how did the trip go? anyone know how the trip went? i just gotta say that an brenden lai knows how to make some serious cash, he gets his friend in CHINA to teach a swrod form and gathers a ton of heads and puts a crazy travel package together!! great business. Brenden lai talks to travel agencies you know and says " yeah man i got 80 people here who want roundtrip tickets to china to learn some sword fom and how much you get me a price on that for ? " he probalby be gettin tickets for like 400$ roundtrip and be chargin people lie 800$ roundtrip and that is A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU TO TRAIN WTIH A TRUE MASTER AND TO VIST THE SHAOLIN TEMPLE!! notice man that the key words of marketing here are SHAOLIN TEMPLE, OPPORUTNITY, TRUE MASTER" but man that's where it begins, hotels are cheap in china man it's cheap there but lai chrages foos like 40 bucks a head and make slike 20 off each person and that' for a night man, crap, then the travel, train ghetto train rides, he chares more money whoooooooo!! to the innocnet people wthat dont nkow any better n this stufff they think'MASTER BRENDLAN LAI is giviing american s a great opporutnity to learn china's treasur eand visit chians pasttiem by organizing this tour to make it easier for everyone and he is promoting the art of kung fu, wow a great man" Smart people like me would say this guy knows how to make money and knows how to make a lot of it son

I've been to China many times, hotels are not that cheap if you are staying in a nice hotel. Also they have 2 different rates, one for Chinese and a higher one for foreigners. Check out the prices for plane tickets yourself. Depending what time of year you fly it can cost alot more.
I do agree with you about learning forms over there. So you learn a form, did they teach you the 2 person set to it? the applications or counters to it? Yes, that is a ripp-off but if you look at the big picture it is a nice experience to go there and see the Shaolin Temple and have the travel experience,see different cultures and try different foods.
If you want to go on your own your best bet is to stay at a University hotel, the Universities have accomadations for foreign guests to stay. It is a lot less expensive that way.

You just have a comment for everything, don't you? What is your problem with Master Brendan Lai? In the past, you have often criticized his abilities as a martial artist. Now you want to criticize him on his business as well? Do you know the man? Have you met him? Spoke to him? You have said yourself you have never seen the man in person. You judge his abilities based on a video of him. Why do you insist on trying to tarnish a man who has done so much for martial arts internationally especially for our Northern Praying Mantis system? What have you done to promote the Chinese Martial Arts? Yeah, maybe the package is more than one can arrange privately. But I know I certainly would not know how to arrange a trip like that. I do not know how to contact different Mantis masters in China and convince them to teach me. If you feel you can provide the same service at a cheaper cost to us Americans, then go ahead and do so. Otherwise, just leave the man alone. He has bills to pay like the rest of us.

The last time I looked, this is America, the land of capitalism, not socialism or communism. If he provides his time and expertise and even takes care of the annoying details of arrangements, planning and tour guide (this last is the most tedious of all in my opinion), I certainly think he is entitled. Nothing is for free in this world, despite what you might think, word. And unless you can do the job better, cheaper and more efficiently with your numerous contacts, making nasty cracks at somebody else's efforts is definitely uncalled for.

Word--i think its about time to give Brandan Lai a break. yes, we all know Brandan is a very smart business man, sometimes, he is very greedy, as matter of fact, i know he paid US$5 for a sword in China and he sold it for $300 in US. So that's Brandan Lai, a money hungry Jew.
On the other hand, there are many cheap baster students think they can learn kung fu for free, always complain paying too much for their lessons,
and they have no respect for their sifus as well as the art.

There hasn't been much interest in either the February or June trips, so I don't think that anyone has gone, or is going. Sifu Lai will be teaching in Brazil for the next few months.

Regarding applications - Zhang Bing Dou did teach applications when visiting the US previously. Also, the sword seminars on the China trip last year covered applications. The mantis teachers there played around with chin na and other applications during breaks in teaching sword as well.

As far as kung fu and business, I know of instances where Sifu Lai taught students without accepting tuition fees... so go figure.

So about bad mouthing challengers... is this just hearsay, or is there a specific incident? I've not known Sifu Lai to make such comments about challengers.

If you are refering to the Wah lum tournament he went to, he only taught a fraction of the form and very basic applications to it.
Ever wonder why he didn't do a mantis set for the Masters demo????
As far as learning from him in China, they will show you a few applications but not the 2 person drills,counters and the 2 person sets.
Next time you go see if he will show you the 2 person set to bung bu.(he doesn't even know it).
I learned his plum flower sets 1-5 and then had to have them corrected by Master Shr jeng jong of Taiwan who's lineage is from Lee Kwan Shan(not the wah lum one). Master Zhang only trained with Master Lee Kwan Shan for 2 years as a child and then Lee fled to Taiwan.

Master Shr has studied under many Masters in Taiwan and China.
He began his training at 15 with Master Chen Kai(white crane) and then studied Northern long fist from both well known Master JIang Suen Shr and Wu Xiao Lin from Qing Tao Shandong. He learned Tai Chi,Shing Yi and Ba Kua from a Hubei Master Chang Shr Rong. He studied Norther Lo Han from Master Kong Wen tou.
He studied 7 star mantis with Shandong Province Master Shen Rong Tzai and also Master Ju Jing Chang. Also from Qingdao he studied Plum flower and san hwae jiou juan hwan yang chi kung conditioning methods from Master Leh Shing Fu.
He also studied 7 star mantis with both Master Hao Geng Sheng and Wang Yin Yi from Shandong Province.
He studied Sectet door mantis from Master Chang Deh Juae from Chi Shia County, Shandong Province. From Master Lee Hong Jiay(disciple of Shandong's Lee Kwan Shan)he studied Plum Flower mantis ,spear,Chi jung and tai chi.
He studied 6 harmony and eight step(wrestling hands) from Chang Shiang Shan and Master Wae Xiao Tang of Shandong.
He studied plum flower mantis under Master Liao Jing Wai and Keelung Master Bo Song Shan. Master Wang Jiay Shun from Jiang An county Szechuan Province tauhgt him Long fist and fighting techniques and conditioning methods. Master Wang also detailed his form ,precision, control,agility, and harmonization of skill and spirit of the art. Last of his well know masters is a native of Hong Kong , Master Jow Ju She who is said to be the worlds most high level and profound masters of his time, taught him Tai Chi praying mantis.
Master Shr has original notes written by Master Lee Kwan Shan as well as his medal that Master Lee won in a spear competion(1946 i believe?)
I can have my Shr fu write more about Lee Kwan Shan as he is a disciple of Master Shr's and also has studied with Lee Kwan Shan's disciple Master Lee Hong Jiay.
