20 years wow it is a long and ongoing tradition.

I knew many CMA journals or magazines ended in a decade or shorter.

at the time of ibook, ebook, i zine and e zine.

paper printed magazine is a time venerated/proven thing.

thank you the editors and authors of all the articles.

I think 21 will be the big one. Then we can take Kung Fu Tai Chi Magazine out and get it drunk. Then to the back of the pick-up to get it pregnant so it can have baby sub domains and offshoot ezines and apps!

With our previous limited edition shirts (our 10 Year, our 15 Year and our annual zodiac (http://www.kungfumagazine.com/info/horoscope/index.php) shirts), we make enough prints to cover the year and there's usually a few left over after Dec 31st, so we keep selling them until they run out.

20 martial arts masters celebrate the 20th Anniversary of KFTCM (http://www.examiner.com/tai-chi-in-national/20-martial-arts-masters-celebrate-the-20th-anniversary-of-kftcm)
Violet Li
Tai Chi Examiner

To the global martial arts community, the celebration of the 20th anniversary of Kung Fu Tai Chi Magazine(KFTC Magazine) is one of the largest events in 2012.

Established in 1992,Kung Fu Tai Chi Magazine started as a quarterly and became a bimonthly in 1996. In 2000, it changed to a monthly but went back to a bimonthly in 2001. It is the largest English publication for Kung Fu, Wushu, Tai Chi and Qigong. The magazine is distributed in over 40 countries, although many countries only get a few copies through selected distributors. KFTC Magazine has always been a newsstand magazine. It is available in many major chains such as Barnes & Noble and Books-A-Million. Due to the recent decline in newsstand distribution, all niche magazines have limited distribution and many have been taken off newsstands. But KFTC Magazine is still proudly selling on the newsstands. After the closure of Border Stores last year, KFTC Magazine ventured into the electronic space and worked with Zinio, the largest online newsstand. Now KFTC Magazine is available for Apple’s iPad, iPhone and iPod, Amazon’s Kindle Fire, Barns & Noble’s Nook, HTC’s Flyer, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, and other e-readers.

People in the global martial art community appreciate the contribution KFTC Magazine has made over the past two decades in promoting Kung Fu, Wushu, Tai Chi and Wude (martial arts ethics). Through its in-depth and unbiased reports, martial arts practitioners learn martial art philosophy, principles and techniques as well as exciting stories of masters of our time. Equally important to the writing is the photos they use in every issue of KFTC Magazine, which clearly illustrate martial arts in details.

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the management of KFTC Magazine has been working hard to put together a world-class program in conjunction of its annual Tiger Claw Kungfu Magazine Championship (TCKFMC). Its Organizing Committee consists of Grandmaster Dennis Brown, San Jose City Councilmember Kansen Chu, Promoter Joe Ellis, Grandmaster Fu Biao, Grandmaster Lily Lau, Grandmaster Liang Shou-you, Coach Christopher Pei, Grandmaster Ren Guang-Yi, Coach Wu Bin, Dr. James Yu, KFTC Magazine Publisher Gigi Ou, and KFTC Magazine Associate Publisher Gene Ching. The celebration will take place in San Jose, CA on June 9 – 10. As of now, 20 masters and grandmasters already committed to attend tthis event. They will demonstrate their astonishing martial arts skills at the Gala in the evening of Saturday June 9th and some may host workshops as well.

The 20 prominent masters/grandmasters are: Fanziquan and Zhaobao Tai Chi Grandmaster Bai Wenxiang, Hop Gar Kung Fu and Guang Ping Tai Chi Grandmaster David Chin, Hung Gar Kung Fu Grandmaster Chiu Chi Ling, T'ien Shan P'ai Grandmaster Dennis Brown, Chen Style Tai Chi Grandmaster Ren Guang-Yi, San Da and Qin Na Master He Tao, Eagle Claw Grandmaster Lily Lau, fighting champion and Grandmaster Hoy Lee, Hung Gar Kung FuGrandmaster John Leong, Choy Lay Fut Grandmaster Li Siu Hung, Internal Style Martial Arts Master and Water Boxing creator Helen Liang, Qigong and Internal Martial Arts Grandmaster Liang Shou-Yu, Wing Chun, Tae Kwon Do and Tai Chi Grandmaster Benny Meng, Chain Grandmaster Dino Salvatera, Jing Quan Dao Grandmaster Alex Tao, Iron Crotch Grandmaster Tu Jin-Sheng, Chen Style Tai Chi and weapon Grandmaster Wang Zhihai, Chin Woo and Wu-Hao Tai Chi Grandmaster Jimmy Wong, Superstar Jet Li’s teacher Wu Bin, and Shaolin and Yang Style Tai Chi Grandmaster Dr. Yang Jwing-Ming. You can learn more about each master/grandmaster by clicking his/her name. You can also see their photo in the slide show on the left hand side.

Associate Publisher Gene says that more masters and grandmasters will be attending this event. You can check their wetsite for the updated list later. This will be a rare occasion that so many outstanding masters/grandmasters will be performing underneath one roof. It would be an unique experience for martial art enthusiasts to cherish for years to come. Get your ticket to the Gala soon before they are all gone. You can click here for more info.

How late can one sponsor or get tickets Gene?

GeneChing
03-22-2012, 03:38 PM
We usually print the program about two weeks before the event, after most everything is nailed down. Programs are always subject to change, just like fight cards. You know the deal.

As for tickets, the banquet will sell out soon. We only have room for about 500 people. There's less than a 100 seats left. We've already sold a dozen tables (http://www.kungfumagazine.com/info/tournament/sponsors_2012.php) and a few more table sales are pending.

Here's a quick update:

4th Tiger Claw's KungFuMagazine.com Championship is nearing the cap. We have only a hundred or so slots left for competitors.

KUNG FU TAI CHI 20 YEARS GALA BANQUET is almost sold out. I think there are less than 2 dozen seats still available.

We met with San Jose officials yesterday to discuss KUNG FU TAI CHI DAY (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/info/tournament/KFTCDAY_2012.php). That's all coming together smoothly.

Only one month left before the 4th Annual Tiger Claw’s KungFuMagazine Championship (TCKFMC) taking place on June 9th at McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California. In conjunction with the celebration of the 20th anniversary of Kung Fu Tai Chi Magazine, this Championship is bigger than ever with 206 divisions including two new divisions of Duilian (weapon) Sparring Set. There will be hundreds of martial art experts, judges and champions attending these events including 38 masters/grandmasters. These programs will be one of the biggest events in the global martial art community in 2012.

The 2012 Championship encompasses Chinese Martial Arts Empty Hand forms, Chinese Martial Arts Weapon forms, Tai Chi, Wing Chun, Restricted-step Push Hands, Moving Push Hands, and special categories of Songshan Shaolin, WildAid, and others. Most of the categories have divisions by skill level and age group. Push Hands and Wing Chun Chi Shou are divided by gender and body weight, so are the special categories. 22 Grand Champion titles will be awarded to different age groups along with skill level. In the past, the TCKFMC Championship tournaments were very competitive. To encourage participation and promote martial arts, TCKFMC made the event fun, versatile and family-friendly. They will award all first-timers a trophy. According to TCKMC’s philosophy, the first-timer divisions are confidence building.

Spent the whole day setting up South Hall and Cesar Chavez. It's been a long one, but things are in place. Managed to make it up to the tail end of the welcoming banquet back near the office, and picked up Master Grace Wu-Monnat on the way. My shifu, Shi Decheng, arrived a little while later - straight from Europe - and I took him and Master Jimmy Wong back to the hotel. While I should try to grab some rest, it's way too early to crash and after seeing so many old friends I haven't seen in years at banquet #1, I'm going to prowl the hotels for a spell to see who's still up and about. The late nights will probably be the only chance I get for some real quality time, as the days will surely be filled with a lot of resolving issues.

But it's all good. I train for this kind of endurance.

There are so many embellishments to this article that I almost don't know where to start. First off, the bit about the cover is totally BS. Her agents contacted us about putting her on the cover when she was first applying to compete, but we didn't know her at all, so we replied with a clear 'no'. Now that her publicity people have pulled this stunt, it's even more unlikely. That's right - more unlikely than 'no'.

Frequently martial art practitioners tell me that they don’t have a qualified instructor in town to study from. People are happy if they can see a master. They feel great when they actually meet a lineage holder. So how would you describe an event that you can rub elbows with a dozen of masters and grandmasters? You probably will be overjoyed. And how would you feel if you are with over 50 masters/grandmasters in one room? Trust me that you will have to pinch yourself and to realize it is not a dream.

I was one of a couple of thousands luckiest practitioners who witnessed the great events put together by Kung Fu Tai Chi Magazine (KFTCM), Tiger Claw Group and Shark City Nationals to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Kung Fu Tai Chi Magazine on June 9 -10 in San Jose, California.

Established in 1992, KFTCM has been one of the most important establishments that promotes Chinese martial Arts and Qigong in the world. It is the largest English print media on Kung Fu, Tai Chi, Wushu and Qigong with distribution in the U.S. and overseas. Later with its online magazine eZine and now with its mobile version, Kung Fu Tai Chi Magazine is accessible anywhere and anytime in the world.

In the past 20 years, KFTCM has spent great effort to discover hidden treasure and presented the best of the Kung Fu in each category to the global community. KFTCM has introduced hundreds of masters to the global arena to educate practitioners of all interests. Readers enjoy learning the secret techniques and profound theories of the various Wushu as well as the exciting story behind the success of a master. KFTCM is a staple for martial artists.

In an Internet age when news is free for all online, newspapers and magazines folded one after the other. Martial Arts print media has been severely impacted. But the leadership of Kung Fu Tai Chi Magazine continues to invest for better printing, high quality reporting and new technology and the magazine is surviving well or thriving. They appreciate the support from the martial art community so they put on world-class events to show their gratefulness to celebrate its anniversary. They invited all the past cover masters along with many other masters/grandmasters to the three major celebration events. At least 50 paid their own way to San Jose and many came as far as China just for the two-day extravaganzas.

The 4th Annual Tiger Claw Kung Fu Magazine Champions was hosted on Saturday 6/9. The turnout was totally unexpected. There were over 500 contestants coming from various parts of the North America and China competing in 206 divisions and ended up with 23 grand champions in various categories – see a video on the left for the highlights. For the list of the grand champions, click the link here. Additionally, Qibo Sun won Wildaid Tiger Claw Champion and Yang Chengiun won Songshan Shaolin Champion -- You can click a link here to see some the highlights of the Wildaid tournament. Many of the masters served as judges for the tournament making it a high-standard international competition.

The KFTCM Gala Banquet was a sold-out. Actually, due to the overwhelming participation, KFTCM had to add tables to accommodate 450 celebrities, masters and guests. Forty masters/grandmasters performed on stage. The entire banquet room was electrified with high energy.

Audience’s jaws dropped when the 74-year old Wah Lum Mantis Grandmaster Chan Pui descended on the floor swiftly and popped right up effortless, the 70-year old Eagle Claw Grandmaster LiLy Lau did a double lotus kick with the foot touching her forehead and the 70-year old Grandmaster Liang Shou Yu flew in the air with a straight sword.

You would not know which one of the astonishing stunts hurt most, whether it was Master/Monk Shi Yanran staying flat in the air with few spears “supporting” his entire body, Master Jin Le turning his foot totally backwards, Master/Monk Shi Yongyao letting others kick his crotch, the 20-year old Jenny Tu bending a spear at her throat, or Master Phillip Wong throwing himself on the ground hard like a drunkard.

Master Helen Liang’s Wuji boxing and Master Chen Bing’s Chen Style Tai Chi were exquisite so was Master Yang Chenhan’s Free Spirit Taking Down. Grandmaster Ren Guangyi delivered a thunderous impression with his Chen Style Tai Chi.

Masters/Grandmasters Grace Wu-Monnat, Wayne Peng, Li Siu Hung, Benny Meng, Jack Fu, Wang Zhihai, Daniel Tomizaki, Dino Salvatera, Jimmy Wong, Yang Jwing-Ming and Mai Yu Qiang all performed not-commonly practiced traditional Kung Fu forms, which really brought the richness of Chinese martial arts to the audience.

Masters/Grandmaster Mimi Chan, Bai Wenxiang, He Tao, Dennis Brown, Zou Yunjian, David Chin, Zhang Hongmei, Alex Tao, Chen Yanyang, Chen Tongshan, Daniel Weng, Hoy Lee, John Leong, and Wang Tat Mau all demonstrated their own specialty.

Grandmaster Tu Jin-Sheng had not performed his famous amazing act of Chinese Calligraphy for a while. It was a special treat for the audience to witness him do the beautiful Chinese calligraphy live in front of them while standing on eggs.

There was star power at the banquet. Hollywood superstar Jet Li’s famous coach Wu Bin made a special trip from China for this event. His new protégé martial art champion and movie star gorgeous Monica Wang was a co-host for the Banquet show. Action movie superstar Jacky Chan’s only inheritor movie star Jack Tu came from Beijing to celebrate. He co-hosted part of the show and also performed his own creation Kung Fu Whip. Appeared in many Kung Fu movies, Grandmaster Chiu Chi Ling is best known for his part in Kung Fu Hustle. He demonstrated a Hung Gar form. Prominent global business leader and CEO of Digital Media Jonathan Miller first time publicly demonstrated his passion for Tai Chi by performing a Chen Style Tai Chi routine.

On Sunday 6/10, KFTCM hosted a large Kung Fu Tai Chi Day, which is a free Street Fair from 10 am till 3 pm in downtown San Jose and attracted close 2,000 people. Masters/Grandmasters Bai Wenxiang, Jack Xueli Fu, He Tao, Benny Meng, Shi Yanran, Alex Tao, Jin Le, Jack Tu, Monica Wang and others performed. Beijing Shaolin Wushu School and Beijing Shaolin Wushu School along with many U.S. and Californian martial art schools provided all kinds of exciting Kung Fu demonstrations. There were also free Shaolin Kung Fu, Tai Chi and Wing Chun workshops hosted by various schools. KFTCM Publisher Gigi Ou said that they want to use this event to promote Chinese martial arts to the general public.

Financially, it was extremely costly for KFTCM and Tiger Claw Group to host all three major events. Employees of both companies spent more than a year and countless hours to prepare and execute the plan. Everything went well. Not only the competitors and audience were grateful for KFTCM/Tiger Claw Group’s effort to put these together. Masters were very excited that such a large event was so well organized for the benefit of the global martial art community. Masters also cherished the opportunity to reunite with their peers whom they have not seen for years in some cases.

Kung Fu Tai Chi 20 years Anniversary and HKB Wing Chun trip to SF, SJ and LA trip 6/8/12 to 6/18/12 (http://www.facebook.com/notes/benny-meng/kung-fu-tai-chi-20-years-anniversary-and-hkb-wing-chun-trip-to-sf-sj-and-la-trip/465865623425364?notif_t=note_tag)
by Benny Meng on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at 12:04pm ·

Sifu Aaron drop us off at the airport in late Friday afternoon on June 8th.We did not get to the hotel until 2:00 AM. Saturday morning I and Vincent got up early for the competition registration. The tournament committee members were professional and very helpful. The is one of the largest tournaments in the West Coast. It consists of two major systems; Karate and Kung Fu. I highly recommend this championship. Representing HKB Meng's of Dayton and Houston were Vincent Meng, Julian Habib, and Andrew Nurre. Grand Master Lin, myself, Master Ryan, Master Ahmed and Sifu Duran were there as coaches. This was Vincent's second time competing in a Wing Chun division, and a first for Andrew. Vincent ended up 2nd in Forms, Andrew placed 1st in Wing Chun Forms and 3rd in Youth Kung Fu Open Forms.

After the competition, the Kung Fu Tai Chi 20 years Anniversary celebration started with VIP photo shoots, a GALA Banquet, an awards banquet and dinner, and Master's Demonstrations. I was also pulled aside for an interview on my perspective on Kung Fu for the last 20 years. Grand Master Lin, my family and I were at the same table as famous fighter and actor Cung Le. He's currently focusing everything on his upcoming fight in Vegas in July. At the same time, he's working on 2-3 movies. Due to his training schedule, he actually had to leave the dinner early. We'll all be rooting for him in July. It was a great time to meet new friends, as well as catch up on old friends. I believe this was the largest gathering of Kung Fu Legends in one place, at one time. I salute TC Media for organizing such an amazing event in celebration of their 20th anniversary. The tournament and banquet were first class! The crews at TC media ran out of their way to make sure everyone gets a first-class treatment. As a cover issue martial artist, they really took care of me and my family, giving me the VIP treatment! We finished the night with an after-banquet party. It was an honor for me to perform side-by-side with Grand Master Lin, in front of such an honorable and knowledgeable audience. I believe Grand Master Lin and the rest of our team had a great time. It was a wonderful opportunity for photos and making new friends among the elite who's-who of the martial arts community.

Sunday was Kung Fu Tai Chi Day, hosted at the Cesar Chavez Park, adjacent to the San Jose Convention Center. The morning's activities included a Lion Dance and Master's Demonstrations featuring many excellent martial artists. I was honored to be selected as one of the Grand Master's to go through the ceremony to awaken the Lion, called the Eye Dotting Ceremony. We paint the Lion as a way to bring the Lion's energy to life. We had an opportunity to interact with members of the Wing Chun Community, and went through a mini-workshop right on the spot... including an impromptu demonstration of Wing Chun's Evolution, with a demonstration of Ip Man Wing Chun then moved backwards in time to older systems, from Fatshan to Secret Society to Shaolin Wing Chun (which is known as Hek Ki Boen Eng Chun today). The performers of the demonstration included Master Ryan, Master Ahmed, Instructor Duran, and me. We also demonstrated four special unique skills of Wing Chun. After Sunday's demonstration and workshop, we headed out to the Golden Gate Park to practice HKB on the beach, rehearsing for the DVD to be recorded the next day. We took many photos on the beach, and there were UFO in most of the photos. People always say that HKB Black Flag Eng Chun is out of this world. I think the UFO were checking us out. Making sure that this art is not watered down after more than 300 years. :)

When we arrived early Monday morning at TC media, Gigi and her crew were ready for us. The plan was to make three DVDs. The first one was on the HKB system, covering the basic fundamentals: stances, footwork and hand methods. This first HKB DVD key pairs you for the second DVD. The participants of this DVD were Master Ryan from Houston, Master Ahmed from Chicago and Junior Instructor Vincent Meng from Dayton Ohio. Overall I was the main person on this first DVD, acting as host and MC. The second DVD featured Grand Master Lin as host and MC, and was primarily on the topic of the Shaolin HKB 18 Lohan Hands. The Shaolin HKB 18 Lohan Hands was the genesis to the Eng Chun system. It started as Saan Sik, separate and loose movements for fighting. This material should not be confused with the 18 Lohan Fist system of the Northern Shaolin Temple. This second DVD was quite historical - it was the first public video on this topic. Grand Master Lin covered solo, partner, and application training for the Shaolin HKB 18 Lohan Hands. The third DVD was the first of the Baat Jaam Dao in the VTM Ip Man Wing Chun Instructional Series. This first DVD covered Sections 1-4 of the double knives, which are the sections dealing with countering with long weapons. My partner for this DVD was Master Brad Ryan. This DVDs contains many 1st in the Ip Man lineage, with never-before available information including unique training methods and strategy and tactics of the knife. Overall, it was a very successful day - but don't kid yourself: filming is a difficult business. However, we did receive a compliment - we were the most efficient to work with. Normally it takes 2-3 days to shoot one DVD, but we shot 3 DVDs in one afternoon.

After everything was completed on Monday, we had the opportunity to have discussions with the TC Media team, including the always interested Gene Ching. With their excellent service, genuine interest, and top level professionalism we discussed many topics to continue to grow our long-term relationships. Gene also had a chance to look at the latest article and it will be coming out soon. I'll keep the topic to myself for now, but I promise that it will be very informative. After a great weekend with TC Media, we ended with a celebration dinner in a special, Muslim Chinese restaurant.

Everything up to this point was great. I want to again acknowledge and thank all the professionals at TC Media - Gigi and her crew were fantastic hosts. I also want to acknowledge and thank my students and instructors, without their support trips like this wouldn't be possible. And I would like to thank Grand Master Lin for his tireless effort in promoting and teaching Shaolin HKB; as the successor of the system, he took every opportunity on the trip to teach us and improve our skills. Finally, my undying thanks goes to my Wife, Sunmi P. Meng - this trip was made all the more special by sharing it with you and our sons. Thank you to everyone who came on this trip: Grand Master Lin, Sunmi, Vincent, Spencer, Derickson, Master Brad Ryan, Master Sajid Ahmed, Instructor Daniel Duran, Julian Habib, and Andrew Nurre.

After the exciting weekend in San Jose, Grand Master Lin, Master Sajid Ahmed and my family we all drove down to Los Angeles. We visited many martial arts school. Vincent had the opportunity to train with Master Jimmy Kim. He is a formal gold medalists heavyweight in the Tae Kwon Do 1988 Olympic game. The most important thing is that we discovered that there were many interests on HKB Black Flag Eng Chun in the West Coast. We will definitely address that the in the near future. From Disneyland, to the beach, to good eating was on the agenda. Of course training with Grand Master Lin everyday!
"always interested'... hehe, sure, that's me all right. ;)

Im Very dissapointed that my lessons about being a good and rightgeous person did not succeed by my student , I have to apologize to the Wing Chun community for having supported his Lie about Black Flag Wing Chun my reasons for doing so wer...e none other then to help him set his business up in the US as he convinced me that Wing Chun would be the way to go marketing wise,i did not realise the consequence of this decision.

Again my sincere apologies for making this mistake, and i hope that my ex student can do the same,by disclosing the truth and giving his apologies to the Wing Chun world. in the past i have on several occasions followed his instructions to talk about my Teachers art as Wing Chun but i want to make it very clear that my teacher told me personally that the art is called 18 Lohan Hand.

Born in An Hui, China, Monica Wang (aka Wang Yin) has always been outstanding among her peers. At 5’7”, she is tall compared to the average Chinese woman’s 5’. At age 5, Monica was chosen to perform on stage. She was selected to study at An Hui Huang Mei Opera Academy and became a famous Huang Mei Opera star because of her natural beauty and stunning voice.

At age 17, Monica was admitted to the most prestigious and selective Central Academy of Drama in Beijing, where internationally renowned movie stars Gong Li (Red Sorghum, Farewell My Concubine, Curse of the Golden Flower, and Miami Vice with Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell) and Zhang Ziyi (The Road Home, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Rush Hour 2, and House of Flying Daggers) and many others were educated.

Besides acting, Wang Yin also took voice and dance lessons. During a movie shooting, Wang had a taste of Chinese Kung Fu and was fascinated by it. Later, she got to know famous coach Wu Bin, who was the Hollywood superstar Jet Li’s teacher. Coach Wu agreed to train her and she considers herself very fortunate. She studies Long Fist and weapons for a few years. She also studies Li Family Style Tai Chi from Wu.

Last year, Monica won gold medals in Long Fist and Sword in Hong Kong International Wushu Opens. Recently, she participated in the 4th Tiger Claw Kung Fu Champions in San Jose, California and won a gold medal for a Tai Chi form.

She was voted as Miss An Hui. She also outperformed 49 other talented beauties in the 2011 National Miss Hospitality Pageant sponsored by the Tourist Association with her look, talents and knowledge on environmental protection. The judges praised her for her gorgeous look with a traditional Chinese virtue.

Wang also won the 3rd place in a talent show sponsored by the Central TV Station similar to America’s Got Talent last year.

She co-hosted the Kung Fu Magazine 20th Anniversary Kung Fu Tai Chi Gala Banquet with Coach Chris Pei in San Jose, California. She charmed the audience with her gentle persona and magnificent looks. She also appeared on the Kung Fu Tai Chi Day to demonstrate her Tai Chi Fan (see the video on the left hand side).

Monica has not played a major role in a movie yet. But with her talent, amicable personality and great martial art skills, she might soon be the next Jet Li.

Now I should confess that I only did one VIP interview for our upcoming issue, which spotlights KFTC 20 YEARS, and yes, that interview was with Monica. ;)

Like I said on our KFTC for iPad thread (http://ezine.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1097442#post1097442), keeping up with all the different tablet/smart phone platforms is a challenge. There are so many platforms and it's an investment for each one, with no guarantee of payout.

Unless you are in the media industry, you may not know who Jonathan Miller is. But you probably have some “connections” with him if you own shares of America Online (AOL) stocks, you play video games on IGN or watch TV and movies on Hulu.

Jonathan Miller graduated from Harvard College with honors and embarked his career as a media executive by serving as Vice President of programming at NBA Entertainment for the National Basketball Association at age 30. Later, he became a managing director of Nickelodeon International, a unit of Viacom’s MTV Networks, and successfully launched Nickelodeon in the U.K. From 2000 to 2002, Jon ventured into the e-commerce world by working for Barry Diller’s USA Networks (now IACI and Expedia) as CEO and President. Immediately, his talent of managing the fast changing technology-driven business has won him respect from the global digital media industry. In 2002, Jon was brought into AOL Time Warner – AOL purchased Time Warner in 2000 and then split in 2009 -- to resuscitate the media conglomerate. Jon left AOL in 2006. People in the media and financial industries credited Jon for his razor sharp operations and bold strategy to transform AOL from a subscription-based company to an advertisement-revenue-generating business. Herb Scannell, former vice-chairman of MTV Networks, calls Miller "one of the smartest guys I have come across in the media world." After AOL, Jon co-founded Velocity Investment (later became Velocity Interactive Group), an investment firm focusing on digital media and consumer Internet. He was also highly sought after by Wall Street tycoon Carl Icahn and Yahoo!. In March 2009, Jon became the Chairman and CEO of News Corporation’s digital media group and News Corporation’s Chief Digital Officer overseeing the global strategy of digital initiatives for News Corp and directing the management of digital media, including Fox Interactive Media and Hulu. He is an invisible hand that shapes the global digital media landscape. Currently he also serves on the Board of the American Film Institute and is a Trustee of both Emerson College and WNYC public radio station in New York. According to Bloomberg BusinessWeek’s database, he is connected to 123 board members in 13 different organizations across 27 different industries. He was honored with the Pioneer Prize at Mip TV in Cannes in 2006 and as a “Media Visionary of 2011” at the inaugural Media Festival held in Montreux, Switzerland.

Mr. Miller and his family live in New York. But much of his business is in California. He travels almost every week there unless he goes to Europe, Asia or other continents to oversee existing or develop new businesses. When I met him in June during Kung Fu Tai Chi (KFTC) Magazine’s 20th Anniversary Gala in San Jose, California, he just finished a week of travel. But this 55-year executive looked extremely energetic. His eyes were shining with brilliance, gentleness and humility.

Jon’s passion for Chinese Martial Arts, especially Tai Chi is not a secret. He started his Martial Arts journey at 21. First, he studied Wah Lum Preying Mantis from Grandmaster Chan Pui. He was excited to reunite with Grandmaster Chan during the KFTC Magazine Gala. Later he was introduced to internal Chinese Martial Arts like Hsing I, Ba Gua and Tai Chi. Through rock music legend Lou Reed and colleague Scott Richman’s introduction, he met Chen Style Tai Chi lineage holder Grandmaster Ren Guangyi in 2003. He immediately decided to take private lessons from Ren. It wasn’t easy to convert from external martial arts to Tai Chi though. He jokingly said that “it hurts my ego” to become a beginner. In addition to a two-hour weekly lesson, he practices daily by himself even during his frequent business trips. He recalled the fun memory that he was the only “white guy” practicing Tai Chi in a Beijing park by himself.

Grandmaster Ren finds Jon very methodic in his learning approach that Jon only wants to learn a couple of new movements each time. Jon asks many questions about details. To him, quality is more important than quantity. In my interview with him, he mentioned that as he is aging and his goal for learning martial arts has changed. Now he tries to understand the art of Tai Chi and how to better express it. With diligence and thorough understanding, his learning progressed quickly. He has learned Chen Style forms 19, 21, 38, Lao Jia Yi Lu (Old Frame Routine One), Xin Jia Yi Lu (New Frame Routine One), Tai Chi Sword, Tai Chi Broad Sword (Dao), Push Hands and Chin Na (Joint Lock). During the Master Demonstration at KFTC Magazine Gala, Mr. Miller was the only performer who was not a professional martial artist. His performance interpreted Chen Style Tai Chi well. His movements were relaxed, extended, gentle, fluid, yet powerful. He moved slowly and smoothly without any pause but there was Zhong Ding (central equilibrium) in each and every movement.

Miller’s understanding of Tai Chi is not confined to practice. He thinks that some Tai Chi principles can be applied in business and life. In an interview with Sifu Stephan Berwick and published by KFTC Magazine in 2006, Jon was mentioned that Tai Chi principles hold a universal quality. He said that Chen Style Tai Chi and business emphasize precision. He thinks that the Peng energy, which combines both hardness and softness, is essential to Tai Chi, can be utilized in business negotiation. Miller has been described as relatively low-key when it comes to managing mega deals of merger or acqusition however he is extremely effective as a negotiator. You can read Miller’s other profound thoughts of Tai Chi on business by clicking a link here.

Mr. Miller said that scientific research has proven that Tai Chi and meditation have positive impact on people’s brain and body. To him, Chen Style Tai Chi provides the health benefits as well as the martial art functions. It is fun to learn and he also feels energized after practice. Tai Chi also helps him to focus on high-stress jobs he has had. Since he is so busy and he does not have time to do ten things (for fun and health), “I just do Tai Chi,” said Jon. His 90-minute daily routine consists of Standing Post (Zhan Zhuang), Silk Reeling and form practice. As a media mogul, he thinks that media can help raise awareness of Tai Chi and help educate people on the art. He admitted that he has spent much time watching Master Chen Bing’s Youtube clips. When asked whether there is a day that he does not feel like practicing because of time/schedule constraint or other conditions? He said that there was, but he urged others in the same situation, “don’t make a decision and just practice it”, because he always feels great afterwards.

Bette Midler and Tai Chi (http://www.examiner.com/article/bette-midler-and-tai-chi)

By: Violet Li

Oprah Winphrey is the queen of TV talk shows. She can get anyone to speak freely and share his/her deep thoughts and secrets. Last year, she retired from the nation’s highest rated talk show The Oprah Winfrey Show. She is now focusing on her own network, the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) and hosting a similar show called Oprah’s Next Chapter. On Nov. 11, she visited Bette Midler in her Manhattan apartment. Bette discussed her legendary career, what's ahead in her next chapter and her latest movie, Parental Guidance with Billy Crystal. Bette also revealed her biggest regrets, her best decision in life and what she really thinks about "Wind Beneath My Wings," the song made famous by her 1988 movie Beaches. She even allowed the camera crew to film her doing Tai Chi with her personal instructor Grandmaster Ren Guangyi in her apartment's beautiful sun room.

Born in Dec. 1, 1945, Bette Midler is a singer, songwriter, actress, comedian, producer and entrepreneur. She has been nominated for two Academy Awards, and won four Grammy Awards, four Golden Globes, three Emmy Awards, and a special Tony Award. She has sold over 30 million albums with hits like “The Rose,” “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “From a Distance,” and “Hello in There”. In May this year, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg honored Bette with the Doris C. Freedman Award, one of the city’s highest honors for her commitment to the environment and arts.

Contrary to her showbiz persona, Bette Midler admitted that she is actually very shy. She began studying Tai Chi a few years ago. According to her husband, Martin von Haselberg, and Grandmaster Ren, she can perform Chen Style Tai Chi 19 Form really well. However, she did not want to be photographed doing Tai Chi due to her modesty. We were grateful to finally see her practice a few moves, even though it was for just a short period of time.

During the interview with Oprah, Bette stated that her best decision in life is marrying Martin, who was a contemporary performance artist known for the creation of Kipper Kids. Martin is also a professional photographer and artist. His photograph of Ren’s hook hand became a symbol of Tai Chi representing “relaxed yet ready”. Martin is a long-time martial art enthusiast. He had studied Choy Lay Fut before and started his Tai Chi journey in 2002 with Ren Guangyi. Martin takes two private lessons each week and practices two hours each day. In June, he attended the 4th Tiger Claw Kung Fu Magazine Champions tournament held in San Jose, CA and won the title of the moving-step Push Hands as well as a gold medal in a hand form competition.

While I interviewed Marvin during the tournament, he mentioned that he set a task for himself to get his wife “addicted” to the art. It looks like that he has been even more than he imagined in persuading his wife to practice Tai Chi on TV.
