In Chinese martial arts movies set in the pre 1900s, the males have the front half of their heads shaved and the back of the head has long hair in a pony tail.
Is this what is called "business up front and party in the back" or is there another reason for this custom?

Manchus were horsemen, so the hairdo was inspired by a horses tail and forced on the Han.

Are you talking about the queue? Well from what I remember this was originally a Manchurian hairstyle, and during the Qing dynasty the Han people were given this haircut as a sign of submission to the Qing rule. Anyone who didn't could be executed (except Buddhist and Daoist monks I would assume).

Ok, if it was originally Manchu, why the bald forehead? It seems like a high maintenance style.

Duhh, so their hair wouldnt get in their face while they were riding on horseback, all the while swinging their braid like a rope dart (cause all the cool ppl had hidden blades in their hair). :P P.S: I have no clue wth i'm talkin bout..

After reading this post, you may now shave your head in such a manner.

The front of the head is not shaved, but pulled out by the roots. Just a few hair at a time until it is clean. A pumice stone was used to clear off the smaller fuzz like hairs. This was done because most horse soldiers were archers and long hair would get into the bow string and hurt like hell. Galloping along on a horse has your hair bouncing all over the place. Pulling out the front half and braiding up the back into a pigtail would keep it behind you.
