I was thinking about this the other day and it got me thinking, for those instructors of Kung Fu who hang chinese flags in their schools/ kwoons, which flag do you fly?

I have seen some Kung Fu schools fly the Republic of China flag:

http://media.strategywiki.org/images/thumb/7/72/Flag_of_the_Republic_of_China.svg/800px-Flag_of_the_Republic_of_China.svg.png

Some fly the Qing Dynasty flag:

Just curious. I guess this question is more for US instructors, as obviously those in China will fly the Chinese flag.

Yes, I believe the american flag should be flown or hung above any other flag if you are a US citizen living in the US, I was asking about Chinese flags and what is flown if people display them in their Kung Fu school. Just like you see the Japanese flag with the US flag in Karate and Judo schools and the Brazilian flag in BJJ schools.

HSK,

My guess would be what SPJ said, if a style was created during the Qing dynasty that is why someone would fly it. Also, many in the US I believe are reluctant to fly a PRC flag due to the communist government. I am just curious of what flags are flown and why.

PRC flags are typically used for TONGS. And, yeah, my system was created during the Qing Dynasty, the very one my elders were trying to overthrow. And, next year is the 100 years celebration of the ending of the Qing Dynasty.

but the only flags we fly in our school are the ones that have to deal specifically with our lineage of CLF or the Hung Mun lodge we belong to.

The Qing dynasty was a particularly fertile time for CMA, especially southern styles.

I fly no flags.

If there was to be a flag in my training space, it would be a Canadian flag only.
Because that's where I am.

Yes, fertile enough that 99% of southern chinese wanted to overthrow it at all costs. I know they wouldn't be flying flags of a dynasty they TOTALLY hated.

well, anti qing and restoration of ming or fan qing fu ming

the movement started --

qing army slaughtered all the people that were resisting civilans included at--

shi ke fa was the governer, he renouced surrender.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shi_Kefa

and of course the famous general zheng cheng gong. his father surrendered and was killed by qing,

zheng went on to lead the movement and took taiwan back from the dutch.

U.S. (http://www.martialartsmart.com/95-01l.html), Korean (http://www.martialartsmart.com/95-02l.html) & Japanese (http://www.martialartsmart.com/95-04l.html). Within the martial arts, those tend to be the most nationalistic. I've never seen a Taiwanese, PRC or Tibetan flag in a school around here. That doesn't mean they don't have them, just that I've never seen that. We carry more flag patches (http://www.martialartsmart.com/flag-patches.html), because those are a little more popular for uniforms, especially in the karate circles. But, except for an odd spike we had during 9/11, most don't come to us to buy flags.

Hi hskwarrior,

I see you caught my post before I edited it.

If someone needs to bring that flag to their school, they will soon end up on the busted martial arts thread.

I do think it unfortunate to define a person by who they do behind closed doors. If I was that way, I would not have it. Not for one moment.

True. True. I have not problem with it. But i do have problems with MEN ....GAY MEN.....acting like FEMALES. BE A MAN....sure take it in your Culo...BUT BE A MAN ABOUT IT. Don't wear thongs, bra's or start wearing man purses.

And, if you're a man, don't show up to martial arts class wearing a dress. :o not cool hahahaha

None of the "Tibetan" ie Pak Hok, Hop Ga or Lama people would be caught dead with a tibetan flag, Chinese are so nationalistic, I'm just a weirdo

This was kind of my point. In Karate schools, you see an american and japanese flag, in Taekwondo you see an american and korean flag, but seldom do you see a Kung Fu school with an american and chinese flag. Just saying.

Politics, literally

In the 80's I saw almost always Taiwan / KMT / Nationalist flags in NY. Then you got a lot of mainlanders coming in and we started seeing the PRC flag. Now HK is part of mainland, etc etc

In NYC in the 80's the Cantonese were all people who left China because they didn't want to be under the communists, and some Taiwanese, so no PRC flag

The Fukienese came in the late 80's ealy 90's and flew the PRC flag. Not only was it politics, it was regional rivalry, no one liked the Fukienese back then

Today, the KMT thing is really eclipsed, yet still, how many people in the US want to fly a PRC (communist) flag?

hskwarrior,

The h@m@sexual lifestyle is on the rise all over the world. It is being pushed as a means of population control. If anything, there is a shortage of heterosexual men. If you have ever gone to a college campus you will observe this. There are women of all hues looking for a man to give them some serious release. You could have a two inch joint, firm. If you are hetero, you will have the biggest d!ck on campus.

I'm not too big on flags in schools. I prefer my patriotism to be subtle.

At the gym I train at there is no PRC national flag, just a huge painting covering the east wall. It looks old and dirty, just like the rest of the gym.

I would be surprised to see a PRC flag being hung at a school in the U.S., as a display of a big U.S. flag in China would be sure to draw criticism here.

At the schools I attended no national flag was ever displayed, just numerous school banners. In SF Chinatown we would do lion dance for double-ten day and the KMT would pass out flags to everyone. Some of the students seemed to resent the KMT and wouldn't even touch the flags. I have a U.S. and a Tibetan flag at home but don't display them in my school.

We're a country founded on rebellion; you can't tell us not to do something. Nice video.
