned from each other. We than grabbed dinner at a local Chinese restaurant. (Hmm... Chinese food... how fitting for a kung fu tournament! Wha ha ha! Get it! :) ) All in all, we had a great time; an event which, to some, lead to the continuation, and to others, the beginning of kung fu commadary among our schools.

Again, thanks from Shan Tung.

BTW, who won the fighting events? I didn't get to stay for those events. Can you post what the results were or at least the top 3 by name and school?

thanks

Did a student of Sifu Tony Puyot's win the sparring?

To my knowledge, none of Sifu Puyots students participated this year in the Jade Mountain Tournament.
