I suppose that the pole did fight off plenty of jap pirates with long blades, but the WC pole was for poling the boats in shallow water, and it was trained also for defending against pirates trying to board the boats. It was used to fend them off. The people of the red boats developed this tool as well as the beginnings of WC. That might not be right, but it is about as close to right as anyone else knows.
