Neither Sleemans nor Sagres is a light beer dude.
For Sleemans Ilike their cream ale:

Yesterday, some friends and I made it out to Westbrook Brewery (Mt. Pleasant, SC) for the barrel aged Mexican Cake reveal. If you're not familiar, its an imperial stout brewed with cocoa nibbs, vanilla beans, cinnamon sticks and habanero peppers. These special release were wine barrel aged, apple brandy barrel aged and bourbon barrel aged.

Before the reveal, we hit up House of Brews. Got my hands on a Westbrook Poppin' Pils (3 out of 5), COAST Brewing's Belafonte (3.5), and Green Flash Hop Odyssey Imperial Red Rye IPA (4 of 5).

At Westbrook, had the Mexican Coffee Cake (core recipe with coffee addition) which was good (4 of 5). Evil Twin's Imperial Biscotti Break DeCicco Version (with chili peppers and hazelnut). This was great, I rate it 4.5 of 5. Westbrook's Brett & No Mices was great as well. Finished off with Cap'n Skoon's Wench (3.5), Mini-Growler with Cardamom (not good) and Vanilla Weisse Baby (also not pleasant at all).

Followed that up with a small sampler at Holy City Brewing. Had their barrel aged Bowen's Island oyster stout with was great. Yes, oysters make a good beer. So do Rocky Mountain oysters as well, but that's a different story. Their Fishbowl 2 IPA was pretty good, not wowing, but good. They had 2 versions of their Slanted Porch pale; 1 with centennial and citra hop and 1 with warrior and amarillo hops. I preferred the 2nd version with warrior and amarillo. Both were good and low alcohol as well. Closed out there with a plate of spicy chicken adobo and rice and washed it down with a Washout Wheat.

Topped the trip off with a bottle share were we popped one of the 3 Mexican Cake varieties (red wine barrel aged). This was excellent. It tasted like black forest cake. Got to try a Deschutes Jubel 2010 which was amazing (4.5 of 5). The highlight of the trip though was the 2011 Saint Lamvinus; straight 5. Such a perfect Belgian lambic.

You're right, Lucas. The NorthWest is full of em!
We have so many small craft breweries here that the competition has brought the price down so much(I assume that's why, anyways). You can get a nice case of quality craft for the same price as a case of Lucky's or PBR!!!

I'm no connoisseur, but I'll take a good craft beer over a lucky any day!

Founders is good. But those polls are always lame. This past year Asheville, NC won. The people in the real beer cities never bother to vote. San Diego and Portland, everywhere else is fighting for 3rd place.

Tonight a buddy of mine cracked open a tradebox he got. Hill Farmstead's Susan IPA and Abner Double IPA. Man, there's not much out there that can beat those beers. Except until he opened a Lawson's Double Sunshine. One of the best, if not the best, double IPA's I've ever had.

Not much of a beer guy as I have no idea what you guys mean by IPA. Tried Innis & Gunn last week and didn't mind it. It's got an oak/honey hint to it. Totally different than what i'm used to. Considering i'm used to the typical Coors/Canadian/Bud type bers, I really need to get out more.

SoCo KungFu
07-25-2013, 08:15 AM
A lot of craft brews are shifting to cans. Not the crappy paper thin ones that the **** beer companies use. They're thicker and have an internal lining that protects the contents from the metal can. Also, cans give the best protection against light. Plus they stack better, take up less space and so reduce shipping costs and fuel use (more per truck). And are easy to recycle.

IPA is India Pale Ale. I don't know how things are in Canada. In the states its evolved to be super hoppy and bitter, which I actually like since it contrasts the super spicy food I usually eat. If it tastes like a pine tree drop kicked you in the face, I'm all about it. British style tends to be more malty/sweet.
