Here is a good clip of the VT practitioner performing jum sao before doing wu sao back in the first section of SLT . Imo the reason a lot of guys teachers, sifu's use the wu sao at the wrist to drop on a tan sao. They 'lose' the inward 'freeze' point of the jum to simply relax the elbow out to bring the hand back.
The jum 'elbow in' is training the defense of the centerline inside the arm as we strike,
tan sao the outside...
later on you can see the tan sao >jum sao> tan sao>lowering huen sao>palm sequence, teaching the elbows to contract and expand using the control of the fixed elbow to align our strikes.
Later developed in dan chi-sao without wrists or retractions of arms ...all hitting, tan versus jum. tan v jum hit versus hit, using stances to back up with hip positions ...
hip backs up the elbow force exchange.
notice the elbow is brought in behind the fist before striking out....
this is how we do our SLT.
