Cool Video article of this piece written by the late Wong Shun Leung, great pictures too.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BBT3XD1QJY .

Some fine advice IMO, some points of interest:

1) chi sau skill is for when your attack meets an obstruction, we don't stick to the hand otherwise you will chase hands (go somewhere other than towards your opponents center).
2) you will more than likely be hit while you are fighting, to tell your students they won't or other such notions of invincible skill is shameful.
3) be patient in a fight and hit when your opponent doesn't expect it, when they are hitting you (requires good timing) and within one step range, therefore setting up a good follow up for yourself.

enjoy,

I wonder what Terence's answer to that is as it totally contradicts his "attached" WCK......:D

WSL also wrote in an article that 'sensitivity' is a by-product of the drills, not the goal.
simple ...what to do if my attack is stopped....without thinking.
Intuitive reactions.

Actually what WSL wrote is entirely consistent with WCK being attached fighting.

The problem is that you are thinking that this means ONLY attached to his hands (ala chi sao) or that I am talking about chasing his hands. Chi sao is an exercise to teach you controlling while striking but is not application.

As I have said, we chase CONTROL.

If you fight on the inside and don't have control over an opponent, all kinds of bad things will happen.

Maybe what you should do is what WSL did -- go out and see for yourself.

Wong was great. When I did Chi Sao with him, he demonstrated finesse and control over my center of gravity and basically had me off balance and struck me at will. He had a charisma and was a great man skilled in calligraphy and Chinese medicine.

I think all of these arguments are silly and a lot of people making assumptions of each other.

Of course they are silly but very entertaining at the same time. ;)

The arguments are of course silly, their ego based and has nothing to do with reality. People are assuming so much here, like they know another's skills by what they write. Even video does not convey the totality of one's skill, I learned that lesson. The only way to know is to personally experience one another's level of skill and experience, otherwise it is like kids in the playground yelling my Dad is bigger than yours.

I think WSL can be looked upon as someone that took the BS out of the art, he streamlined everything based on his experience. Believe it or not that streamlining is still happening today, as someone of his students and grandstudents are still performing R&D regarding WSLVT and trying to make it better, which is why none of WSL students are exactly alike, they differ, but maintain the same main core, which is what I see when I see them on vid, if you you don't have the eye for it you will miss it.

People are hanging onto the words other posters use instead of what is actually meant... These folks are not even attempting to *get* what is being said..

This is often the case with Terence's posts..

It has become clear to me that Terence is advocating plain vanilla Wing Chun..albeit actually used in fighting instead of applying it in theory at the tea house...

And when I say that I mean interpretations of the art that are consistent with, say..... Wong Sheung Leung.....and Wan Kam Leung... These are two well respected and accepted teachers of the art especially in the Yip family...

Some folks need to get passed the words used to explain things...and open their minds instead of posting barely intelligible jibber that makes no real points and proves little more than the poster's lack of writing skill and limited grasp of logical thought ..

You guys do realize that what WSL wrote is "what I ( BIG I) learned from beimo".
Not what YOU should do or what YOUR WC should be.
WSL's WC is HIS base don his experiences and his skill and the POINT is that OUR WC should be base don the same thing, OUR experiences and OUR skills.

Hi Paul,

I sort of look at the article as additions to the kuit, his experience are his of course, but one can learn from his experience to make their own more effective. There just sayings that bring to mind some good ideas to concern one's self with when training and such. When fighting for real, there is no concern or thinking, just doing, with the hope that you've put enough practice time in for your tools to work effectively.

I can't directly learn (physically) from what anyone writes or says, but in a indirect way what they say can effect how I train and how I understand it. IMO if you don't understand what you are doing, your training becomes that much less effective, which effects your effectiveness output.

Some of what is said are simply generic "teachings" of Chun...

Everyone's getting busy labeling what is and what is not for public Chun consumption..

And yes you can learn MA related things here on the forum, and the web or at least I know I can because I have.. :p
