The System came from the Shaolin Temple in Fukien, in the 1600s. It was named for the training room, the Eng Chun Tim (Wing Chun Tong). Eng Chun is uniquely based on the 18 Luohan Open Hand System. Most Shaolin systems are based on the 18 Luohan Fist systems.

Lin Xiang Fuk Kenneth Salim was born in 1975 and began studying the Hek Ki Boen Fukien Black Flag Eng Chun around 1985 at the age of ten, in Indonesia. Suhu Lin is the current generation leader for the US and international training. Suhu Lin arrived in the US in 2004 and began teaching full time the following year. His Suhu Sukong (Grandmaster) Tio Tik Kwi, who was born in 1942 and began studying the System around 1961 at 19 years old, as a student of Sujo King Yang is retired now, and works with only a few select students.

The first generation to bring Eng Chun to Indonesia in 1907 was Lin’s Sujo, Kongco Cia Fun Jiao. Lin’s Sigung, who learned from Cia, was Sujo King Yang who was born in 1889 and started studying Eng Chun in 1909 at about 20 years old under Cia Fun Jiao. He passed away in 1986 at 97 yrs old.

Linked to Secret Societies

When the Shaolin Temple in Fukien was destroyed, many secret societies were born. Among the secret societies there were many different attitudes and goals: some were anti-Qing, some were anti-imperial government, some were anti-Qing and later during the Qing Dynasty same were anti-imperial government.

The Black Flag societies are the least known of the secret societies. They had two main goals: to terminate or execute corrupt Qing officials and to execute traitors to the rebellion within the secret societies.

The Black Flag society members were often members of other secret societies; this required that they keep their identity secret and guarded. Only the leader of any given Black Flag society knew the names and faces of his members.

Cia Fun Tjiao moved to Indonesia in 1907. He was the chief instructor of the Black Flag society during a chaotic situation, many traitors were in the secret societies and it was hard to know who was a friend and who was an enemy.

He fled to Indonesia, Mala city, because he heard his Sihing had opened a Martial Arts school. But there was no school -- they didn’t have phones back them so it was hard to verify hearsay.

The rumor was wrong and after arriving in Indonesia, he wandered homeless for a few weeks. A friend of Sigung heard that there was a Martial Arts Master living on the street. He heard that this Master had been attacked by several people with axes, and that this Master had taken them all down without getting scratched or hurting them. King Yang and his friend offered the Master a place to stay and food.

King Yang was smart and experienced with the older generation of Chinese. He took care of Cia Fun Tjiao, taking care of him and giving him opium – something reserved for rich Chinese at the time.

King Yang never asked to learn Martial Arts. He already knew some Martial Arts, and while taking care of Cia Fun Tjiao would practice and spar downstairs hoping the sound would carry upstairs and bother the teacher. Whenever an expert sees an amateur, it’s often very hard to keep from making corrections. It took two years for Cia Fun Tjiao to ask if they wanted to learn. Of course they did, but they had to take an oath, "blood from seven holes." The blood oath ceremony was followed until the 1970's.

Philosophy of Fukien Black Flag

The philosophy of the system is based on Chan or Mahayana Buddhism. When Sigung accepted students, he didn’t emphasize the spiritual basis of Buddhism. There are many religion in Indonesia and he didn’t want to tie the System to religion. However, he would explain the philosophy to Buddhist students to advise them and give them a better understanding of the System.

The Saam Chian Po is a fundamental concept of Fukien Shaolin Chan; it represents the three stages of life. Another key concept is the concept of time and space.

Fukien Wing Chun's Key Components

1. Micro Cosmos
The task of this stage is to free oneself from the attachment of oneself by separating the Mind, Body and Qi. The purpose is to know ourselves.

2. Macro cosmos
The task of this stage is to free oneself from the illusion of attachment, the Changes of Im where Yang expresses Heaven which is Time; and Yin expresses Earth, which is Space.

3. Bo Kek (Wu Chi)
The task of this stage is to free oneself from attachment of any forms/shape/theory.

Fukien Black Flag Wing Chun Key Concepts

Centerline Theory
Centerline exists in all directions

Circles
Circles exists in everything.

Natural Stances
Natural standing position with 50/50 weight distribution.

Stances were adapted from normal walking to conceal one’s training as a member of the Black Flag Secret Society group.

Natural stances take less effort to move to change directions (principle of conservation of energy.)

Natural stances provide a strong structure from side to side and not just forward, thus creating stability in all directions.

Footwork
Weight is distributed 50/50 across the entire sole of the feet. Placing the weight on only one leg is avoided. Footwork supports stability.

Strikes
We do not Block then Strike. However we also do not block/deflect and attack exactly simultaneously, as is common tothe Ip Man System.

Instead, our principle is to attack and deflect with one hand.
The second strike with the other hand is an added bonus.

Five Lines of the Body
Fukien Black Flag Wing Chun correlates the position of the elbows to the Five Lines of the Body. Elbows are angled in toward the body, which allows attacking as well as blocking. This also reduces confrontations of force against force.

Square Body Facing
Standing square to the opponent:
*removes the opponent's distance advantage;
*eliminates a weak side;
*ceates a greater probability of allowing one to attack using two sides (you can attack with both arms and both legs.

3-D Triangle structure of Im Yang Hand.

Tian, Di, Ren/Heaven, Earth, Man -- range application.
Application ranges include long, medium, and short range, described as Heaven, Earth, and Man. In this understanding, the fighting distance between the opponents' bodies is the same. It is the application which is different or indicative of the range.

From Fukien Black Flag perspective, the Heaven range is the most efficient. You must work harder in defending and attacking in the Earth and Man ranges. Think of it as defending your house. If someone is outside your yard it is easier to keep them out. More difficult if they are in your yard and even more difficult if they are actually in your house.

Heaven: "So be it. It happened.”

Huat Keng principle (Impluse Shock Power)
