Who is going to Legend of Kung Fu this year?
Anyone?
If you are, would you guys be interested in meeting up Friday night before the tournament for dinner?
Last year we had it at Twin Peaks Restaurant (http://www.twinpeaksrestaurant.com/#/locations/restaurant)

(Gene, as always, I am your personal chauffeur if you are coming and I got a new car befitting your legendary status this time. :D )

Edit to add:
Since Gene's seminar ends late, we are planning on meeting @ Twin Peaks between 8:30-9PM. for late dinner or just drinks. Your choice.

So far we have:
Me
Gene
Philbert
zhugeliang

I knew there was some reason to keep this forum going. Nothing like a personal chauffeur to Twin Peaks in a hot new ride.

I'm totally in. In fact, I'm scheduled to give a seminar at 5:30 on Friday (I'll have to double check the time, but I asked for it to be early to allow for some Twin Peakage)

MK, you got a fighter in the 180-200 class? I have a c0cky student that needs a lesson. I've thrown him around a few times already, but I think he needs to get knocked the F out for real. I might even be willing to put up $100 for see that happen. :D

Hey Gene, you still have my cell# right? Just text me if you still do. If not I can PM it to you.

Yep. As with last year, I will be running a belt test. So 8:30 - 9:00 works better for me. My sifu will be there teaching a seminar, so it is up for the asst. instructors to conduct the test. Our school has grown so much it typically take 4-6 of us to administer the test cause we split them between the two mats. Instead of 1hr we've been pushing 1.5-2hrs for our colored belt test.

But I totally understand. I'd never bring my wife to Twin Peaks. It's just not her scene at all.

We broke up after our Spring Break trip because of her increasing selfish attitude. I do believe when a girl says, and I quote "This trip is all about me, and me seeing my family. You are only here to meet them" it's time to move on.

That's what our party was missing - a monk and a spouse! We'll have to order extra nachos! In all seriousness, it would be really delightful to hang out with Xingying and an honor to meet your wife.

Is it Jiang Dong Xu (Shi Xing Xi) • Shaolin Traditional Longfist (http://www.legendsofkungfu.com/seminars.html#dongxujiang) seminar that will be the Tai Zu? That looks interesting. I've been really getting into Taizu lately. I've only studied it from Yan Fei and Shi Yantuo; another perspective would be fascinating.

I learned it from Wing Lam and one of my partners was Subitai (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/member.php?u=6443). I think it's documented on this VHS: The Wing Lam Kung Fu School 30th Anniversary Benefit for St. Jude Children’s Hospital (http://www.wle.com//products/vdm973.html). Three-man staff sparring is wacky, as in you can get whacked a lot. I can't imagine trying to transmit that in an 1.5 hour seminar.

Shoot, I should have made a little YouTube vid to promote my workshop....

Ha Ha, yeah my Master beats me sometimes, it was a very big hole wasn't it? I cringed when that happend but my face got some pay back when my Master decided to hit me with the next one on a more downward angle so we wouldn't put another hole in that backdrop and a piece of the stick bounced up and hit me. It was good to see you again Gene. If you love the heat so much you should move here, it is 100 or more everyday.

Chris Clark introduced a new concept for continuous light contact called Tru 2 Form. The idea was to show your style, so there was some initial forms demo before Clark called 'Fight!' It surprisingly entertaining, especially this monkey fighter who did a lot of rolling about, although many felt that the rules were ill defined and there were too many openings for injury.

I can feel lkfmdc popping a vein on this one from here.

That being said, David Chin's Hop Gar fighters fought with classic Hop Gar stances and techniques and did quite well.

I'll merge this with our other thread soon.

well, can you do those forms and fight if it is full contact and the other guy is actually hitting you?

That being said, David Chin's Hop Gar fighters fought with classic Hop Gar stances and techniques and did quite well.

The first year Sifu Chin put fighters in Sanshou was 1999 at the Baltimore NACMAF event. My guy won the gold in the 187 lb category and sifu Chin and I had a long conversation about getting ready for fights. I'm happy to hear he's still putting students in there

GeneChing

...then again, I never volunteer to enter a cage. ;)

The monkey competitor in Tru 2 Form got off some good surprising techniques that might have worked at full power. The Hop Gar guys were great. They were totally working with classical Hop Gar moves and succeeding. They were under Chris Heintzman, a student of Chin's. It was glorious. One of the fighters, the one that was using the most classic Hop Gar guard and approach, was Veron Webb. He's done well in amateur (he told me his record, which I can't remember now but it was winning mostly) and is looking to go pro MMA ASAP. He's a lightweight however, which isn't always as marketable.

Anyhow I was sent some vid clips of the event. OMG

It looked like a Shaw Brothers Casting Call.

I will say it was good intentions but nahhh.

Fighting is Fighting. Looked more like a fantasy chess game. Just one step above the fun style vs style verbal poetics battle we used to do back in the day.

My "1000 lb horse and Extended Bridge counters your mighty dragon tail kick....LOL:D

I found True to Form quite interesting actually. The monkey kung fu guys used a lot of the rolling on the ground as intended, take downs. And they worked!! The 5 animals fighter used a lot of tiger, crane snake techniques that worked. It was good to see forms applications applied in a dynamic situation. If anything else it will help folks get back to practicing forms and application again.

@Gene--

Thanks for the heads up about "David Chin's Hop Gar fighters."

If I'd only known in advance, I would have driven the four hours just to watch. But your words prompted me to do a search for some video from the tournament. No luck yet, but I did find his web site (still can't believe he has one). Maybe old news to you guys, but the man, the legend, is offering a Hop Gar seminar this fall! I'll definitely try to go.

Looking forward to more news about this tournament. Anybody have vids, please forward links.

Thanks!

MasterGohring's Channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/MasterGohring) Tom records as much as he can on flips and uploads them (unedited) from the event. I don't think he got any of the sanshou however. There's probably a lot of the Tru 2 Form event. I was amused by Tru 2 Form but the potential for argument and injury seems to great to me. I think there's viability for restricted movement sparring as a tournament event within a particular style. In essence, that's what chisao is for wing chun and tuishou is for taiji. With in PRC, there are other such events. However, when you open it up to other styles, it gets too uncontrolled. Besides, after those Hop Gar fighters showed their form effectively in the sanshou bouts, the notion of Tru 2 Form was rendered irrelevant.

WhAT!!! Why did they do that?? Got me. I went back to look and the archive folder is there, but it's completely empty. I suppose I could reload them all, but it seems rather dated now.

I'm going to load some more pix on facebook soon.

@Gene

Wow! Thank you for the link, I'll go watch immediately! It pays to come down out the hills sometimes, I suppose *makes fun of his home's topography*

I smiled when you said, "after those Hop Gar fighters showed their form effectively in the sanshou bouts, the notion of Tru 2 Form was rendered irrelevant."

But I'm probably biased! :D

Thanks again!!

Ok, quiet everybody. Dwarves in the back, stop drinking! You two. Yes, useless halfling rogues. Quiet!

*clears throat, finds appropriate narrative voice*

Your shouts of merriment have attracted a wandering monster. It appears to be a Dross, and it is staring right at you. What will you do?

Ok, everyone grab your dice and make a saving throw. If you fail it, the Dross will attempt to cast his fifth level spell, Ray of Boasting; he may also get a second attack if you save naturally. It should be known to the party that he carries a high level Club of Egoism, and if you provoke him, he will rattle off his lineage before he attacks you with it.

Do we have anyone with cleric skills in the party? Speak up now!
You might want to start your invocations.

What? *looks at the smallest halfling rogue* Whaddya mean you didn't bring your percentiles!!! Can't you at least just steal some from the dwarf????

He's lurking here. Maybe he'll post about Tru 2 Form. That would light up this ensuing flame war now, wouldn't it? He did have some interesting things to say about potential markets for this venture. As many of you know already, China has done some events that are similar in nature. IMO, this does have financial potential, but not necessarily in the way Christophe sees it. I see it this way: MMA=$; WWE=$$$$$ Just mull that over a little before you start pointing your LARPer fingers. ;)

Sorry, sir. I don't allow even my mages to carry "flame war" on them. That would just do stupid amounts of damage to ice elementals and such.

Btw...do I see Chris Heintzman in one of those photos?

Part of the issue is Jimmy Wong doesn't work with the boxing commission because they want a "tournament" format. Texas rules state you can only have 1 fight per day, so he dances around sanctioning and bonding to keep the traditional elimination format.

I'm not 100% versed in the Texas rules, but real fighters from Oklahoma won't compete in it because you get an automatic 30-day suspension from the Boxing Commission for competing in an unsanctioned match.

1.1, 1.1, 1.1, 1.1 - final score 1.1!

loser.

163 pix posted on facebook. (http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150334006874363.399995.135964689362&type=1) I'm done for now. I should note that I just select these quickly from the thumbnails of nearly 800 photos I took. I know a lot of them are blurry. My bad. Lighting is always quirky at tournaments and I generally refrain from using a flash out of respect to the competitors. Enjoy!

hahaha. that is a great pic to post on certain threads that fails. :D

I am not a camera expert but I believe increasing the ISO setting to maybe 800 - 1000 would help in taking indoor shots and not using a flash.

Over the weekend, three major martial arts tournaments took place in the North America. The 2011 Legendsof Kung Fu & Taiji Legacy World Martial Arts Championship in Plano, Texas, turned out to be a success with 550 contestants from all over the United States, Israel and Brazil, and over 2,000 spectators. President Barak Obama, Texas Governor Rick Perry, Plano Mayor Phil Dyer and other civic leaders sent in their greetings and congratulations.

Under the leadership of Master Jimmy Wong, this event has been hosted for 14 years by the USA Chin Woo Federation and sanctioned by the U.S. Traditional Kung Fu Wushu Federation in the Plano Convention Center (Plano, Texas). Each year, it features new Legends of Kung Fu and Tai Chi grand champions. After two days of highly-competitive games, this year’s titles belong to:

Beginer External Forms Grand Champion: Essay Eden (Houston, TX)
Intermediate External Forms Grand Champion: Pei Wu (Houston, TX)
Modern Wushu Forms Grand Champion: Steven Lee (Broken Arrow, OK)
Beginner Internal Forms Grand Champion: Gigi Ip (Houston, TX)
Intermediate Internal Forms Grand Champion: Queena Tong (Houston, TX)
Taiji Forms Grand Champion: Zoe Siytangco (Houston, TX)
Junior Forms Grand Champion: Ty Roberts (Killeen, TX)
Confucius Warrior Award: Lauren Yeung (Sunnyvale, CA)
Chin Woo Forms Grand Champion: Lauren Yeung (Sunnyvale, CA)

Musical Group is a unique group performance. This year’s awards go to:

External Weapon: San Antonio Shaolin Kung Fu (San Antonio, TX)
Internal Form: Red Crane School of Tai Chi (Kansas City, MO)
Internal Weapon: Red Crane School of Tai Chi (Kansas City, MO)

The Plano Centre is a full service, multi-purpose facility located near Dallas. This world-class convention center has a total of 122,500 square foot facility with an 86,400 square feet conventional hall including a large stage for performance. Master Jimmy Wong, instructors and students of J. K. Wong Kungfu Tai Chi Academy, and the members of the USA Chin Woo Federation worked tirelessly to put one of the largest tournaments in North America together. The event was well-organized and ran smoothly. It started on Friday morning (July 29) with excellent workshops and seminars hosted by masters and grandmasters. To ensure high standards, the Tournament held a “new judges and officials orientation and inquiries” session on Friday night. As usual, the Tournament amassed a group of 103 qualified grandmasters, masters and judges to judge each of the games. In general, each game was presided by one head judge, two assistants and five judges.

Saturday morning’s exhibition by 25 masters was ushered in with a magnificent drumming performance by Patty Sun. Masters Mike Barry, Kam Lee, Sam Ng, Wu Xing Ping, Donald Hamby, Florin Szondi, Sam FS Chin, Daniel Tomizaki, Chris Childs, Chun Man Sit, Yun Xiang Tseng, Paul Der Mody, Augustine Fong, Shi Xing Ying, Xueli Zhang, Huixian Chen, Andrew Chung, Johnny Lee, Blue Siytango, Ray Hildreth, Wayne Stevenson, Wuzhong Jia, George Hu, Paul Iaga and Christophe Clarke demonstrated their specialty and performed a mixture of internal and external martial arts. The exhibition ended with a lighted dragon dance.

The opening ceremony in Saturday afternoon brought all the competitors, judges, and spectators together. It consisted of an eight-lion dance, a parade of judges, and free participation of form practice. It was spectacular to witness hundreds of people practicing Tai Chi together - see a video on the left-side of the article. This year the external martial artists also got the chance to take the floor and practiced their forms. Amazingly with a few hundreds of practitioners kicking, punching and jumping in their own forms all over the floor, there wasn’t a single accident. Master Tom Gohring of Austin, TX, video-taped this and you can see it via the link here.

Saturday night’s San Shou Fight was a serious competition and the event did not end until almost midnight. It was not divided by internal, external, or style. The only division was weight class. One of the Israeli teams improvised and drummed on a plastic container which created a fun atmosphere.

This year Shifu Christopher Clarke championed a new category of sparring called True-2- Form. The goal is to promote the true arts of Chinese Martial Arts. Competitors were judged by their strikes against the opponents as well as how they applied their own art. This game won the overwhelming support of the Tournament and proved itself as a viable event. There will be a separate report on this category in this column.
