Funny, she's a swordsman

Taiwan actress Cherrie Ying is set to challenge herself playing a "sassy girlfriend plus kungfu master" in Funny Swordsman (provisional title), which started filming on Monday.

The film, by Hong Kong director Cheung Siuhung, is set in a kind of club of the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907), where kungfu masters from across the nation gather and fight with those from Arab countries.

With her Julia Roberts-style big laugh, Ying will act opposite Xie Na, a well-known TV host. Ying says she is bracing herself to outdo Xie as the film's funniest woman.

Others in the film include He Jiong and Li Weijia, both popular TV hosts, and Taiwan comedian Yung Cheung.

Although the film's set is similar to My Own Swordsman (Wulin Waizhuan), a popular TV series based on an online novel, Cheung says the two works are completely different.

The film will premiere in February.
