The business part of muscle fibre consists of actin, which can be thought of as a rope, and myosin, which is a molecular motor which works rather like a tug-of-war team. Electrical stimulation sets the tug of war teams into action, frantically pulling their ropes and causing the muscle to contract. The actual force a muscle produces is the result of many myosin motors pulling and relaxing, although not necessarily in concert.

I guess you now "need" to understand Quantum Mechanics to explain kung fu. :D
There are probably a few internal guys thinking I told you so. :p

I'm pretty sure quantum theory explains everything!

Can it explain nothing?

Probably!:D

I'd say that the title was somewhat misleading. They are just using the same mathematical techniques as quantum mechanics to model the behaviour of the molecular motors. In fact they have to assume it is a quantum object.

OTOH, before they all go running off cheering Fritjof Kapra, please note the following:

What Si does not do is clearly explain the failings of the conventional models of muscle behaviour and why the quantum approach is better. Neither does Si make any predictions about the behaviour of muscle that classical models cannot account for.
the "problem" w/most so-called "internal" practitioners who luv to spew out how quantum mechanics "explains" what they do, is that the majority of them hav absolutely no idea what quantum mechanics is or how to explain what it describes in and of itself - they just throw it around as "proof" that Taoist "knew" all this stuff 100,000 years before so-called "western" science came up with it; so now, instead of studying what actually occurs physiologically in muscle, they will just start talking about how "qi" causes muscles to work in some alternate manner to reinforce their deluded belief that when you do internal "correctly", you are not contracting muscles...

thank you...

what you are seeing is an attempt to quantify what amounts to behavior of complex systems, which is very difficult if not impossible to do using "classical" mathematics / physics

it is the nature of things

there will be things explainable and there will be things unexplainable

with math

with physics

with science

---

the reasons being that

whenever, you set a rule or criteria

there will be things that fall within that rule, and there will be things that fall outside the rule

quatum physic

x physic

y physic

z physic

n physic

n+1 physic

and non physic

What you have failed to understand is that it is quantum theory that causes you to be so narrow-minded in your world view!

or it's why I've failed to make a "leap" of faith, perhaps?

I understand...those of us who are avid student's of Wudang Zen refer to this as the "Quantum Leap"!:D

That's because you spend too much time doing things that "appear" to be productive instead of doing truly productive activities.....such as watching television!
