Bikini-Clad Baristas Charged With Prostitution After Reportedly Serving More Than Coffee (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,555066,00.html?test=latestnews)
Thursday, September 24, 2009

Five bikini-clad baristas in Everett, Wash., face prostitution charges after police said that they served up more than just hot coffee at an espresso stand, Q13FOX.com reported.

The five women, employed by Everett's 'Grab-N-Go' espresso stand, have been charged with prostitution and violating the city's Adult Entertainment ordinance, Sergeant Robert Goetz told Q13 FOX News.

Police reportedly conducted a two month investigation into the bikini-clad baristas' behavior after multiple customers complained. During the probe, police found inappropriate and lewd behavior, Q13FOX.com reported.

"For extra money these women would expose their entire body. If they were wearing a bikini they would either take it off or at least lower it. There were some allegations... Complaints from our citizens that they were performing whip cream shows between two women," Everett Police Sergeant Robert Goetz told Q13 FOX News.

In one instance, police responding to an alarm at the coffee shop found a barista with no clothes on, Q13FOX.com reported.

But Bill Wheeler, the owner of the Grab-N-Go, is defending his business — explaining that the women who work at the espresso stand each sign agreements guaranteeing that they will not behave inappropriately. Wheeler tells Q13 FOX News that the business' policy is strictly enforced and all employees who violate it are terminated immediately.
Related Stories

"Any girl caught doing anything illegal will be fired on the spot," Wheeler told Q13 FOX News. "Every girl that works for us knows that our policy states clearly, acceptable attire for work. They must cover their bottoms and use pasties, if necessary," Wheeler said.

If convicted, the bikini-clad baristas could face a fine of $1,000 and up to 90 days in jail.

BONNEY LAKE, Wash., June 5 (UPI) -- Coffee stand owners in Bonney Lake, Wash., are violating city laws by allowing female employees to wear provocative clothing, a city official said.

City Attorney Jim Dionne said city law prohibits clothing that exposes "any portion of the female breast below the top of the areola" in a commercial location, KIRO-TV, Seattle, reported Wednesday.

Nudity involving the baristas makes espresso stands -- including Cowgirls Espresso and Hot Chick-a-Latte -- a public nuisance, prohibited by law, the Tacoma News Tribune reported.

Dionne said the coffee stands have become a problem because of the outfits.

Bonney Lake Mayor Neil Johnson said he hasn't witnessed any violations since mailing a letter to coffee stand managers more than a week ago.

Bikini Baristas Making Waves (http://www.theinsider.com/news/903814_Bikini_Baristas_Making_Waves)

A small coffee shop that has a few location in Washington state is making international headlines for a very simple reason - their Baristas wear bikinis. Cowgirls Espresso started as a small independent coffee stand painted like a big cow, but on one hot day that all changed. An employee was allowed to wear a bikini top and business boomed. Bikini Wednesday was born and after that each day was given a new sexy theme. People in towns where these shops do business aren’t too happy, but the employees are loving the work.

Jessica Bustare, 21, Everett, sat on a bench and waited for a job interview outside the Grab ‘N’ Go on a chilly afternoon early this week. An athletic-looking 19-year-old barista with blonde hair wearing a bikini and flip-flops took a bag of trash out of the shack and tossed it into a garbage bin.
“I don’t really consider this too sexual,” Bustare said. “I think it’s fun and cute.”
Leslie Preskitt, 21, a trim, upbeat barista at Cowgirls Espresso near downtown Everett, wore a pink-and-white striped bikini as she worked a silver espresso machine Wednesday afternoon.
She’s been working at the stand for three months and said she gets twice as much in tips in a day than she did in a full week when she worked at a coffee chain store.
Baristas at similar stands say they consistently fetch more than $100 a day in tips.

Hooters chain seeks buyer; could fetch $250M (http://www.nypost.com/p/news/business/hot_for_hooters_FCcJCPEhfsGbcdQoM81HVL)

Hooters is rattling its cans on Wall Street.

The Atlanta-based "breast-aurant" chain -- famous for the scantily clad waitresses who serve up its burgers and spicy wings -- is beckoning prospective buyers, sources told The Post.

Hooters has recently shopped itself to a number of private-equity firms as sales have sagged with the recession, sources said. The closely held company, meanwhile, is in advanced talks with a Connecticut-based investor that has been granted certain rights of refusal on any potential transaction, according to one source.

An asking price couldn't be learned, and North Point Advisors, a San Francisco-based investment bank that Hooters has hired, didn't respond to requests for comment. A Hooters spokeswoman couldn't be reached yesterday.

Some analysts estimate the chain might fetch more than $250 million despite the bumpy business climate. Hooters' 450 owned and franchised restaurants, which are as far-flung as Australia and China, racked up more than $1 billion in sales in 2008, according to Technomic, a food-industry research firm.

Nevertheless, insiders said Hooters appears to be strapped financially. The chain's comparable sales lately have suffered steep declines, according to one source, as the hobbled economy has deflated appetites for Hooters' burgers-and-babes fare.

If an upcoming episode of the CBS reality show "Undercover Boss" is any indication, there may be management issues, too. In an episode slated to run Sunday, CEO Coby Brooks discovers a restaurant supervisor staging an eating contest for female employees, forcing them to bury their faces in platefuls of food without using their hands.

"Ladies, if you want to leave early today, you're going to play my reindeer game," the manager says, howling "Hoooo, doggie!" as the women eat.

To make matters worse, Brooks has had to repair damage from ill-advised side ventures initiated by his controversial father Robert Brooks, who died in 2006 after being part of a group that co-founded the firm in 1983.

Not least among them was Hooters Air, a passenger airline that was grounded in 2006 after a three-year effort to elevate the chain's "hotties-in-tight-T-shirts" concept to the skies.

Insiders speculated that the bad fortunes of the Hooters Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas likewise might be a factor. The resort's operations aren't connected with Hooters, to which it pays a royalty fee for the use of its name. But the Las Vegas development was recently in default on $144.5 million in long-term debt as its losses widened and revenue plunged amid dwindling occupancy. Key creditors include investment vehicles owned by Hooters' founders.

On the bright side, Hooters' choice to seek a buyer now could signal that the restaurant industry has found a bottom, said Brad Ludington, an analyst at KeyBanc Capital Markets.
The real reason they failed is that they don't serve nachos.

I haven't been in a while but I do enjoy Hooter's wings.

The women.....my experience is that they are fairly average looking. Of course that now, since the economy has gone south, I'm assuming Hooter's management has a wider labor pool.

Former Everett bikini barista on path to avoid criminal charges (http://heraldnet.com/article/20100305/NEWS01/703059894)
Prosecutors dropped two prostitution charges, and if she stays out of trouble, other charges will be dismissed.
By Diana Hefley
Herald Writer

EVERETT — A former Everett bikini barista accused of selling sex at a Grab-n-Go espresso stand vowed Thursday morning to stay out of trouble so she can avoid spending time behind bars.

City prosecutors agreed to stay action in the woman's case for two years. In return, the Kirkland woman, 21, must not commit any new crimes or violate the city's adult entertainment ordinance.

If she complies with those terms, the city will dismiss two misdemeanor charges against the woman, including operating without an adult entertainment license and violating the standards of conduct of the ordinance.

As part of the agreement, city prosecutors on Thursday dropped two prostitution charges against the woman.

Everett Municipal Court Judge Timothy O'Dell warned the woman to toe the line or she'd be brought back into court and likely found guilty of the adult-entertainment violations.

“I will impose jail time if you don't follow through,” O'Dell said.

The woman also agreed that she would testify against four other baristas also charged with prostitution and violating city ordinances. So far, only one barista has indicated that she plans to take her case to trial.

The others are expected to accept deals similar to the one offered the Kirkland woman. All of them are due back in court later this month.

City deputy prosecutor Leslie Tidball said it isn't uncommon to offer such agreements to people who don't have any previous criminal history.

“We like to give folks an opportunity to be successful and maintain a clean record — at the same time, we want to put a stop to the conduct affecting the public,” she said.

The woman's attorney Brian Ashbach of Marysville said he was confident that his client would have been acquitted of the prostitution charges. The other charges would have been more difficult to defend, he said.

The five baristas were charged after an investigation into complaints of lewd behavior at the stand. Everett detectives reported that the women were exposing their genitals and charging customers up to $80 to touch the baristas' exposed breasts and buttocks.

News of the investigation and criminal charges against the baristas made national headlines. Pictures of the women, including explicit photographs taken during the police investigation, hit cyberspace.

O'Dell on Thursday told the Kirkland woman he didn't need to lecture her. All the attention the case has drawn was enough, he said.

“Hopefully, I won't see you again,” O'Dell said

Would You Like Some Coffee With Your Eye Candy? (http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local-beat/Would-You-Like-Some-Coffee-With-Your-Eye-Candy-101797983.html)
By JESSICA GREENE
Updated 8:45 AM PDT, Mon, Aug 30, 2010

Something is brewing in Fremont's Warm Springs district -- and it's more than just a hot cup of coffee.

A new drive-up coffee shop recently opened in the parking lot of a neighborhood shopping center. The new place is called Your Coffee Cups and features bikini-clad baristas serving coffee.

The menu features "B-, C-, or D-Cup" sizes.

Some neighbors say the idea is inappropriate and degrades women. But, the owner, Robert Martinez, says, it's a creative way to put his sons through college. He's a general contractor who had been out of work for a year before the idea hit him.

So far, business is booming. By the second week they were open, they had already pulled in twice the revenue as the previous coffee shop that was there -- Island Java. The baristas make an average of $50 in tips per four-hour shift on top of their $9 an hour salary, our friends at the Mercury News tell us.

The Pacific-Northwest has become a model of sorts for the scantily clad barista business. Martinez got the idea for his coffee shop from a friend who opened up a similar shop in Oregon. He spent some time in Seattle observing another shop and returned to the Bay Area to open Your Coffee Cups.

Martinez is aiming to open three more shops over the next two years

This is not the first time a coffee shop with this kind of theme has percolated in the Bay Area. Several years ago, an East San Jose coffee shop featuring bikini-clad baristas also raised a few eyebrows.

There's a flash photo gallery on the link below.

Baristas in bikinis perk up Fremont coffee business (http://www.mercurynews.com/bay-area-living/ci_15917668)

FREMONT -- There are plenty of coffee shops in Fremont, but those with pretty young women working in bikinis are hard to find.

That combination is "a gold mine," said Robert Martinez, a formerly out-of-work general contractor who, desperate to help pay his sons' college bills, has opened Your Coffee Cups -- the Bay Area's first bikini barista drive-though coffee business.

The establishment, in a Warm Springs district strip mall, serves Mr. Espresso coffee in a 16-ounce "C-Cup" for $1.85.

But the real draw may be the "eye candy" that comes with each purchase, evidenced by the fact that all 22 drive-through customers during a one-hour stretch Thursday morning were men.

"I'm spoiled," said Ken Lockett, a burly Fremont machinist, just before a barista wearing little more than a bikini top and short shorts asked him, "Is your coffee good?"

"It's always good," Lockett replied smiling, before leaving a tip.

Business has been pretty good since Martinez opened the climate-controlled coffee hut last month at 46685 Mission Blvd.

By the second week, Your Coffee Cups had doubled the revenue of its predecessor, Island Java, said Martinez, who knows the owner of that shop.

And say what you will about the customers, they are good tippers. The baristas say they make an average of $50 in tips during a four-hour shift -- on top of their $9-per-hour salary.

"I have more time for myself," said Samantha Dela Cruz, a 21-year-old
Advertisement
San Jose State student, who takes home more in four hours at the coffee shop than she did working eight hours a day at a Lowe's home-improvement store.

Drive-through coffee shops with bikini-clad servers have become popular in the Pacific Northwest, the land that gave the world Starbucks.

Martinez, whose friend had opened a shop in Oregon, decided to travel to Seattle earlier this year with his fiancee, Irene Mann, to get a firsthand look at the growing fad.

"They were doing good business," he said. "I thought, why not do it here? I hadn't worked in more than a year. I needed to reinvent myself."

Martinez drives to the shop from his Castro Valley home every weekday before 5:30 a.m. to brew the first cup of coffee before retreating to his nearby truck where he spends most of the day with an eye on the shop.

He's hoping to open three more bikini barista establishments in the next two years and, although his first shop is just breaking even, he thinks each of them can eventually net $10,000 to $15,000 a month.

"It's going to literally go through the roof," he said.

The shops have encountered some issues in the Northwest. There have been news reports of baristas flashing customers for bigger tips and customers exposing themselves to baristas.

Martinez and the baristas said none of that has happened at the Fremont shop, which has cameras on the baristas and the drivers.

"They say 'Hi,' they get their coffee, and they're gone," barista Rosanna Ortiz said. "They don't make you feel like a stripper."

"It's just like going to the beach," Dela Cruz said. "It's no big deal. We're not putting ourselves out there."

A few unwitting female customers have voiced their displeasure with the bikini gimmick, a couple of whom decided to take their business elsewhere, said barista Natasha Berg, who studies English at San Francisco State.

But there is a way to offset the opposition being voiced by some of the women, she said.

"You have to talk to (them) a little more so they see you're not an idiot in a bikini."

Orange County authorities cracking down on Vietnamese cafes (http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-sexy-cafes-20110524,0,2912220.story)

In Garden Grove, Westminster and other cities, some of the coffeehouses include not only loud music and strong java, but nudity, gambling and prostitution. Many in Little Saigon are hesitant to speak out against the establishments.

By Nicole Santa Cruz, Los Angeles Times

The tinted windows at Cafe Miss Cutie in Garden Grove are a giveaway that this isn't your ordinary coffeehouse.

At about 20 tables, men play cards and smoke, tossing cigarette butts onto the wood floor seconds before lighting up again. High-pitched pop music pulsates as waitresses dressed in sexy lingerie — and sometimes less — deliver the brew the customers crave: Vietnamese coffee, strong and sweet, in a small glass topped with whipped cream.

The cafe is one of about 20 in this Orange County city, which includes part of Little Saigon, one of the largest Vietnamese American enclaves in the U.S. It also is among those raided in March by more than 150 federal and local law enforcement officials, exposing an underbelly of what police say includes nudity, gambling and prostitution.

Even the Garden Grove police weren't prepared for what they found.

"We were shocked," Sgt. Tom Dare, with the department's special investigations unit, said of the proliferation of arcade-like gambling machines. "A lot of these places want to be legit, but how do they compete with these other businesses? It's almost a chain reaction, where one business tries to one-up another."

In the raid, police seized 186 arcade machines that they say can be turned into a keno or blackjack machine with the push of a button. Also confiscated was more than $145,000 in suspected gambling profits, including $35,000 from one cafe alone. The investigation is ongoing.

"These guys are very organized, they are very intelligent," Dare said, pointing out that profits from a single machine can exceed $3,000 per day. "The reward outweighs the risk."

In response, the Garden Grove City Council recently approved new restrictions, targeting even the tinted windows, that go into effect next month.

Nhut Luong, who coordinates immigration services next door to Cafe Di Vang, one of the older businesses in the area, said he's gotten used to the loud music and is otherwise unbothered.

"We don't care," he said, stressing that local businesses need to support one another.

Nguyen Uong, who lives in Fountain Valley not far from several of the coffeehouses, said the problem isn't the loud music but the nudity and gambling.

"Things like that have been going on for a long time and nobody has spoken up," he said. "It makes me feel like we live in a Third World country"

Many in Little Saigon, which includes neighboring Westminster, are hesitant to speak out against the cafes. None of the waitresses would agree to be interviewed.

There are signatures that many of the cafes share: No alcohol is served, big-screen televisions line the walls, California lottery tickets are for sale, and the coffee is served by Asian women often wearing high heels and nothing more than string bikinis or see-through lingerie. In some cafes, that uniform has dwindled to pasties and a thong.

Lan Duong, an assistant professor of culture and media studies at UC Riverside, has studied the tradition behind the cafes.

"It's not about ogling women per se," she said. "It's about the camaraderie."

Chanh Do, a 57-year-old engineer from Orange, agrees. The subdued Mai Tay Hien off Bolsa Avenue is where he spends his happy hour. Almost each day for more than two decades, he has taken a seat at the far end of the counter to read the newspaper, drink coffee (black, with sugar) and smoke Marlboro Lights.

"Here, it's time to relax," Do said. Everyone there knows his name and knows not to sit in his seat. Waitresses — in sweaters and jeans — know his order.

Phu Vu owns Mai Tay Hien — Vietnamese for "Westside Terrace" — and remembers watching his father build another cafe from studs and nails to its opening in 1986.

"Everybody you see here, it's like a religion to them," he said. "You take away one of those things and they can't live."

But this contrasts sharply with some of the other cafes. On a recent evening, two Garden Grove police officers parked behind a strip mall and walked behind a restaurant and a karate school, hoping to enter California Cafe through the back door. It was locked, forcing them to go in through the front — where tinted windows allow patrons and managers to see them coming.

The officers say they are used to hearing someone shout "canh sat!" — "police" in Vietnamese. In some cafes, police said, women rush to the front desk to tie bikini tops around exposed breasts.

On this night, fresh smoke lingers above stubbed-out cigarettes as the waitresses stare at the officers. Several female employees are wearing thongs, and one is clad in a transparent lacy green bra.

The manager signals that she does not understand English.

"Tell her it's her job to make sure the girls cover up," Officer Jeff Brown tells a third party, a man who claims to be a friend of the owner.

It is not the first brush with the law for Vietnamese coffeehouses. In the 1990s, they became a home base for gangs. Shootings, homicides and fights were common. Extortion was prevalent, leading to ordinances in both Garden Grove and Westminster to restrict cafe hours. Westminster enacted an ordinance requiring a conditional-use permit for the cafes. In order to be approved, the permits require a public hearing.

But with the decrease in violence came an increase in illegal gambling and prostitution as gang members aged and became more sophisticated, according to Dare.

"It's all about money now," he said.

The majority of cafe owners and managers declined to be interviewed.

"We love sexy but not nasty," said one manager, who requested anonymity out of fear of retaliation within the Vietnamese community. "I love green, but I don't want to do it the dirty way."

Vu, the owner of Mai Tay Hien, said his cafe survives because of California lottery sales and, of course, the quality of the coffee, which he says is a blend passed down by his father.

The new restrictions are long overdue, he said. "We don't need those other coffee shops to stereotype us.

"Not everybody wants to buy coffee from a naked girl."[/QUOTE]

'Breastaurants' Ring Up Big Profits (http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/219606)
Restaurants that woo men with attractive waitresses, big beer selections & giant TVs are winning loyal customers--and raking in revenues.
By Jason Daley | Entrepreneur Magazine - June 2011

Guest Connection: A Tilted Kilt pub in Tempe, Ariz.

Franchises inspired by the Hooters model--such as Celtic-themed sports bar chain Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery and faux mountain sports lodge chain Twin Peaks--have expanded rapidly over the last half decade, while corporate-owned chains like Brick House Tavern + Tap and Bone Daddy's House of Smoke are picking up steam regionally. In fact, for the next couple of years, this segment (often referred to as "breastaurants") is poised to be one of the fastest-growing restaurant categories.

Sales figures for this specific niche aren't available, because they are lumped in with the broader casual dining segment--and numbers for the privately held companies aren't publicly reported--but sales at Hooters alone have increased in the last couple of years and average $1 billion annually.

The concept has grown in spite of the recession by focusing equally on upscale comfort food, full bars with extended beer choices, a full menu of sports on TV, and waitresses in tight shirts and short shorts. But the most important aspect of these restaurants is the same element that powers most successful eateries: customer service.

Why is this segment so popular? "It starts with comfort," says Darren Tristano, executive vice president of Technomic, a food-industry consulting firm in Chicago. "These concepts are growing by offering a different level of service and attentiveness.

They provide a service to men who may not have a person at home to take care of them in the same way. That's important to a number of people, and it drives them back."

It's hard to say exactly why these public man caves took hold in the last few years. Some think a shift away from political correctness or toward a more sexualized culture made the concepts more acceptable. Others believe that as Hooters sales flattened and expansion stalled, like-minded entrepreneurs saw a niche that wasn't being filled.

Ron Lynch, CEO of Tempe, Ariz.-based Tilted Kilt, thinks his concept has been well-received because customers were ready for something new.

"Friday's, Chili's--those kinds of concepts came to be very similar in menu and look because they were chasing the same dollars," Lynch says. "When we sprang up, people were looking for something different."

That's what attracted Lynch to Tilted Kilt in the first place. In 2003, Harrah's in Las Vegas asked restaurateur Mark DiMartino if he had a concept for a space in the Rio Casino. He came up with the Hooters-goes-to-Scotland concept that is still the restaurant's theme. When Lynch--an area developer for Schlotsky's Deli--saw the place in 2005, he was hooked, and approached DiMartino about buying the franchise rights. By 2006, there were three Tilted Kilt franchises in the system. The concept has doubled each year. Lynch estimates Tilted Kilt will have 80 units open by the end of 2011, with another 70 deals for new spots in the pipeline.

There's a lot more going on at the Kilt than just men watching women, Lynch says, pointing out that one of the company's key offerings is "sports-viewing excellence," which translates to 50-inch plasma TVs throughout the restaurant, a full bar with a minimum of 24 beers on tap and a menu that ranges from inexpensive snacks to $19 steaks.

But he acknowledges that the cornerstone of the restaurant is the Tilted Kilt waitress. "We make no bones about it--that's what brings people in," he says. "We sell on sex appeal, but we are sexy classy, sexy smart or sexy cute. Not sexy stupid or sexy trashy."

Randy DeWitt had the same idea back in 2004. After growing his Rockfish Seafood Grill franchise too quickly in the Dallas area, he was faced with having to shut down stores. But instead of writing the locations off, he drilled down into the data and realized that while casual dining was tapering off, Hooters and similar concepts were doing well.

That's when he came up with Twin Peaks, a franchise based on a mountain lodge theme, where the girls wear plaid tops, suspenders and hiking boots.

"I knew guys like me would like a man cave where the waitresses are pretty and friendly, and we thought we could create a concept sufficiently differentiated from Hooters," DeWitt says. "I thought Hooters had taken the low-brow route, and we're taking the high road. We have higher-quality food, and the uniforms on our girls are more finished. Hooters is more blue collar. We do well where Hooters isn't accepted."

DeWitt's experiment worked, and he soon began converting more of his seafood restaurants into mountain lodges. Now Twin Peaks has 14 locations, with two under construction and five more in development.

What makes the restaurant stand out, besides the waitresses, DeWitt says, is its commitment to quality. All mugs are frozen, and a special draught system ensures that every beer pours at 29 degrees. They have a full line of top-shelf whiskey, and their skilled bartenders know their booze. The food is all fresh--even fryer items like mozzarella sticks, which are hand-cut, breaded and cooked to order.

But as restaurant consultant Tristano indicates, the true differentiating factor of the modern "breastaurant" is service. Most customers aren't satisfied with brusque service--they want a conscientious server and a meaningful connection.

"Everybody else is rushing toward technology with kiosks that you order off of and servers who slip food to you around the corner. We're going the other way," Lynch says. "One of our mantras during training is that we want to make a connection with our guests. We practice 'touchology,' which means touch the table often, and make guests feel at home. Sometimes waitresses are providing the best part of a guest's day."

Twin Peaks' DeWitt agrees that fostering connections is the key to a restaurant's success, especially when it breeds repeat customers. In fact, some waitresses become mini-entrepreneurs on their own, using Facebook or Twitter to let regulars know what shifts they'll be working or what specials the restaurant is offering.

"When we see regulars walk in the door for lunch, the hostesses and waitstaff greet the guy by name," DeWitt says. Regular customers often ask for certain employees to wait on them, he says, and waitresses are instructed in how to connect with guests.

"We have a certain language and we train that among our waitstaff," DeWitt says. "If you ask for a beer, the waitress will ask 'Do you want the man size or the girl size?'"

Tristano confirms that the servers drive the concepts. "The increased service is absolutely the core, not the food," he says. "I suspect a lot of this segment's success has to do with server training and hiring the right people."

Though this segment of the market is definitely heating up, none of the concepts thinks they are in danger of saturation, especially since their numbers are fairly small and they're not targeting the same geographical areas. Instead, they worry about competition from sports-oriented concepts like Buffalo Wild Wings. In fact, DeWitt says today's market is similar to the one from which Hooters emerged in 1983.

"It seems like Hooters had the whole segment to itself back then, but if you do the research, they had a raft of competitors that popped up--often with really crass names like Mugs 'N Jugs--before Hooters emerged as a clear national leader," he says.

DeWitt is wagering that most of his competitors in the male-bastion market will try to grow too fast and flame out at the regional level.

"Every concept wants to grow and be nationwide, but you have to lay in the infrastructure for growth before going into build-out," he says. "You have to bring in highly talented operators that can manage rapid growth. We're not trying to grow faster than we're capable."

The concept is still evolving. Brick House Tavern + Tap--owned by Ignite Restaurant Group, the company behind Joe's Crab Shack--touts itself as the ultimate man cave, with more than 70 beers, alcoves filled with theater-style seats outfitted with trays where customers can watch the game with friends, and special 100-ounce beer bongs with their own taps. So far, the concept has opened in seven states.

As innovative as they might be, can these concepts survive if they cater only to half the population (and the one that doesn't always choose where to dine)?

"I think these concepts have to target women to be successful," Tristano says. "One third of their customer base is female, and they have to make an effort to make women feel comfortable."

Lynch thinks Tilted Kilt, at least, is succeeding with the female demographic. "I characterize ourselves as very PG-13," he says. "When a guy empties his pockets on the dresser and his wife sees a Tilted Kilt receipt, it's going to be fine. I was surprised when franchisees started asking for high chairs. We are no threat to women, and we train our servers to make a connection with women at the table first."

Although the women may be on board, there's no question that these concepts cater first and foremost to manly appetites.

"Why do regular customers come in three times or more a month?" DeWitt asks. "What more could a guy ask for: great food, sports, beer and a cute girl to look at. We don't go real deep."
See you at Twin Peaks TX. ;)

So there's this sad strip mall near our office. It was a major development project here in Fremont, but the economy dropped out before it was completed and since it's been open, there's only been a few store fronts that have been occupied. 80-90% of the spaces remain empty. It's in walking distance.

There was a nice cafe there for a bit - Cyclo cafe - quality teas and coffees - but it's right across the street from a Starbucks so that didn't survive. I liked that place. They made good sandwiches.

It was taken over by this Vietnamese joint, The Heart Cafe (http://theheartcafe.net/), with frosted glass and a sketchy-looking menu. I never went in.

My bad. It was a Vietnamese bikini-barista joint. I totally missed it. I'm so bummed.

It just reopened as the New Heart Cafe, which I just tried. It's a regular Vietnamese sandwich and coffee joint. :(

You will notice that the moment a "heavier" woman loses weight the first thing she does is where clothing that "objectifies" her.

And they start young.

My 4 year old daughter, well 4 on the 30th of this month, yesterday told me, "Papa, my frog (her doll) is cold!" I learned about a month ago, not to listen to what she says, but to what she means. She meant, "Papa I am cold!"

LOL!! She started talking like this at least a month ago, or at least that is when I started noticing it! Four years old and already talking like a woman!:D

without falling into the trap of misogyny, I am pretty sure we invented the word "fickle" to account for many of the behaviours of women as observed and experienced by men.

Yes, they drive us mad with their ludicrous turntable desires and hot and cold running emotions and their assumption that we should understand that and be empathetic to it.

I mean....Yes, they drive us mad. Even when you're married to the most beautiful person in the whole world that you love very deeply. That woman ESPECIALLY drives you mad.

Women are a very unique and special type of human, LOL !
I stopped trying to figure them out ages ago.
I just accept what is.
I really just don't like when I see women that I care about ( in whichever way) doing stuff that I KNOW is gonna bite them on the ass ( and not in a good way).
What blows me away is that if THEY were to see ANOTHER doing it, they would be the first to point out how WRONG they are.

Agreed, it would seem they have cornered the market on hypocrisy. Not that we don't all do that, but the judgmental hypocrisy of women is what drives daytime television programming and yes, reality TV programming.

Also, if you call a woman "pretty" she'll remember it for a few minutes and not take it to heart, but if you tell her she's ugly, she'll take that to heart and remember it for a lifetime.

There's a Buddhist phrase that says "Women learn from the outside in and men from the inside out".

That whole think about women's intuition? I think it actually is more applicable to men. Men are highly intuitive and demand it in design in fact. As most things are designed by men, it would seem that intuition is a component for most things.

Back to the Buddhist thing, it seems correct to me because I find women will feel better if they are told something positive about themselves or supported with words in regards to how they look. Check out a femme friends facebook. You will see that most of the comments on pictures of her about how pretty or good she looks are coming from other women. As if they are practicing an economy of encouragement with each other.

The less physically attractive she is, the more comments she'll receive about her prettiness from her supportive friends who would like it back in spades.

The entire absurd world of fashion is fueled by indecision and fickleness that creates a need for change in viewing environments (paint this room, paper that, get a new lamp etc etc).

These things tend to be exclusive to women and gay men. I suppose it will get better eventually.

Anyway, we can all agree that women are very sensitive about their appearance. I remeber this one time I told a lady friend, in a kind way, that she should cut down the chocolate a bit and lose a few extra pounds.

It was like an interdimensional portal straight to Hell itself had opened. "@sshole" and "loser" were the kindest words I heard in that particular ocasion.

And she'll NEVER forget it. Oh, by the way, the 50,000 times you told her she looked great just got all cancelled out, FOREVER!

funny how that works.

asked the wife yesterday if our son has a similar pair of shorts to the ones she was wearing. I knew as soon as it left my mouth i was in for it. 'So i'm wearing little boy shorts?' is what she said.

And then some women are simply insane. A few are just borderline. Not crazy but mos def "uncomfortable for everybody else" type insecure.

Years ago I had this co-worker who was a blond cute slightly overweight female. You know the type. The girl who was big in school then worked hard on the treadmill and turned out to be pretty cute. We see these types all the time. But you cannot judge their security on how they look, you must take into consideration what they USED to look like becoz all that drama insecurity was there once and reflex memory can be a motherfukcer.

So I am not fat, not chubby. In school I was on the skinny side. Me and her have opposite body types, but I was always so freaking hot and she was always so cold. And once I made the mistake of saying, "it's weird that I'm always hot when you are always cold". After that we finished whatever we were saying and I went back to work. Ten minutes later my boss is asking me what I could have said to make her run out crying. Like she went home and sh1t. My poor boss of course can't really reprimand me for that but he has to look like he at least cared. I smoothed it over after and made it easy for everyone but in her mind forever after I was the guy who called her fat.
Unbelievable.

The way to deal with women like this is to leave. Escape. RUN!. But if you can't run and you are stuck with a woman like this then the best way to handle it is GENTLY! lol Try not to be genuine in any way and lie about everything they ask that concerns their ego. Never make prolonged eye contact and apologize for all the sh1t you don't do. Then maybe you will survive the experience without being "a giant horrible as$hole".

I'm pretty lucky that way. I only surround myself with sensible women. When there's a problem usually it really is my fault:p

hahah, jesus...an innocent comment strikes the insecurity nerve and sends chubby into shutdown. I'm sure it made for a great meeting story! It's funny to think that a 100-200 years ago chubby women were the beauty standart and that skinny was seem as unhealthy...

And you're right on the money when you say you should leave the nutcases behind - they need to work on their own demons before they can open up and be with someone.

IMO, pointing out to your significant other that they're gaining undesirable weight is also a form of love; you care about her image and her health. And also, call me selfish if you like, but I don't want to marry a cute girl only to have her turn into a mammoth who will greet me with her fat trembling inside her sweatpants when I get home after a day of work. Life's too short and I want to enjoy the good things while I can ;)

The thing is I liked her. She was cool. We were 100% Platonic and I had no interest in anything more than that and I think she felt the same. She was cute. She had a boyfriend who was a good looking nice guy even if he was a bit of a preppy douche, he was good for her. She had no reason to be so insecure. Despite the fact that I could never really believe any apology for wrongdoing I honestly did want to make it better and put it behind us. I did the best I could but we were never the same again. Before we were chummy, after she was "cordial" and "nice", if you know what I mean lol. Too bad. I never meant to be involved in highschool regression work drama. I never meant to make her feel bad, but no matter how many tears and glares I can't make myself believe I did anything wrong. I am willing to admit that I didn't take into account her MASSIVE insecurity before I made a normal comment. That's bout it tho.

I still don't understand why she was always so cold. Must've had bad circulation. She ran and exercised. In her defense she did have a job that involved 8 hours of standing but not much walking. But still, I would be sweating and she would be layering up and fukcing with the thermostat.

But then she probably secretly loathed me the way half my girlfriends have because I have the body type where I have to eat bad and sit for a month to get rid of the six pack. I'm not a buff guy or anything. I just have and always have had a very low body fat ratio. It pis$es some women off to watch you eat all the things they want to eat and not gain a pound. My battle is the opposite. I have to try if I want to gain weight. Like most things, it's a double edged sword. Grass is always greener.... right....

Traffic concerns kick Hooters martial arts events, Suski used car sale to the curb in Flint Township (http://www.mlive.com/news/flint/index.ssf/2012/05/flint_township_board_declines.html)

FLINT TOWNSHIP, MI -- Traffic and security concerns have caused Flint Township officials to reject the requests of two businesses that hoped to hold special events along the busy Miller Road commercial corridor.
http://media.mlive.com/newsnow_impact/photo/hootersrestaurantjpg-5c471b25ab9c2eb1.jpg
The Flint Township board recently rejected a request to hold an MMA event at the Hooters restaurant on Miller Road. The board cited safety concerns due to traffic as part of the reason for the rejection.

The most recent decision came when trustees voted 4-3 to deny an application for an outdoor event and tent sale at the Miller Road Hooters Restaurant, which sought to host an Iron Cage Extreme mixed martial arts competition.

Organizers wanted to hold competitions and sell beer in the parking lot of the restaurant during separate events in May, June, July, August and September.

“They did make a presentation and it was an effective presentation,” said Kasle, who voted against the proposed event. “I think the concern of most of the people who voted no is a safety issue.”

With a busy intersection, an estimated crowd of 1,500 people and fencing cordoning off a hexagonal cage for bouts, Kasle said, “It was really a safety concern.”

“The people from Hooters who presented the request concentrated on the security they were going to have during the event, which concerned me a little,” he said.

The proposal included a list of 18 people to work security detail.

Treasurer Sandra Wright raised the issue of a shuttle service proposed from the Genesee Valley Center to the restaurant and back for attendees, questioning if the mall would want attendees taken back to their vehicles after they may have been drinking alcohol.

Supervisor Karyn Miller, who voted in favor of the event, said discussions have taken place with organizers about returning with an adjusted attendance figure of 500 to 750.

“I think they are going to come back. Cut that (1,500) in half and I think they’d be all right,” she said.

Event organizers could not be reached for comment.

Breastaurants Rub against Each Other in Legal Catfight (http://www.jdjournal.com/2012/05/07/breastaurants-rub-against-each-other-in-legal-catfight/)

A legal fight between major “breastaurants” Hooters of America LLC and La Cima Restaurants LLC made an out of the court settlement over the lawsuit filed by Hooters that claimed Joseph Hummel of La Cima for downloading confidential and proprietary company information. There was no certainty about the “confidential and proprietary” stuff, but La Cima chief and former Hooters CEO Coby Brooks has announced plans for 35 Twin Peaks Restaurants.

Hooters claimed that it had secured “the return and/or destruction of all its misappropriated information.” However, La Cima issued a press release saying that it was allowing Hooters to “walk away” without any compensation and that Hooters had “conceded” its claim lacked supportive evidence.

Mr. Brooks of La Cima told the media “La Cima has never had any intention of using any Hooters information.” He said that the executives in La Cima “have over 117 years of combined Hooters restaurant experience. We don’t need their documents; we wrote them.”

Another breastaurant chain called the Tilted Kilt has launched in Arizona and dresses its waitresses in plaid. They are also opening up in Canada.

Hooters has close to 430 restaurants famous for big-breasted “All-American Hooters Girls” waitresses. The former CEO of Hooters, Brooks, left to launch La Cima, and others followed him. La Cima would be opening its first Twin Peaks restaurant in Atlanta in July.

The Twin Peaks chain has the slogan “Eats, Drinks, Scenic Views,” and is famous for scantily clad waitresses having big bosoms. Though much smaller in size than Hooters (the size of business) Twin Peaks is gaining popularity with the slogan that its business “is about you, ‘cause you’re the man!’”

Hooters filed the suit when Hummel left Hooters and joined La Cima as its chief operating officer.
You just gotta wonder what kind of proprietary info this might have been about. I mean it's not like breastaurants are rocket science. Busty waitresses in skimpy outfits - how hard is that to understand?

At Colorado burger joint, waitresses pack heat (http://www.foxnews.com/us/2014/07/02/waitresses-pack-heat-at-colorado-burger-joint/)

At Shooters Grill, in Rifle, Colo., the waitresses take orders and pack heat.

It's called Shooters Grill and it is located in Rifle, Colo., so naturally, the waitresses pack heat.

The burger joint, about 180 miles west of Denver, embraces the firearms theme with menu items like the "M16 burrito," "Smith & Wesson Grilled Cheese" and "Locked and Loaded Nachos." The salt and pepper shakers are made from shotgun shells. But the biggest Second Amendment statement is in the guns waitresses carry, including the Rueger Blackhawk .357 Ashlee Saenz sports.

"No one has ever turned around and walked out because they saw a gun."
- Lauren Boebert, owner of Shooters Grill

Owner Lauren Boebert, 27, started the trend when she began carrying a pistol shortly after opening the restaurant a year ago.

"I started open-carrying maybe a month after we opened just because I am a woman in business and I was there early hours and late nights," Boebert said. "There was a man beaten to death in the alley behind my restaurant last year. It was very unfortunate."

The accessorizing caught on with the staff. But even though carrying a gun openly is legal in Colorado, Boebert nonetheless makes staffers who want to pack take an extra safety course.

Customers don't feel threatened by their servers carrying guns, she said.

"No one has ever turned around and walked out because they saw a gun," Boebert said. "They might have left because it was too crowded, praise the Lord. But not over the guns."

Chef Matt Archambault said word of the gun-toting wait staff has brought in new customers in recent months, but it is the half-pound burgers that keep people coming back.

“Burgers are a staple of the restaurant," he told FoxNews.com. “It’s pretty much an all-American place. We love anyone who wants to come in.”

And Archambault does not carry a gun back in the kitchen.

"We have knives and spatulas," he laughed. "That's how I roll."

The breastaurant has met its male match.

An all-male Hooters inspired restaurant, which will probably have an endless supply of franks and beans jokes, is planning to open next month in Dallas.

The eatery named Tallywackers, which will include alcohol and 6-packs, could open in the city’s gayborhood section on May 9, owner Rodney Duke told the Kidd Krad**** Morning Show Wednesday.

Duke told the hosts he has pondered for 10 years why there wasn't a male equivalent of this type of breastaurant eatery where women are dressed in skimpy and revealing clothing.

"I just decided one day 'let's just do it,'" he said. "There's not anything like it anywhere and sure enough here we are opening next month."

Tallywackers/Facebook
A Dallas restaurant called Tallywackers promises to be a male version of Hooters.

The restaurant will hire attractive men with pleasing physiques, but will make some modifications from the business plan of places like Hooters that cater to a limited adult male audience.

Besides the male employee, one area that will set them apart will be the menu, which will include comfort food, pasta and even a kids' menu "just in case."

Customers who walk in will also be able to choose which servers' section they want to sit. And along with major sporting events they will have parties for happenings like the Academy Awards.

The company has placed advertisements on its Facebook page featuring shirtless models but the attire for the employees is still being designed, Duke said. It will probably include a tight red T-shirt and boxer-briefs, he said. Shirtless would not work because chest hair is against the health code, he said.

"We want to hire a wide variety of men," he said. "Everyone has a different type."

Duke dodged some of the easy jokes like if the business had a firm opening or would serve cucumber salad, but admitted there is a spicy burger on the menu named "the flamer."

"The establishment will be a fun, respectable environment — of course with a little eye candy," Tallywackers spokesman Winston Lackey told the Daily News.

The word tallywackers originates from the employee whose job it was to count cattle when it was herded into the pen, Lackey said. But now the word is used as slang for the male sexual organ, which Lackey declined to comment on.

There has been a lot of anticipation for the eatery to open and Lackey said he expects a diverse group of people will be checking everything out when it opens.

"We've had all walks of life interested and we will welcome them all," he said.

Leaked Memo Reveals What ‘Breastaurants’ Actually Think Of Their Customers (http://thinkprogress.org/health/2015/05/19/3660516/twin-peaks-internal-memo/)

Popularly known as “breastaurants,” the franchises that cater to the male gaze by employing scantily clad waitresses are enjoying booming business even as the rest of the restaurant industry has been struggling. Case in point: Twin Peaks, a Texas-based chain that was founded in 2005 to provide an even racier alternative to the ubiquitous Hooters franchise, was the fastest-growing restaurant chain in the U.S. in 2013.

Twin Peaks attributes its success to a basic understanding of the sexes. “Men are simple creatures and so you don’t have to get too crazy to get them in the door,” Kristen Colby, the director of marketing for Twin Peaks franchise, told the Huffington Post earlier this year. She said that beer, sports, and beautiful women are all it takes.

An internal branding memo provided to ThinkProgress from a current employee at a Twin Peaks restaurant, who preferred to remain anonymous over fears about losing their job, backs up that claim. That employee said the memo was distributed to all the franchises nationwide, as well as handed out to waitresses.
According to the document, the restaurant wants to target guys “who love to have their ego stroked by beautiful girls,” and promises to provide an environment “that feeds their ego with the attention they crave.” They describe their typical customer as someone who likes “attention from beautiful girls and being recognized in front of the guys,” as well as someone who doesn’t want to be asked what he’s thinking:

http://d35brb9zkkbdsd.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/twin-peaks-memo.jpg
An internal brand memo from Twin Peaks

Spokespeople for Twin Peaks did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

So-called “breastaurants” spark a lot of controversy for what many critics complain amounts to the objectification of women. Twin Peaks’ CEO, Randy DeWitt, refers to his female employees as “weapons of mass distraction.” The waitresses employed at Twin Peaks are given discounts at gyms, nail salons, and tanning salons, as well as a “diet menu” to help them avoid gaining any weight. Some of its locations hold “lingerie weeks” during which waitresses don their lacy underwear.

But the restaurant chain’s internal memo aimed at “guys-guys” is a reminder that deeply entrenched gender roles can also impact men. In a society where men are assumed to be “simple creatures” who never want to talk about what they’re thinking or feeling, there isn’t a lot of room for more nuanced explorations of masculinity — something that researchers confirm has demonstrably negative consequences for men’s health.

Twin Peaks has recently been in the news because one of the franchise’s restaurants was the site of a shoot-out among rival biker gangs in Waco, Texas that resulted in nine deaths, the recovery of about 100 weapons, and 170 arrests. In the aftermath of the violence, the restaurant has come under some scrutiny for hosting “Bike Nights” that attract large numbers of bikers from different gangs.

A Twin Peaks spokesperson confirmed this week that its Waco location will be permanently closed, and its other restaurants will be discouraged from offering Bike Nights. “We are in the people business, and the safety of the employees and guests in our restaurants is priority one,” the company’s corporate office said in a statement.

Clearly the managers of Tilted Kilt don't understand kilts at all.

Orlando Breastaurant Rejects Woman For Being 'Too Muscular' (http://jezebel.com/orlando-breastaurant-rejects-woman-for-being-too-muscul-1707520370)

Victoria Smith is a 29-year-old fitness addict, an enthusiastic amateur body builder who’s getting ready to start a job as a flight attendant later this summer. In the meantime, to earn a little extra cash, she applied at the Orlando location of the breastaurant chain The Tilted Kilt, where she says she was rejected because her legs were “too muscular.” This is legal! Completely gross, but legal.

Smith tells Jezebel she went into the Tilted Kilt for three rounds of interviews last week. The first was brief but went well, she says, and she was asked back to try on the Tilted Kilt uniform, a short plaid kilt paired with an equally short white top. For her second interview, she met with assistant manager Samantha Mosca, where she modeled the kilt. In the third round, she met with both Mosca and general manager Scott Gasiorowski.

Smith tried on a medium-sized kilt, but Gasiorowski noticed that it had no button on it. He handed her a small and asked her to change. A Kilt employee helped her change in the bathroom, wished her luck, and, to paraphrase what Smith told Jezebel, predicted confidently that with her breasts, she’d probably get the job easily. But the skirt was tiny, Smith says. She posed for a selfie in it while she was in the Kilt’s bathroom:

Went for a second audition for a job and the general manager told me that my legs are too muscular for the skirt fitting. Shame. I'm not going to stop #lifting.

9 likes 0 comments

“I was like, ‘This looks too short, it doesn’t look like I can bend at all,” she says. Gasiorowski, she says, told her when she came out of the bathroom that the length was “fine,” but the way the skirt hung over her hips and legs was all wrong.

“Because it’s a kilt, it has to be straight down,” he said, according to Smith. “It can’t flare out around your hips. It has to hang straight.”

After that, Smith adds, he stared at her legs for a moment, then added, “What sports do you do? Softball?”

Smith replied, with a smile, that she body-builds. Gasiorowski, she says, responded, “Oh yeah, your legs are probably pushing the skirt out. You’re muscular. OK.”

Gasiorowski, she says, “kept emphasizing the legs: ‘You’ve got a great body, but your legs?’” Finally, he told her she was “too muscular” to fit into the skirt, adding that it was “company policy” that it had to hang in a certain way, adding that the fit of the kilt mattered “over personality.”

Smith replied that she was in the process of “shredding” — building muscle and burning fat — and Gasiorowski told her to “come back in 30 days when you’ve lost the weight.”

“It was like a big slap in my face,” Smith says. “There’s no way I can be losing any fat on my legs. They’re all muscle. The only part I would be losing would be – it’s just back and front and in my tummy area. It was just completely insane what I’m hearing.”

At some point in the interview, Smith says, the two managers also showed her a “diagram” of the “perfect” Tilted Kilt Girl, who as far she could see was thin and didn’t have any visible tattoos. Then the interview was over.

“I didn’t even get to talk about my bubbly personality,” she says, a little sadly. She changed into her own clothes and came out to thank them for the interview opportunity, but both Mosca and Gasiorowski had already left.

Gasiorowski didn’t respond to requests for Jezebel’s requests for comment, which we left by phone, email, or Facebook message. Mosca, too, declined to comment. However, she previously spoke to Gawker writer Adam Weinstein, who worked on this story before passing it to us.

To Weinstein, Mosca confirmed that Smith was rejected for not fitting into the skirt correctly.

“She actually just did not fit the costume right,” she told him. “It has to go straight down.” She added: “She tried on the loosest one and that didn’t work out. She tried on the next loosest one and it didn’t work out. She tried on the tightest one and it didn’t work out. She just didn’t fit with the costume.”

“This is corporate policy, and that’s really all I have to say,” Mosca added. Weinstein says she also invited him to return with Smith to demonstrate the ways in which the skirt didn’t “work” on her body.

As a chain, Tilted Kilt employees actually seem to have a wide range of body types. Looking through Facebook photos of employees at various locations, I saw piercings, tattoos and curves, which the “perfect girl” diagram Smith says Mosca showed her would seem to prohibit.

At the same time, it’s perfectly legal for the Tilted Kilt to refuse to employ someone for being too muscular, or too skinny, or for any bad and insulting reason at all. That’s been pretty well-settled in a number of lawsuits against Hooters and against the Borgata Casino. In both cases, a judge ruled that it was legal to fire waitresses for gaining weight (in the Borgata case, the judge actually ruled that the waitresses are “akin to ‘sex objects’”). Hooters also previously fired a waitress after she was beaten up by her boyfriend and was too visibly injured to work.

Smith got into bodybuilding because she was suffering from PTSD, depression and anxiety. She’s trying to keep the incident in perspective, but says it was “humiliating.”

“Is it intimidating or something?” she asks. “A woman’s who’s strong, intelligent and muscular? That’s too much for men now?”

The restaurant is located in the Tiexi district of Shenyang and specializes in congee, hot rice porridge that would probably really burn if it were spilled down the front of one's unclothed body.

Hulk Hogan’s Tampa Breastaurant ‘Hogan’s Beach’ Has Closed Its Doors, To The Surprise Of No One (http://uproxx.com/prowrestling/2015/10/hulk-hogan-hogans-beach-closed/)

What’s a restaurant gonna do when a sex tape racism scandal and its namesake’s unsalvageable public image run wild on it?

According to multiple sources, disgraced WWE legend Hulk Hogan’s Tampa breastaurant Hogan’s Beach has closed its doors after two and a half years of business. Let’s check the eatery’s official website for more information:
Hogan's Beach closed

https://uproxx.files.wordpress.com/2015/10/hogans-beach-closed.png?w=650
Via hogansbeachtampa.com

At least Hulk has those Pastamania! franchises to fall back on.

The restaurant opened in the final days of 2012 with this quote, which would become prophetic:

“It’s going to be Jimmy Buffett’s [Margaritaville] times 10; Hooters times 10. It’s a logical extension of the Hogan brand, with my image and likeness.”

In 2014, the restaurant’s dress code went viral for such instructions as “no baggy pants” and “no sideways hats.” People then began to notice that there weren’t any black people in the Hogan’s Beach commercials. Funny how things come together after a while, huh?

The other notable incidents in Hogan’s Beach history include that time a lady stole an expensive wrestling shoe from the gift shop before it could be auctioned off for charity, and the saddest Labor Day rave you’ve ever seen.

We wish the staff of Hogan’s Beach the best in their future endeavors, and hope somebody remembered to give Jimmy Hart a ride home.

Didn't even know this one existed. An image search of Hogan's beach turns up a lot of photos of a shirtless Hogan, but not a lot of the waitresses.

LOOK: Shenyang restaurant hires topless models to serve its hungry customers (http://shanghaiist.com/2015/11/02/topless_waitresses.php)

http://shanghaiist.com/attachments/alexlinder/half_naked_waitress4.jpg

The Shenyang restaurant industry simply continues to innovate. After one congee restaurant made headlines over the summer with bikini-clad waitresses, another establishment seems to have decided that less is definitely more by hiring topless models as waitresses.

http://shanghaiist.com/attachments/alexlinder/half_naked_waitress2.jpg
http://shanghaiist.com/attachments/alexlinder/half_naked_waitress3.jpg

The women are clad only in body paint, bikini bottoms and nipple covers. At least mostly nipple covers as some of the women's breasts don't seem to have made it past Chinese online media censors' stringent inspection.

http://shanghaiist.com/attachments/alexlinder/half_naked_waitress5.jpg
http://shanghaiist.com/attachments/alexlinder/half_naked_waitress6.jpg

However, don't go rushing off to Shenyang just yet. It turns out that local reports say that this was only a promotional event for Halloween to draw some extra eaters and the restaurant has now returned to its usual boring, clothed serving staff.

Guess it's back to sitting in front of vacuum cleaners for the topless models.

...there must be a Chinese name for these bikini bars akin to our American term 'breastaurants'. Anyone know?

To help out lonely 'bare branches' during Singles' Day, bar invites guests to give bikini babe in kiddie pool a 'beer bath'
http://shanghaiist.com/attachments/alexlinder/bar_pool1.jpg

Unless you happen to be an Alibaba exec, Singles' Day can be a tough time in China, especially if you are one of those unfortunate "bare branches" with no one to give you a back rub or snap your *****.

http://shanghaiist.com/attachments/alexlinder/bar_pool4.jpg
http://shanghaiist.com/attachments/alexlinder/bar_pool5.jpg

For the benefit of all the lonely singles, a bar in Shenyang brought in a babe wearing a bikini and had her dance around in a brightly-colored kiddie pool just beside the bar counter. Instead of drinking down their sorrows, guests were encouraged to pour their alcohol on to the woman to remind themselves of the benefits of being single.

http://shanghaiist.com/attachments/alexlinder/bar_pool6.jpg
http://shanghaiist.com/attachments/alexlinder/bar_pool2.jpg

While some guests seem more enthralled by a CBA game going on in the background and others just awkwardly horrified, some guys cut back and snapped some photos they can use to blackmail their buddies.

http://shanghaiist.com/attachments/alexlinder/bar_pool3.jpg
http://shanghaiist.com/attachments/alexlinder/bar_pool7.jpg

This is yet another reminder that if you want to be served food or drinks by a nearly naked woman then Shenyang is the city for you, just as long as you don't mind a little something extra in your air.

Bikini models dressed in Peking opera headgear cause a stir at hotpot banquet in Anhui (http://shanghaiist.com/2015/11/22/bikini_models_hefei_free_hotpot.php)

http://shanghaiist.com/upload/2015/11/hotpot-festival-bikini-models-1.JPG

A team of bikini models who showed up to avail themselves of the free food on offer at the first Eastern China Hotpot Banquet in Hefei turned more than just a few heads.

http://shanghaiist.com/upload/2015/11/hotpot-festival-bikini-models-61.JPG

The hotpot festival began at 6:20 p.m. last night at the city's Binhu district, offering residents of Hefei free hotpot for its two hour duration.

http://shanghaiist.com/upload/2015/11/hotpot-festival-bikini-models-31.JPG

According to NetEase, the offer of free hotpot was too enticing for some, with thousands of residents descending on the venue for the chance to grab a meal on the house.

This group of bikini models, partially clad in Peking opera headdress, who were performing at a nearby exhibition just happened to stop by and grab a free meal before the show, lending no small amount of publicity to the proceedings.

Chinese media is celebrating the hosting of the country's first "breast model championships" which took place last month in Hubei province, publishing a set of photos which show the winner being fawned on by her fans at a car show in Jiangsu province.

Jiang Qing, a girl from Nanjing who happens to share a name with Mao's fourth wife and leader of the Gang of Four, won the contest held on October 25 in Xiangyang city with her 34F bust.

http://shanghaiist.com/upload/2015/11/breast-model-championship-5.jpg
Since being declared the national winner of the contest, Jiang has forged a career for herself as a model. This weekend she was photographed at the Huai'an city car show, surrounded by a number of enthusiastic fans who look positively captivated by her bosom.

The news will no doubt come as comfort to the models made jobless after Shanghai Auto, arguably the country's most prestigious car show, banned showroom models from this years exhibition. There's still plenty of work out there for those who want it!

Hooters opening gaming bar in Tokyo in partnership with video game company Namco (http://en.rocketnews24.com/2015/12/08/hooters-opening-gaming-bar-in-tokyo-in-partnership-with-video-game-company-namco/)

Companies collaborating to earn all of the disposable income from 20 and 30-something males in Japan.

Asked to complete a checklist of their interests, just about any young man could put a mark next to “beer,” “breasts,” or “video games,” and many would be asking where the “all of the above” option is. So perhaps it was inevitable that Namco, one of Japan’s biggest video game companies, would eventually partner with Hooters, the American restaurant chain with busty waitresses and five locations in Japan.

This month, the companies are opening a new joint venture called Gaming Bar Side-B. Located on the premises of Hooters’ branch in Tokyo’s Shibuya neighborhood, Gaming Bar Side-B is being billed as an “interactive sports bar.” Along with drinks and light fare, including Hooters’ signature chicken wings, Gaming Bar Side-B will have video games, foosball, slot car racing, and Pop-A-Shot-style basketball shooting games. In addition to 18 different gaming stations, customers can watch sports being televised on screens mounted around the facility.

https://sociorocketnewsen.files.wordpress.com/2015/12/hn-3.png?w=580&h=404

The aesthetic is described as “downtown New York,” which in this case seems to mean concrete floors, chain-link, and comfy sofas, at least judging from artist renditions.

https://sociorocketnewsen.files.wordpress.com/2015/12/hn-2.png?w=580&h=414

Namco has announced that the facility will offer all-you-can-drink-and-play packages for 1,500 yen (US$12.50) for the first 30 minutes, with 30-minute extensions available for an additional 500 yen, which represents a decent value as long as you’re drinking and gaming at a brisk pace.

Gaming Bar Side-B opens December 18.

The kicker here is that Spokane has good coffee.

Would You Buy Your Coffee From A Topless Barista? (http://uproxx.com/life/topless-baristas-spokane-wshington/)
BY: MARK SHRAYBER 01.18.16

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlyFh97zy7M

Good news for all of you living in Washington State. If you haven’t already planned a trip to Spokane, you may just want to take a drive out there. Not just for the beautiful scenery that the Pacific Northwest affords, but for the topless men and women who are serving coffee in drive-thrus across the city. They’re not going to get dirty with you, but as Food Beast points out, those looking for their morning caffeine fix might also just get a little “boobie action.”

This “boobie action” is the subject of a new video by Zagat (up top) that looks at the growing trend of topless (and sometimes bottomless) baristas and how they’re affecting the areas they live and work in. Is it controversial when a woman serves you a latte while wearing pasties? Absolutely. Are they also making more money than ever before? You bet! And in a world where a Starbucks with fully-clothed coffee artists lurks on every corner, can you really blame businesses that are trying to survive for trying out novel ways of attracting customers?

Of course, there are the children to consider. As a mom profiled in the video points out, her child was flummoxed after seeing breasts on parade in public one Christmas Eve. How, she wonders, would she explain all that cleavage to her kids? Personally, we’re more concerned about someone in a cold climate going bare-chested during the holidays and catching their death-of-cold.

Currently, Food Beast points out that that the “bikini baristas” are winning the fight to ban nudity. Now, everyone’s just waiting for the bigger chains to jump in.

Chile's Racy Coffee Shops: Making Hooters Look Tame (http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2011/01/chiles-racy-coffee-shops-making-hooters-look-tame/68416/)
TEJAL RAO JAN 3, 2011 HEALTH

http://cdn.theatlantic.com/static/mt/assets/food/Rao_Cafe_12-22_post.jpg

Two minutes ago, I was in front of the Palacio de la Moneda, in Santiago, Chile, standing in the sun with well-fed stray dogs, looking for the window of President Salvador Allende's office, where he died in 1973. Now I'm in a dark room surrounded by women in glow-in-the-dark thongs and the smoke's so heavy I can hardly breathe. I'm in a tunneled strip mall in the city center, in an unnamed coffee shop marked with a single sign: abierto. Open.

My waitress's white g-string glows in the black light. Her stockings too, which reach up her thighs and connect via a proper six-strap garter belt. As she leans over to serve the suits on the other side of the room, she casually gives my side of the horseshoe bar a view of her bare bottom. Then she greets me formally, with two kisses, and asks me how I am, as if we were old friends.

This is a particularly saucy café con piernas, a type of coffee shop in Santiago where the waitresses wear skimpy outfits (the name translates to "coffee with legs"). These coffee shops are a Chilean cultural phenomenon, varying in degrees of nudity. They don't serve alcohol and they maintain coffee shop hours, closing around 8 or 9 in the evening. At some, the waitresses look like dreamy flight attendants—tight, red shift dresses down to their knees. At others, the windows are blacked out, the walls mirrored, and the waitresses wear little more than underthings.

There's a dominatrix in a black pleather and lace two-piece upstairs and she's carrying a tray of stacked espresso cups and saucers, grinning. And there's a 20-something schoolgirl in knee socks and tartan knickers, bringing coffee and sparkling water to a group of businessmen. It's 4 o' clock on a Friday and these guys have clearly come straight from the office. Most of them aren't actually staring at the women; they're standing at the bar, talking to each other, lighting cigarettes and slim cigars. They're done for the day.

"Do you need sugar?" my waitress asks when she turns back, and she's got a squeeze-tube of simple syrup in her hand.

She says her name is Candy, points to her gold necklace to show that it's short for Candida. She's 21, has worked here a few months, and loves her job. The money and the hours are decent. And the men—she's surprised that I ask—don't give her any trouble. She's a student at a local college, studying physical education. She wants to become a personal trainer.

By the time I leave, I'm dizzy from the smoke, the flashing tile floors, and the infinite reflections of smooth, tanned bottoms on the mirrored walls. I never want to hear Rihanna again.

"How was the coffee?" my Chilean friend asks.

Hey, the coffee was actually pretty good!

"They are some of the best places for coffee around here," my friend says. "Is there somewhere that compares in America?"

As we walk down a beautiful cobbled street, the spindrift of a plaza fountain catches the light and tiny rainbows chisel away at the church facade. I find myself hollering, "Oh yeah, Hooters!"

Though there was until recently a Hooters in Santiago, my friend never went. I explain its cultural significance: In Atlanta, I say, as the boys turned 18, off they went to Hooters, to officiate their manhood with deep-fried chicken wings and fried pickles. It became their tradition.

"And the wings at Hooters, they're actually pretty good."

"International business strategy," shrugs my friend. "You go for the girls but you stay for the coffee. Or is it the other way around?"

Shandong food street hires scantily-clad model to sell its snacks (http://shanghaiist.com/2016/03/08/sexy_snack_street_promotion.php)

http://shanghaiist.com/upload/2016/03/snackmodel1.jpg

Last Friday in Weifang city, Shandong province, photographers took a few eye-catching snapshots of a skimpy model posing around a traditional snack street. It seems the proprietors are trying out a novel new way of selling their goods.

After all, whose appetite wouldn't be influenced by Spicy soup hottie, Steamed bun hottie or Mantou hottie?

Netizens have unfortunately injected the photo shoot with a bit of harsh realism in a few well-aimed comments.

"This bull**** photographer is corrupting Shandong's image," reads one comment on Kuaibao.
"The girl is so ugly, seeing her I can't even swallow my food," another added. Yikes.

Bombshells, the military themed sports bar chain, announced this week plans to open a fourth Houston-area location on U.S. 290 near Blalock.
When it opens in later this year, it will be the sixth Bombshells location for RCI Hospitality, the Texas-based leader in gentleman's clubs and sports bars.
Surrounded by flat screen TVs, the Bombshell Girls wear military-inspired uniforms and serve manly portions of comfort fare.
What sets Bombshells apart from other "breastaurants" is its emphasis on live music. Big outdoor patios provide the stage for local bands.

Half-naked models cause quite the stir by showing off their painted breasts at Shanghai bike expo (http://shanghaiist.com/2016/07/12/shanghai_bike_show_models.php)

http://shanghaiist.com/attachments/shang_shanghaiist/car_models4.jpg

The 26th China International Bicycle and Motor Fair was held at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai last weekend, but for some reason everyone seemed much more focused on the half-naked models with painted boobs, rather than the actual exhibition itself.
A series of photos featuring three of the models undressing at the expo have surfaced online, prompting some heated discussion among netizens. While changing outfits, one of the models attempted to cover herself by holding a blanket in front of her chest. Meanwhile, another model simply stood with her bare back to the crowd, while a group of overly-curious onlookers snapped pictures.

http://shanghaiist.com/attachments/shang_shanghaiist/car_models1.jpg
http://shanghaiist.com/attachments/shang_shanghaiist/car_models2.jpg

Later, the models were also seen roaming around the exhibition half-naked, with just a layer of paint concealing their breasts. It turns out that painted boobies don't only work for selling cars, but bikes as well.

Of course, last year, Shanghai Auto Show organizers banned half-naked models from its high-class event, hoping to redirect people's attention to the real star of the show, the cars. The bike expo seems to be taking a different route.

What does changing outfits mean in the context of painted boobs? Repainting?

Hooters Hong Kong: not a ‘breastaurant’ (http://www.marketing-interactive.com/hooters-hong-kong-not-a-breastaurant/)

When Hooters Hong Kong announced its opening early last week on Facebook with this hashtag – “#weareopen”! – its Facebook fans, especially those who had been staying attentive to its updates, almost instantly tagged their friends to alert each other about the opening.

With no billboard advertisements, no outdoor campaigns, the Facebook announcement alone attracted queues outside its Central outlet every day in the first week of operations.

The American restaurant chain, best-known for the appealing and buxom female servers in skimpy outfits, has had more than 7,000 fans “like” its official page on social media by sharing photos of its eye-catching hooters girls since it established the account last year.

http://images.marketing-interactive.com.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/hooter3-700x339.jpg

However, Mike Warde, general manager of Hooters Hong Kong, would rather credit all the attention it has had to the “international positioning” the restaurant has established.

“The high-standard product and service that we are offering is what raises the customers’ expectations,” he told Marketing.

He said social media was so far the only promotional channel, but new campaigns were underway. In an interview with the South China Morning Post, he insisted Hooters is not a “breastaurant”, but “a family-oriented, fun-loving, entertainment outlet”.

Well, apparently we all focus on the chicken wings.

Three weeks ago, the brand invited local media to its launch event, encouraging them to alert their readers with live recordings of the hooters girls’ dances, which in turn, successfully stirred up hot discussions on online forums.

As videos of dancing Hooters girls went viral on the web, people have been clinging to the restaurant’s opening date; and the announcement made last week was met with much excitement from its fans.

Hooters Hong Kong will be one of 30 branches that Bangkok-based Destinations Resorts will be bringing to Asia on behalf of Hooters Asia. Other outlets include the Philippines, Phnom Penh and Singapore.

Warde acts as if breastaurants are a bad thing.

Not a breastaurant. A breastaurjewelrystore.

Jewelry Store Under Fire After Making Worker Sell Diamonds Topless (http://nextshark.com/jewelry-store-fire-making-worker-sell-diamonds-topless/)

A jewelry store in China is getting flak for letting one of its attendants go naked in the name of sales.

http://cdn.nextshark.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/1-172.jpg

The clip uploaded to ku6.com shows a half-naked saleslady standing before the store’s goods. She was wearing a pair of diamond-shaped nipple pasties and what looked like an improvised skirt.

http://cdn.nextshark.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/2-105.jpg

The scene got even more awkward when the lady realized she was being filmed.

Netizens were outraged at the company, Chow Luk Fook, for having the employee pull such a stunt. Meanwhile, others joked asking whether all store branches offered such a sight.

http://cdn.nextshark.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/3-67.jpg

Commenters at Facebook expressed:

“Cheap.”

“The shop owner should be ashamed.”

“So pathetic. Its [shop] sales are so poor that it can’t even afford buying uniforms for staff.”

http://cdn.nextshark.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/4-42.jpg

Yet this was not the first time Chow Luk Fook has allowed this kind of promotion, Apple Daily said. One Shenzhen store that opened in November 2013 had half-naked models whose bodies were painted.

The company operates in Hong Kong and mainland China.

Bombshells: We’re not a ‘breastaurant’ (http://nypost.com/2016/12/27/bombshells-flack-were-not-a-breastaurant/)
By Lisa Fickenscher December 27, 2016 | 9:47am | Updated

Bombshells wants to bust out.

Management of the four-unit Houston-based restaurant and bar wants to take its military-themed concept — and its scantily clad waitresses and ice-cold beer — on a cross-country tear that could result in as many as 100 new franchised locations opening in the next five years.

The timing of the move would appear to be perfect.

While revenue of Bombshells grew 6 percent in the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, it spiked 10.5 percent in the fourth quarter.

The momentum appears to have shareholders upbeat.

Shares of RCI Hospitality, which owns Bombshells as well as a host of adult-friendly nightclubs and cabarets, have increased nearly 40 percent since the presidential election through Dec. 23, to $15.95.

This is all good news for RCI brass — but don’t start referring to their Bombshells chain as just another so-called “breastaurant,” the name for a burger and beer joint with scantily clad waitresses, like Twin Peaks and Hooters.

Management would rather you think of the family-friendly Dave & Buster’s as their inspiration — never mind the ammo belts hanging from its servers’ shoulders and the cleavage-baring zippered tops.

“It is not a so-called ‘breastaurant,’ ” insisted spokesman Gary Fishman.

OK, we won’t mention that the staff is encouraged to sidle up to customers or that they have to sign an employment contract that allows the restaurant to say what lipstick colors are acceptable and require them to wear their hair down.

To be sure, the WWII-themed eatery is trying to tap into the family crowd by hosting Little League gatherings and the like in a way that its breastaurant peers are not, say industry watchers.

“It’s drawing people in at lunch and going all the way to 2 a.m.,” said Frank Camma, a retail analyst at Sidoti, who notes that Bombshells attracts more women than Hooters. “It has cross-appeal.”

RCI Hospitality operates more than 40 gentlemen’s clubs, including jiggle joint Rick’s Cabaret in Manhattan, Jaguars, Tootsies Cabaret and XTC.

Among all the RCI brands, it is the 3-year-old Bombshells that is being groomed for growth.

RCI recently poached Shannon Glaser, a franchising expert from the Twin Peaks chain. Glaser helped her former employer win acclaim as the fastest-growing restaurant chain over the past several years.

At a time when the restaurant industry is experiencing anemic growth and buzz, and phrases like “restaurant recession” have crept into the lexicon, RCI — and Bombshells in particular — seems to be bucking the trend.

“I think overall the election is turning out to be very, very, very positive for us so far,” Bombshells Chief Executive Eric Langan told Wall Street in a recent conference call.

“We think the franchising and growth of this concept will greatly enhance shareholder value, and [we] view Bombshells as a buried ‘gem,’ ” Camma wrote in a report.

The company doesn’t even think those skimpy Bombshells outfits go too far.

“Our uniform is like a cheerleader outfit,” director of operations David Simmons offered.

China is beginning to have some similar issues with obesity like America. This is marketing that might well backfire.

Chinese restaurant gives discounts to women based on their breast size, G-cup gets 65 percent off (http://en.rocketnews24.com/2017/08/09/chinese-restaurant-gives-discounts-to-women-based-on-their-breast-size-g-cup-gets-65-percent-off/)
Scott Wilson 22 hours ago

The Internet had a couple of things to say about this.

China is no stranger to enticing customers to restaurants based on their physical appearance. We’ve seen Chinese restaurants charge people less based on how thin they are and even eat for free if they’re beautiful enough.

And continuing that tradition, one Chinese restaurant named Chaoxia (translated as “Trendy Shrimp”) in Hangzhou City in Zhejian Province recently made news for their own special cost-reduction program: giving discounts to women based on their breast size.

▼ “Someone go with me to eat at Chaoxia lol”

https://sociorocketnewsen.files.wordpress.com/2017/08/breastaurant-01.png
Weibo/四毛1016

It’s a little hard to tell what’s going on in the above image showing the outside of the restaurant, but here’s the breakdown:

A-cup gets 5 percent off
B-cup gets 15 percent off
C-cup gets 25 percent off
D-cup gets 35 percent off
E-cup gets 45 percent off
F-cup gets 55 percent off
G-cup gets 65 percent off

According to the restaurant, the campaign was very successful, and brought in a lot more female customers, with the average discount being 20 percent.

However, as soon as word about the promotion started to spread, the restaurant received negative feedback. Those against the promotion claimed that it was insulting to women, and was even against advertising law in China. The campaign was shut down by authorities after only three days.

Here’s how Chinese netizens reacted online:

“Judging people based on breast size is humiliating. This is vulgar.”
“How awful, putting some at a disadvantage due to their breast size.”
“Yet another brainless restaurant.”
“How did they judge the breast size anyway? With their hands?”

For those also wondering, the “breast size judgment” was performed by female staff at the restaurant, and they used only their eyes to estimate. If the customer disagreed with their assessment, then they could just tell them their breast size. So long as it wasn’t a painfully obvious lie, the restaurant would just accept whatever they said.

While this was all probably little more than a publicity stunt that the restaurant knew would get shut down pretty quickly, it was a pretty successful one at that. It’s probably only a matter of time before we see a restaurant in Japan offering the same thing, seeing as we’ve already gotten Japanese bars that give women discounts for how high their heels are.

Lynne Austin had no idea how much her life would change after she agreed to pose for a billboard advertising a new restaurant opening in Clearwater, Florida.

“I literally started before the restaurant opened,” the 56-year-old told Fox News.

She became the poster girl for Hooters in 1983.

“We were delayed in getting the restaurant opened, so by that time I was pretty broke. Being a young girl, I joined this new venture. I actually cleaned the restaurant equipment for five bucks an hour before we opened.”

Before Austin accepted the opportunity, she was working at a telephone company and modeling on the side. She was spotted by Hooters co-founder Ed Droste at the Miss Jose Cuervo bikini pageant that year, which she won. She accepted Droste’s offer to appear in a new ad for Hooters, not thinking much of it.

“The [Hooters] building -- [there] had been about four awful businesses there,” explained Austin. “I think it was a biker bar at one point and a pizza shop.”

http://a57.foxnews.com/images.foxnews.com/content/fox-news/entertainment/2017/08/18/first-hooters-girl-lynne-austin-looks-back-at-her-success-playboy-playmate-title/_jcr_content/article-text/article-par-6/embed_image/image.img.jpg/612/344/1502988182752.jpg?ve=1&tl=1

Austin was craving something new. She quit her job with the telephone company and worked at Hooters as a waitress. While Hooters was the ideal spot to savor hot wings and cold beer after unwinding at the local beach, it was the American blonde wearing a white tank top and tiny orange shorts that enticed patrons.

“The first time I ever saw the billboard, it was kind of surreal,” Austin recalled. “Like, 'Oh my Lord, there I am, my big ol’ face is up here'… And quickly, they started marketing from there. They did taxi tops. I was on the front of a boat, I was on the side of a delivery truck… I was everywhere. For 15 years I had billboards up… The thrill of being the face never got old. Still doesn’t.”

And the tactic worked. For six years, Austin quickly garnered regulars and fans hoping to be served by the pinup. Word spread that the actual Hooters girl was in the restaurant and it didn’t take long for lines of admirers to form and wait up to three hours.

https://instagram.fsnc1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/t51.2885-15/e15/10004240_1424518294464757_1160224451_n.jpg

“People would send me flowers to the restaurant, they would come in and sit at my table for hours, trying to get my attention,” she said. “A lot of it was very flattering… but I’ve been married for 20 years now so I don’t even remember those kinds of stories! But there were plenty of guys trying to get my attention.

"[But] who doesn’t love that? Who doesn’t love people wanting to see you, be around you, and love your personality? Of course I loved it. I still do! People still come to me and want a picture with me. And I’m always so flattered and grateful that people still care.”

Hooters soon transformed from a casual pit stop into an iconic chain. There are currently more than 420 restaurants in 42 states and 29 countries all serving its winning combo: tasty grub, televised sports, ever-flowing beer and plenty of friendly women. However, some critics have slammed Hooters over the years, accusing the restaurant of exploiting scantily clad women on the job.

https://instagram.fsnc1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/t51.2885-15/e15/11351967_1634537950092617_530452523_n.jpg

Austin doesn’t hesitate to dismiss the allegations.

“I was there from the beginning,” she explained. “We wore running shorts and a tank top and I get it, that’s not the attire of another restaurant. But you saw way more at the beach then you ever saw in our restaurant. We patterned our uniform after one of the owners who was a runner. So we got the runner shorts. And there’s certainly nothing wrong with runners wearing shorts. I’ve never had a problem with it.

"But I’m a beach girl… It’s honestly hard to convince me that there’s anything wrong with our uniform. And we’d had nurses, lawyers, and I think even a judge who were former Hooters girls. Our accomplishments are remarkable. It’s way more than serving wings and wearing shorts. I’m proud of it.”

https://instagram.fsnc1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/t51.2885-15/e15/11326427_1080091485353272_1581801032_n.jpg

Austin also credited Hooters for granting her the flexibility to pursue modeling career on the side.

“There are so many girls pursuing education, modeling, acting, whatever, but they still call Hooters home,” she insisted. “They did that for me also. They worked around my schedule while I was modeling and traveling. But when I was in town, I would pick up a couple of shifts.”

And Austin’s newfound fame led to another title — that of Playboy Playmate in 1986.

https://instagram.fsnc1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/t51.2885-15/e15/11313244_473639556126422_1426011642_n.jpg

“[Hugh Hefner] was very nice,” she said. “A very intelligent man, very well-spoken, very educated -- just a nice man. He was always very polite, a gentleman, and a nice host! But I couldn’t tell you his favorite color. We weren’t that friendly!”

Austin would also go on to guest-star in two episodes of the hit sitcom “Married with Children” in 1989. She also appeared on “Star Search,” and hosted “Hooters Movie of the Week” every Saturday on television for seven years.

Austin also did radio for 18 years. Back in July, she served as one of the judges for the Hooters International Swimsuit Pageant. Currently, the mother of four hosts a podcast and is writing a memoir about her adventures.

“Just about everything I do, Hooters is always my base, my heart,” she said. “Any success I’ve ever had, I always brought them along with me. They were a launching pad for me. And the Hooters girl? She’s an icon. All you need to do is see those orange shorts.”

Even her children are proud of their mother’s accomplishments.

“Oh they love the title of [first Hooters girl],” she said. “Back in elementary school, they would go, ‘Mom! My teacher knows who you are! My teacher loves Hooters… I would totally let my daughter be a Hooters girl if she didn’t have to drive back home at night alone. But if I could drive her there and back? Absolutely.”

Still, don’t expect Austin to slip into her old uniform anytime soon.

“No, I can never do that uniform justice,” she claimed. “That uniform doesn’t need me anymore. There’s too many other girls that could wear it way better than I could.”

Cold drinks and hot women don’t seem to have been enough to keep Hooters well supported, with the American restaurant chain facing eviction from its sole Hong Kong site after failing to pay more than HK$1 million in rent, according to legal documents.
But Hooters Asia – which runs the venue – remained perky about the restaurant’s prospects and insisted it still planned to open four more venues in Hong Kong in the future, despite the sole existing outlet only breaking even for the first time last month.
The landlord of the bar’s Lan Kwai Fong location kicked off legal action against the company on Friday, seeking almost HK$1.13 million in unpaid rent – about three months’ worth.
Lawyers for property management firm Dor Fook Company Limited filed a writ of summons at the High Court on Friday, claiming Hooters had “failed and/or refused” to pay since April despite “repeated demands and requests”.
According to the writ, the landlord wrote a letter to the restaurant at the beginning of last month demanding payment, but Hooters still failed to cough up all the money.
The lawyers want Hooters to leave the property or pay more than HK$371,700 for every month that it remains in it, from September 16.
In April last year Hooters signed a 10-year lease for the Wyndham Street venue, agreeing to pay HK$330,000 per month for the first year, according to the legal document.
Hooters must respond to the writ within two weeks.
Hooters Asia president Daniel Yong, who took over management two months ago, said he was “quite surprised” by the legal action, as he had already discussed repayment with the landlord.

“We are actually quite surprised that this came up, because they have been getting monthly money from us and we have the bills to prove that point,” he said, adding that he planned to have all the outstanding debt paid off in the next two weeks, although he couldn’t confirm the exact figure.
Yong said the former manager resigned from the company earlier this year, leaving a “messy accounting system” and unpaid bills.
“It is a bit of a mess we’re trying to clean up right now,” he said.
The Hong Kong outlet had run at a loss for the first 12 months it was open and only broke even last month, he said.
In 2015, the chain said it was scouting locations for five Hong Kong outlets and, when asked whether the next four proposed restaurants would be going ahead, Yong replied “of course”.
“I’m pretty confident that the business will do well,” he said. “We intend to be in Hong Kong for an extended period of time ... At the end of the day we just want to improve and make more money.”
Yong dismissed the criticisms that the restaurant’s famously scantily-clad women were “old fashioned”, saying people held different opinions.
The restaurant chain attracted controversy when it first opened in Hong Kong last July, with the firm forced onto the defensive over its trademark busty girls in small orange shorts and tank tops.
At the time, Hooters Asia general manager Mike Warde dismissed accusations that breast size was a factor in the hiring process for waitresses, and said the bar was “family oriented” and “fun-loving”.
“We teach the girls to be a lot more respectful of themselves; have more confidence in themselves,” he said.
There are more than 430 Hooters restaurants in 28 countries, according to the Singapore Hooters website.

Chelsea Morgensen is heating things up faster than a plate of wings these days — the reigning 2017 Miss Hooters International is serving up the sizzling 2018 calendar as its new cover girl.

And it’s for a good cause. Since October, $1 from each calendar goes to Give A Hoot, a campaign supporting breast cancer research.

Fox News spoke with the Texas native living in Hollywood about appearing in the latest Hooters calendar, how she was hired by the restaurant and the one talent she loves to show off:

Fox News: Can you describe that moment when you saw yourself on the cover for the first time?

Chelsea Morgensen: My managers first told me I was going to be doing a TV appearance, but instead they were actually surprising me with my cover. The entire restaurant was chanting my name as I came downstairs. I had no idea what was going on. And then they finally showed me the cover… I loved it. I just really loved my picture! I was so excited, the whole restaurant was cheering for me… But it didn’t actually hit me until… I saw the physical, actual calendar. I just thought, ‘Wow, this actually happened.’

https://instagram.fsnc1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/t51.2885-15/s750x750/sh0.08/e35/22352462_176431629589155_6135659445771829248_n.jpg

Fox News: When did you first became involved with Hooters?

Morgensen: I started working for Hooters in April 2015. I was actually just eating at Hooters because I love their wings and thought, ‘You know, I really need a job. I wonder if they’re hiring.’ I asked the Hooters girl there and she said, ‘Yeah! Stop in tomorrow and meet our manager.’ I went in… They pretty much hired me on the spot. It was pretty exciting. I was a bit overwhelmed, but I am glad that I pursued it. It’s been the best job I’ve ever had.

Fox News: How has working at Hooters helped you build self-confidence?

Morgensen: Just having to interact with people every day, especially working in Hollywood, people come from all over the country… I had to open up and talk to everybody. Being outgoing just in the workplace encouraged me to get out more in my regular life.

Fox News: What’s your relationship like with your customers?

Morgensen: In Hollywood, we actually have very few regulars… It’s always new customers. But recently — and I’m so excited about this — I actually created two regulars of my own that now frequent the restaurant, which is really cool!

https://instagram.fsnc1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/t51.2885-15/s750x750/sh0.08/e35/20987513_801406420030617_584754896792715264_n.jpg

My relationships with them are very friendly. We talk about work, travel, careers. I’m modeling and acting now, so they’re always really curious about what that’s like and see how I’m doing… If they’re ever having a down day, I try to turn it around for them. I really like having that familiar face come in. And I hope to create more of them.

Fox News: Have you interacted with any celebrities?

Morgensen: I personally have not that I know of, but there are some celebrities that come in. I know we had a football player one time who came in and ordered one of everything on the entire menu… We do have some celebrities who come in every now and then.

Fox News: Some people believe Hooters depicts women in a negative light. How do you respond to the criticism?

Morgensen: Honestly, I haven’t experienced any incidents of negativity. It has done nothing but empowered me. It has given me so much more confidence. And all the girls that work there are amazing. There are girls going to school to become nurses, become lawyers, to be doctors… I think it’s a great job… It gives you that ability to talk to anybody… I have had nothing, but positive experiences working with Hooters.

https://instagram.fsnc1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/t51.2885-15/s750x750/sh0.08/e35/20687790_1422931257789154_3639659229133930496_n.jp g

Fox News: Are there any misconceptions you feel people have that just aren’t true?

Morgensen: I think a lot of people need to visit Hooters and see it for themselves. Hooters is a great family-oriented restaurant. Families bring their kids all the time and they absolutely love it. They have a blast. So if someone has any misconceptions, they just need to come to Hooters and experience it for themselves.

Fox News: Before Hooters, you were a pageant girl in 2009. What was that like?

Morgensen: I was a tomboy my whole life… But I was tall and thin, so people would always tell me that I should model. A friend of my mom's told me there was a beauty pageant coming up and I should compete in it. It was part of the Miss Universe organization… It was in my hometown of Texas, so I competed there and ended up winning… I was so surprised, I didn’t know what I had gotten myself into… It actually led me to Hollywood and that’s where I wanted to end up.

Fox News: What’s the most outrageous thing you’ve ever had to do for a good photo?

Morgensen: I was in New York and shooting a summer line for a purse collection. It was about five degrees outside. It was also raining. I was wearing a tank top with strappy heels and little capri pants. I was just wearing that while walking around the street as photos were being taken of the purses. It was so, so cold. I couldn’t feel my body or anything. But that’s how it is in this industry. It’s all over the place, but I love it.

https://instagram.fsnc1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/t51.2885-15/sh0.08/e35/p750x750/19931672_111013032869926_114490767115812864_n.jpg

Fox News: What are some other fun facts our readers should know about you?

Morgensen: I can sing and talk in a Chipmunk voice! I discovered this talent about five years ago. I’m also a world champion basketball player. I won a major tournament when I was in third grade. And I just love staying active. Whether it’s rock climbing, kickboxing – anything, I just love it.

Extra points for Chelsea's kickboxing (http://www.martialartsmart.com/kickboxing-styles.html).

Arif says he wants his restaurant to appeal to millennials, who are “much more sensitive to sexual nuances.”

“The millennials are much more sophisticated,” he said. “They would be repelled by a very overt message.”

He described his conceptual restaurant as “a sports bar and grill with, ah, skimpy uniforms.

“We’re still searching for the right name to put on there.”

To that end, Arif started a poll on Facebook with name proposals. Those who select the winning name will be entered into a drawing for $1,000 and free beer.

Blonde Bleachers, Cheers Taphouse, Busted Bourbons and Yogies Taphouse are additional proposals. A “yogie” is defined by the Urban Dictionary as someone who eats and sleeps often.

“The restaurant concept is going wild,” Arif said. “At the end of the day, everybody likes to look at pretty girls and drink beer.”

“Those names are terrible,” Glenn Bechtel wrote in a comment. “I was thinking Mammary’s. ... Oh wait too overt for the sophisticated palates that go to places like these.”

As of Tuesday morning, Cheers Taphouse had the most votes, Arif said

A 2017 survey of 250 women who worked in “breastaurants” found the waitresses suffer from a greater risk of developing eating disorders, anxiety and depression.

Some restaurants create grading systems to assess the women who work in them, the survey found.

“We want to raise awareness about the negative impact that these types of restaurant environments may have on female servers,” Dawn Syzmanski, one of two psychology researchers from the University of Tennessee who performed the survey, told USA Today. “We want the public to use this data in personal decisions about whether to support or not support these types of restaurants.”

When asked whether the survey’s results concerned him, Arif said, “No. No, not really because ... we don’t force anybody to work there.”

Arif, who is also a lawyer, said that to avoid gender or appearance discrimination in hiring, his servers will be classified as models under what’s known as the bona fide occupational qualification exception — the same exception to discrimination laws that allows casting directors to recruit, say, a white actor to play George Washington, Arif said.

Since the women at his restaurants will be classified as models, they will earn “well above anything waitresses make.”

He estimated they’ll earn between $700 and $1,000 per week including tips, and he added that a tuition reimbursement program will be granted to employees who earn B’s and above in college.

“We want to encourage these ladies to enhance their full potential,” he said.

He added that he is a “a capitalist to the core, but a capitalist with a social conscience,” and that he’s a founding member of a nonprofit, the Mayflower Clinic, that pays medical expenses for the uninsured.

Arif said he’s not ready to create a restaurant that caters to female clientele rather than men.

“I just don’t think Wichita’s ready for something like that, or there’s not enough segment here maybe,” Arif says. “Of course, we don’t want to be partial, but I just don’t know yet if I’m brave enough to do something like that.”

Arif says he wants women and children to be comfortable coming to his restaurant, regardless of its future name.

“Otherwise, it would look like a strip club, and we don’t want that.”

Look for results of the naming contest by Jan. 15.

No name announce yet. I'm eager with anticipation...

Hooters as we know it looks like a thing of the past — the restaurant’s latest move to compete is proof (http://rare.us/rare-news/business/hooters-as-we-know-it-looks-like-a-thing-of-the-past-with-the-restaurants-latest-move-to-compete/)
Matt Naham, January 15, 2018 11:35 am

The wings restaurant with a reputation as a “breastaurant” known as Hooters is exploring new business initiatives as it realizes it will be impossible to remain competitive hoping that people will walk through its front doors.

Hooters as we know it is becoming Hooters as we knew it, as the chain emphasizes food delivery services without bombshell staffers being involved.

Chief Executive Terry Marks, the New York Post reported, talked up food delivery services at the ICR Retail conference in Orlando and acknowledged that many people wouldn’t be caught dead in a Hooters but would still eat the food.

Marks said that the company is focusing on delivery and pick-up orders and, as a result, has solved its polarizing branding issue.

“Many people wouldn’t step foot in our restaurants, but they want our product,” Marks said. “Delivery [solves] the polarizing issue the brand has had.”

That’s why the restaurant has gone from having delivery or take out at seven locations to 96 in a year. We’ve talked about the Hooters-specific brand issue as it relates to industry-wide trends that show decline in dining out.

Between 2012 and 2016, Hooters lost 7 percent of its locations due to stagnating sales, according to a Business Insider report.

While the lack of appeal for Hooters may have something to do with a dip in interest in breast-related content among a younger crowd, a decline in dining out across the industry compounded the problem and forced the company to explore other options.

Food Newsfeed delved deeper into this problem in an article from 2016 headlined “Are We Witnessing the Death of Casual Dining?” In that piece, the plight of “mid-scale” casual dining establishments is explored.

Victor Fernandez, who tracks insights in the food industry for TDn2K, said that it’s obvious the “percentage of brands that are positive is shrinking.”

“When you think about from recession until now, it’s all been negative traffic growth every year,” he says. “It’s less and less guest occasions than what we had the previous year, so that’s the main concern for the chain restaurant industry.”

Fernandez said that since the recession these types of restaurants have been struggling to compete with others that have quicker service.

“Quick service has been doing much better, and it has been doing much better for the last year or two. They’re able to drive some positive [comparable restaurant] numbers for both sales and traffic, so they’re in a much better spot,” he said. “Full-service has been struggling a bit more, and within that, casual dining is really the sub-segment that is struggling the most. If you drill down a little bit more, it’s the bar and grill sector that’s really having the most trouble.”

Busty babe in ultra-short shorts helps Taiwanese snack vendor quadruple sales (https://medium.com/shanghaiist/busty-babe-in-ultra-short-shorts-helps-taiwanese-snack-vendor-quadruple-sales-be77792dc5fc)

Looking to draw in a couple more customers, a braised meat vendor in Taiwan decided to hand over the management of his stall for one night to a cleavage-bearing woman wielding a cleaver.

This turns out to have been a rather good business decision on his part. The vendor told Taiwanese media that with “Little Peach” (小桃子) at the helm his stall’s sales quadrupled as a long lines of curious customers stretched out into the road at a Taichung night market.

Afterward, the model posted images of herself working at the braised snack stall onto Facebook, creating an even bigger stir online. The images show “Little Peach” in a low-cut sweater and a pair of extremely short shorts.

According to Taiwan News, the woman has thusly earned herself the title of “Braised Sister.” When she’s not holding down things at the stall, she can be found wearing even less for her day job.

Interesting take on this. I suppose if an Asian-themed breastaurant opened, I'd have similar issues. But I just got to say - the Mexican beer posters is see in all the taquerias that I frequent are some of the sexiest beer posters of all.

'Sex Mex' Is Trendy, but Using Sex to Sell Tacos Is Hardly New (http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/restaurants/sex-mex-is-trendy-but-using-sex-to-sell-tacos-is-hardly-new-10090078)
PATRICIA ESCÁRCEGA | FEBRUARY 2, 2018 | 7:00AM

On a recent Friday night, throngs of 20-somethings were packed inside El Hefe, the “super macho taquería” in downtown Scottsdale that’s probably best known for two things: kiddie-pool-size adult beverages called Beergaritas, and the “Hefe Girls,” the restaurant’s crew of young, scantily clad female servers and bartenders, who regularly take turns dancing on the bar, Coyote Ugly-style.

On this night, the Beergaritas were flowing, the wordless thump of EDM vibrated in the air, and as promised, a couple of Hefe Girls danced on the bar. One of the women, gyrating in hot pants and a low-cut tank top, poured a waterfall of tequila, straight from the bottle, into the gaping mouth of a young bearded dude. His friends slapped him on the back in approval, and his face took on the glow of someone who had just taken communion.

El Hefe, especially on nights like these, is a conspicuous example of a certain type of modern Mexican restaurant: loud, style-conscious, and not shy about using sex appeal to sell tacos and tequila.

“Hmmm, how can we describe El Hefe?” the restaurant’s website reads. “Think Dia de Los Muertos — but with style (and great-looking servers!)”

In late January, Scottsdale’s nightlife district welcomed another stylish and “sexy” Mexican restaurant to the neighborhood: Casa Amigos, from Scottsdale-based Evening Entertainment Group, described in a recent press release as “a spicy, sexy Mexican restaurant.”

Evening Entertainment Group declined to be interviewed for this piece, providing instead a short written statement about the group’s design philosophy and commitment to “top-notch” food and drink. Riot Hospitality Group, who owns El Hefe, also declined to be interviewed.

El Hefe and Casa Amigos aren’t the only restaurants putting “sexy” at the center of their brand, of course. Hooters brought the “breastaurant” into the American dining mainstream in the 1980s and 1990s. Similar concepts have followed suit, replicating the boobs-and-booze formula to the tune of more than $1 billion in annual sales, according to several reports.

But there’s also a whole subgenre of these kinds of restaurants — call them “Sex Mex,” if you want — that appears to be growing. There’s the Florida restaurant that describes its menu as “sexy Mexican food and craft cocktails.” The San Antonio Mexican restaurant where the all-female wait staff wear lingerie and swimwear. The Harlem taco shop, Sexy Taco/Dirty Cash, whose logo features a pinup model straddling a hard shell taco with one hand while balancing a margarita in the other.

All of which begs the question: Is Sex Mex a new trend in Mexican dining? More to the point, should it be?

“Sexy, spicy — those are the kinds of words that have historically been used to stereotype Latinas,” says Dr. Meredith Abarca, an English professor at the University of Texas at El Paso.

Abarca has written extensively about the intersection of class, gender, and Mexican foodways. She’s not sure what to think about a restaurant that markets itself as “sexy” and “spicy.”

“Spicy, in the context of chiles and Mexican food history, that makes sense to me,” she says. “But when you add the word sexy, it raises a lot of questions.”

“The first thing that comes to mind is ‘hot tamale.’ The old stereotype of Latinas as hot, sizzling things.”

Hot tamale. Spicy señorita. The words invoke a dark-haired, red-lipped, hypersexual Latina woman. It’s one of the oldest and most persistent Latina stereotypes in the book.

https://images1.phoenixnewtimes.com/imager/u/blog/10099155/lupe_velez_-_cine_mundial.jpg
Mexican film actress Lupe Velez was sometimes marketed as “The Hot Pepper."Courtesy of Cine Mundial

Spicy is what Mexican film actress Lupe Velez, star of the “Mexican spitfire” silent film series, was called in turn-of-the-century Hollywood (Velez was sometimes marketed as “The Hot Pepper”). Spicy is “exotic” Carmen Miranda donning blood-red lipstick, a sequined bra, and pineapple headdress. Spicy is Sofía Vergara playing an archetypically loud, sexy Latina bombshell, well into the 21st century on ABC’s Modern Family.

Spicy suggests someone who is alluring, but also tempestuous and childlike. To be spicy is to be a person who cannot be taken entirely seriously, and possibly shouldn’t be trusted.

It might seem like a harmless, even flattering, cliché. But tell that to Josefa Loaiza, the Gold Rush-era Californian with the dubious distinction of being what many historians believe is the only woman to be lynched and hanged in the state of California. Her crime: stabbing a man who broke into her house. Reports from the era describe her as a hot-blooded beauty. From her saga, it’s easy to imagine the terrible ways that “spicy” and “hot-blooded” can be transmuted into “crazy” — or “dangerous.”

https://images1.phoenixnewtimes.com/imager/u/blog/10099145/gustavo_arellano_-_larry_d._moore.jpg
Gustavo Arellano Larry D. Moore

How does the “spicy Latina” trope intersect with the food world, though? I asked Gustavo Arellano, whose book Taco USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America charts the intriguing trajectory of Mexican cooking in the U.S.

Arellano, famous for gleefully imploding racist stereotypes in his popular long-running syndicated column “Ask a Mexican,” says that the “spicy Latina” is a very old trope that played a big part in popularizing Mexican food in the U.S.

“It goes back all the way to the first famous Mexican restaurateurs, when they were known as chili queens in San Antonio,” he says.

Arellano devotes a chapter in his book to the story of the chili queens. These were the Mexican female cooks who set up makeshift restaurants at night in the plazas of 19th-century San Antonio. The food — which included chile con carne and tamales dished out of big pots placed over open fires — attracted curious tourists drawn to the “exotic” local dishes.

They were drawn not only by the novelty of the food, but by the “coquettish señoritas” serving it, which is how writer O. Henry describes the women in his short story “The Enchanted Kiss.”

“They were literally the first spicy señoritas,” says Arellano. “And whether they did it purposely or not, a lot of their appeal was their sex appeal.”

The chili queens may have faded from the plazas of San Antonio decades ago, but the idea of “coquettish señoritas” lives on to this day.

Before there were overtly sexual breastaurants, Mexican restaurants were adept at highlighting female sexuality, albeit in slightly more subtle ways than today’s Hefe Girls.

Like other “ethnic” cuisines angling for the American mainstream, Mexican restaurants in the latter half of the 20th century often played up the romance of exoticism, in this case the romance of “Old Mexico.” Portraying Mexican women in a certain light was a big part of that romantic image.

China poblanaKaren Apricot / Flickr

Arelleno points to the china poblana costume — a sometimes low-cut peasant dress often worn by female servers — which became a hallmark of higher-end Mexican restaurants in the latter half of the 20th century. The costume was a tangible marker that placed Latinas as exotic, sensual, and decorative.

The china poblana costume has largely been retired from contemporary Mexican restaurants. But in cities like metro Phoenix, Arellano says, Sex Mex continues in at least two different veins.

“You have the restaurants for the Scottsdale crowd, but you also have restaurants for the Mexican immigrant crowd,” he says. “And where you really see it is in the marisquerías.”

If the Scottsdale crowds have places like El Hefe, then the Mexican immigrant crowd has places like Mariscos Hector, a sexed-up Sinaloan marisquería (seafood restaurant) that’s become a mainstay of the Orange County Mexican food scene.

Mariscos Hector proudly bills itself as the “Mexican Hooters.” Unlike other breastaurants, which downplay charges of sexism by talking up the quality of their chicken wings or burgers, Mariscos Hector feels more like an oversexed bar that happens to serve seafood. The restaurant’s female servers, a curvaceous crew that serves aguachile platters with a side of earsplitting banda music, are shamelessly plugged as the restaurant’s feature attraction. (Mariscos Hector did not respond to New Times’ request for an interview.)

This type of Mexican restaurant, geared toward Mexican immigrant men, doesn’t play on racial stereotypes to appeal to a non-Mexican dining public. It relies, instead, on good old-fashioned Mexican machismo.

In the end, El Hefe and Mariscos Hector, two restaurants that ostensibly seem worlds apart, feel a little like kindred spirits. Beneath Hector’s thunderous banda music, and El Hefe’s thumping EDM soundtrack, you can hear both speaking the universal language of sexism.

Getting spicy at El Hefe. Benjamin Leatherman

These days, when restaurants boast about sex appeal, it’s often intended to convey things like tufted leather booths, or pricey, showstopper bars.

“Sexy” has become a popular — and, arguably, overused and confused — marketing and design term, a catchall for anything meant to be understood as youthful, deluxe, or stylish. I suspect that’s what places like Casa Amigos have in mind when they talk about a “spicy, sexy” Mexican restaurant.

But sexy, when it’s expressly describing a sexually charged restaurant environment — well, that can be problematic, Abarca tells me.

Hyper-sexualized work environments, like those found in some restaurants, shape the “bigger picture” of society, she says. They reflect the balance of power in the world — one that often belongs to powerful men.

“With all these accusations we keep hearing about ... men who feel like they can do whatever they want — this is just another way in which, systematically, women are stereotyped and objectified,” she says.

No matter what is meant by using the word “sexy,” though, using sex appeal to sell Mexican food, even on the broadest terms, inevitably evokes more than a century of racist and sexist stereotypes — cue the hot tamales, hot-blooded chicas, and loud, vapid bombshells.

And it’s worth noting that cheerfully branding Mexican food as “sexy” or “fun” or “spicy” exoticizes a food culture that is not exotic. Mexican food, in case you haven’t noticed, has been around these parts for quite a while. It’s as American as apple pie, or Taco Bell.

“Mexican food now is so popular,” Arellano tells me. “You really don’t need sex appeal to sell it anymore.”

That kind of clear-eyed assessment still seems lost on some restaurateurs, though, who continue to lean on hackneyed concepts to sell food and drink. Why not, instead, focus that energy on making great food?

It’s hard to ignore, too, how disingenuous, tone-deaf, and unwelcoming these kinds of restaurants can feel.

Proclaiming that your Mexican restaurant is like Dia de Los Muertos, for instance — but with more style and great-looking servers — underlines a fixation with style over substance, and a lack of respect for the culture that’s helping put dollars in your pocket. And hiring only “sexy chicas” to serve food? It’s a surefire way to shut out a big part of the dining public.

“Sex and food, that’s not a new connection,” says Abarca. “But it’s interesting that it’s being used so boldly by restaurants.

“The question remains, who are they hoping to attract?”

I do luv tacos...

Tokyo Hooters now offers rental work spaces, and they’re free for students (https://soranews24.com/2018/03/27/tokyo-hooters-now-offers-rental-work-spaces-and-theyre-free-for-students/)

Service is perfect for mobile workers who don’t need to go to the office but do need to be around breasts.

Walk into just about any Starbucks in the Tokyo area on a weekday afternoon, and you’re likely to see at least one mobile professional with a laptop who’s simultaneously hard at work and sipping on a relaxing cup of coffee. But what if you don’t like coffee, or even delicious Japan-exclusive Frappuccinos? What if you prefer, say, breasts?

Then you’ll be happy to know that as of this month, you can also telecommute from the Hooters branch in Tokyo’s Ginza neighborhood. The restaurant chain, which professedly chaste regulars insist serves really tasty chicken wings, has teamed up with Spacee, a Japanese company which partners with Tokyo eateries to offer rentable work areas during the restaurants’ downtime.

Since March 23, the Ginza Hooters has designated 20 seats as Spacee works paces, which can be used in 30-minutes blocks for just 50 yen (US$0.47) as long as you’re registered with Spacee. The work spaces are available daily from 1 to 7 p.m., and while you’re under no obligation to order anything, but Spacee users who are feeling thirsty do receive discounts on selected beverages from the menu, which are, of course, served by Hooters waitresses wearing the chain’s traditional attire.

https://sociorocketnewsen.files.wordpress.com/2018/03/hw-2.png

In touting the service, Spacee boasts that “Working in a different environment from an ordinary office can boost productivity, and well as promote the development of new ideas.” Several of those ideas are likely to be breast-related, but that might not really be a problem, considering that breasts are practically their own subsector of the Japanese economy.

The Hooters workspaces (which look to be primarily a desk and Internet access, so you’ll need to bring your own laptop) are available on a first-come, first-served basis, with no reservation required. Users will have to register with Spacee ahead of time, though, which can be done here, but there are no sign-up or membership fees.

Oh, and about the 50-yen fee for 30 minutes of work space time? It’s waived for students, who can study at them for free. Spacee users under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a guardian, though, so we might see some Tokyo fathers suddenly taking an active interest in their children’s education by volunteering to take them to Hooters to cram for upcoming tests.

Twin Peaks mixes scantily-clad servers with a menu built for "foodies." Twin Peaks

As Hooters' sales slump, Twin Peaks is on the rise.

The mountain lodge-themed "breastaurant" chain has reported nine quarters of positive comparable sales, with same-store sales growing 5.1% in 2017.

According to CEO Joe Hummel, Twin Peaks' success depends on successfully combining "Twin Peaks girls" with a foodie-approved menu.

"Everybody's a foodie nowadays," Hummel told Business Insider. "You can't fool the consumer in today's world."

A Hooters competitor is beating the original "breastaurant" brand at its own game.

In the past year, Twin Peaks topped Knapp-Track's list of concepts ranked by comparable sales growth. The 81-location chain has reported nine quarters of positive comparable sales, with same-store sales growing 5.1% in 2017.

According to Twin Peaks' CEO, Joe Hummel, the chain has risen above its rivals by perfecting its mix of scantily-clad "Twin Peaks girls" and a vast, foodie-approved menu.

https://amp.businessinsider.com/images/5ac526d77a74af21008b468d-960-720.jpg
"Twin Peaks girls" are a key part of the chain's brand. Twin Peaks

"Everybody's a foodie nowadays," Hummel told Business Insider. "You can't fool the consumer in today's world, with all the different food shows and food networks that are out there."
Twin Peaks' customers are more than 70% male and primarily in their twenties and early thirties, though Hummel is sure to note that "we obviously appeal to all different ages and genders."

Twin Peaks was founded in Lewisville, Texas, in 2005. From the start, the chain has offered a slightly different take on the breastaurant concept than its more well-known rival.

"Hooters just wasn't racy enough," founder and then-CEO Randy DeWitt told Bloomberg in 2014.

However, talking to Hummel in 2018, Twin Peaks' menu is just as important in distinguishing the chain from rivals like Hooters. While the chain airs sports games and identifies itself as a "sports lodge," Hummel is just as proud of its made-from-scratch menu as its Twin Peaks girls.

https://amp.businessinsider.com/images/5ac51e917a74af23008b47a9-750-563.jpg
Twin Peaks' Chicken and Waffles. Twin Peaks

"It's just a wide variety of different styles of food that don't necessarily fit the stereotypical sports bar," Hummel said.

Twin Peaks' menu includes things such as breakfast tacos, pot roast, and chicken and waffles in addition to extensive wings and tacos selections.

That isn't to say that Twin Peaks is all chicken, no breasts.

Twin Peaks girls continue to serve as the spokeswoman for the chain, plastered on advertisements across print, TV, and social media campaigns. Even with millennials' rumored disinterest in cleavage and questions about female objectification, Hummel thinks the "breastaurant" business model is sticking around.

https://amp.businessinsider.com/images/5919d1b41442931c008b5689-960-720.jpg
Twin Peaks

"When you look at the recipe of a beautiful Twin Peaks girl, combined with great beverages, great food, and a warm setting, we don't see that ever changing," Hummel said.

Twin Peaks is kicking off an expansion push in 2018, with plans to open roughly five new locations this year. Next year, the chain plans to open up 12 new restaurants, and it's on track to open roughly 15 to 18 in 2020. Ultimately, Hummel says, there's easily potential for more than 250 to 300 locations.

Much of the sit-down, casual-dining industry has been plagued by a "sea of sameness," with chains like Chili's, Applebee's, and TGI Fridays struggling to stand out from the crowd.

The Twin Peaks girls help the chain stand out from its more straight-laced casual-dining competition. And, the tweaks to the breastaurant formula — like sub-freezing craft beer, an extended menu, and a lodge theme — set it apart from more unbuttoned rivals.

"I think our total brand DNA, there's a demand for it," Hummel said. "Everybody has done little bits and pieces of it, but no one has done the whole program."

Twin Peaks rises from the sea of sameness. :):)

California coffee shop's bikini-clad baristas will now wear shorts and tank tops following backlash from community (http://www.foxnews.com/food-drink/2018/09/14/california-coffee-shops-bikini-clad-baristas-will-now-wear-shorts-and-tank-tops-following-backlash-from-community.html)

The owner of Pink Pantherz Espresso announced his newest location will employ baristas in more modest clothing. (Google)

The bikini-clad baristas at the newest Pink Pantherz Espresso shop near Redwood City, Calif., will be ditching their swimsuits when the café opens on Friday afternoon, albeit in favor of more modest attire.

Pink Pantherz, which regularly employs scantily-clad female baristas at its locations in Modesto, Fresno and Fremont, has come to an agreement with San Mateo County after meeting with concerned residents near the Redwood City location — and amid threats of protesters planning to march outside the café.

As part of the agreement, the owner of the shop has confirmed the female servers in the new location – which actually sits in a unincorporated part of North Fair Oaks – will wear shorts and tank tops instead of lingerie and bikinis.

The coffee stand will also rename some of the edgier items on the menu, including its “Bootycall” and “Pantydropper” drinks.

“[Pink Pantherz is] revisiting drink names and even implementing, for the first time, a more family-friendly dress policy for their baristas,” Pink Pantherz Espresso owner, Jose Carmona, told The Mercury News.

“We’re surprised [by the backlash] obviously, just because it’s not a new concept, but at the end of the day we’re a company and we can change,” Carmona added.

Public outcry over the newest Pink Pantherz Espresso location erupted earlier this summer, after residents became aware of the “bikini shop” planning to open on El Camino Real, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

In the time since, the San Mateo County received a petition signed by 2,000 people opposed to the shop’s opening, while another Change.org petition gathered 1,500.

The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors also met with residents to discuss their issues with the baristas’ dress code, which some feared would send the wrong message to schoolchildren passing by.

While Friday afternoon's protest was canceled after the announcement, some still plan on marching as “a celebration of the power of community,” Sister Christina Heltsley told the Mercury News.

“The young women that are [employed by Pink Pantherz] have their reasons [but] it feels like we’ve made so many steps forward and this is going backward.”

County officials are also pleased with Carmona’s decision, but admitted the “distasteful” attire of the baristas was not technically violating any rules.

Bottoms Up Espresso is planning to open up a new location in Chico, Calif., but the idea appears to have residents hot and bothered - and not in the way the owners likely intended.
Pink Pantherz Espresso's opening in the summer came weeks after a similar California chain, Bottoms Up Espresso, began getting backlash over its new location in Chico.

Hooters girl Hailey Slobodzian details following in her mother’s footsteps: ‘I would put on her uniform’ (https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/hooters-girl-hailey-slobodzian-details-following-in-her-mothers-footsteps-i-would-put-on-her-uniform)
By Stephanie Nolasco | Fox News

Hailey Slobodzian says it was her mother, also a Fort Myers Beach Hooters girl and a calendar pinup, who inspired her to become a Hooters girl.

The 23-year-old brunette beauty, a Florida-based nursing student, has been working at the Fort Myers Hooters for five years and has since been voted a fan favorite.

Slobodzian has zero regrets following in her mother Amy’s footsteps and slipping into the iconic orange shorts to serve hot wings and cold beer. In fact, she is one of several girls featured in the 2019 Hooters Calendar, which helps raise money in support of breast cancer.

Mother and daughter spoke to Fox News about working at Hooters, dealing with criticism and the common misconceptions people still have about the popular restaurant chain.

Fox News: Hailey, describe the moment when you first saw your photo.

Hailey Slobodzian: I remember they kept the calendar very secretive. They didn’t reveal which photo was used until much later on. I was actually working at that time so they caught me midwork and I was serving customers. They came out to my bar and surprised me. I was over the moon. It was pretty incredible.

Fox News: Amy what did you think of the photo?

Amy: I got to see it on social media and I thought it was just gorgeous. The photo came out so beautiful. We’re all really proud of her.

Fox News: Amy, you were a Hooters Girl in Fort Myers beach as well. What was it about the franchise that appealed to you?

Amy: I’ve always been in the food and beverage industry so I was usually surrounded by women. I really like working with females the most. Hooters was one of the best companies to work for. I did a couple of promotions with them as well. I don’t think they were really big with the calendars at that time yet. We did a lot of events, including NASCAR. I was with the company on and off for about three years because I did get pregnant with Hailey, so I took some time off.

Fox News: Hailey, did you always know mom worked at Hooters?
Slobodzian: Yeah! Actually, there are pictures from my childhood where I would put on her Hooters uniform for Halloween. I always admired it. The prominent orange shorts always stuck with me when I was growing up. Even when my mom retired and put those shorts in the back of the drawer, it always stayed in the back of my mind.

I always knew there would be a possibility of me working there. One day I was actually going out to eat and I was approached by one of the waitresses. I wasn’t even 18 yet. I was able to fill out an application and get a kick start on all the different trainings they had available. By the time I turned 18, I was able to work for the company. It was always engrained in the back of my mind that I would eventually follow in my mother’s footsteps.

Fox News: What’s it been like working at Hooters?

Slobodzian: To be honest, when I first started working for Hooters, I just thought it was a great way to meet new people. But, I've formed incredible friendships. I’ve met so many wonderful people that I'm just fortunate to serve.

I initially believed this would be a way to make extra money while in college. But with time, I was exposed to different opportunities with the company. I was really shy at first, but my manager encouraged me to get involved with all the different activities Hooters is involved with. With each year, I would get higher up and earn different titles. I feel much more confident about myself. I’ve come a long way.

Fox News: Amy, what advice did you give to your daughter?

Amy: I always instilled in my kids just to always be themselves. Treat everybody that walks through the door as an equal. You never know who’s sitting on the other side of that bar or at your table. Be proper and never forget your pleases and thank yous.

Fox News: Some parents may feel uncomfortable over the idea of their daughter working at Hooters. What are your thoughts on this?

Amy: That’s a hard one. But in my eyes, Hooters is definitely a family restaurant. There’s nothing more different between Hooters and McDonald's. Kids go there. There’s nothing wrong with what the girls are wearing or what meals they’re serving.

When you walk in, somebody holding the door for you. There’s somebody saying hello to you. There’s somebody thanking you for stopping by and saying goodbye. There’s somebody encouraging you to come back. It’s a big group of girls creating one positive experience together. It’s the best way to meet friends and meet people in your neighborhood. And somebody will always watch your back.

Fox News: What’s a misconception you feel people still have about Hooters?

Slobodzian: The most common question I get asked all the time is how it is working with girls. People don’t think it’s possible. They assume it’s catty and there’s a lot of drama. Fortunately, that’s not the case. We all have a really good relationship. We’re able to rely on each other for many different circumstances. Whether it’s grabbing a coffee for someone in the morning or being there for someone when a loved one passes away. We all have just a really wonderful relationship. I think Hooters does a really great job of maintaining that family aspect. And we definitely implement that.

Amy: It’s more than just a job there. Everyone has to work together as a team. It’s never just a job you happen to work. It’s much more meaningful than that. … Once you start working there, you really begin making friends and getting a grasp of what Hooters is as a whole.

"There’s nothing more different between Hooters and McDonald's"

Haley Lu Richardson and Regina Hall in Support the Girls.

Welcome back to Friday afternoon, a time to “Marie Kondo” all the work you didn’t finish this week and start planning what you’re going to watch and eat between now and Monday. I’ve got three recommendations for things to stream: an excellent indie feature, and two lively shows about Mexican-American dishes. Here’s what to add to your queue this weekend:

An amazing comedy set in a ‘breastaurant’

https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/77tvL6lWIOth6DU4PrmwxzsgNUM=/0x0:5760x3840/920x0/filters:focal(0x0:5760x3840):format(webp):no_upsca le()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/13684947/support_the_girls.jpg
Regina Hall in Support the Girls

If you have a service industry job — whether it’s in a fine dining restaurant, a fast-food place, or anything in between — the best you can hope for is to have a manager like Lisa, the protagonist of the indie dramedy Support the Girls. She’s one of the best fictional characters I’ve seen on screen in ages, in a movie that’s slyly powerful, and entertaining from start to finish.

Lisa, played by Regina Hall, is constantly aware of all the pressure points that her staffers face inside and outside of Double Whammies, the Hooters knock-off where they work. But even as they’re serving “big butt” beers to ***** schmucks in the middle of the day, Lisa wants her staffers to feel empowered, and know how to navigate the bizarre situations that arise in their workplace. She understands the importance of making her teammates feel like they’re not just co-workers, but members of a pseudo-family who can reach out for help when they need it. And, on top of it all, Lisa clearly thinks her girls deserve to have fun on the job — on their own terms.

Support the Girls chronicles Lisa’s shift from hell, the messy evening that follows, and an afternoon a week or so later, where justice for her and her teammates seems like a distinct possibility.

All restaurants, even the ones that don’t involve skimpy server uniforms and mandatory flirtation with guests, have echoes of the chaotic workplace depicted in Support the Girls. And while I appreciate the attention to detail paid to the general rhythms of restaurant life, my hunch is that filmmaker Andrew Bujolowski chose the breastaurant setting because it throws one of the film’s central themes — the struggles, big and small, that women face in the workplace — into sharp relief. As my colleague Alissa Wilkinson notes in her Vox review, the film starts as “a workplace comedy“ but “morphs into an affecting, startlingly insightful depiction of the bone-weary work of being a woman in a man’s world.”

The most powerful moment in that regard is a scene between Lisa and her boss, Cubby, in the car on the way to the bank. She basically runs his entire business from head-to-toe, approaching her employees and regulars with a level of grace that is perhaps uncommon for a shabby neighborhood sports bar. But Cubby can’t looks past a few mistakes — decisions she made while trying to help one of her employees out of a bind — despite the fact that Lisa goes above and beyond the call of duty in every other way. The message, it seems, is that Lisa can’t under- or over-perform at her job without catching flack from her boss. It’s a completely toxic relationship, one of several that the manager and her staff have to navigate in the Double Whammies universe.

Bujolowski balances heavy scenes like this with moments of surprising levity (a particularly hilarious/cathartic plot twist notably punctuates the end of Lisa and Cubby’s ride in the car that afternoon). The filmmaker, who first earned acclaim as one of the pioneers of the “Mumblecore” movement, has taken the best traits of that genre — an emphasis on the emotional lives of seemingly ordinary people; an ear for naturalistic dialogue — and applied them to a story with much broader appeal than any of his previous works. His next project is, somewhat surprisingly, an adaptation of Lady and the Tramp for Disney. After seeing the skilful way he juggles the lives of all of the characters in Support the Girls, I look forward to watching what he does with a star-crossed mutt and Cocker Spaniel.

But the main reason to watch Support the Girls is Hall’s masterful performance as Lisa, and particularly her scenes with co-stars Shayna McHayle and Haley Lu Richardson. The movie is now streaming for free on Hulu, but you can also watch it on Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, and YouTube.

Bikini baristas appeal city ordinance issuing dress code (https://www.foxnews.com/food-drink/bikini-baristas-appeal-city-ordinance-issuing-dress-code-debate-definition-of-anal-cleft)

Bikini baristas appeal city ordinance issuing dress code

How much “anal cleft” is one allow to show while at work? That’s the question one Washington court is trying to answer.

A U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is reviewing an ongoing legal saga between bikini baristas and the city of Everett over the anatomical phrase “anal cleft” and whether dress codes imposed on businesses violate their civil rights.

Both sides appeared in court Monday to further argue the city’s ordinance, which was passed August 2017, that restricts what employees of “quick-service” restaurants wear by requiring that the “bottom one-half of the anal cleft” be covered, Herald Net reported.

According to the ordinance, employees who work at fast food restaurants, food trucks and coffee stands are required to wear at least a tank top and shorts while at work.

Employees are required to wear at least a tank top and shorts. (City of Everett)

U.S. District Judge Marsha Pechman approved the injunction during litigation, ruling the ordinance likely violates the bikini baristas’ First and 14th Amendment rights.

“The term ‘bottom one-half of the anal cleft’ is not well-defined or reasonably understandable, and the ordinances otherwise fail to provide clear guidance and raise risks of arbitrary enforcement. The court finds that the dress code ordinance likely violates plaintiffs’ right to free expression under the First Amendment,” Pechman wrote in the injunction order, Courthouse News reported.

Jovanna Edge, owner of Hillbilly Hotties, one of several bikini barista coffee shops involved in the suit, and attorney Melinda Ebelhar argued that the order was intentionally vague and would be too difficult to enforce.

Ebelhar claimed it would take “advanced math” to figure out whether the bottom half of the anal cleft was exposed.

U.S. Circuit Judge Morgan Christen seemed to agree, asking, “How can law enforcement determine where the bottom half is and measure it?” Courthouse News reported.

Assistant city attorney Ramsey Ramerman disagreed with the questioning, saying that the legislation was specifically worded and argued that Edge understood what the new dress code law allowed.

Ramerman argued it was the city’s responsibility to combat prostitution or illegal sexual activity – messages he claimed the bikini barista coffee stand was sending.

Judge Sandra Ikuta agreed, stating she was concerned customers would see the women working as saying: “I am sexually available,” the Herald Net reported.

According to the publication, Ebelhar defended the baristas' choice of outfits as personal expression, female empowerment and a form of body positivity.

“The message they are sending is this is not your mother’s coffee stand,” she said.

A final ruling has not yet been reported.

I usually don't copy embedded links but the busty waitress Akihabara ramen joint and the “breast slash” cafe...well, Sora News 24 got it going on.

Miss Hooters Japan finalists announced day after chain files for bankruptcy protection in Japan (https://soranews24.com/2019/03/28/miss-hooters-japan-finalists-announced-day-after-chain-files-for-bankruptcy-protection-in-japan/)

https://sociorocketnewsen.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/mh-1-1.png

Busty waitress restaurants’ fortunes continue to bounce up and down.

In many ways, Hooters seems like a concept that would work extremely well in Japan. This is, after all, a nation that itself has produced some startling innovations in breast-related dining, such as the busty waitress Akihabara ramen joint (https://soranews24.com/2018/08/08/busty-waitresses-breast-shaped-ramen-draw-crowds-to-new-anime-themed-restaurant-in-tokyo%E3%80%90photos%E3%80%91/) and the “breast slash” cafe (https://soranews24.com/2018/02/06/tokyos-first-breast-slash-cafe-is-opening-soon/).

And sure enough, the chain has opened a total of seven locations in Japan since arriving in the country in 2005. However, Japanese fans of the Hooters chain have had their spirits bouncing up and down this week, starting with the development that on March 25, HJ, the company that manages Hooters’ Japanese restaurants, filed for bankruptcy protection from its creditors in Tokyo District Court under Japan’s Civil Rehabilitation Law.

Then, just a day later, Hooters enthusiastically announced that the finalists for the Miss Hooters Japan Contest 2019 have been chosen. Pared down from a pool of 51 entrants, the 15 finalists, selected from among the chain’s waitstaff, will appear at a special event in Tokyo Shinjuku to crown the winner of the contest’s ninth iteration, who will then travel to the U.S. in June to compete in the Miss hooters World Tournament.

▼ A few of this year’s finalists
https://sociorocketnewsen.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/mh-2-1.png?w=640&h=437

The Miss Hooters Japan finals will take place at the chain’s Tokyo Shinjuku Nishiguchi branch on April 15, with the doors opening at 6 p.m. and the festivities getting underway an hour later. Ticket prices range from 5,000 yen (US$45) for a spot in the standing area, while the top-of-the-line SS Ticket, for 14,000 yen, gets you a spot with a superior view of the contest stage, where the contestants will appear in no less than three outfits: their Hooters uniform, a swimsuit, and a costume of their own choosing. The SS Ticket also gets you a 2,500-yen food/drink voucher and both a T-shirt autographed by the 15 finalists as well as a mini photo session with them.

https://sociorocketnewsen.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/mh-3-1.png?w=640&h=437

Meanwhile, HJ itself will be working within the framework of the Civil Rehabilitation Law to restructure its outstanding bad debt. The company owes an estimated 560 million yen to a total of 56 creditors.

Observers spotted a sign of trouble at the start of the year when Hooters’ Fukuoka branch closed down, and analysts say sales for Hooters branches in Japan have sagged in recent years, though they haven’t offered any theories as to why. Perhaps, like the busty ramen and breast slash restaurants mentioned above, Japan prefers the pop-up or limited-time model for its overtly sexy dining establishments, and Hooters hasn’t been getting the sort of repeat business it does in other countries. It could also be that while Japan’s countless hostess bars prove there’s a robust market for alcohol and snacks being served by young women in revealing outfits, Japanese customers prefer a quieter, more intimate atmosphere t the boisterous vibe at Hooters. Or maybe it’s neither of those, and Japan’s preexisting tebasaki chicken wing culinary tradition has conditioned local palates to reject Hooters’ hot sauce-slathered menu stars.

However, just because Hooters Japan is declaring bankruptcy doesn’t mean the chain is going out of business. HJ has promised that all six current Hooters Japan locations (four in Tokyo and one each in Osaka and Nagoya) will remain in operation.

We can’t tell you how relieved we are. For a second we thought we were going to have to find a new place to study.

Half of Playboy Club’s ‘bunny’ staff fired over poor service (https://pagesix.com/2019/04/22/half-of-playboy-clubs-bunny-staff-fired-over-poor-service/)

There’s a crisis at the new Playboy Club, insiders tell Page Six, because its management hasn’t been able to train the famed “Playboy Bunnies” to perform basic hosting tasks.

The club — which opened back in September — hired a whole herd of beautiful Bunnies to serve drinks and wait tables at the Hell’s Kitchen spot.

But it appears that managers may have worried more about how the prospective hires looked in a corset and fluffy tail than their relevant experience in the service industry.

“Service has been so bad that new management had to be brought in and they fired half the bunny staff,” a source told us.

Now the club has hired real waiters and culled the Bunnies, although it has kept some of the floppy-eared friends on — with adjusted job descriptions and slashed paychecks.

“They have been stripped of their duty to wait on tables because they cannot do service,” said a source, who added, “Bunnies are now allowed only to run drinks.”

The source said their pay has been cut from $40 an hour to $25 an hour.

Reached for comment, the club told us, “The club is committed to creating a great experience for [its] growing number of members and dinner guests, as well as being a great place to work for all of our employees.”

Now, we’re told, things are back on track and the club’s performing a lot better.

The club is a reboot of the original New York Playboy Club, which closed in 1986. Bunnies at the original included Debbie Harry, Lauren Hutton and Gloria Steinem, who worked there undercover for 11 days in 1963 and wrote the famed exposé “A Bunny’s Tale” for Show magazine.

The original club had strict rules for its Bunnies, laid out in the Bunny Instruction Manual. It outlawed dating members, chewing gum and reporting for duty with an “unkempt tail” or off-center ears.
I wanna read the Bunny Instruction Manual...:D

Meet Larkyn Dasch, the Hooters waitress looking to capitalize on her Bellator 222 moment (https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mma/2019/06/11/mma-larkyn-dasch-hooters-waitress-bellator-222/39569651/)
Simon Head, MMA Junkie Published 10:13 p.m. ET June 11, 2019 | Updated 10:23 p.m. ET June 11, 2019

When Larkyn Dasch steps out under the bright lights of the Bellator cage at Madison Square Garden, she'll do so with an open mind, a steely determination and the belief that she cannot be broken.

Dasch (0-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) takes on taekwondo ace Valerie Loureda (1-0 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) in a preliminary-card bout Friday night at Bellator 222 in New York. And the Michigan native says her fighting spirit will shine through in her debut.

"She'll have to kill me to win," Dasch told MMA Junkie this week. "I won't give up. I've only lost by decision. It doesn't matter what you do, you'll have to knock me out. If she knocks me out, good for her. But I have a gameplan, and I'll fight with more heart than she will.

"That's what I'll bring to it. I'll fight with more heart, and I think I fight with more heart than 99 percent of all female fighters."

I have officially signed a contract with @bellatormma for Bellator 222 and will be fighting at Madison Square Garden next Friday!! This was so last minute I actually signed the contract while I was at work at my side job at @taylor_hooters as a Hooters girl!!

Best wishes to my opponent but I am in amazing shape, am already on weight and ready to go to war.

Dasch made headlines when the fight was announced after she posted a photo of her signing her bout agreement while wearing her Hooters waitress gear. While some may have initially viewed it as a publicity stunt, Dasch said it was simply a result of circumstance rather than a PR move.

"I was working double shifts at Hooters all week, from morning to midnight, to free up time for me to make a planned trip to Nashville to visit family," Dasch explained. "So I was working when my manager brought me the contract to sign. He came in, ordered food, obviously, and had me sign the contract right there while I was on the clock."

Dasch, who is also a personality host for Radio Undercard, a boxing and MMA sports talk show in Detroit, admitted that while she follows Bellator, she wasn't aware of Loureda's emergence.

But, rather than ignorance, she explained that she makes a conscious effort to disconnect herself from potential opponents to help keep her mind clear of preconceptions before she steps into the cage.

"Actually, I have never heard of her," Dasch said of Loureda. "I follow Bellator and the UFC, but at the same time I know there is the potential that I could one day end up fighting those girls. And I don't like to know my opponents.

"I would rather my coaches tell me exactly what I'm supposed to do, give me a gameplan and then go in there not knowing who this girl is, because at the end of the day she's just another female fighter who trains every day and has the same struggles that I do."

Dasch's approach might seem a little different from the norm, but that's the 22-year-old's style. Her Instagram bio features an inspirational quote that reads: "If you live life like everyone else, you'll be just like everyone else."

It's a statement that she is directly applying to her career as she prepares to make a huge jump this weekend. Dasch was close to finishing her business administration degree and had just one semester remaining from her four-year course when she opted to drop out and chase her mixed martial arts dream.

"I was going to private college at the time, and when my friends heard what I had chosen to do, everyone thought I was crazy," Dasch said. "But I basically told everyone: 'I'm going for this. I can always go back and finish, but this is my opportunity, and I'm going to take it.'

"So I'm not doing what everyone else wants me to do or what everyone thinks I should do, or what everyone else is doing. Instead, I'm doing something completely different, and I'm hopeful that it will give me a completely different result."

And that result, Dasch said, will be a spectacular one on Friday night in the Big Apple.

"I'm confident in my standup, I'm confident in my ground (game), and I'm confident in my ability to block kicks," Dasch said. "I expect it to finish in a knockout."

And for those wondering if she'll be wearing the famous Hooters logo on her kit when she makes her way to the Bellator cage, don't rule it out.

"That is still undecided," she said. "We're still trying to figure out what we're going to do, but it could be that way. We'll see."

...scantily clad waiter restaurants are called Chestaurants? Nah, I like testosteraunts.

We remember Tallywackers (at least here on this thread). (http://www.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?54808-Breastaurants&p=1283630#post1283630)

Who would have thought monetizing male objectification could prove so difficult?

There are more than 300 Hooters locations in the United States, coupling a chain restaurant experience with gaggles of lightly dressed, flirty women as servers. What if you’re looking to get that same experience, but with men, though? You have zero options. None whatsoever.

That wasn’t always the case. “What if Hooters, but with dudes?” is a thing that existed, shirtless and in the flesh, in Texas. In the spirit of “breastaurants” like Hooters and Twin Peaks, it was named Tallywackers — the name, an oblique reference to the ’80s sex comedy Porky’s, evokes imagery of the restaurant servers’ junk, while simultaneously appearing to mean nothing at all. (“Tallywhacker” is in fact 18th-century British slang for *****, yet it never solidly fell into the vernacular on either side of the Atlantic.) At Tallywackers, staff wore uniforms that went a little higher up the scanty scale than at breastaurants Hooters and Twin Peaks: Per the local health code, servers were required to wear tank tops (at least until later in the evening, when most went shirtless). Below the waist, the guys — the Wackers? — wore only fire-truck-red or grey boxer briefs that conveyed more than just a hint of what was beneath the fabric.

Now, Tallywackers is just a faint memory of abs and underwear. Opening in May 2015 in the Dallas gayborhood of Oak Lawn, the restaurant’s location unsubtly implied a target demographic of thirsty ****sexuals; firsthand accounts affirm that the clientele was indeed, fairly gay, but it also featured a mix of genders, straight women among them. Much like its more widespread counterparts, Tallywackers was sexualized, yet firmly not a strip club: The only things officially getting wacked were customers’ appetites — yet some were reportedly ejected for groping servers, and staff were banned from hooking up with diners.

As the underwear party uniform suggests, Tallywackers pushed euphemism and sexual innuendo further than your garden-variety breastaurant. The menu, filled with phallic foodstuffs, featured “abb-itizers” and “cock-tails,” as well as the S&M Burger (Swiss and mushroom, duh), and the Tallywacker sundae, complete with a prominently displayed, uh, banana. Despite the silly food names, Tallywackers’s menu actually seems somewhat appealing, if urbane: Between fried Brussels sprouts, flatbreads, and a croque-monsieur, it was hardly groundbreaking, but still on a different plane of existence than the masculine standards of a breastaurants’ burgers, steaks, and wings.

Yet all the croque-monsieurs and thinly veiled dicks in Dallas couldn’t keep Tallywackers open: It closed after just a year in business. Owner Rodney Duke told local media that Tallywackers was simply moving, yet it never reopened.

There have been successful hospitality ventures adjacent to Tallywackers that have met some success. Most notable is Boxers, with three locations in New York City. But Boxers defines itself as a gay sports bar — Tallywackers never sold itself so precisely, and was spiritually closer to a Hooters in format than a bar.

Why hasn’t anybody else ever tried to open another so-called “chestaurant” (as Tallywackers was dubbed)? After all, if North America can support ridiculously niche concepts like a Garfield-themed restaurant or an entire chain dedicated to chicken salad, it seems like “Hooters for people who like men” would be a no-brainer. “Ogling men in skimpy underwear” maybe not the end goal of feminism or gay rights, but there’s certainly an imbalance to be corrected: America’s gays and girls should have that same opportunity afforded to the Hooters crowd.

Topless waiters, a local authority refusing to have staff work overtime so couples can marry on a supposedly auspicious day for weddings, and a company whose name suggests it doesn’t like to work are just some of the quirky stories making the news in China this month.
A civil affairs department in southeast China refused requests from young couples wanting to register their marriage on March 14, because it is not a traditional working day.
The date this year is seen as an auspicious one for couples to tie the knot because when strung together, the Chinese characters for date 2021314 look like those for “love you my whole life”.
The website of the Civil Affairs Bureau of Huaining county, in the southeastern province of Anhui, has seen couples posting online asking for officials to work on that day, despite it being a Sunday.
However, it refused the requests and reminded people of the dangers of large crowds congregating during the Covid-19 pandemic.
A spokeswoman for the Anhui Provincial Civil Affairs Department said it had left the decision on whether to allow officials to work overtime on March 14 to local authorities, The Beijing News reported.
The Chinese hashtag that in English is #governmentrefusestoworkovertimeMarch 14 has been viewed more than 640 million times on Weibo, China’s Twitter.
More than 20,000 comments were left on the website, with most users supporting the government’s refusal.
“You let others work extra hours to benefit you so that you can get married on a so-called lucky day. Who do you think you are?” wrote one person.
“I think selecting a right person is more important than selecting a right date to marry,” another commentator said.
Some couples from Guangzhou, in Guangdong province in the country’s south, said they also wanted to register their marriage on March 14, after failing to secure a spot on Valentine’s Day, February 14, because it fell during the week-long Lunar New Year holiday.
In Chinese, the pronunciation of certain numbers when put together sounds like expressions of love and hold a particular fascination for many residents.
It is common practice for men to send red envelopes containing 520 yuan (US$80) to their girlfriends or wives because the number, when spoken, sounds like “I love you”. For that reason, May 20 is a highly popular date also for couples to get married.
The number nine means “eternal” in Chinese culture, so September 9 of each year sees a stampede of couples saying “I do” across the country.

Male topless models serving in Chinese hotpot restaurant turn shop into viral hit
Over the past two months, between six and eight male waiters strut around shirtless in the restaurant in Xian, the capital of the northwestern Shaanxi province, from 5pm to 11pm every day.
The muscled waiters are all part-time models so are happy to pose for photos or videos with guests, who often invite the men to join them for dinner.
“These male waiters are all good-looking and are in good shape,” Ma Yu, the restaurant owner, said. “I hope to bring visual enjoyment and a pleasant experience to all the customers.”
Ma said takings were up since the quirky marketing strategy was introduced, with women making up a majority of the restaurant’s client base.
However, the use of the shirtless male models has attracted a mixed response online.
“It’s nothing wrong that people on one side are OK to expose themselves while those on the other side like to consume,” wrote one person on social media site bilibili.com.
Another user wasn’t happy, saying: “It’s more or less disgusting. I can smell their underarm odour.”
A reader at news portal 163.com said topless male waiters should be banned. “Sometimes kids will eat in the restaurant. The existence of topless waiters will affect kids’ values towards both genders,” the reader wrote.

The company that ‘don’t like to work’

A government department has told a Chinese advertisement and cultural activities design company to change its name because it translates to “don’t like to work” in English.
Jiu Bu Ai Shang Ban, based in Wuhan, in Hubei province, central China, caught the public’s attention after officials from the local administration said its name was not in line with the new Enterprise Name Registration and Management rule and would reflect on it badly, the Yangtze Daily reported.
The rule, which came into effect this month, stipulates that a company’s name should not use words that could damage public interest or social order, oppose customs, be malicious or mislead the public.
Ye Qing, a professor from the Zhongnan University of Economics and Law in Wuhan, said he agreed with the authority’s ruling, as the name constituted “bad guidance” for society, the newspaper reported.
“It lacks positive energy,” said one user on Weibo. But many internet users do not agree with the decision.
“It’s none of the authority’s business,” wrote another Weibo user. “This name does not oppose the government. It is neither pornographic nor violent. I don’t understand why it is not proper enough.”
Another person said: “Why did the government require them to change the name? Does it mean the authorities forbid people to hate work?”
Liu Han, the company’s owner, told the newspaper that he would follow the order to change his company’s name.
