What to expect from training Wing Chun at Jing Xin Yuan?

What can you expect in training Wing Chun at Jing Xin Yuan? Wing Chun, no more, no less. Jing Xin Yuan is home to Sifu Alan Goldberg and his disciples, one of which is Lin Ai Wei, head teacher and founder of Jing Xin Yuan’s Lay Buddhist Cultivation School. Sifu Lin’s student, Miguel Maya, is head of Jing Xin Yuan’s Clinic of Traditional Chinese Medicine. All three make up the foundational driving force of the Jing Xin Yuan establishment.

When we say you will get Wing Chun, we mean you will not receive a “mixed bag” of martial arts practices. You will indeed get Chinese Martial Arts without the stereotypical training mannerisms of aerobics, weight training and protective gear while training (only in certain instances).

Wing Chun training here at Jing Xin Yuan offers a full body workout, intense and made to accommodate each and every individual’s physical limitations. We say, “You can not conform to a fixed manner within Wing Chun, because there is no “fixed” manner; only a position that you must cultivate. Make Wing Chun conform to your limitations, and then move past your limitations to accommodate Wing Chun’s technicalities.”

Training consists of strength development exercises which are practiced with only Wing Chun methods and techniques. If you want a heavy workout, go to a gym. Here, you will exercise your body based on your ability to handle what is being taught. You will practice strengthening legs, abdomen, back, and arms/shoulders by simply applying yourself to Wing Chun structure.

Its not easy, but definitely worth it in the long run. Wing Chun is a striking system which reserves its Chin Na (Qin Na)/grappling strategy for close quarter applications and common sense practicality. This means you are not taught grappling of Wing Chun by technique in a one, two manner of execution, but by happen-stance. If you end up close enough to your opponent with the potential for a throw, or a lock, then you are shown the various ways to do so. It is not something done as a separate practice away from your current situation of application.

Wing Chun’s pole practice is done right from the beginning, but not the pole form and its applications. The pole, which is approximately nine and a half feet long, is quite heavy and is utilized for developing arm strength, punching power and torso/abdominal core strengthening.

Within 3 months of beginning, the student learns Chi Sao practice, but slowly to ensure precision and understanding of application. All throughout one’s training at Jing Xin Yuan’s Wing Chun Tang (center), the student learns how to apply their basic techniques in a common sense, practical manner utilizing applications against ordinary punching and kicking. Not everyone punches like a Wing Chun practitioner, and not everyone moves like one, therefore you will train against various punches and kicks, grabs and throws in order to maximize your understanding of how to make your techniques work in a simple and effective manner.

Simplicity in Wing Chun means investing in loss. Do not struggle, do not run away, do not give in to anxiety and throw out what ever you can to make something happen. The student’s training leads them to trust in their system, make true the theories of application and develop strategies against the various possibilities of attack from an opponent.

Most importantly, aside from combative training, the student learns about Culture and ethics and how to apply them in their own daily lives. At Jing Xin Yuan, we hold strictly to the Virtuous Code of a Martial Artists, teaching that the highest level of a Martial Artist is to return to nature, remain humane and compassionate to even your opponent.

Classes are taught by Sifu Alan Goldberg and his disciple Sifu Lin Ai Wei.
