A family in the south of China has hired a Shaolin monk to protect their six-year-old daughter on the way to school in the wake of a series of attacks on Chinese kindergartens.

Hu Qiong, a 38-year-old monk who began studying kung fu at the Shaolin temple aged eight, was hired by the Liu family to accompany their daughter to and from school each day, according to the Shanghai Daily newspaper.

After dropping the young girl off at seven o'clock in the morning, Hu will scour the school premises for any sign of danger. In return, he receives a salary of around £1,000 a month.

In the past month there have been nine attacks involving young children, including five at kindergartens or primary schools. On Wednesday, a man in Shaanxi province stabbed seven children to death and two adults at a village kindergarten, injuring 11 more.

The spate of violence has triggered panic among Chinese parents and the government has ordered tens of thousands of police to mount extra patrols at schools.

The monk won notoriety two years ago at the China Martial Arts Stunts competition by holding a fast spinning electric drill to his head and stomach without sustaining any injuries. He also caught a running electric saw with his bare hands, winning him the nickname "Iron Man".

Mr Liu, who owns two publishing houses in Foshan, a city in Guangdong province, said he had hired the monk to calm his mind after the murders. He explained to local reporters that he and his wife were too busy to see their daughter to school and pick her up.

BEIJING, May 13 -- A Father in south China has hired a Shaolin kung fu master as a bodyguard to protect his daughter, 6, on her way to and from school following a widespread string of fatal assaults on pupils.

The father, surnamed Liu, who owns two printing houses in Foshan City of Guangdong Province, said he hired monk Hu Qiong, 38, as he fretted over his only daughter after the spate of mindless and murderous attacks.

Liu said he and his wife were too busy to see their daughter to school and pick her up each day.

The job of Hu, a Shaolin monk since the age of 8, is to drive the girl to school at 7:10am daily.

He then waits at least three minutes at the entry gates to make sure she has gone into the classroom safe and sound while checking out school grounds for potential peril.

At 5pm, he arrives to pick the girl up and maintains a similar routine.

The job takes Hu only about an hour every day and brings him a salary of 10,000 yuan (US$1,464) a month, plus a monthly traffic allowance of 1,000 yuan.

Hu has been formally crowned as an "Iron Man" for his extraordinary martial-art feats.

He is myriad-skilled and has been known to break a large stone with his head.

Terrible to hear that some creep is going around stabbing kids and the parents have to resort to hiring a monk. Hopefully he's well trained in case something "goes down". I'd hate to read the next headline if this monk can't defend himself. Although the odds would be against you if you were up against some knife wielding maniac intent on causing harm no matter what training you've had.

At least seven children and two adults were stabbed to death in a village kindergarten on Wednesday morning in Nanzheng of Shaanxi province, the latest case in a series of school attacks across the country, local authorities said.

The 48-year-old local farmer behind the attack injured another 11 children in the frenzy, an official who did not want to be named told China Daily.

The attack came after local and central authorities boosted security forces and funds in the past weeks for places vulnerable to such attacks.

The farmer allegedly attacked almost everyone in the kindergarten, as only about 20 children were in the nursery when the rampage broke out at about 8 am, Xinhua News Agency reported.

The suspect, Wu Huanming, committed suicide after returning home from the scene, the emergency office of the Shaanxi provincial government said.

The privately run kindergarten is located in Linchang village of Shengshui township, in Nanzheng county of Hanzhong city, local officials and police confirmed.

All of the seven children who were killed - two girls and five boys - are under the age of five, local officials said.

Wu Hongying, the head of the kindergarten, died on the spot while her mother, who helped run the kindergarten, died in hospital on Wednesday afternoon.

A local resident said that the suspect rented his property to the kindergarten and said "everyone almost knows each other in the small village".

Police are still investigating the case and the alleged killer's motive.

Officials from the general office of the hospital refused to provide any information, including the number, ages and condition of those injured.

Li Xiaofei, a police officer from the neighboring Chengguan township police station of the county, said no cops are permanently stationed in Linchang village and the nearest one is 5 to 6 kilometers away.

In such an underdeveloped village, using extra funds to hire security guards to prevent any violent situation is "almost impossible", Li said.

Li said the city's public security bureau had issued directives in recent days asking for tightened security forces at and around schools.

"But we can only focus on the schools with the highest populations because the strength of the police force is just not enough," Li said.

"Take Chengguan township in central Nanzheng for example, we have only 11 criminal investigation policemen for a population of 110,000. But at least 20 schools are located there."

As of Wednesday, the death toll from five school attacks in five provinces in the past month had amounted to 17.

The Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of Education held an urgent meeting on Wednesday afternoon, urging for more tightened security measures on campus.

Schools and kindergartens in rural areas or city suburbs, or those run privately, should receive particular attention, a statement from the Ministry of Public Security said.

Warning of "copycat killings", psychologists said media reports on such violent cases should be handled properly.

"The violent attacks mostly result from a lack of counseling support for people who feel they are suffering from rising inequality and a widening wealth gap," said Xu Yan, dean of the psychology school of Beijing Normal University.

"Details about the attacks should be played down in media reports. Focus should be on causes for the attacks and the counter measures needed to address them instead," she said.

Yang Dongping, an expert on education at the Beijing Institute of Technology, said: "Media reports about these attacks have helped to create a copycat effect.

"People who are mentally unstable or who nurse hatred toward society then feel that this is a way of exacting revenge, or of making their demands."

Zhou Yongkang, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said on Wednesday that the country has made much progress since its reform and opening up in 1978, but social conflict has also emerged.

"China hopes to work with other countries to improve capabilities to ensure social equality, justice and to promote social harmony and stability," Zhou told a visiting Slovakian delegation.

BEIJING - At least five men armed with knives burst into the dormitory of a vocational college Wednesday and slashed nine students, one of them seriously, sparking new fears in a country on edge over a series of shocking rampages at schools.

Four students had been wounded in an earlier confrontation between the two groups, bringing the total injured to 13.

The pre-dawn attack took place in Haikou, the capital of the southern island province of Hainan, when five or six men burst into a dormitory at the Hainan Institute of Science and Technology and slashed the students, the China News Service reported.

It said eight were wounded slightly, while one's hand was cut off.

Two students remained hospitalized with wounds that were not life-threatening, the reports said.

Because it was a vocational college, the students would have been much older than the children targeted in a string of attacks at schools across China in the last two months.

The reports said the violence began with a confrontation late Tuesday between some of the college's students eating at a food stall outside the school and men from the surrounding villages. Such schools usually attract students in their late teens and early twenties.

Four of the students were attacked with knives and police were called, but left after questioning the students, the reports said. The villagers then called for reinforcements and attacked the school at about 2:30 a.m. (1830 GMT), the reports said.

A spokesman for the Hainan provincial government confirmed the report but said he had no additional information. The official Xinhua News Agency put the number of attackers at more than 10 and said they first assaulted a guard and disabled security cameras before rushing into two dormitories where lights remained on and hacking away apparently at random.

The attack follows five separate assaults by lone assailants against schoolchildren as young as three in the last two months that have left 17 dead and more than 50 wounded, including some adults.

The violence has resulted in a boost of security at schools across China, with nervous parents accompanying students to school and police and security guards posted at entrances.

While revenge was the apparent motive in the latest attack, previous rampages have involved apparently deranged people seeking to vent their rage on innocent victims with whom they had little or no connection.

Sociologists say those attacks reflect a failure to diagnose and treat mental illness, along with anger and frustration among people who feel victimized by China's high-stress, fast-changing society. Experts say the frequency of the attacks and choice of schoolchildren as the main victims suggest a copycat element.

In a similar incident, a cleaver-wielding man killed one woman and wounded five at a market in the southern province of Guangdong on Sunday before jumping to his death.

While the man appeared to have deliberately targeted women, it was not immediately clear what triggered the attack.

BEIJING (Reuters) - Parents in Beijing are taking no chances over the safety of their children after a series of attacks on schoolchildren frightened and angered China.

A growing number of parents have turned to self-defense classes for children more used to wielding electronic games than their fists.

Six times since March, angry and apparently deranged men have attacked Chinese schoolchildren with knives and, in one case, a hammer, killing 27 people and injuring more than 80. Officials have vowed to "strike hard" against the problem and schools have added security guards, but many parents think that's not enough.

Admissions to kung fu schools in Beijing have risen by at least 20 percent since April, China state media reported.

At the Changzhen Kongfu school near Beijing's university district, more than a dozen 7- to 12-year-old children were learning martial arts techniques meant to help them escape potential danger.

"There have been many changes recently. Before, only one to two students will come to consult, but since last week, we have received about 30 inquiries," said Zhang Xiaohang, the chief kung fu instructor at the school.

"A lot of parents register their children for the self-defense class as soon as they arrive, without hesitation. Parents are putting much more emphasis on children's safety."

Zhang now teaches about 10 classes per week and instructs more than 60 kids.

For pudgy 12-year-old Deng Zhiheng, the lessons serve two purposes.

"I am a little bit fat so I want to lose some weight," he said.

"Second of all, there have been many school attacks recently and I want to know how to prevent such attacks. So it is best if I learn these skills."

The class mainly focuses on teaching children how to respond to threats calmly and react quickly.

Self-defense techniques emphasize avoiding confrontation and escaping to safety, Zhang said.

Videos of kungfu master Hu Xiong showing his unique combination of body control and what he calls "new kungfu" skills have made the Sichuanese an international Internet celebrity. Hu comes from a long lineage of martial arts masters, including his grandfather and elder brother, and often demonstrates more traditional kungfu of the Shaolin style in public.

In this video filmed in a Guangyuan public park, the 32-year old performs some of the various tricks he's known for, including stopping a an electric drill with his abdomen, his throat, and his skull and bending solid steel bars by hitting them against his head. He also stops an electric grinding wheel with his hand and bursts a hot water bag by forcefully exhaling air into it through his nose.

Such practice is, of course, not without pain; Hu has shown the marks that these demonstrations have left on his body—swelling, burned-off skin, bleeding, but so far, none have stopped Hu from practicing kungfu and qigong.

In the next video, Master Hu bends a metal rod around his neck and then bends another spear-tipped rod by pushing the spear end against his throat. As if that weren't impressive enough, a disciple then places a brick against the back of Hu's neck and breaks it in half with a sledgehammer.

In this video, Hu demonstrates more traditional skills of Shaolin kungfu: Immediately having a massive wooden stick broken over his head, Hu goes into a headstand with his legs in a horizontal split. His assistant then uses a wooden stick to hit him with full force in the groin, breaking the second stick.

While it may look like a particularly gruesome DIY lobotomy, this Shaolin monk in Chinais showing how he has trained his body to withstand incredibly sharp objects.

In a series of stunts that should most certainly not be tried at home, Zhao Rui held a running electric drill to the side of his head without breaking the skin, bent an iron bar against a wall with his throat, and led on metal spears while breaking stones with his head.

According to People's Daily Online, Zhao held the powerful drill against his temple for 10 seconds - but only left a small red mark where it had been.

The display was intended to show how the 24-year-old had trained his body during his years of martial arts training - and his skills have made him a celebrity in his home city of Mianzhu in south-western China's Sichuan province.

But the 24-year-old admitted that he has previously accidentally drilled a hole in his head when practising the stunt, ripping off a large piece of skin.

He said: 'It was pretty painful but I got better and I learned from the experience and now I can practice pretty often without any problems.'

And to prove the point he held a drill against his head for 10 seconds.

Eyewitness Lian Tang, 25, said: 'It was incredible because after he removed it, there was no blood, only a bright red mark where the drill head had been.'

The kung fu master started learning martial arts as a child after becoming fascinated with the discipline and at the age of 16 ran away to join a Shaolin Temple.

He mainly wanted to learn Sanda (Chinese kick-boxing) and 'hard Qigong', which draws strength from the inner energy force known as qi.

He studied there for two years before leaving to continue his studies in kung fu from other masters - and now he is a master himself.

The drill is just one of the stunts he uses to demonstrate his skill, and he also can use his supertough skin to lie on sharpened spears without any of them piercing his body, or can bend an iron bar by pressing it between his throat and a wall.

He said: 'I believe in making my body super tough. Believe it or not I used to be quite nervous as a youngster but now that I can break stones with my head I have found it has given me lots of self-confidence.'

You got to follow the link for this embedded vid. You can't really see the head-drilling stunt well, but the pulling-the-car-with-a-blade-to-the-throat is amusing as I haven't seen this variation of such a stunt before. I like that blade in a cheesey sort of way. :)

A Shaolin Kung-Fu master uses AN electric drill on his skull, tries to pierce himself with iron spears, and cuts his throat with a steel blade, all in the stunning footage obtained by RT.

In the video, Zhao Rui performs a series of incredible stunts, intending to demonstrate how he had trained his body over the years of practicing martial arts.

The 24-year-old is known as a celebrity in his hometown Mianzhu, southwest China.

He began learning martial arts as a child, and ran away to join a Shaolin temple when he was 16. He studied for two years, before continuing his training with Kung-Fu masters.

Zhao Rui had previously drilled a hole in his head while ripping off a piece of his skin, he told The Daily Mail earlier this month.

“It was pretty painful but I got better and I learned from the experience and now I can practice pretty often without any problems,” he said.

“I believe in making my body super tough. Believe it or not, I used to be quite nervous as a youngster but now that I can break stones with my head I have found it has given me lots of self-confidence,” the Kung-Fu master added.
