I remember many years ago about a piece of news of a famous movie star in Hong Kong who was also a Wing Chun practitioner - he had a fight in the bar with a big and tall westerner who was then a police academy karate trainer. Both of them were drunk and involved in quite a fierce fight in the dark and confined area in the bar. Guess who won? The movie star did.

While I miss my beloved Kyokushin at times, I believe that what Royama is doing and attempting to do ( adding gloved face strikes) is what is best for kyokushin.
Eventually I would love to see Kyokushin enter the realm of Kudo/Daidojuku, sans helmet.

I have an idea. Post a video of you and your students fighting without protection and against different styles like this.

They looked pretty **** good to me. Especially when compared to most of the **** you see on the internet and in person. These guys aren't afraid to hit or be hit and to test themselves against other styles. That's a hell of a lot more than most people can say.

There's always one guy in any dojang in Korea who can kick your azz. But lots of those guys have experience in multiple martial arts (Hapkido, Sirum, Kumdo, etc...). WTF has a bad reputation in Korea for being Black Belt mills. I met more than one person (foreigner) in South Korea who had a black belt who had been doing TKD for less than 6 months. I am certain it wasn't an official Dan rank (probably junior black belt (name only) but still when you enroll a guy in your dojang and 3 months later he's walking around wearing a black belt it's kind of a slap in the face to those of us who have went the long route.

TKD was the first martial art I studied. I was 16. The class was taught by a gigantic black dude and his 3 sons. All were black belts who had trained in St. Louis. They were pretty good as far as TKD guys go but the class, as far as the training went was average to bad. The biggest problem I had was that lots of the techniques especially the self defense and 3 step sparring were totally unrealistic. I had been beat up on a great deal at this point as well as occasionally doing the beating myself and I had a pretty good idea as to the potential effectiveness of techniques.

I guess the biggest problem was that the techniques started in situational perspective that was totally alien to what you would find in a real instance. But to be fair that could be said of lots of martial arts in general. You know the old grab the wrist and stand there while the expert takes you to the floor with a joint lock? One thing I will say about Hapkido is that in all the ho shinzul (combat) techniques we always moved out of the effective fighting zone before we performed the technique. In TKD we just stood head to head with them which I knew was a big no no decades before I would step into a Hapkido class.

Also the self defense techniques seemed to assume the attacker was a stone statue that never moved or responded to stimuli such as stomping on his foot. 90% of the time I could totally screw the technique by moving a bit which really irritated my teachers. They also taught you to keep your guard up high and close to your face by centimeters. Works well when you're wearing sparing gloves but then we all know a point has no meaning on the street. IN all I guess they weren't the greatest teachers on earth but they had lots of hand techniques though most wouldn't stand up against a quick boxer.

Brat. Once you go on that will it work on the street road it is hard to turn back. Took me 20 years and I still have issues. But if we are honest with ourselves. If you stay out of trouble spots. Keep your mouth shut and you eyes open, odds are you will never have any street issues. I could have walked on almost everyone I encountered but I think at the time, I was looking for it as much as I was trying to avoid it. Law of Attraction WORKS as far as this is concerned, lol.

But, it does not always have to be about a street encounter. It can be for fun. Or as a sport. Think about it. I don't really know WTF rules. I think they can punch but the pointage is so low its works against them. So they players just decided to pretty much just use kicks. In so doing, they basically created boxing with their feet. If you look at it that way, it makes sense why we see them with their hands down. Ideally to slap mid level kicks away. Its faster possibly. They probably believe they can dodge head kicks and no longer worry about hands . Those are just guesses on my part. But in so doing primarily kicks, they got pretty **** good at kicking if you ask me.

Seems Im not alone. As I pointed out in an old thread. If I only used boxing barehanded against that guard with that stiff arm and pole kick with a guy that can pivot well. Im screwed. So talk your way in nice and sucker punch and don't stop until he hits the dirt. It would be my only chance if I was boxing only. I could get lucky but Im going to be eating way to much and going to the dentist for more repair work after getting stitched up at the hospital.

It is a great bareknuckle guard. It is why that many old time boxers used that extended guard and or circled their lead hand like a one arm chain punch. They also had a couple of kicks. Very similar in many ways.

Obviously boxing guards evolved and varied depending on local and rules.

Though not completely Mendoza's guard ( for those that know of him ) he may have used similar methods with his guard. As Dan shows comparing old boxing guard to Karate guards. Ive read an old book on boxing , sorry I forget the title at present. Where much of the plates showed a system that was striking similar to Okinawan arts at least in still photos. Hopefully still on topic and likely Alan and others similar my appreciate Dan's comparison of Asian systems to western systems.

Old time boxers of different periods kept that rear hand low to protect from shots to the "mark" which would be the solar plexus area. Using the front arm to manly guard head shots. Rear arm for body. Probably a 80/20 deal.
