Has anyone here ever seen one?

And I'm talking about urban raccoons. I'd never heard of them until last year when we went to California. We visited friends in Riverside and they told us about them because out there they are apparently common. They said they get huge, and will actually enter people's houses through open windows to get food. They said you don't just have to worry about your cats, they get so big they can put a hurt on dogs too. So the other day we were driving at night and my wife said 'Watch out for that dog' that was crossing the street. As a got closer I saw there were actually 2 of them and they were not dogs but city coons! And this was in a pretty busy part of the city. I was shocked at how big they were, I'd never seen one myself. I was just wondering if any of you had them where you live, as I read that they don't inhabit every city. And I'm not talking about rural areas, I'm talking about the urban areas of cities.

Fremont is in the armpit of the bay. It's mostly suburban tracts with a lot of industrial areas, surrounded by bay and foothills. There's a slough too, and lots of drainage ditches.

We had to raccoons get into our house through the pet doors. One got trapped behind our sofa. I chased it out with a bokken (http://www.martialartsmart.com/40-03.html). It crapped and peed all over the Pergo, which was a nasty stink. Fortunately Pergo is easy to clean. I've lived there 10 years now and that was the only time they've come in. We have more problems with skunks actually.

When I lived in S.F., I had only one raccoon encounter in my yard. That's when I was living on the border of S.F., not downtown or anything. It was off the Mission, close to the foothills of Mt. San Bruno.

Raccoons are tenacious. Why isn't there a raccoon style? Oh that's right. They're a North American creature...

I was hangin on my back poorch talking with this chick one night and all of a sudden this racoon comes crawling and a creeping toward us along the top of the wooden fence. I was like wtf...so i made some noises at it and it didnt even flinch, i smacked the fence and nothing, it just creepy creeped closer. not wanting to risk an angry animal and rabies we went inside. it acted like it was being territorial. as i dont ever hang on my back poorch it may have been its normal night hang out spot.

i figured that had to be it so i fed it some bloody red meat and now i call him hulk.

thats normal here... theyre really cute eating raw eggs... the break the shell with those lil hands and drink up... every kid in b.c. grew up around racoons, urban or otherwise... we'd feed em by hand and have em sit with us... and dont get me wrong... they were still wild animals, we didnt pet them and pick them up or anything... they would just chill within 2 or 3 feet... scroungers...

I see them dead on the road in austin from time to time.
I've also seen them in San Antonio running around.
I've also seen urban deer.

When my dad was in rehab after his stroke, the nurses would let in a coon and handfeed it crackers every night. He was about as large as a medium-sized dog.

I've always lived rural or in the suburbs and I've seen them around alot. I'd just never seen them in 'the city'. The 2 I saw that night were crossing a 5-lane street in the middle of South Austin. The ones in the city were huge compared to the ones I've seen outside of it.

We could learn a lot about urban survival. I think it's up to the North American kung fu people to develop an original raccoon style.

I didn't come up with the term, our friends in Riverside called them that. The first time he used the term I actually asked 'What the hell is a city coon'? He was actually surprised neither me or my wife had never heard the term.

DJ, the word is what you make of it. Everyone else is talking about the animals.

They have raccoons in Fort Polk. Clever little *******s will actually chew through the threads holding in the humvee windows, and while they can't smell what's in an MRE, they KNOW there's food in there. It's gotten pretty bad out in the training areas. But hey, that's their home...

Ok, I was living in a certain part of san francisco in this big home. the roof had like three foot high walls and flooded sometimes when it rained. I'd be in the kitchen hearing this running and splashing on the roof. I come to find out that there were bunch of them coons treating it like the local swimming pool. LOL...

On a different occasion, i was washing dishes when i suddenly saw this head hanging upside down outside the window looking at me. scared the living bejeebus out of me.

Not in terms of sourcing assertions. ;)

But yeah, as far 'right' as I am, he is about as far 'left'.

Yeah, I can actually cite reference material and source my assertions whereas 1bad here relies mostly on hyperbole, rhetoric, hearsay and rush limbaugh rants as his content repository. ;)

If you think I'm left, you are mentally deficient.
If you think you are "right" you are wrong.

There is every indication that you are a pseudo libertarian with fascist leanings.

there is nothing indicating I am communist. I hate communism. There is also nothing indicating I believe capitalism is an extension of freedom or democracy and I see it as a mechanism of oppression, or at least that is how it tends to get used.

So, if anything, I'm a centrist with a deep desire for individuals to be responsible and accountable for their actions and words in the greater society. Which actually makes me more of an active libertarian than you are.

You (1badbj) by all indications, can't get past division. You go so far as to create it and try to nourish that division which makes you the fascist as I see you because you are using that old **** tactic to try and create division from which you can launch your rhetorical tirades.

I'd bet if you listed every source you posted vs every one I posted, I'd be stunned if I haven't posted 10x what you have.

I've explained before I don't subscribe to the 'left vs right' way of thinking, but I use it because that's what most people are familiar with.

Look up the definition of 'Fascism' and then tell me how someone such as myself who calls for limited Government and individual liberties fits that definition.

I dont think you're a communist. IMO you're a socialist.

As to capitalism vs freedom, how do you explain that free countries like the USA, UK, and Western Europe pracitce capitalism primarily, while dictatorships like the USSR, North Korea, and Cuba despise capitalism?

As to you being for responsibility, that's a joke. Anyone who advocates welfare and socialized medicine is not for personal responsibility, they are for one group supporting another. Which is the polor opposite of personal responsibilty. And this may be news for you, but libertarians call for smaller Government and personal freedoms, things I advocate. While people such as yourself call for large Gov't and loss of personal freedoms. How you've gotten that mixed up is beyond me. Someone of your advanced intellect should not be getting those things bass-ackwards. ;)

Division and debate are good things. This country was founded on the DIVISION of power, fyi. Those places like Cuba, North Korea, etc allow no division politically. And you can't with a straight face call those places bastions of freedom. The fact that you and I can disagree is a great thing. And as much as I despise what people like you call for, I'd be the first to stand up if someone tried to take that freedom away.

Ask yourself, would you be protesting or would you be celebrating if people like me, Rush, Glen Beck, Sarah Palin, etc were jailed for saying what we say?

*a bunch of stuff*

lol, dude that's all you got? cuba and north korea?

What about your United States?
What exactly is the difference in your two party system?
Where is the tangible evidence fo there actualy being a difference when it comes right down to it.

democrats and republican feed the kitty of war consistently and without fail.
the people eat more and more of a big crap sandwich every day that passes.

hmmm, come to think of it, you probably could use another revolution down there. shake it up a bit. :)

I didn't feel like naming every Communist country, so I just named a few.

FYI, Communist countries have ONE PARTY systems. Would you rather have one Party to choose from or two?

So if you can't see a difference between a one Party system and a two Party system, I don't know what to say.

If you can't see a difference, you're either blind or not looking hard enough.

As to crap sandwiches, the people in liberal-run cities like Detroit, Newark, and Washington DC have to eat alot more of them than people in cities not ran by liberals for decades.
