Haven't seen the clip yet but it seems to me that alcohol as a solvent removes built up oil and dirt but does not polish the steel. Powdered stone is intended to polish while it cleans. Many use clove oil for the final wipe down. I find that WD-40 seems to work at least as well.

BTW I have a friend who is a licensed Japanese swordsmith. He says he never uses the special paper for cleaning but only Kleenex or any good brand of soft tissues.

Still use the stone powder once a month or so but I'm thinking of trying whiting (pulverized chalk) instead. It used to be sold for cleaning glass and shouldn't be abrasive to the steel. Save money.

I don't use WD40 because it is a 'liquid wrench'. There are solvents in the WD40 secret formula that are designed to penetrate frozen bolts and such, and some knife and sword people feel that it's too abrasive, especially on high grade blades. That being said, back when I made swords, we'd clean cosmoline off our Russian blades by soaking them in a tube filled with acetone. Of course, that's a tad extreme as I doubt anyone here is using cosmoline on their sword blades. It was protective used for industrial shipping, as the sword shop I used to work for bought Russian blades in bulk (this was for fencing).

I would be remiss in my job here if I didn't point out that MartialArtsMart.com offers Traditional Sword Maintenance kits (http://www.martialartsmart.com/35-1003.html) and Hanwei Sword Oil (http://www.martialartsmart.com/45-2110.html). I use Hanwei Sword oil personally. In fact, I just had to clean out my workout bag because I failed to seal the cap on my oil container :(, which is really funny because I haven't brought a sword that needs oiling to practice in many moons. I used to use a lot of gun cleaning products on my swords, but I've been getting such good results with Hanwei and I like to support that company.
