Gene, I don't know if this question has been asked already or how many times it has been if it has but...
You mentioned in the article that you got footage of martial stuff... what happens to this footage? Ever sell or share any? Just curious.
Is it worthy of being packaged and sold? I'm guessing it is.

I've been working on putting together a documentary/demo vid on the First World Traditional Wushu Festival. Actually, I've been trying to work on it but it keeps getting pushed aside. My original plan was to have it out by the time I finished my most recent Shaolin Trips (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/magazine/article.php?article=576), but the last chapter just went up (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/ezine/article.php?article=593) and I'm not much closer than when I started. It WILL happen, especially since we've taken pre-orders already. I have hours upon hours of footage to showcase. It's the editing part that's time consuming.

I'm sure I've already downloaded every free video and kung fu clip there is to be found on the internet and I'd like to see something new :p

I'm pleased to announce the debut of my new book.
Shaolin Trips (http://www.martialartsmart.com/btc-gc01.html).
For starters, here's the promo blurb:

Gene Ching collects over a decade and a half worth of research on Shaolin Temple. Ching documents Shaolin’s convoluted journey from post-Cultural Revolution ruins to the global Buddhist juggernaut it has become today. Along the way, Ching recounts his personal trips to Shaolin, replete with cultural challenges, comic catastrophes and the occasional flash of enlightenment. With dozens of profiles of outstanding Shaolin monks and masters, Shaolin Trips reveals the stories behind the robes from the perspective of a Shaolin disciple and Kung Fu Tai Chi Magazine’s Associate Publisher. Fully indexed. 669 pages.

“Fascinating for the general reader, Shaolin Trips is a must for the martial artist.” Meir Shahar, Tel Aviv University, author of The Shaolin Monastery: History, Religion and the Chinese Martial Arts

And if you don't have my documentary, we're offering that with my book as a special discounted package.
Shaolin Trips: Book & DVD Pack (http://www.martialartsmart.com/dvdk-gc001.html)
Here's the promo blurb on for this:

Shaolin Trips: The First World Traditional Wushu Festival

Gene Ching presents the landmark spectacle of the largest martial arts event the world has ever seen, the First World Traditional Wushu Festival held in Mainland China – Chapter 13 of Gene’s new book. From the monstrous Opening Gala, to the record-breaking 45,000 performer procession to Shaolin Temple, to the thousands of international competitors, this is an unforgettable glimpse into the world of Chinese martial arts. Packed with traditional old masters, authentic Shaolin monks, exotic weapons, rare styles, international wushu champions and rare private footage, here is an extraordinary journey into the cradle of martial arts.

I'll have more info on this later, after I spam the world (well, the world wide web) trying to sell my work.

I'll bring a few, Skip J. My book is 669 pages, which makes it pretty heavy to carry on an airplane, especially if I bring several. Plus I don't really care to schlep them around the tournament as I'll already be toting the company camera, etc. So I'll check a small piece of luggage with a couple of books, but certainly not that many, and sell them on a first come, first serve basis, preferably all at the workshop.

I remember one time Su Xi and I tripped acid and did the tiger-crane two man form. We wound up two miles east in the forest, and when I woke up, Su Xi had hamstrung a golden leopard with his bare teeth.

Greetings,

The original cover of Gene's book had a giant mushroom on the cover. Those limited editions were presented to his inner circle of friends, along with a few buttons to lick.

And that makes it an important historical document. And it is truly a Magnum Opus....670 pages! Gene, you wrote the War and Peace of the Shaolin Temple.

All kidding aside, respect and congrats for getting that book together. I look forward to reading it. The modern history of Chinese martial arts is actually an area where little serious work has been done. And so I very much look forward to seeing your book.

take care,
Brian

Shoot, now I want to re-title my book, Brian.

Honestly, my intention was never to make it so long. My original intention was to compile my past research for my own benefit, so I wouldn't have to leaf through back issues (http://www.martialartsmart.com/kungfu-magazine.html) all the time. But that idea got away from me. :o There's actually a large portion that was in the original concept that I decided not to pursue, as I could already see it was getting longer than I had intended.

Thanks again for your support, everyone!

I already have enough for another book, but I need to sell the first one first.

Beyond the aforementioned omitted portion (which would have added another 18 chapters to the book) none of the material in the 2010 May/June Shaolin Special (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/magazine/article.php?article=892) (which is in the last 'official' week on the newsstand) made it into Shaolin Trips. In upcoming issue, I make a cursory mention of New Shaolin Temple (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=54940) in my publisher's note, but that's a story in development. I'm working on two more Shaolin pieces now for the next issue, one feature article and one short news piece (which may well explode into an ezine article).

But catch up with me first - buy Shaolin Trips book number one (http://www.martialartsmart.com/btc-gc01.html).

P.S. sha0lin1, you can promote here if it supports the forum and as this is a TC Media International publication it definitely helps pay the bills.

Our TN office handles MartialArtsMart.com fulfillment and they only received a small initial shipment via mail with the remainder following by truck, presumably today. So they are only out of stock for a very short time. They may be back in stock already.

I'm not sure I'm going to bring that many to TX next month as it weighs in at 669 pages and that gets heavy to carry pretty quickly. The book is basically a paper brick. So I might not have enough for everyone. I'm recommending that people who will see me in TX purchase their copy ahead of time and bring it to Legends of Kung Fu (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=56851). I'll bring my pen.

I’ve had a little bit of a problem getting my Shaolin Trips dvd to work. Specifically, when the menu screen comes-up, there is no cursor to select “play” with. I’ve managed to watch the dvd by hitting the “stop” button and then “play” at which point the dvd begins. Just an FYI.

That being said – the book itself has far exceeded expectations. Most books on Shaolin are simply a bunch of facts thrown on paper – and one is lucky to even have such facts in any form of consistent order. Additionally, must books are more about pictures than any type of scholarship. Gene, it seems, has taken the opposite approach (there are no pictures for starters), and thereby created something exceedingly unique. He’s managed to weave together not only a book on the history and facts pertaining to Shaolin – but also a very personal story. The book is surprisingly intimate – and because of this aspect – very hard to put down.

I’ve only read the first few chapters, and can tell that this book is one that I’m going to treasure for a very long time to come.

In other words…thanks Gene.

My apologies about that. That's the first I've heard of that problem. The DVD is basically video from Chapter 13, although I poached a little of the intro narrative in the DVD for the background of Shaolin in my book (http://www.martialartsmart.com/btc-gc01.html).

As for Rosie, I have this fond memory of Yanming getting her to eat a clove of raw garlic. And RZA, well, I couldn't leave him out now, could I?

Thanks for the endorsements, Krist & iron_leg_dave.

I almost busted when I read that. In part, because I have the same habit of eating raw garlic cloves (some old school American folk medicine) and have the more satisfying habit of urging others to partake in the same practice, and in other part because picturing the particular victim's reaction was hilarious.

People responding to sour li hing mui is just not the same as a clove of raw garlic.

Shaolin Trips (http://www.martialartsmart.com/btc-gc01.html) started as a compilation but it quickly got out of hand. It's 3 sections of 18 chapters each. The first section, Trips, compiles my personal experiences (some of which I've published in ), news events, history, and a lot of previously unpublished material. It puts this all in a semi-chronological order. Section 2 is monks and section 3 is masters, both of which are culled from past feature articles. For example, the chapter on Yongxin compiles my first cover story on him (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showpost.php?p=906389&postcount=11) from our 2003 November/December SHAOLIN SPECIAL (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/magazine/article.php?article=397) with all of the successive interviews (makes an interested read when compared back-to-back).

i_l_d: All I can say about the Rosie Yanming garlic incident is that she's awfully cute when she squeals in that outrageous accent of hers. ;)

I vaguely remember seeing that in a comic book store when I was a kid. The rabbit thing was not my idea. A buddy of mine wanted me to piece a picture together for something he was working on. When my other friend's book came out, I decided to use the rabbit picture in the advertisement.

There is a funny / sad story about the rabbit. That farmer was called up by the Korean government wanting to breed their own stock of monstrous rabbits. The farmer sent one of his big guys over to start the program off. When he later inquired how the breeding was going, they told him there had been a mix up and the rabbit had accidentally been eaten at a state dinner.

"Oops, we lied to you about our true motives, so here are some nice fur gloves as a consolation prize, sorry."

Your book shipped yesterday. The email said it should arrived today. They sure do ship quickly! I have to leave for my grandmother's house today, so hopefully it will arrive before I leave.

GeneChing
06-29-2010, 10:01 AM
...of course, there wouldn't have been any rabbit fur gloves either. Wouldn't you need to send two monstrous rabbits to start a breeding program?

I only know the basics of the story. Maybe they bred him with the native rabbits, I don't know.

No problem, buddy. I look forward to reading it. According to UPS, it left from the distribution center about 21 miles from my house this morning. I'm hoping it arrives soon.

Hey Gene, I've got a funny story for you. My book and DVD combo arrived about an hour after my last post (3 cheers for UPS). I stopped by the DMV on the way to my grandmother's house because my tags were about to expire. I brought the book in with me because I knew it was going to be a long wait. Sometime later, I could tell from my peripheral vision that an older lady off to my right was looking at the book cover. After seeing the picture of you and the monk (Shi Decheng?) holding staves, she leaned over and asked:

Excuse me, is that "The Last Airbender"?

I had to hold back my laughter. I told her:

No, mam it's not. But your grand-kids would love it just the same. You should buy it!

Isn't guerrilla marketing wonderful?!?!

Actually, there was that plate of scorpions. Oh, and the pig slaughtered outside the wushuguan. I retold those stories, right? So I recant. Some animals were harmed in the production of my book, but the ookairs were safe.

Gene do you ever watch Anthony Bourdain? He constantly has to watch animals get slaughtered on the show and it's hilarious how he reacts to it. Sometimes I guess the best meals come from recently deceased animals. lol.

GeneChing

I don't watch cooking shows. I had to google Anthony Bourdain to find out who he was.

But it does stand to reason that freshly slain meat is better. Back when I was carnivorous, that seemed to hold true. In China, there's not much refrigeration, so if it's not fresh, it's stale. I think I might have touched on that in my book too. Maybe not. I can't remember what got in the book and what was in old articles now. :o

So with our online sweepstakes (http://www.kungfumagazine.net/index.html), we always have a question. It's mostly to sort out the spambots, and somewhat to sort out the non-martial artists. I always try to compose the questions so the answers are fairly easy for martial arts aficionados. For my book promo, I asked "How would you have Gene Ching autograph Shaolin Trips?" The replies have been freaking hilarious. So many requests that involve nachos - I'm really honored. ;)

Ironically, even with such an easy question, we still got a few "Mother's maiden name" and "pet's name" replies. Stupid spambots!

So I had a "kensho" moment today that I had to share with someone and I thought this would be the best place to share it. (more or less someone that would "get it", don't want to "throw my pearls before swine").

Understanding "timing" in MA or boxing finally dawned on me, in terms of musical timing. As in waiting for the right moment for the punch to reveal itself.

I feel kind of dumb that it took me 10 years to finally figure this out but I'm pretty damm happy about it. Just thought I would share that.

Email me at Gene@KungFuMagazine.com and I'll let you know how. Actually, I used to do this through a particular Tiger Claw salesperson who left the company recently, so I have to set it up through a new rep, which might take a little bit to do. Hope you can wait for just a bit for this belated present to yourself. I'm honored that you would think of this as a Bday treat. :)

I'm taking the liberty of copying your comment above from your What hall in the Shaolin Temple.... (http://www.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?71390-What-hall-in-the-Shaolin-Temple) thread to my Shaolin Trips by Gene Ching (http://www.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?57311-Shaolin-Trips-by-Gene-Ching) thread, just to ttt that.

Its a great transmission though I have just started the journey. Being able to read this book at this point in my life means a lot, more than I can express here, so I'll try not to ramble. Just know I am thankful for your efforts in being a griot and preserver of the truth, spiritually, historically, culturally and artistically. You accomplish this without stepping on peoples minds or hearts or any of their personal pre-arranged (spiritual, cultural, historical, artistic) attachments. So everyone interested in kung fu, yet especially Shaolin GungFu can get into your book, and extract more than a wealth of experience from you, depending on their understanding.

Personally, reading the book, makes me feel like your distant disciple. Thats all I can say for now. I know you have your humility to keep in tact and you dont accept students or disciples in that way, then I would have to say you are my spirit animal lol at least. Your journey is one I've been in tune with and walking, just in another way. As far as going to Shaolin, I realized, most, if not all of the links I made to Shaolin in the past, hunting down schools, monks, books, robes, arms, shoes, socks, patches and pins, to the point, all were through your work. Meaning I learned the names of whos who, whats what, and wheres where, while I was just a kid dreaming of finding the 'real' Shaolin Quanfa. I got the run around, and spent a lot of time searching because I learned what to look for through WLE and KFTCM. The links you made went further than the magazines and catalogs.

The dvd is a another gem, that honestly, was just a gift man. lol you are too generous. Those masters you included (mind you I was aware of other performers, from the sound of the arms in the background, meaning you included the masters only, and didnt film the whole floor. Thanks for that as well as the volume increase for the foot slaps from the masters, pushing 80 ready to kick the noggin of a kungfu hater anyday!) .....back to the sentence lol, the Masters, specifically Baji Quan & BaguaZhang, were such a great blessing to watch. I'll just say that, to have that on dvd is such a jewel. the speed of "taking a step" I think its called (扣步 摆步) was so dope to see performed in that way, made me want to learn some Bagua right now. lol or at least that technique, to add to my SanShou arsenal.
I could keep rambling I have to stop myself, thats what I mean though, you offer so much, to a kung fu head, we can pick parts for eternity studying a page of yours, or a small segment of a film of yours. I have to give you your credit.
People try so hard to tear down Shaolin, or anything true for that matter, and try to replace it with microwave crap, I'm glad you preserve the essence and give a clear perspective of all sides. I have to say I agree with Shi De Cheng, that Shaolin is a Temple first, and a Ch'an Temple, THE Ch'an Temple in my eyes, so the goal will always be to spread Ch'an and the teaching of Buddha.
Though I have just gotten into the book, in general I always get Chanwuyi from you, even in esoteric and metaphysical forms, wether you do it on purpose or you do it naturally on purpose :p either way, I feel the medicine.

Amituofo

It's very gratifying to hear my book and dvd resonnated with you. I have yet to take on any disciples. I've been asked a few times, but it just doesn't feel right for me at this point in my life, but I'm very flattered by it.

I look forward to meeting you in the flesh someday, Djuan.

Gene,

Books don't need to be out of print to be marked up to a ridiculous degree. One (non-MA) author whose books I follow is David Paulides, who writes the Missing 411 series, and unscrupulous resellers buy his books and resell them on places like Amazon for often hundreds of dollars, where you can get them for about $25 apiece on his own website. He even asks if purchasers are going to buy in bulk to resell them at inflated prices, to please not buy. Though I doubt that would stop someone without ethics from doing it, anyway.
