Do you breath in or out on the up phase and why?.

Exhale during the concentric portion. That's the rule for every exercise. So for pushups, breathe out as you're pushing up.

my old teacher breathed in going up...the PE books repeat your voice of wisdom;) in sex we exhale on the down phase of the push up...you stab the ground maybe that's where he got it from...

breathing out helps tighten the core, which adds power to your movement, same reason you breathe out or kiai during a punch, makes it stronger, also tightens up the muscles to allow you to take a hit.

That being said, i am a big fan of breathing naturally, just let your body do what it needs to do and forget about the breathing. At faster paces it is impossible to breath with the timing of your movement, you would hyperventilate.
