Green Power Ranger Jason David Frank

A few years ago actor Jason David Frank was used to hearing the familiar sound of fans yelling, "Go, go Power Rangers!" but now he's ready to hear the roar of a different crowd.

The former action star from the hit series "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" has officially made the move to mixed martial arts, and while training with UFC lightweight Melvin Guillard, he hopes to make his real fighting experience as successful as he did on television.

Frank signed on with Suckerpunch Entertainment recently and hopes to make his professional debut in the very near future.

"I was supposed to fight in 2007, but it fell through. In truth, I’ve wanted to put the work in until I’m ready," Frank said in an interview from the Suckerpunch website. "I know I have a target on my back. Everyone is going to want to beat up the Green Ranger. But I am no Kimbo; I’ve been training for a very long time. I wanted to get in there before, but I got injured. But I’ll be ready when the time comes."

The actor-turned-fighter is adding a ground game to what he believes is already an impressive stand-up resume, but he knows it's a long road to not only becoming a mixed martial artist, but a successful mixed martial artist.

"My style was missing the ground fighting. I have my blue belt in BJJ from Gracie Baja now, but we needed to have that ground game integrated into Tose Kune Do. There was a blank there. So we added wrestling, BJJ, etc., to it," Frank said. "Melvin Guillard has really helped add the wrestling. I needed to get with someone who could put it all together for me, and that was Saul Soliz. And he’s done it. He’s a good, hardcore trainer."

Proud of his time as the Green Ranger on the popular television show, Frank is ready to move onto new goals, and he hopes to conquer MMA the same way he did television.

"Just to go out there and do my best, and prove that I’m a real fighter," Frank said about his goals in MMA. "I’m not looking for any titles specifically. Ultimately, I want to give my fans something to watch and be proud of."

Jason David Frank is well-known to kids and pop culture fans as the longest-tenured Mighty Morphin Power Ranger. Many young MMA fans grew up watching him as one of the Power Rangers, and most have uttered the phrase, “It’s Morphin time!” at one point or another. But Jason’s martial arts skills go beyond stunt doubles and dummies; he’s been training martial arts very seriously since he was 12 years old. He’s even created his own form of combat fighting, called Tose Kune Do. Now 37 years old, Jason has decided to step into the world of MMA.
Training at renowned MMA trainer Saul Soliz’s camp, Metro Fight Club, as well at his own gym, Rising Sun Karate, Jason’s main training partner is the UFC’s Melvin Guillard, who has helped to transition his martial arts game to MMA. He’s also been training with Mike “The Greek” Bronzoulis in anticipation of his debut in mixed martial arts. I recently spoke with Jason to find out about his feelings on his past with the Rangers, and his move to MMA.

Phil Lanides: Does your experience with the show help or hurt you?
Jason David Frank: As many fans as I have right now, if you look at the demographics of 18-34, which is the MMA demographic, I have that fan base from there. Looking at my age, a short-term career will be good for me because I will be able to give my fans what they want. I went to an anime convention recently, and they were asking me about fighting. They were all over 18 years-old. So I think there will be a lot of interest in my entrance into the sport. As long as the fights look good, I think it’ll be great.

PL: Tose Kune Do (The Way of the Fighting Fists) is your own style of fighting. Tell us about that.
JDF: I modified and adjusted [disarming] gun techniques. People don’t hold guns like they used to on the streets, so I took different moves, got away from the politics of martial arts, and came up with Tose Kune Do. We’re very serious at my gym; you have to earn your belt at my school. Bruce Lee, who created Jute Keen Do, is an influence of mine, and I like to follow his philosophy. There are many great martial arts out there. But when the time comes, the question is whether or not you can take care of yourself and your family on the streets. That’s the real test. Jute Keen Do is the way of the intercepting fists, focused more on defense. I wanted to cut out the stuff that doesn’t work. I was doing MMA, in essence, before MMA became big. MMA is the philosophy I had in 1994 when I invented Tose Kune Do. We were doing sprawl and brawl at that time, and I’m excited to see how my fighting art will do in competitive MMA.

PL: Is it applicable to MMA?

The guy who used to play the Green and White Ranger on the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is trying to fight with creatures from this planet -- dude is an MMA fighter now.

35-year-old Jason David Frank -- who used to fight inside a friggin' Dragonzord -- just told MMAweekly.com he's hoping to fight inside the UFC octagon.

The 6th degree Black Belt just signed a deal with a new management team and hopes to get in the ring pretty soon. We'll let you know when he actually schedules a fight.

The Power Rangers brand is one that continues to mix things up and garner a legion of fans in its 20 plus years on US television, but there is not denying that the series that started it all The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers remains the most iconic. Through this shows run there have been numerous actors stepping into the varying uniforms but none are more popular than the Green Ranger and martial artist himself Jason David Frank. He has more appearances in the series than any other actor and to this day remains the most popular in the series and on the convention circuit. While Power Rangers may be his initial claim to fame, there is so much more to this Master martial artist, actor, businessman and family man. I had the pleasure to sit down to discuss the latest season of his reality show My Morphing Life and so much more with this icon of the industry.

Bobby: Before getting into My Morphing Life, can you tell us a little about how you got started in the martial arts?

Jason: My dad was involved in martial arts and always talked about it and I just walked by a karate school one day, tried it and got hooked. It was one of those things that I didn’t want to give up and I put in as much as I could into my school that was called Red Dragon Karate. I got pretty attached to my instructors and even though we moved like an hour away from the dojo, my mom would drive me every day to get me up there. It was just something I didn’t want to quite so I stuck with it.

Bobby: Obviously everyone knows you from the Power Rangers and conventions, but how did My Morphing Life come together?

Jason: Me, my wife and daughter live an exciting life I think. We sky dive, my wife fights, karate and so it was just a whole bunch of stuff. I started it on YouTube just to share my life with fans with 8-10 minute shows and I wasn’t really interested in selling the show, I just wanted to share my life with the fans. Then ConTV came up which is a network that has 10 hours of original content plus cult movies and old school TV shows and Wizard World’s John Macaluso, a friend of mine that owns Wizard World is also partners with Cinedigm who distributes the new ConTV app and network. We started filming and did 10 episodes, the fans loved it so we did season 2 and it worked out great. I did break my foot base jumping, filmed the behind the scenes of Superhero Beat Down, filmed with my parents in Hawaii that just happen to fall in place where an older lady fell and helped her out a bit to get to the hospital, filmed with my Power Ranger buddies, Lou Ferigno, Michael Rooker, Manu Bennett and we just put this together and John Macaluso came up and said this was perfect for the fans because we cover a lot of con material and the next thing you know we launched season two which you can check out the first episode of the new season of My Morphing Life now and also check out the complete first season.

Bobby: I loved the first season when you guys went to Thailand and ironically I just went to train and get my Kru certification with Master Toddy in December.

Jason: Oh, that’s great; Master Toddy is a great guy. My wife got her Kru under Master Toddy and fought in Thailand that was exciting and frightening at the same time, but kicked some butt. It was awesome.

Bobby: I had interviewed him in 2013 and that is when I found you had trained there as well. I decided to go back to train there and it was those episodes of My Morphing Life that made me more comfortable after seeing more what to expect.

Jason: That’s cool, I used to train with Master Toddy here in Vegas where I am now and got my Kru up there, but then got my Ajarn there in Thailand. Master Toddy and I are pretty close and he trusts me with the curriculum so I have been re-writing some of it putting it on paper so that the martial art Muay Thai for the Kru’s and Ajarn’s can understand it even better. I have been working really hard on that. I have a training website called TrainMeJDF.com that people can subscribe. It’s more for personal development hub if you want to call it to help people get through everyday life stuff. It’s been really exciting to get to do that.

Bobby: How do you decide which situations in your life to film as an episode?

Jason: That’s a good question. We started in season number one and I did my sky diving thing and it was really just to film. We had an episode in Hawaii and didn’t know what to film and my parents are funny people so we were just going to go out there for a family reunion thing and the older lady fell and her leg was bleeding and almost half off. She found out who I was and now stays in contact with my mom, but episodes just fell into place. The camera just followed us around. Season three for example I filmed in Australia, filmed with Johnny Bosh, and wrestled an alligator and things just kind of fell into place. I was kind of blessed to have a storyline because everyone did not have a storyline, but it all just kind of fell into place. It was definitely exciting and we can’t wait for it to air.

Bobby: So I just saw the haunted mansion episode

Jason: Yeah, the Haunted Plantation. We just wanted to film an episode and things happened believe it or not, that was real. Grant Wilson, who is a friend of mine from Ghost Hunters he was the mentor for us on Skype, kind of like a Zordon on the computer to help us through all this stuff, that was an exciting episode. Episode 1 is in Puerto Rico where we go sky diving with Steve Cardenas the red ranger. Things just happen, I happen to be late, Tammy crashed the car and it was just stuff that just kind of happened on the show. Tammy’s a bad driver.

Bobby: I’m starting to see a pattern from some of the videos you post on Facebook.

Jason: When I first met her I had a Porsche and she was behind me and rear ended me, but I was real nice about it because I was still trying to be her boyfriend, but that pretty much follows her around. She crashed my truck, my BMW and backs into things, but she has been driving decent lately. She is here in the back hitting me right now telling me not to tell you, but it’s the truth.

Bobby: Of course you have already been famous between your iconic status as the Green Ranger and your convention appearances, but you have always had your family and faith right there beside you. Has any of this stuff with My Morphing Life putting your personal life out there changed anything else in your daily life?

Jason: Well, my personal life is pretty much already out there with Instagram and Facebook. I put a lot of personal things out there because I want people to know that I am real person and I deal with problems just like everyone else. Yes I am a Christian and I deal with issues. I face my fears and issues and overcome them. People know I am real and I don’t really hide things. I don’t put the bad stuff out there, no one wants to hear about that, but it is fun and the fans are really engaged. My mom talks to all of my fans and are just blessed to have them.

Bobby: In relation to your faith, you also have the Jesus Didn’t Tap clothing line. Can you tell us a little bit about where that came from?

Jason: I just wanted to come up with the first Christian clothing line. Every fighter thanks God afterwards and prays to God that they win and don’t get beat up, so I wanted to come up with the first Christian clothing line like Tap Out and we represent a lot of UFC fighters. We are in partnership with a company called Bull Shirts, which is the multi-million dollar company that deals with all the baseball and football teams. We have some new partners called Snoring Gorilla who are marketing people who are working to get the clothing line into other stores and things like that. We want to go more mainstream with it because God is a mainstream hero. That is pretty much what we do, I step behind the brand. It is definitely not a Power Ranger; it’s the Jesus Didn’t Tap brand. God is the bigger hero than anyone and that is what I have done with Jesus Didn’t Tap.

Bobby: Of course speaking with you we cannot leave Power Rangers out of the conversation. With the new movie coming out is there any chance of you making an appearance or anything you can tell us about it?

Jason: I talked to Saban recently and they did hire a new director which is great. It is going forward, but it is just a really secretive script right now. I don’t know my involvement yet, but I have a huge fan base and they definitely want to get me involved. One way or another, whether I am involved or not I want them to take care of the brand and do it justice for both the older audience and the younger audience. That’s what I am excited to see and I cannot wait.

Bobby: I know fans had been anticipating you’re two other Bat in the Sun projects; can you give us an update on them?

Jason: The Super Hero Beat down: The Green Ranger vs, Ryu was just released and available now. The White Ranger vs. Scorpion was great too and we got a ton of hits on that one so we are excited to release that. Bat in the Sun is the executive producer for My Morphing Life so I am very excited and blessed to work with those people. We are also doing an original TV show called Taz Kayden: Operation Black Unicorn which is a web series. We are currently in negotiations with a couple of networks to carry that TV show.

Bobby: You do a lot of convention and are very approachable, but one of your most regular appearances are with the Wizard world tour.

Jason: Yeah, Wizard World is a great show where I am able to do a lot of Q&A’s, karate classes, get autographs and take pictures, but I want people to know that there is no obligation at my table. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have money come to the table I want to meet you. I have some free giveaways to give to people. I care about my fans and this is not my job, I don’t need to do the conventions, I do them for fun and I want to continue having fun in it. I joined Wizard World because they are really great at what they do and they are very fan oriented and I am excited to work with them.

Bobby: I want to commend you on that, I have worked a lot of shows as an artist and helping out other companies like Galactic Productions and not a lot of the celebrities are as approachable as that.

Jason: Thank you buddy I appreciate that. I spend a lot of time on social media and feel that you have to invest into any relationship. You have to invest into what is called an emotional bank account because it is not about money; it’s about investing in someone. I invest into my fans emotional bank account, so that when I need a favor I can withdrawal a favor. I don’t want to say most celebrities, but there are not a lot that invest in their fans emotional account. They get their financial account, but for me it is more about the emotional bank account on any day and I feel like I need to deposit and deposit so that when I need to take out a withdrawal and say check out CONtv, it’s a give and take relationship not just take, take, take. That is my outlook on life in pretty much anything and I know I have a lot of favors with people because I am a very giving guy. I give a lot to charities and don’t expect anything back, but I know karma will come back to take care of me and also know that my fans will take care of me. They are very awesome and relentless fans and if I want something they will make sure it gets done. That’s what I love about my fans, but also I love depositing into their emotional bank accounts if that makes sense.

Bobby: As a fan of myself of the Power Rangers and a martial artist for over 30 years, I followed you coming up and now the Master Toddy thing feels like it came full circle for me getting to speak with you and I really appreciate you taking the time to speak with me.

Jason: Thank you man, I appreciate the interviews and people like you to get the word out. I am on a mission to tell people to do what you want in life and never listen to people that say you can’t do it. Always say you can, believe in yourself and invest in yourself because no one else is going to do it unless you do it. When I bring it to a hundred people it’s just those hundred people, but when I bring it to media, magazines and things like you guys you are able to reach out to millions of people. It doesn’t really matter who you are, I have a basic theory that I think is also true in martial arts, some people ask me, “Who are the interview people and how do you know they are real people of not?” You shouldn’t worry about that, you treat every interview the same regardless of how big a fan base they have and you treat everyone the same. When I teach a martial arts class I teach it the same whether there is one person or a thousand people, it doesn’t make a difference, it’s the same energy. That’s the way I put it into my life at my conventions, with TrainingMeJDF.com. I put that theory in with everything. With Bat in the Sun, I didn’t know how many fans he had, I didn’t really care. He was a good guy and I said “You know what buddy; I am going to help you out.” I appeared in it and realized it was a big production with millions of fans and that is just a perk that when you can do something for someone and get something like that back when you didn’t expect it. That’s what I believe and want to thank you for spreading the message to my fans. It is a win, win relationship.

Bobby: I appreciate it and hope to get to run into you at a future convention.

In a scene that sounds more like a movie plot than reality, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Green Power Ranger/MMA fighter Jason David Frank got into a heated altercation at Comic Con on Saturday.

The two stars have had an ongoing beef since Van Damme and Frank exchanged words back in 1995 at the “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie” premiere. Frank tried to settle their score by publicly challenging JC to a fight in 2010, but nothing ever happened … until yesterday.

Here’s what went down:

Frank tells The Blast he was asked to share his green room with JC and his 20-person entourage at La Mole Comic Con in Mexico City. Despite their checkered past, Frank agreed.

Frank says he grew suspicious when Van Damme’s handler approached him and asked him to take a photo with Van Damme.

Thinking Van Damme might just want to bury the hatchet, Frank went to meet up with him in the green room.

That’s when the Power Ranger says he realized it was “all a setup.” Frank tells us JC approached him with cameras rolling and demanded Frank apologize for calling him out in 2010 and said if he wanted a fight, “Let’s throw down.”

You can see the aggression in the video as the two stars beef up on each other, waiting for someone to throw the first punch. Frank even name drops his buddy Chuck Zito, who legendarily KO’d Van Damme at a topless bar in the 90s.

Van Damme and Frank both agreed to an MMA-style brawl and the Power Ranger grabbed the action star and put him in a headlock against the wall.

It was over before it even started — Frank says Van Damme froze up, seemingly surprised Frank was actually trying to fight him.

We’re told they argued back and forth for a few more minutes and, eventually, security stepped in and broke it up.

It’s unclear if Van Damme plans on releasing his footage of the altercation.

Jason David Frank had a run-in with one of his idols over the weekend, but it did not go like he hoped, and resulted in an impromptu fight. Now he's setting the record straight on what happened.

Frank was appearing at a comic con event in Mexico, an event that Jean Claude Van Damme was also appearing at. The two weren't best of friends before, and as Frank details what happened in their crazy altercation, the two won't be hanging out anytime soon.

"The promoter contacted me and asked if Jean Claude Van Damme could borrow my green room and share the room," Frank told FloCombat. "The first thing in my head was yeah, he's a big star, he doesn't need to ask. I don't hold a grudge. So I said yeah, I'll share it no big deal."

Frank actually challenged Van Damme to a fight years ago, but Van Damme never responded. "I never expected us to talk about old times or anything because it was so long ago and there was no response [about the fight]," Frank said. "I didn't even think he knew about it. So they asked me to use the room and no big deal."

Those old issues though would resurface after Frank returned from his Comic Con duties. After spending several hours sighing autographs and taking pictures, he returned to his room to find it blocked off completely, despite it being his room. The promoter for the event got Frank a different room until Van Damme and his entourage left, but right after things went downhill.

Someone from Van Damme's group asked if Frank could come and take a picture with him before they left. Frank had no issue with doing so, but once he got in the room things changed.

"All of his crew comes out and everybody has their cameras out and he has this professional camera, I'm not sure if he's shooting a reality show or what, but all the cameras are on and he comes out of the room and straight up to me and he goes 'hey you like writing articles about people, you want to beat my ass?" Frank said recounting the altercation. "You gonna apologize for that?' and I said nope. He goes 'you think you can still beat my ass?' and I said yeah."

The Fight

According to Frank, Van Damme pushed for a fight. "He said 'OK let's do it right now'. I mean I thought it was all a joke but his security was all filming this and I heard them talking in the back and it was clear that he was trying to punk me. Either make me look bad or throw a punch first," Frank said.

Frank obliged and clinched him up. "I clinched him up and pushed him back, not in a violent way, in a respectful way that if you want to do this, let's do this," Frank said. "The whole time everybody is filming me and no security people are coming but everybody in his entourage is filming. So I clinched up with him and put him against the wall and he's talking and he froze up and I raised my knee and said 'do you want to this?' and he doesn't do anything so I let go."

That did not deter Van Damme from still talking. "I backed away and he starts saying 'well be careful what you say, you never know what I'm gonna do'. So that's when it escalated and his security guy came in and broke it up," Frank said.

Frank is positive that the whole ordeal was staged to make him look bad, and according to Frank Van Damme got aggressive again after security got in the room.

"Security came and broke it up and that's when he starts saying 'f*** you' and I told him come on. Why don't you come in the cage or the ring? Why are you doing this at Comic Con?" Frank said. "And then his security is trying to get my phone to take away the footage."

There were plenty of cameras around, so there is footage of the altercation. "My point is if he has all the footage and it's gonna make him look really bad. It doesn't belong at Comic Con," Frank said. "It belongs in a ring or a cage. I'm not bitter but he's acting childish."

Frank was not looking for a fight that day, but he also is not about to back down from one.

"I was on edge thinking he's going to fight right now. He was trying to punk me so I got ready," Frank said. "I wasn't the aggressor but he showed no response. If somebody grabbed me behind the neck, I'd knock them out. I did that and he didn't do anything. Security didn't break it up. He's got his whole entourage around us and they looked hungry. But when I threw that knee that didn't even touch him and he cowered up."

Frank says the setup was to bully him, and that isn't something he will let happen. "When I let him go, he starts popping off and then when security got all around him he starts popping off even more," Frank said. "I just told him don't punk me. He was trying to punk me and bully me and I don't do that. I'm not going to get punked like that and I think he was shocked that I stood up to him," Frank said. "I was never bitter and I'm still not bitter but I'm a fighter."

Who knows, maybe this will lead to an actual Jason David Frank vs Jean Claude Van Damme MMA match down the line.

You’d think being a Power Ranger would be badass enough, but Green Ranger Jason David Frank took his tough guy cred to the next level on Saturday when he was promoted to 8th-degree black belt in karate.

For all of you who haven’t spent time in a dojo, a black belt is considered the ultimate karate achievement. On top of that, the martial arts have “degrees” of black belt that indicate a heightened level of accomplishment that can take decades to reach.

To put it in perspective, Vladimir Putin is a 9th-degree black belt. Chuck Norris is an 8th-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Translation: Jason David Frank is Chuck Norris-level deadly.

Frank’s belt black promotion ceremony went down last night in New Jersey at Rising Sun Karate Academy.

Frank tells The Blast it took him 40 years to get to this level. He says he has been training since he was only 4 years old; he’s now 44.

Aside from a fancy new belt and bragging rights, the Green Ranger was also honored with a new martial arts title: Hanshi Frank.

Frank says “Han” means example, model, etc. while “Shi” means gentleman, samurai or warrior.

Hopefully Jean-Claude Van Damme remembers this next time he tries to throw down with the Green Ranger.

Actor Jason David Frank — known for his role as the Green Ranger and White Ranger in the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers — made a special guest appearance at Laredo Wrestling Alliance’s “Let’s Say Goodbye” event. David Frank announced he will step inside the squared circle for the promotion in 2019.

The Laredo Wrestling Alliance’s 2018 was one of its best years yet. The local independent wrestling company, which has been around since 2010, saw stars such as ACH, Laredo Kid and Shane Strickland come down and challenge LWA Champion Daga for the top crown. Yet at Let’s Say Goodbye on Saturday, LWA ended the year on a high note and is ready to morph into 2019.

Weeks before its last event of the year, LWA announced that actor Jason David Frank — who played the famed Green and White Rangers on the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers television show — was set to make a special guest appearance. David Frank sat ringside for the last two matches of the event, but it was the main event when the actor got involved.

LWA United Pure Champion and Laredoan Ricky Swayze took on Brysin Scott. But the challenger wasn’t too pleased about the former TV star being at the event. He got on the microphone and claimed he was the top attraction, not David Frank. And toward the end of the match, the two got into an altercation as David Frank punched Scott out before he was held back by LWA security.

Once Scott was in the back, David Frank got on the mic. He said a few words and announced that he will be returning to LWA, but not for another guest appearance. Next time, he will step in the squared circle for the first time in his career to take on Scott.

"I’ve always been interested in stepping into a wrestling ring," David Frank told LMT. "I don’t do this stuff. I do MMA. Just to learn this stuff is cool. I went to WWE, but just to see this passion in these fighters, everyone is hungry and everyone wants to be the best they can. I like that."

David Frank credits Ronda Rousey and CM Punk for his interest in crossing over to the wrestling industry. He’s watched Rousey succeed in less than a year in WWE and Punk’s transition from one of wrestling’s top stars to fighting twice in UFC.

With David Frank making an appearance, LWA owner Rey Chavarria and promoter Dan Martinez ordered 300 seats — the most they have ever needed for one show.

LWA originally set out all 300 chairs. But by the time of the second match, the promotion set out another 100 that became filled while a handful of additional fans stood in every corner.

"This was the largest crowd we have ever had," Chavarria said.

With the addition of David Frank, Chavarria expects huge numbers for LWA in 2019.

While every fan in attendance chanted “JDF! JDF!” when the original Power Ranger theme song played and the 45-year-old actor made his entrance, they also cheered for the local wrestlers competing. They cheered when Khiry became the new No. 1 contender for the RISE Division title after defeating Israel, and they booed when What-A-Team was cheated out of victory against the Hybrid Brusiers — who are from San Antonio.

But it was all about David Frank Saturday. After the event, hundreds of Laredoans waited in line to get a picture with the famed Power Ranger. With all the support he experienced, David Frank couldn’t be happier to make LWA his wrestling home.

"I love going to South Texas Comic Con," David Frank said. "I’ve wanted to do a Power Morphicon down here. We are doing one in Texas, and I have been wanting to do one in Laredo. So, when (LWA) called me, they soon asked what my price was, and I had told them I would come down for free.

"I feel like for me and my fan base, you are never too big to attend events like this or come to towns that most people don’t go to. I’m happy to be here."

While Saturday’s event was a success in the promotion’s minds, all they can think about is what 2019 is going to be like. Especially with David Frank now in the fold.

"If that’s not a big deal, what else is there to say about wrestling in Laredo?," Chavarria said. "This is the place to be.

"The Green Ranger is wrestling for the first time in LWA. Just listen to that over again. Laredo isn’t known for that. Now it’s going to be known for the home of LWA and where Jason David Frank made his wrestling debut."
