The weights a little too heavy for her - her form is bad, look at how she's arching her back - I could help her with that :) I'd do it for free because I wouldn't want to see her get hurt.

There's nothing wrong with arching your back during bench press. In fact, it is sometimes unavoidable in people with poor flexibility because you're supposed to be squeezing your shoulder blades together.

It also shortens the range of motion, making it easier, but more efficient.

For instance, here is a girl in a powerlifting comp. You can see the floor on the other side of her:

You're supposed to arch your back when you bench press.

You're supposed to keep your ass on the bench, though. A lot of guys do what is called "humping the ceiling" where they arch their back but their ass comes up, too. lol. That is wrong.

The flat back bench pressing is bro science. Even worse is some people keep their back flat and put their feet up on the bench with them. That's an injury waiting to happen AND you're unstable as heck.

Shoulder blades touch, butt touches, back arched, feet on the floor.

The woman in the pic posted has good form.

Here, this is the wrong way to do it:

Actually, you should arch your back when you bench press. The natural motion of your arms is to move in an arch. Therefore, arching the back is correct and best. The arms cannot travel on their correct path if you put your low back flat against the bench. However, your butt should stay on the bench.

Pfft... My response is the only REAL response. Your response doesn't count because it didn't come from a legitimate source and because you don't wear as cool of a hat as me. Also, I know ancient chinese secret Iron Pubic Hair gong fu.

Because they hear nonsense like "big muscles make you slow" or "lift with your tendons" from their instructors.

I also think there is kind of a fear in parts of the TMA world where they don't want other people to get big and strong because they themselves are not big and strong. This also leads to the myth of "you don't need big muscles" because they want to make themselves seem tougher to the average person who is already impressed by big muscles

The truth is, all else being equal, the stronger and/or bigger guy will win.

Drastic differences in skill can allow a smaller and/or weaker guy to defeat a larger opponent. We've all been schooled by a skinny little BJJ guy when we were noobs. Maybe some of us here are that skinny guy who schools noobs. But give them equal skill and the big guy will win.

So the answer to your question is: because of myths and fear.

And I'm one of those reformed "you don't need big muscles/to lift weights" guys.

The other reason is because they actually believe it is true. For years I believed weight lifting was counter productive. Glad I got past that limiting belief.

this trend started as recently as the 1960s. big muskles has always been intergral part of kung fu.

for imperial examinations there had been people that deadlifted 415 pounds, no supplements no diets no juice, mad respect.
