Shamefully, I won't be able to return your kind TX hospitality (nachos at a breastaurent (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=54808)) because I'll be running around trying to get all the martial ducks in a row. But I will be able to tip you off to any afterparties or adjacent happenings. You should consider competing in the traditional divisions. We're hoping to improve our attendance in those this year. Hope to see you.

There's been a few updates to the site - mostly archived stuff from last year's event. Check it out.

Don't worry about, if I do make it up, I will be busy visiting high school and college friends. If the budget allows, I do want to compete. Will be nice to get the cobwebs out before Taiji Legacy.

If you are coming down for Taiji Legacy, let me know.

We're adding two new divisions this year: Tai Chi Push Hands & Ving Tsun Sticky Hands.

Tai Chi Push Hands is in cooperation with the Five Branches University (http://www.fivebranches.edu/) and the USA Tai Chi Culture Association (http://www.usataichikungfu.com/). Also involved are Tony Wong and Bruce Wolfe. We are importing a special competition rug from China (with a big glorious yin yang in the center!) There will be 6 divisions of restricted step Push Hands and Moving Push Hands. All competitors in this division will receive a Terracotta warrior replica just for entering.

Ving Tsun Sticky Hands will be overseen by Benny Meng of the Ving Tsun Museum (http://www.vtmuseum.org/).

More to come. Stay tuned!

Greg Lynch Jr. oversees our webcast for this event. He does a lot of freelance reporting, photography and video for us. Last year, we did a webcast the day of the event that was subject to a short delayed. This year we will be LIVE.

Greg whipped together this montage vid based on events he's covered just for fun. He originally used Everclear as the soundtrack, but deleted that for copyright reasons. It has excerpts from Martial Arts Benefit for Quake Victims (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=50969) (Tiger Claw Elite Championships (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=39267)), Songshan Shaolin Day activities (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=53389), Jackie Chan's U.S. Beloved Country debut (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/ezine/article.php?article=827) and last year's TCKFMC (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=53126).

The 2nd Tiger Claw’s KungFu Magazine Championship (http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-16087-St-Louis-Tai-Chi-Examiner~y2010m3d28-2nd-Tiger-Claws-KungFu-Magazine-Championship)
March 28, 9:00 PM St. Louis Tai Chi Examiner Violet Li

Kungfu Tai Chi Magazine is the authority on reporting Kungfu and Taichi. Kungfu Tai Chi Magazine is the largest English language magazine that focuses on the Chinese martial arts: both internal styles as well external styles. When it decided to host Tiger Claw’s KungFu Magazine Championship (TCKFMC) with Tiger Claw and Shark City Nationals, it holds the same level of integrity and professionalism. Right now, they are working diligently to import a special carpet just for the competition ring. This carpet will be used for the push-hands competition which is new for this year’s TCKFMC. They are also getting special Terracotta Warrior replica form Xian, China for the push-hands contestants.

Last year there were 500 contenders participated in the Tiger Claw’s KungFu Magazine Championship. This year, with additional competition categories and divisions, it is expected to attract even more participants. This competition is designed for everyone and embraces all types of martial arts practitioners, which includes Taichi, traditional Kungfu and contemporary Wushu. To encourage the love of martial arts, TCKFMC works with sponsors, including California Bank of Trust, 5 Branches University, Omei Kung Fu Academy, USA Taichi Culture Association, Shaolin Kungfu Intertional, and Selena Lu, to provide many fabulous awards. To uphold a high-level competition standard, there will be divisions for Grand Champions. Below are some features of this tournament:

Over 200 Traditional Kung Fu and Contemporary Wushu Divisions

24 Separate Chinese Martial Arts Grand Champion Divisions for Chinese Styles

Over $15,000 in cash and awards

Over 50 Grand Champion Divisions

6-foot trophies to all first place winners in all BASKA Divisions

1st through 8th places awards in all divisions

First timer divisions for inexperienced Sport Karate, Kung Fu and Wushu athletes – all first timer division competitors receive participation trophies

More than 350 kata, sparring, weapon and self defense divisions

5 OVERALL BLACK BELT GRAND CHAMPIONSHIPS

To celebrate the Year of Tiger, TCKFMC works with the non-profit organization WildAid Tiger to host a special division to benefit WildAid Tiger in the tournament. WildAid Tiger is part of the world-wide organization of WildAid whose missions are to save the lives of endangered animals and to end the illegal trade of these animals. Action movie super-star Jackie Chan is a primary spokesperson for WildAid Tiger along with Academy winner Harrison Ford, Oscar winning director Ang Lee, actress Bo Derek and other international celebrities.

This Tournament will be held in San Jose, California on June 12, 2010. It will conclude with a grand showcase with exhibitions by grandmasters. As of now, Master He Tao, Grandmaster Lily Lau, Grandmaster Helen Liang, Grandmaster Benny Meng, Grandmaster Al Novak, Shouyu Liang, and Tu Jin-Sheng, will join Shaolin Monk Shi Decheng and Jet Li Coach Wu Bin will appear at the tournament. Taichi practitioners may find it is extremely interesting that many Taichi masters practice extranal hard style martial arts as well. Actually, when a martial artist reach the highest level of kungfu, both internal and extranal work will come together.

Last year KungfuMagazine.com pioneered with a board effort and webcasted some of the highlights of the tournament. This year it will have webcast for live coverage as well. In case you cannot make it to the tournament , you can definitely catch some of the exciting movements on line.

We had a volunteer meeting last night at a special advanced screening of The Karate Kid (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1018006#post1018006). Unfortunately, it was not an exclusive screening, and such events are always overbooked, so many people got shut out. We did warn everyone to get there early, however, I was there at 5:50 and just got in myself (the screening was at 7). Nevertheless, some intrepid vols still made it in. Here's a pic (there's more on our Facebook & MySpace):

What's more, there was an article about our event in the World Journal. It takes a little web navigation to get there - navigation in Chinese. Go to http://74.208.100.139/wjepaperlogin/showpaperfull.aspx?20100601
On the right hand side, there's a nav bar. Click the 19th from the top that says 南灣. That should do it.

Tell that to someone who has not read your words here AND in print..... (another subscription plug?) ....

You are not that lucky in that you have generated all those words over all those years, even before you came on-board to this publication... you may be the only person qualified to do what you do...

And yeah, setting up and running a tournament and all of the other little details involved has gotta be a lotta work...

But, and this is a biggie, you're there doing for a living all day long what we like to do as much as we can - but can't because we have to do something else for a living. Where you're at right now sounds pretty good to us office bound worker bees....

I hear what you're saying, Skip J., and don't think I'm not grateful for the position I'm in. I still have a deep love of kung fu, of all martial arts, so my career is a lot better than flipping burgers. However, that part isn't luck. I've worked at this for over 20 years, and as anyone who makes a profession of the martial arts, well, it ain't easy. But still, you're totally right, Skip J., I should enjoy it. The company of the Liangs is always inspirational.

BTW, did you say subscription plug (http://www.martialartsmart.com/19341.html)? ;)

Back to business, there will be a special Shaolin monk demo at Tiger Claw’s KungFuMagazine.com Championship II (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/info/tournament/index.php) during a midday performance. That is scheduled to take place around 11:30.

We brought a troupe in last year for the first TCKFMC. I think all of them stayed in America. See some excerpts from those demos here:

demonstrations (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXWB-h8rr2c) (note that the 2nd monk up is Shi Yantuo, who I just started training under. You'll read more about him soon. ;))

We hoped to have the webcast up this morning, but it crashed. We're working on it.

A few more dignitaries are scheduled to arrive today. I'll try to post that before today is done.

Hope you all can make it out to our event. If not, hope you'll log on to the webcast over the weekend!

All I can say is Lame. I will never attend this tournament again. You advertise it as being a kung fu tournament, and then provide Karate sized rings. How do you expect someone to perform a northern Kwan Dao in a 20' ring? Or any other linear form for that matter. Then when students ask for permission to leave the ring they are told that they will have points deducted for it. Even the tai chi people were adjusting their footwork to stay in the ring.

I would have expected this at an open tournament, but this was advertised as specifically for kung fu, which means traditional should have a 20' x 30' ring minimum, its not like there wasn't enough space. And then to top it all off, when wushu needed more space, no one had a problem sliding a second ring over and joining the mats together. I guess traditional kung fu is just not good enough for you guys.

I'm also especially disappointed in Gene, because I asked him about this before the tournament started and he said, don't worry, we will take care of it.

GeneChing
06-14-2010, 09:22 AM
Sorry I don't remember your exact inquiry as I was dealing with a lot of people. I'm sure I told you that if your form went outside the ring, all you needed to do was tell the judges, and they would make compensations. If you made that request, I'm sorry that didn't happen. If you were denied that request, you should have come back to me as that was discussed in the judges meeting. We said specifically that judges would make allowances for anyone's form that was larger than the rings, especially for traditional.

My original proposal was to have the traditional rings unmatted, but that got overridden somewhere along the line. It was felt that an traditionalist could adjust to stepping on and off the mat. We'll make more adjustments next year.

Fei Yan

The request was made and denied. Two students were specifically told that they would be deducted points. I chose to simply not compete as there is no way to reduce my forms length by enough to stay in that ring. No big deal, just $100 down the drain and a wasted day for me. I would have much preferred no mats at all with just tape lines to indicate the ring.

GeneChing

You should have come back to me or the head arbitrator Bryant Fong. We had specifically stated at the judges meeting that there would be allowances for traditional forms to go beyond the ring size. Which ring was that on and which divisions were those?

Fei Yan
06-14-2010, 10:33 AM
That was traditional northern handforms, traditional northern short weapons, traditional northern long weapons. Ring 4, and also the one directly behind ring 4 as viewed from near the masters tent.

I also believe this was happening in other rings, but since my classmates were competing in those rings, those were the ones I focused on. I heard comments from a tai chi practioner about almost twisting her ankle on the edge of the mat and witnessed a number of the tai chi and shaolin people changing up their footwork to stay inside.

What upset me also, was that partway through the day, they joined rings 5 and 6 for wushu competition. I thought that they had figured out their blunder and were fixing it, but as soon as the wushu division ended they split the mats again, and there was plenty of open rings, so keeping those two joined would not have been a problem.

06-14-2010, 11:32 AM
Fei Yan, did you ask for arbitration? I really wish you had told me when this happened. I totally could have fixed this.

Fei Yan
06-14-2010, 11:54 AM
No, I didn't ask for arbitration. You were busy running around MCing all day, so I didn't bother you.

I just hope that it is a mistake that won't be repeated.

I'm going to leave it at that. At least I got to have my picture taken with Wu Bin. :D

...all the wushu people were constantly bothering me. Most of my job there that day was to fix problems like this.

We're still picking up the pieces here - a few more masters and champions are around. Alfred Hsing, who took 2nd in our WildAid Tiger Champion (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1019509), was just here.

All,

I’ve been promoting Wing Chun in Tournaments for the past 15 years, and worked diligently to standardize Chi Sau rules. Through the support and vision of many forward-thinking Tournament Promoters (people like Gene and Gigi, who went out of their way to put on a FANTASTIC event), Sifu, and Students many tournaments today feature Wing Chun divisions. The Tiger Claw Shark City Nationals in Jan Jose, California, has now joined the ranks of tournaments offering Wing Chun specific divisions.

In any given tournament, the average number of competitors for the Wing Chun Divisions hovers around 10-20 participants. Considering this statistic, this tournaments turn-out was typical – and the Sifu and Judges were very professional and well organized, with the competitors reporting to me that they were very happy to have participated and tested themselves safely. From this view, the Wing Chun Divisions were a rousing success. From another point of view – where the typical divisions for other martial art families started around 30 as a minimum and went higher from there. From this second perspective, I have to wonder what’s wrong with the Wing Chun community… are Wing Chun Guys (and Gals) just Complainers and Talkers with very few Doers?

A Sifu once said to me, "Tournaments aren’t real. It’s just a game because I can’t do Biu Ji to the eyes or chop the throat. A real fight should be finished in 5 seconds." This, to me, speaks to the quality of this Sifu’s understanding and experience – which, in essence, is very low – because he never competed so he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Instead, he’s trying to talk his way out of testing his knowledge, skill, and training methods. Of all the legends in the martial arts, I have never heard of anyone who became famous with no competitive experience at all. By the logic that testing skill can only be accomplished through the use of lethal technique, then the military and police shouldn’t use simulation and role-play to test performance under stress. Instead, everything should be performed with live ammunition, and full speed, and under real stress. However, under these conditions, expect casualties to be high.

Hat’s Off to all the Doers and Go-Getters – the Sifu and Competitors that came to support this event. Everyone that participated stated that they would be back with more participants for next year. I’m excited to see Wing Chun knowledge, skill, and healthy competition continue to grow. Thanks again to the promoters for their vision and the opportunity to showcase the unique skills of our beloved system!

Sincerely,
Master Meng

Last year (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=53126), I wore the same suit, only as a full-on 3-piece (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=55426). This year, I dropped the vest so the tie would show better. That's an official CHQA tie, packed with qi, so covering it with a vest detracted from its power.

Here are some push hands vids from TCKFMCII, forwarded to me by Tony Wong, who helped run our Push Hands division.
