Seriously Ray, we need to pay the rent. And how do we do that in October? Halloween sales (http://www.martialartsmart.com/halloween-costumes.html). The martial arts industry is dwarfed by Halloween costumes sales here in the states and in the current economy, we'll do whatever crossover we can to stay solvent.

See? I'll even play. I can't win obviously. I'm DQed because I work here. But that doesn't mean I can't ninja all your sorry asses. ;)

Now that I like!

I understand the need to pay rent, but I think advertisers would want to spend with you because you have a strong readership. I would hope your readership reads your magazine to stay abreast of current happening in the Kung Fu world (which could be boring and/or lame) or about exciting aspects of its history, real or imagined.

Honestly, there are still a couple old timers around worth talking too, to gain some insight from. And that's just from what I know about in Chinatown. Some teachers here have students competing in MMA-type events, I myself compete there as well as in Vale Tudo.... we claim Kung Fu. To me, that's more interesting than holding a photo contest of wankers dressing up as something they're not. Not to mention that ninpo is a Japanese style vs the Chinese nature of your core competency.

I'm just saying, it kind of turns my stomach. As a consumer, I see ninjas at the news stand I don't even bother. I know that publication is in a different universe than mine. And the martial universe I'm living in -- reality -- is growing by the day.... with a fan base that spends money.

Believe it or not, it's hard to resist a good Kung Fu story. I'd be willing to fly to NY and do a Old Masters story for you. I'm thinking Frank Yee, Robert Chu (though he's west coast now, verdad?), my master David Bond Chan, sifu Milton and Norton Chin, some of their students who fight. Guys like these and their students are the last hope. Coach Ross could be an interesting story too. Fighters are legit. Ninja's are whack.

Just saying.

GeneChing
10-06-2009, 09:17 AM
I hear what your saying Ray. As you know, no one has fought more than me to document traditional old school kung fu masters and modern kung fu fighters transitioning to this new sport of MMA within martial arts publishing. You know that if you've kept up with my writing in our publications. However, ninjas comprise a major part of our economy. If you'll notice, there's always a full-page ninja ad in every issue. That's because we make a decent income selling ninja gear. You'd be surprised how many people train in ninjitsu seriously. When I first came to this company, I was shocked. And I am old enough to have seen the rise and fall of the great ninja craze in the 80's.

You also know that we don't have a lot of outside advertisers. This is because our parent company is Tiger Claw (http://www.tigerclaw.com/home.php), so we don't advertise Tiger Claw competitors. And since Tiger Claw sells a wide selection of gear, that shuts out most of the major clients that might advertise in a martial arts magazine. To give you some perspective, Tiger Claw manufactures its own line of ninja gear. For a while, Tiger Claw also manufactured a line of shuai jiao gear, but it folded because there simply wasn't enough economic support. Tiger Claw also did an analysis (at my personal request) on importing International regulation sanshou gear. It simply was not cost effective at that time. It still isn't for either sport, sad to say.

That all being said, I'm very serious about martial arts, more so than most because it's my bread and butter. It's been my sole source of income for over two decades now. But I'm also serious about having a little fun. After all, if martial arts isn't fun, why bother? Some of us have fun knocking other people out. Some of us have fun posing in ninja outfits. It's all good. To quote Ledger's Joker, 'why so serious?'

As for you contributing an article, you're welcome to do so just like everyone. Here is our submission guidelines (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/about/guidelines.php), for your reference.

On a final note, ninja sales are already up for the month, so that part of this promotion has shown some early promise. We're looking forward to more entries soon.

the problem with ninjas is this:

a: most of them aren't women
b: of the women that are, we don't see enough ninja taco action from them
c: they have a bad habit of attacking one at a time

The Ninjas of the week (ninjette, kill & poseur) are not official entries. They're just for fun, something to get you all inspired. The only official entries are posted by NinjaStar with the heading "NINJA STAR Entry #". So far we're at three, but we're hoping for ninjas to spring out of the shadows on Halloween.

None of our ninjettes wear masks. What would the point of that be? Stop messing with our ninjettes, Lhk.

I knew you had some sort of leather/vinyl/rubber ninja suit in your closet. Just toss on some Tiger Claw shoes (http://www.martialartsmart.com/shoes-martial-art-shoes.html) and you're golden. You can wear your kinky fetish ninja suit, but you just need to rock some Tiger Claw gear too. Right now, I'm trying to talk one of my shimei into posing wearing just a headband (http://www.martialartsmart.com/75-51.html). If I can get her to do it, it will all be worth it.

But seriously, Lhk, you're one of the more recognizable (or should I say infamous forum members so surely that would add to your potential for the final vote. As if you need to be in the mag again....

Ninja wants to beat up senator, gets arrested (http://www.metro.co.uk/weird/article.html?Ninja_wants_to_beat_up_senator,_gets_ arrested&in_article_id=751514&in_page_id=2)
By TOM PHILLIPS - Tuesday, October 13, 2009

Police have arrested a man dressed as a ninja after he was seen standing on a street corner in Connecticut waving nunchucks around and shouting that he wanted to beat up a senator.

Authorities were called after several witnesses reported seeing the thirty-year-old ninja standing on a corner in the town of Vernon, Conn., yelling about his desire to beat up Senator Joe Lieberman.

Police turned up with Taser guns in anticipation of having to subdue the ninja, but that he became polite and co-operative when challenged.

Lieberman was Al Gore's vice-presidential candidate in the controversial 2000 US elections, but later lost a Democratic Party primary for his Senate seat over his support for the Iraq war. He won the election standing as an independent, and eventually endorsed Republican John McCain for President in 2008.

The ninja was taken to a local hospital for psychiatric evaluation, and later released.

I wonder where they get their ninja gear (http://www.martialartsmart.com/ninja-styles.html)...

Ninja: They thrash metal, then slip away (http://www.oregonlive.com/music/index.ssf/2009/10/ninja_they_thrash_metal_then_s.html)
By Special to The Oregonian

Normally, you wouldn't expect to see a band of fully costumed ninja assassins enjoying a meal of light snacks and warm sake in the back room of the ****tail lounge at the upscale Hotel Lucia.

But normally, you wouldn't see ninja anywhere -- ever -- until it was too late. That's the way of the shadowy ninjutsu fighting art: The practitioners materialize seemingly from nowhere, do their damage and fade off, leaving little more than broken bodies in their wake.

These particular ninja have been involved in clandestine strikes on the streets of Portland lately, except they've replaced the traditional weaponry of katana swords and shuriken throwing stars with battery-powered amplifiers and a tiny drum set. And instead of pounding enemies with chop-socky, they seem to prefer a slightly less destructive mode of fighting: super-intense thrash metal music.

Other than that, the hit-and-run routines of local rock band Ninja are about the same as the conventional ninja invasion. No warnings, no explanations, no quarter given, and they don't stick around to sign autographs. Ninja the band may tend to break more eardrums than skulls, but the overall effect is still fairly devastating.

At the Hotel Lucia's Bo Restobar, the five members of Ninja submit to some nonconfrontational questions (you wouldn't want to get these guys angry at you) with good grace, with most of the queries circling the essential "why?" of the situation. Why ninjas? Why metal?

"I had wanted to do a heavier band project," says Flying V Ninja -- what, you thought these guys had names like "Dustin" or "Josh"? -- "and it came to me in a dream to be in a band that dressed as ninjas."

Christo Bas Ninja interjects with, "Being anonymous means there's no ego involved, no sense of self. We can walk down the street after a doing a guerilla show without being hassled by fans or cops when it's all over. It's all in keeping with being innocent provokers."

So there's the ninja question covered. But would it be as effective if the band played ninja-themed country music? And can you really use rock instruments as weapons? Christo Bas Ninja reflects for a moment before saying, "Ninja missions are heavy, so the music should probably match and any interesting object can be used as a weapon, as long as it's blunt."

The scant evidence of Ninja's rock output (a four-song mini-album) displays that the group's time in their dojo/rehearsal room has been well spent. They're bringing far more to the battlefield in terms of smarts and skills than the average thrash act, and if the band's whole concept is a tad gimmicky, it's still firmly in keeping with the metal tradition, where it's OK for bands to pretend to be Satan worshipers or wizards.

And in a town seemingly overrun with pirate rock bands, surely ninjas deserve some consideration.

Biden Brings Home New Hybrid News, Jobs
Updated 6:15 AM EDT, Tue, Oct 27, 2009

Vice President Joe Biden is traveling to Delaware Tuesday to announce what's in store for the former General Motors assembly plant in Wilmington.

He's expected to confirm that Fisker Automotive, a California luxury automaker, will renovate the plant to produce plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

The plant would assemble as many as 100,000 hybrids a year and employ about 1,500 people, according to the New York Times.

Fisker recently received approval for $528.7 million in government loans to develop the "Project Ninja" plug-ins and a higher-end hybrid called the Karma. The Ninja would sell for about $40,000 after tax incentives and the Karma would go for around $80,000, according to the Washington Post.

"While some wanted to write off America's auto industry, we said no," Biden said in a statement to the Washington Post. "We knew that we needed to do something different -- we knew a new chapter had to be written."

The first Ninjas, which will be built in Finland, are expected to reach market in the summer of 2010. The next-generation plug-ins that would be assembled in Delaware would reach showrooms by 2012.

Delaware's GM plant produced the Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice roadsters, as well as an Opel version that was exported to Europe, before closing this summer.

'Ninja' guilty of weapons charges, put on probation (http://www.gloucestertimes.com/punews/local_story_299222116.html)
By Nick Curcuru

A Rockport man who police say frequently dressed as a ninja was sentenced to probation after pleading guilty to a pair of weapons charges.

Nicholas P. Dragonas, 25, of 34 South St., Rockport, was sentenced to one year probation by Judge Joseph Jennings in Gloucester District Court yesterday after pleading guilty to charges of possession of a firearm without an firearms identification card and possession of chemical Mace without an firearms identification card. He was also ordered to pay a $50 fine after pleading guilty to illegal possession of fireworks charges.

Dragonas had charges of marijuana possession with intent to distribute and carrying a dangerous weapon dismissed at the request of the commonwealth.

Dragonas was arrested in October 2008 after police executed a search warrant at his Smith Street home. Police applied for the search warrant based on information provided to them by an informant who had sought a restraining order against Dragonas on Sept. 30, 2008. In the search, police recovered a bevy of weapons, including 12 samurai swords and other knives, a slingshot wrist rocket with pellets, a blow gun with darts, nunchaku and a hunting bow. Dragonas was also found in possession of Chinese throwing stars. According to Rockport police, it was not illegal to have the weapons in his home but it is illegal to carry them in public.

At the time of his arrest, Dragonas had lived in Rockport for three years and had no criminal record. The only time police had dealt with him in the past was for a parking ticket.

Police also found several items used to grow and package marijuana including scales, heat lamps, and several small bags of the drug.

Ninja news is pretty weird. I'll be relieved when Halloween is over and I don't have to read so many ninja newsfeeds anymore.

That means that if submit a pic of yourself just wearing Ninja Headband (http://www.martialartsmart.com/75-51.html), you have a decent chance of getting into the finals. MAM usually ships orders the day they receive them. They're office in TN, so they're already closed for the day, but it would ship tomorrow first thing. UPS Ground is their standard shipping method, so that wouldn't guarantee delivery by next week. However, give them a call - they can do next day air shipments with a nominal surcharge: 1-800-824-2433.

I didn't see that on the martial art mart page

GeneChing

...but the rules don't say it all has to be TC gear. It just needs to be prominently displayed. Strictly speaking, it doesn't even have to be ninja gear (http://www.martialartsmart.com/ninja-styles.html), just Tiger Claw (http://www.tigerclaw.com/home.php).

Believe it or not, what you probably think is a Klingon batleh is Tiger Claw gear. It was a special order - an alleged Korean traditional weapon called a taekuk baer. I made preliminary moves towards researching this, mostly out of curiosity to see if there was a link to the Heaven & Earth Blade (http://www.martialartsmart.com/45-43.html), but instead wound up doing a piece just on that in our Sep Oct 2008 (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/magazine/article.php?article=780).

So we're up to 9 entries and there are 10 finalist spots. There's discussion of DQing several entries for not meeting the rule requirements (which is basically just 'show us your Tiger Claw (http://www.tigerclaw.com/home.php) gear). So at this point, if you send in a pic of yourself clad in ninja black rocking some TC gear - shoes (http://www.martialartsmart.com/shoes.html), headband (http://www.martialartsmart.com/headbands.html), whatever, you've got a pretty good shot at being a finalist and getting a NINJA PRIZE PACK.

UC Berkeley students make world-record California sushi roll (http://news.bostonherald.com/news/offbeat/view/20091108uc_berkeley_students_make_world-record_california_sushi_roll/srvc=home&position=recent)

BERKELEY, Calif. — It began with ninjas and it ended with tofu, and somewhere in the middle hundreds of amateur sushi rollers set a new world record.

The world’s longest California roll was made on the University of California, Berkeley campus Sunday, according to Consul-General of Japan Yasumasa Nagamine. Organizers lined up dozens of six-foot tables that were manned by volunteer students and campus employees and created 330 feet of California roll, complete with avocado, cucumber and faux-crab meat.

At the end of the roll, an additional 15 feet of vegetarian California roll substituted tofu for the meat.

The previous record of 300 feet was set in Hawaii in 2001, Berkeley spokeswoman Kathleen Maclay said.

The first table to begin rolling all the ingredients together was staffed by members of the Japanese Graduate & Researchers Society, who dressed in ninja costumes largely assembled from thrift stores.

"Ninja mask, a dollar-fifty. Plastic ninja sword, a dollar-fifty. Making the world’s longest California roll? Priceless," said Ph.D. graduate Eri Takahashi.

The roll was made from 200 pounds of dry rice, 80 pounds each of cucumber and avocado, and 180 pounds of fish, the latter donated by the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute.
