Well I don't think any other arts encourage the men to train in checkered skirts if that's what you mean. . .

Hmm...I suppose the arts of the Scottish Highlanders maybe. . .

The part where you are 200# over weight and all your students fall down for you so you don’t look like a fat tub of lard!

No way guys.

I'm telling you, it's the skirt.

Of course, they are already training an Americanized version. What self respecting Indonesian would wear jeans under their batique?

Wow, that was full of holes.

Well, many schools are dedicated to fight frozen men. Or they must be darting some paralytic on them before the make contact.

Hmmm, a thread bashing an art and/or it's practitioners, how fresh and original.

I always figure in order to be able to criticize someone's fighting ability, first you have to be able to whip him. Can you whip him?

I dunno, depends on the whip. And if he's into that sort of thing.

That is like saying Bella Karolyi can't criticize girl's gymnastics because he has never danced on a balance beam!

I, for one, am completely appauled at the levity with which this thread has been taken! These guys could obviously cream every one of you guys, since this is the art of the boogeymen of legend! I just hope the boogeyman doesn't come after all of you since you have so brazenly disparaged his art.....

Don't boogeymen melt when you throw water on them?

All joking aside, of course I think silat can be just as effective as any other art if trained properly. Just my unqualified opinion of course. Oh, and about the boogeymen. I read in that book confessions of an economic hitman that the term boogeyman that people would scare their kids into behaving with ["you'd better be good or the boogeyman'll get you..." (like he got the Dutch, and then got 'em again, and then got 'em again, etc.) actually came from an Indonesian or Malaysian pirate tribe that gave the Dutch no end of trouble during their entire colonial rule there. So if that's true, they shouldn't melt in water, lol.

Malaysian Silat gets laughed at by Malaysians mostly.
Indonesian Silat, not so much.

I don't think many here have an ill opinion of Silat. Just these guy's performance of it. For every guy that shows badly on the web, there are 2 from that style groaning in the background.

The 1st time that I heard

- BJJ guy's sweep, I had no idea how to sweep someone when I'm on the ground.

deadly or not

at least protecting you from harms

or how to avoid harms to one self is the first and last or only priority.

I suppose in order to feel superior I should say...yeah...those guys suck...but really, they don't. Yes the head guy is fat, but so are the teachers of many internal arts. I have yet to see anyone demonstrate superior techniques. They were using sound principles found throughout Chinese martial arts. Yes some people perform things better and so what? The sad fact remains that the majority of indonesian martial arts are closer to authentic kung fu than most schools that advertize "Authentic kung fu."

I liked the video, I liked it as a demo of what their school is doing. There are far worse places to train, they were learning good techniques and practicing.....that is how you get better..by practicing not by making fun of people who are practicing.

Although, "in general", I'd agree, I have seen some good MY silat - but unfortunately I've noticed it to be the exception.

Its not that, really. Its just the age old problem of getting used to a compliant atmosphere. Its was too convenient. Techniques build on each other as a rule. They can build from a vantage point of comfort, or they can build with the opponent's resistance in play. Same techniques, just a different tack on the strategies.

Everyone starts out with a dead partner. As you get better you increase the temperature on the attackers end. Maybe his school is new and the students are not yet that capable and yet he wants to demo techniques. It is still better than most schools out there. I have no affiliations whatsoever with that school or style. I always practiced in a 1-10 progression, starting off super slow and ending with my hardest hit. The other person quickly would find where their technique was stiff or broken this way. Always going too hard is just as bad as always attacking like a scarecrow zombie.
