This really isn't that intriguing. I just thought it was funny.

FCTC student uses class to stay competitive in the ring

Kevin Taylor trains five days a week, three hours each session, to compete in mixed martial arts.

Since November, Taylor now implements another treatment to remain competitive in the ring -- massage therapy.

Taylor enrolled in First Coast Technical College's massage therapy program to learn skills first-hand.

"I know my body now better than ever," said the St Augustine native.

Evidence suggests massage therapy dates back 3,000 years and concentrated on an athlete's specific needs.

"A therapist uses stroking and kneading techniques to manipulate muscles. Massage also benefits in breaking down body toxins to aid flexibility," Taylor said. "It's an effective therapy for releasing muscle tension and imbalances in soft tissue, which is beneficial for recovering muscles."

Taylor has competed in six MMA bouts over the last eight months, culminating in five wins and one split decision.

"Soon I will be licensed with a real career plan," he said. "I'm familiar with what benefits an athlete and there's a need for my skill set."

FCTC's massage therapy program takes approximately seven months to complete and students learn skills needed to take the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination.

"Kevin demonstrates tremendous potential to excel in this field and beyond," said Tim Davidson, FCTC massage instructor.

Applications are being accepted for classes that will begin March 16. Financial aid is available for those who qualify.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I think Shaolin Massage (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=57834) would choke out MMA massage. :p

Seven months is pretty fast to become a certified massage therapist.
