Hand cut off in gang fight
By KELVIN HEALEY and SHANNON McRAE
February 29, 2004

A MAN's hand was hacked off at the wrist during a gang clash in Fitzroy Gardens last night.

A team of microsurgeons was working overnight to re-attach the hand, believed to have been severed by a Samurai-style sword.

Police said up to 40 youths had been involved in a "running battle" through the park when the attack occurred.

Witnesses said it had been a clash between two Asian gangs. But by the time police arrived, the youths had fled.

The man, 21, missing his left hand and bleeding heavily, staggered into St Vincent's Hospital shortly after 7pm. It was 30 minutes before police arrived with his hand, which they found after scouring the gardens.

A large sword discovered in a bush was believed to have been used in the attack. Several knives also were found.

The park was sealed off for several hours last night as police searched for evidence.

Sergeant Greg Baker, of the Melbourne criminal investigation unit, said it was not known what had sparked the violence or whether anybody else was hurt.

"There was a bit of a running battle through the park," he said.

The victim made his own way at least 500m to the hospital.

St Vincent's spokesman Mike Griffen said two teams of microsurgeons and nurses had been called in to re-attach the hand. Surgery was expected to continue through the night.

Mr Griffen said one team was working on the hand, another on the wrist. Surgeons were tagging major arteries and nerves before re-attaching the hand.

The team was hopeful of success.

"The patient and the hand arrived within a reasonably short time following the incident, which significantly improved the outlook for the operation," Mr Griffen said.

Albert St was blocked to westbound traffic between Clarendon and Landsdowne streets for several hours.

A Metropolitan Ambulance spokeswoman said an ambulance had been called, but was cancelled when police arrived and could not find anyone injured.

In similar circumstances on Friday night, an ambulance was called to the corner of nearby Victoria St after a report of a machete attack, but no one was at the scene when they arrived.

There were like 40 members of an asian gang arrested here for various things in a sting a few years ago.

2 days ago in scarborough (again) there was a gang fight involving machetes, pipes and bats involving more than 30 people.

It is actually quite a common occurance here. THe one from a couple of days ago happened just outside a community centre.

This video is just the best. A small gang attack a group, and go for the smallest and weakest member. The others rung away and come back with a whole tribe of … erm .. lets just say .. gang members.

Check it out, this is probably the funniest and coolest video I have seen in a while. Work safe.

well, that may have been emotionally satisfying for some of you, it clearly shows what inability there is to properly ref and control a fight at that venue.

I wonder if someone was being a jerk before that which was why the guy was being that way towards his opponent?

That was a lot of nonsense and completely unsportsmanlike all round in my opinion.

yeah the guy was a jerk, but ref shoulda DQ'd him and let that be that.
letting other guys in and letting them do that and even the ref participating?

Yeah, that's a crap venue run in a crappy way.

Massive school brawl breaks out in southwest China with over 100 students involved

Chinese State Media are not reporting much on this as per their usual style. but I did manage to find out that it was the architecture students versus military cadets. Did Geodesic Domes not shine warmly in the hearts of the people? :p

The brawl at the Kirin Vocational and Technical School in the city of Qujing, Yunnan Province began following an argument between two students after the noon recess, reported Chinese media Guangyuanol.

Their quarrel escalated quickly into a 100-strong fight between military students, dressed in army fatigues and armed with baton-like weapons, and a mix of students studying architecture.

So that's all there is and probably ever will be, the devil's in the details but the devil is just failing to report in these days.
-
However.. I found another article that may cast some light though it seems to be between students and instructors but it might have the same root causes.

Bloody Brawl Breaks Out During Military Training — at a Chinese High School (http://foreignpolicy.com/2014/08/27/bloody-brawl-breaks-out-during-military-training-at-a-chinese-high-school/)

August 27, 2014
Chinese social media can't agree whether to blame an out-of-control military or spoiled youth.

A recent ugly brawl between paramilitary drill instructors and high schoolers in central China has exposed a fault line between China’s military and its people. The bloody Aug. 24 incident, which landed 40 freshmen in the hospital with bone fractures and gashes, is being parsed on China’s active social web as either evidence of the wholesale corruption of the Chinese military, or the hopeless degeneration of China’s youth.

The conflict occurred during a week of military training at Huangcang High School in Hunan’s Longshan, a county of half a million people known for its karst caves. (The bulk of Chinese military recruits are rural youth and the unemployed, not students, but military training sessions are routine at high schools and colleges across China.)
...

... sentiment toward the incident was decidedly pro-military, reflecting a widely held belief that modern Chinese youth are spoiled and egotistical. Chinese commonly blame those perceived traits on the country’s strict family planning policy, which for more than three decades has limited most families to just one child.
...
The Chinese military’s image has been tarnished in recent months by public announcements of graft charges against high-ranking officers Gen. Xu Caihou and Lt. Gen. Gu Junshan in June and April, respectively. One commentator wrote that the influence of officers like Gu and Xu had created a lack of discipline and pockets of moral decay in the military.

So the story which is not so absurd any more. Class warfare? This reflects mass social changes. I wonder if the trend will lead anywhere.

Look at some other headlines:

Guests at rival Chinese weddings in four-hour street battle with knives and flaming fireworks

Police called after dozens of people fight after grooms taking part in separate processions meet in the street and refuse to let each other pass

Two secondary school pupils in western China were involved in a knife fight in the street with two older students, according to a news website report.

The brawl ended with the older pair needing treatment in hospital,

Rival firms battle it out with bulldozers on street in northern China

At least six diggers from two companies involved in cutthroat competition for clients took part in clashes, according to mainland media reports

In China often Chinese do things in groups It was humorous, at the Mountain hostels in HK when the Chinese Groups came for a weekend, guys or girls, they would usually go to the washrooms in groups.
