My friend John has been showing me Sui Jee/sip? Kuen I think it's called while I show him some white crane footwork...so far I've been shown Sow, Gwa/shovel palm, palm hand hook around and grab and sow, gwa/tiger claw/ vert leopard fist, pull back gwa/shovel palm in twist stance/ shuffle to horse and uppercut swing fist while gaurding the crown...on Thursday I'm going to start learning the bow which is really long as far as intro's to forms go!. We're gonna work on CLF horse stance drills and lots of applications that I know from Kaido's Kajukenbo Hop Gar techniuques. He has three empty hand forms and a sword form forgot his staff set been doing it for three and a half years and trains BJJ with Marcus Saores, should be fun.

Looking for some cool info on Wong Ha and his world wide disciples.

Thanks,

James.

There are a few on this site that pop in from time to time. Sifu Hilbert Yiu was one of Wong Sifu's more well known students but there are a number sifus in the Vancouver area from Wong Ha. I think 2 of his female students carry his school name can't recall there names but one is a Wong Sifu.

Wong Ha disciples in Vancouver as CLF Nole mentioned, you have Sifu Hilbert Yiu and the two female students Hailey & Carmen (in Richmond). You also have;

Peter Wong - teaching in Chinatown out of the Hon Hsing Athletic Ass'n & the Chau Luen Society.

Paul Tam - took over the Richmond branch of Hilbert Yiu's school. Now known as CLF Canada / Gong Jan.

Tony Lee - North Burnaby

Gary Seto - North Burnaby

Mathew Wing @ the Strathcona Community Center near Chinatown.

Lam Dat - teaching at the Lum Society in Chinatown.

Hope this helps.

My friend trains with Gary Seto's guys, unfortnuantly due to work he only trains like once a moth now but when he learned it he was going full time...dude's ten years younger but has some good kung fu for only three and a half years...his jujitsu helps him bring the form to life...:) Does Satori Science still post here I wonder if he's teaching Buk Sing in Vancouver yet!?. My friend doesn't know much about CMA history as he's pretty young still into he legends and such, it was mentioned that Sifu Seto studied with Wong ha and anothe r CLF teacher on the mainland...anyone know if it was from the same branch/family of CLF?.

Vincent Chow's Bak Hok School is closed down, the location is now a Marco Suarez Bralizian Jujitsu school. Not sure where or if, Vincent Chow is still teaching.

As to other Lama/Hop Ga/Bak Hok schools there is;
Wilson Wu in Richmond (Hop Ga among other styles) http://www.kungfu-ocean.com/
There are some of Tony Jay's Lama people still active; Perry Lo & Vernon Shewchuk

Gary Seto studied with Wong Ha mostly but also in Singapore from Hung Sing Jeung Yim lineage Master.

Satori teaches here; http://www.dojang.ca/about/instructors/

You gotta love youtube...I'm pretty sure @ 32-40 second mark is the exact style-combo I was shown first. Now I'm working on horse stepping drills and chop chois in combination...it's cool how CLF has a lot of the crane biomechanics with one arm straight out and the rear coiled up behind. Fun:)

Doing this research on the fly I'm hoping to impress my friend by unearthing rare CLF video's online...I have all the free time in the world and my dude is pretty busy:cool:

Carrying this delightful tangent further:
In his later years, Bob Hope used to crash tv talk shows when he got bored. He just assumed everyone would be glad to see him.

It's kinda like that. Jim is an honored elder statesman of the arts and can put his comments in wherever he likes. I'll only complain when he stops dropping in.

That would be Wilkie Wu, most prominent Bak Mei teacher in town. There are two other Bak Mei persons; Alex Towe & Tony Towe but they are not actively teaching.

Bak Mei has two sister styles; Loong Ying & Yau Kung Mun which can be found in Vancouver. They are very similar to Bak Mei & have a few similar forms.

There is the sister style Loong Ying (sometimes referred to as Dragon Sign or Dragon Style) taught by Neil Chan & Ritchie Chow in Kerrisdale Community Center. Neil is affliated with Wilkie Wu as Neil also studied some Bak Mei.

There is a fellow named Patrick, can't remember last name that typically shows up to open tournaments & point spars that does Bak Mei as well.

You also have the Yau Kung Mun people another sister style to Bak Mei. Originally there were three brothers teaching it; Eugene, John & Danny. To the best of my knowledge only Danny is still active.

This clip showed Sifu Li Iu-Ling who was a Si-Hing of Wong Ha, they both studied with Chan Yiu-Chi. If you want to know how Chan Yiu-Chi would moved like, then look to his Grandson Chen Yong-Fa, this I was told by elders from Guangzhou who knew both of them.

Ironically enough I think the half of the moves that Grandmaster Li Iu Ling is demo-ing in the video is from Lohan Men System which he also studied.

Outside crescent kick, jumping snap, and lohan Tiger Strike pose (their school do it differently from mine).

Just an observation.

I can very well be wrong.

I have also learned Ng Lun Choy and seen other variations (as well a few CLF forms) but rarely (at least none that I recall) have outside crescent kick or jumping snap kick.

His pose is Lohan Tiger Stike pose since GM Li Iu Ling (and his students) have posed of a few photos with that pose in caption on their website. They very much look the same and like I have said it's not commonly found in CLF in that pose.

If you have a video online that highlight those moves in Ng Lun Choy I would love to see. Perhaps it was added in different lineages.

The other moves GM Li Iu Ling demonstrated can very much be CLF I don't doubt that.

Thanks for responding.

Thats exactly what i thought. he wasn't doing a form, but he was demonstrating what may be some of his favorite techniques. and this techniques are definitely not found in Ng Lung Choy

I was referring to the first moves, the crescent and lohan posture is for the picture ( I think)
The moves are larj jaap sau giuk darn na. The difference with ng lun choy is that the last move is done with a dart choy

So how was I wrong then?

I didn't say all the moves he did was from Lohan.

That combo he does can be seen in a variety of CLF sets but he is just doing it as a demo combo obviously. That series of moves is seen in a few different styles with slight variations of course.

That is okay.

I never disputed that he was doing CLF.

I just wanted to make an observation that he also included some techniques from lohan system. The lohan system from Sun Yu Feng is somewhat rare as the much of the forms have been lost over time.

You can read more about it on Grandmaster Li Iu Ling's website.

Very cool.

I practiced CLF when I was very young with Grandmaster Wong Ha. Too bad I wasn't into kung fu back then and didn't really dedicate myself.

I remember Grandmaster Wong Ha was super nice and when I was practicing my form he would sneak up from behind and wait for me to turn around to attack me(without contact).

I really miss him.
