I just got this press release from a Stunt People rep.
DEATH GRIP CASTS JOHNNY YONG BOSCH AS LEAD ROLE
Former Power Rangers Icon Johnny Yong Bosch To Star In Death Grip Movie
San Francisco, CA - Death Grip, the latest feature-length action film from The Stunt People founder Eric Jacobus, has signed on Johnny Yong Bosch to play lead role "Torch". Johnny Yong Bosch is best known for his role as Adam Park, the Black Ranger on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, as well as numerous voice acting roles for successful video games and anime series.
In addition to writing and directing the film, Eric Jacobus will also be playing lead role "Kenny". Fellow Stunt People members hold the remaining roles, including leads played by producer and assistant director Rebecca Ahn and Nathan Hoskins, and supporting roles played by co-producer Edward Kahana Jr., Ray Carbonel, Chelsea Steffensen, Alvin Hsing, Lucas Okuma, and Shaun Finney. Death Grip is currently in production and scheduled to release in early 2012.
Death Grip tells the story of ex-thief turned lowly caterer Kenny Zemacus, who after 15 years of estrangement checks his idiot savant brother Mark out of the nearby care facility, promising to provide him with a better home. Assigned a last minute museum catering gig, Kenny reluctantly brings Mark along, who is immediately captivated by the museum's showpiece - the world-renowned Sacred Coin of Judas. When an elaborate heist unfolds to steal the coin, Mark's childlike fascination unwittingly entangles the two brothers in the middle, pinning them with the crime. Now Kenny must descend into the thieves' dark world to clear their names and save his brother from the coin’s mysterious allure. But both brothers are about the discover the true depths of the hell they must face to reach each other, and just how deadly the Coin’s grasp can be.
Death Grip will be director Eric Jacobus' second foray into the Action Kickback movement, following his directorial debut Contour (2006), which released to critical acclaim and was praised as "one of the most exciting martial arts movies to come out of the West" (Impact Magazine, July 2007).
Action Kickback is a revolutionary new action film movement that unites authentic, technical fight choreography with engaging storytelling. The Action Kickback film model advocates stronger integration of fight choreographers and talented writers in the production team, producing an action experience that won’t soon be forgotten.
Martial Arts Movie Junkie recently claimed "The Stunt People are a group that is synonymous with great action in the online realms”.
In addition, Kung Fu Cinema praised The Stunt People’s first feature-length indie actioner Contour, which released “to much acclaim from a niche cadre of diehard fans of high-impact, Hong Kong-style screen fighting”, and that “Now the team is returning with a new action film and a new attitude.”
Eric Jacobus founded The Stunt People in 2001, which emerged as "the premiere independent action group" (Kung Fu Cinema), hot on the heels of the aging Hong Kong action film industry. Under Eric’s leadership, The Stunt People grew into a group of over thirty martial artists, stuntmen and women renowned for their distinctive "Hong Kong" style of action. The Stunt People have been responsible for the action behind over a hundred productions including Love Aaj Kal (Imtiaz Ali, 2009) and Discovery Channel's Time Warp ("Stuntmen", season 1 ep. 17). Since their work on cult classics such as Undercut and Contour, The Stunt People have carved a niche in the new Action Kickback film genre and inspired dozens of groups worldwide to follow in their footsteps.
