This type of training, I mean. It's obviously supposed to be cold there, judging from their attire afterward.

This cold weather stuff is fairly typical in some schools of karate. Do you guys think it has value?

Great if you are going to fight a waterfall or the cold air.

It's supposed to teach focus and to ignore pain and other distraction unless im wrong. In the military do they not put you through uncomfortable stuff just to make you uncomfortable. Things that have little to do with the actions you are trying to accomplish. Things like sleep deprivation, rolling in sand and mud. I can see some use in these things. I sometimes like to practice in my street cloths because im not always going to be wearing my light training pants and shoes. I may have to fight with an injured arm or blinded by sweat or blood, sand, sun. I don't think it has much to do with being cold so much as being able to focus on what your doing while not being comfortable.

It makes you feel tough.

I agree with wolf 3001.

It's an exercise in focus. Just like any military group has you doing stuff in full kit, in the cold, going in mudwater, under razor wire across a field while being shelled.

That kind of event doesn't actually occur much in the field anymore, but they train it anyway. Toughens the men, weeds out the puzzies, lets the unit get better.

I used to take a cold shower before morning workouts to help wake me up and get focused.

Now I just run cold water over my feet - has the same effect and I don't wake anyone up with my girlie screams:D

I know a lot of guys who swear by cold water dousing. It definitely has a stimulating effect on your nervous system and I feel it helps me tolerate the cold better.

Also I know a lot of athletes use hot/cold contrast showers or baths to speed up the recovery process. But, I think the research is lacking in that department. (http://www.f3hydropool.com/pdf/ReviewAthleteRecoveryHotVCold.pdf)

Taikgyo (sp?) is waterfall training as practiced by Gogen Yamaguchi, founder of Japanese Goju-kai. It focuses the mind and body, and strengthens your resolve.
These guys are an Argentine goju dojo, so they are emulating Yamaguchi.

It's also a religious ritual associated with Shinto. Known as shugyo, austere discipline for its own sake, not toward any specific goal.
