View Full Version : Weightlifting playlist suggestions

Mr Punch

I'm a bit bored with my weightlifting playlist.

It consists of the Blade II, Matrix and Spawn soundtracks, a few Ministry tracks, a smattering of Einsturzende Neubauten, some hardcoreish techno every now and then (like Overseer's "Supermoves" from the Snatch soundtrack, and Fluke's "Atom Bomb" from the Wipeout 2097 soundtrack), and a couple of old school punk numbers (Ruts, Stiff Little Fingers, etc).

Anyone any suggestions? :)

Some people suggested Death From Above 1979, and NIN. I like NIN, but I can't find anything of theirs quite heavy enough to give me that weight-rage I'm looking for, and I couldn't possibly listen to anything by someone as ridiculously named as DFA1979! I'm also thinking of resurrecting my old fondness for KMFDM and Scraping Foetus Off The Wheel (tho, admittedly, SFOTW may fit into the silly names category).

Incidentally, apart from industrial/techno/hiphop crossover/punk, the only things that lift me higher are old school funk/soul: James Brown, Lee Dorsey etc... But that just won't do for the bench press...!

What's on your playlist?

Hi,

I love the propellerheads' version to "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" It is my exercise piece.

You would have to be a zombie not to get pumped to James Brown's "Superbad". If you are a bit jaded to this number, try this version. It is a slow funk that begs for a grind:

This one may be hard to get. It is "Killer Whale" by the Underground Resistance.

Mr Punch,

This one is for your concentration. If you can focus through this in one workout, you might achieve a personal best in the workout that follows:

mickey :)LOL, haven't actually seen that movie, but that funk is dope! Not quite the kind of workout I had in mind though!

Hi,

I love the propellerheads' version to "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" It is my exercise piece.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zN8GcRGNWe4Love that track, and that album, and have some stuff that's better suited to my playlist for me than that on an EP. 'Problem' with that is, it's a bit bright and breezy for my lifting! A lot of Propheads are excellent but too bouncy for my workout vibe.

You would have to be a zombie not to get pumped to James Brown's "Superbad". If you are a bit jaded to this number, try this version. It is a slow funk that begs for a grind:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-OkYUB3PhMCan't go wrong with James... but for a workout, that'd have to be a mid-rep, mid-weight vibe.

This one may be hard to get. It is "Killer Whale" by the Underground Resistance.

mickeyThat's so oldskool it's using a flint for chalk! Might work - will have to try it out.

Hate hiphop but... like Straight Outta Compton, Power, Mos Def and a few others... guess I quite like hiphop...! :D Think the industrial/hip-hop crossover stuff from the soundtracks I mentioned is way better though for max weights.

i have continual ringing in my ears since i was 9, so even when i do not have music on, there is still the eternal song of the cosmos in my head. :)

i enjoy listening to flogging molly, dropkick murphy's, rancid, and bad religion - fast and smash music. :DAll good calls, but for drinking or punk-stomps in fields/village/gigging... I can't train to those.

My play list consist of listening to breath, thoughts in my mind, noise of weights, and body. On the good days it consist of no sounds. The best. But in my gym they play the gayest of dance remixes and eurotrance oily aerobics ****... need something to drown that out, or I really get in a rage!

And I have to say, since I got into it with music, sometimes the beat does help you kick your own ass!

Hi Mr Punch,

You might want to take a look at some '70's disco like Donna Summer. Much of it has a clear beat that makes it like listening to a chromatic metronome.

How about the theme to Scarface it's beginning is more that enough to get someone into the zone. Check it out:

ACDC can be good, but not that big a metaller... tho it did remind me to look out some Motorhead, who for some reason always got me going more than other metal, thanks! I tried that Eminem: 'nice' but no way I could train to it.

i like that AC/DC for the bagpipes and the increasing tempo through the song.

i frakking HATE 'm&m' ...just kinda think he's a punk who needs to get a real job and stop whining. but, those two songs work for me.

Ska does it for me the most...keep in mind that ska is largely upbeat tempo w/ depressing lyrics...the juxtaposition is part of why I like it so much.

but, i also listen to a lot of funk/hip hop and anything that mixes that with other genres works for me. i don't need the strict tempo/bpm of a song to drive me, most often a slower/bottom end groove makes me try to get more reps in between the beat...my mind focuses on the slower groove/funk beat while the body kicks some ass.

so, lots of Tribe, J5, De La Soul, Gorillaz. Funny, I've burned a couple of CD's for the CF gym and they have tended to flop...no one likes to train funky. :(

I used to listen to a lot more electronic: K&D, Chemical Bros., etc. but it all got a bit redundant. I def have to have an influx of new music on a regular basis, esp. stuff that crosses/mixes genres...gives me a look at the bigger picture.

so, to paraphrase Zimmern: 'If is sounds good, listen to it'.

So discovered Marilyn Manson and Rob/White Zombie big time, and mostly just use them, but ...

Rammstein's Du Hast from The Matrix still does it,
Supermoves from Overseer,
Under Control from Freeland,
some One Inch Punch,
the Spawn, Matrix, Blade and Blade 2 soundtracks,
Back Drop Bomb (Japanese alt metal, vaguely reminiscent of No Means No),
specifically the Fixed EP from NIN, plus some from Downward Spiral,
Power from Ice T,
The Roots (marv - new discovery for me),
Extreme Ways (various mixes of the song from the Bourne soundtrack), plus Lift Me Up, Raining Again, Beautiful, and strangely down tempo and soft, Where You End,
oh, and masses of Ministry.

But basically, Manson, Zombie and Ministry.

Happy New Year, anyone who's still here!

dude ... soulfly is in my top 5 for maxing.

also cavalera conspiracy, naplam death, hatebreed, or slayer. or any intense classical if i feel that a sharp focus will serve me better than pure emotion - usually beethoven. i realize thats technically six, so i'll lump cavalera consipracy and soulfly together.

few of my most overused max / work set songs:

cavalera conspiracy (inflikted): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RF1vGXiZOoo

naplam death: (when all is said and done) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIRUzqHTNh8
(breed to breath) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKW5SkGm0qw&playnext=1&list=PL3518E2B61EA80010&index=6

slayer (skeleton christ): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SaS4XGowbqc

hatebreed - usually destroy everything or this is now ... but it really doesnt matter as all their songs sound fairly similar. i really like when they come up in my play list, but not sure i could listen to an entire album.

also sometimes deicide ... but its usually only when they just happen to come up in my playlist as im getting ready to go for it.

.... for lifting in general any 80s/90s thrash and death metal (testement, kreator, exodus, anthrax (pre john bush), atrophy, dri, carcass, obituary, nocturnus), some punk (anti-nowhere league, black flag, misfits), a little bit of funky stuff (suicidal and infectious grooves), classical music, and *cough* icp *cough*.
