In another thread, I brought up the topic of traditional training and fighting maxims. So in the interest of training Traditional Kung-Fu for fighting, let's discuss some of your faveorites.
(I'll start)

'Yat Dahm, Yee Lik, Sam Gung-Fu"
Courage first, Strength/power second, Technique third.

we all know that you may have great technique, and even strength and power, but without the courage (guts) to get in there, it's useless.
Likewise, we all have met that guy who has no technique, or power, but is a sick bastid, and will fight like a wolverine.

In my opinion, I train courage first. All of the beginner students learn attack sequences-aggressive combinations.
Everything moves forward. Attack in defense. Attack the attack.we don't block, we call them ,"Defensive Strikes" as the "blocks" are designed to inflict pain and damage.
Sidestepping is introduced only after these techniques are absorbed.
Stepping back is taught last-and very sparingly-if at all. There is a difference between adjusting, and retreating.
This is in alignment with what we discussed in the other thread about a fighter will fall back on what he trained first, and what he trained most.

even though Sun Zi is about how to wage war and win.

but similar principles apply to personal combat.

1. dao, we have to be in the right/just first.

2. tian (heaven), timing, weather and other conditions/factors--

3. di (earth), place, relative position--

4. jiang (general/command/leader), we have to be brave, intelligent, planning, calculating--- we are leaders of ourself.

5. fa (law, discipline) we follow certain rules/principles and unyielding, so the benefits of the rules will give us advantage--

most important of all deception

war or one on one combat is about trickery or deception.

he who calculate more will win.

... In my opinion, I train courage first.

Old saying also said, "一力勝十會 (Yi Li Sheng Shi Hui) - strength can defeat 10 best techniques". IMO, I like to train "力 (Li) - strength" first. If I feel that I'm stronger than my opponent, it will give me the courage that I need.

Lin Kuen But Lin Gung,
Do Lo Yat Chung."
If you train Martial Arts but not body conditioning(strength, flexibility, hei-gung)
you will have nothing when you are older.

This is definately true as we see people who have trained when they are younger and still maintain flexibility and muscle density in old age.
I am 52, and I can do head high kicks without a warm-up.

"The more one sweats in training,
The less one bleeds in times of war."

Train More, Bleed less.

I heard a great little Shuai-Jiao motto, I think it may have been by someone on this forum,something like,"Gravity never fails, the Earth never misses."
another variation, "In Shuai Jiao, we hit them with the Earth,"
(wow, you think you hit hard? I'll hit you with an entire planet!);)

Manners are very important, and you should always be a perfect host.
When someone arrives at your door, you should rush out to greet him,
help him inside, feed him more than he needs, (an extra serving, a doggie bag) and escort him out the door.

um..you guys get this, don't you?

A field artillery quote I heard a while back...

"When you absolutely must kill every motherf*cker in the grid square (1000 sq. km); accept no substitutions."

And another good one from John Stuart Mill;

"A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. "

this is the third time this guy made the "ching chong chinaman" comment to me. i feel bad for him. i met a lot of skinny white people with kung fu fantasies and bizare personalities. everybody sucks at the beginner everyone can be good if they just start training.
i jsut wanted to say keep on topic but i guess he took it as a insult because he never actually trained any kung fu and just post on the internet and is a aging old skinny man with red hair and lives in the woods with a goat wife

Train with energy? Is this like the comment where you do "free flowing forms" based off of your past life knowledge of martial arts?

It sounds more like an excuse to cover a lack of discipline and a fantasy of being granted some sort of instant knowledge. You won't uncover anything living in PA browsing the web.

Try to stay with the topic.if i try i won't... i will have to do. words are powerful - paying attention and being mindful of how and what words you use takes true focus and discipline... you could equate this piece of spiritual advice with being for beginners only. :p

"Saam lihn siu meng, sahp lihn dai meng"

lit. "3 years little name, 10 years big name";

take home message is that if you train something for 3 years, it is a small achievement; if you are able to persevere in that same training for 10 years, it is a worthy accomplishment;

"Fan yu gung; cho yu jung; jaam yu jong; haang yu fung."
"Sleep like a bow; sit like a bell; stand like a tree; walk like the wind."
If you understand and practice these four things, you have the essence of Taoist practice.

its not really "fun" to learn for most people. i think its very important , because forms dont actually explain your system to you

a good saying is "yi tou gong wei zhu" head training (iron head) is the most basic skill to train
a lot of "advanced" training is beginner training. what kung fu students in america get to learn after 5 or 10 years is what you normally learn in the first month, but i think that way you make less money
