I always find it cool when Gene Ching, the editor of a national magazine, author, martial artist, and dabbling documentary director posts a response to some dumb arse remark that I make.

And it's neat that my kung fu uncle - who's an extremely accomplished master of 7* lurks this fine poo-fling-athon that we call KFM. And I must not do too bad a job representing because my sifu hasn't called and told me to STFU yet and my kung fu uncle would certainly call him if I was talking too much cr@p.

Like many countries, Thailand’s military has conscription by way of a lottery. Draft day is held each April, around the time of the traditional New Year, and all men over 21 – even those who no longer consider themselves to be male – are required to attend the conscription lottery once.

Thailand is widely considered the trans capital of the world, and more gender reassignment surgery takes place there than in any other country. So Thailand’s unusually high number of trans females (kathoey or “ladyboys”) makes this conscription process somewhat unique.

When their name is called during the conscription lottery, each individual must walk up and draw a card from the ballot box. Those who pull a black card can go home; draw a red card, however, and you will undergo medical checks before potentially being drafted for two years’ service.

In practice, kathoey ladyboys are almost always exempted from military service – but they are still required to attend the lottery. Thai law forbids people changing their gender on national identification documents, so all trans women remain officially recognised as male.

I would vote Gene but I don't know that he is a member like the rest of us. Pending that decision I'll probably cast my vote toward lkfmdc based strictly on what he does with his kungfu, and how his contribution to applicable skills would be viewed by our kungfu forefathers.

In today's world of nerdy white guys insisting everything remain stagnant, I feel his approach (and he's not alone) is in alignment with the true spirit of martial effectiveness. Being able to adapt and overcome in your environment and to surpass yourself of yesterday with yourself of today, is among the most vital aspects of any true fighter. Add to.the fact he has been able to identify his strengths and weaknesses, then proceed to excellence with this in mind is a testament to his dedication to his lineage.

A great balance between the historic east and modern America is what stands out to me the most.
